So, you're [music] thinking about
customizing your racket. The question
is, should you do it? In today's video,
we're going to hear from the world's
most famous racket customizer, Diet
Cali. Diet works with a lot of the
current world's best tennis players to
fine-tune their rackets to suit their
needs. I was fortunate enough to meet DA
in Paris at a Technifiber event where he
presented to me and a bunch of other
racket reviewers explaining the
importance of getting swing weight
right. As in the modern game of tennis,
trends are changing massively. And in
this video, you're going to hear all
about it along with whether you should
be getting your racket customized or
not. Let's dive in.
>> Hi everybody. Uh my name is Dus Khali.
My I look a little bit tired because we
I just came back last night from the
baby script. So Sunday night I was not
in the best uh state, but I'm okay. Uh I
brought Nicolola. Uh we expanded the
company five six years ago. um DC
customizing and Nikolola he he I know
him from when he was 15 years old and
then he was totally out of tennis. He's
a good player. He came to me and said I
want to come back in tennis and we
started working together again and now
he's fully in the company. So uh it's
good to have two people because it's
becoming a little bit too much. The
brand has grown technially so it's uh
yeah too much is too much. [music] I
used to play, let's say, two, three
future tournaments, like $15,000 dollars
in the past when I was younger. I didn't
win much, but okay. And uh but I still
play. So if I go on court with somebody,
it's good. Many people don't know, but
where do I get the scientific part of my
job? Because I think many people
customize, but you really need to know
also the science.
So one of my teachers but he just died
recently was his name is Walter Vandom
Brown but you guys don't know he was an
engineer physical engineer and he was
teaching the federation Belgium about
material so everybody who wants to
become a teacher in the Belgian
federation they need a diploma material
I think it's one of the only countries
who does that so he was basically a
scientist and he learned me basically
all the theoretical part of my job so
this is how I got into yeah customizing
so uh yeah that's about it so now we are
doing fulltime that's it customizing the
first thing I want to do tennis has
changed a lot yeah so I'm going to need
three volunteers
so what we're going to do is you can
close your eyes and I just want the
static weight of the record you can hold
it 7 8 seconds okay and you just tell me
the static weight be careful because
he's going to swing that >> [laughter]
>> not hit the table as well.
It's not that heavy. Doesn't have strings.
strings.
>> That's a good remark. [laughter]
>> How did you see that? >> No.
>> No.
>> I mean, is this 300?
>> 300. Okay. Can you put a ticket? 300. [laughter]
>> That's not even
>> Do I have to close my eyes? >> Yeah.
time.
>> No strings. Three times.
>> Yeah. Without
>> you can swing or you can swing.
>> 325. >> Okay.
>> Oh, you were so close.
>> What is it? >> 331.
>> 331.
>> Yeah. So this is the first player of the
old generation who was playing, let's
say, like we play now. Okay. How do we
play now? Everybody knows a little bit.
It's a little bit lighter, but he played
still heavy because the old generation
played heavy. But it was the first guy
to play with an easier swing weight than
before. It was tennis became fast. It
was Fernando Vandasu, one of the first
clients, big clients I had. So he was,
let's say, one of the pioneers. He
didn't know it was. Now, in case you
missed it, that was Fernando Vadesco's
racket, weighing in at 330 g as a static
unstrung [music] weight, which may seem
heavy to you, but he was one of the
first players to play with a racket with
a swing weight lower than it static
weight. And since then, trends have gone
in that direction. Players are playing
with much lighter swing weights. As the
game has become that much faster,
players need to wield their racket
through the air much quicker. The
challenge, however, when it comes to
specking up rackets correctly for these
lighter swing weights is stability. As
if you imagine a tennis ball weighing 55
g traveling at 100 mph, that's a lot of
force going into your racket. And if the
swing weight is too low, you're going to
lose a bit of stability. And so, the
real key is finding the correct balance
for you and your game style. Diet now
explains how swing weight actually works.
works.
>> And the ball is going faster. But today
when you customize a racket you don't
look only at the player anymore. 25
years ago you could see okay this player
hits swings like this we're going to
make the racket quite heavy and the ball
is going. Now there is no time. So
basically you have to look at time issue
and customization issue. Okay. The
biggest problem also in tennis is I need
two people. Where is Victor? Come here.
And you same. Yeah.
Yeah.
I'm going to show you like easy. The
biggest problem in tennis is this today.
Hey, you ready?
Hey, you ready?
Okay. So, today the people want to play
lighter because they need to react
faster. Tenn is going too fast. But if
you don't swing, it's difficult because
the ball, let's say, is taking over the
racket. Yeah. So today customization is
more difficult I think than in the older
times. So what can we say is that yeah
you can go back okay
>> that the [laughter]
we have all the numbers basically of
many players and I think every stringing
service uh Unix techniber babalot they
measure the rackets from all players
there's no secret I mean they're going
to take the rackets and they measure
them I think so what we see is that the
players play 20% lighter than let's say
the time of feather and the swing weight
has go down 22%. Yeah, it's very it's a
lot. Yeah, some of them not. Some of
them Yes. But basically, if you take the
average of all players, the weight and
look at for example, they play lighter
and lighter and lighter. Yeah. The
problem is if you become it's becomes
too light, you get this. Okay. You need
to find solutions. Yeah. Maybe a good
thing to explain. I think some of you
because I've seen also your videos,
you're quite smart.
>> No, but it's true. Uh but some of them
they not know but I want to show you
something special. What really is swing
weight? How can you show it to the
people? Because the most difficult thing
to show to the people is weight. They
know balance they know. I think you'll
know. But what is swing weight? Okay. So
So imagine
we have 330
and I stick
>> I stick
8 g in the middle. Okay. What is my weight?
weight? >> 30
>> 30 >> 338
>> 338
>> 338 is my weight. Okay. My balance I can
Voila. It's still the same like it was.
Okay, it's 287.
Okay, now [music] this one is really
easy. Yeah, really light. Okay,
maybe one question. If you are wrong in
the answer, don't [music] worry. It's
good that you learn.
Does it exist the same balance, the same
weight, but a different swing weight? Is
it possible or not? >> Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. Most of them. Yeah. It's good.
Some of them maybe hesitate, but look,
Did I change my weight? >> No.
>> No.
>> Nope. Did I change my balance? >> No.
>> No.
>> Some of them are looking I'll show you.
Yeah. Here we have a manual balance. You
can work the balance with two scales.
Okay. But for traveling, I prefer a
manual balance. We travel a lot and if
you calibrate everything, for me this is
more easy to work with. So still 30.6
[clears throat]
So this one is 290. Gun up. Same weight,
same balance, different swing weight.
What we can say in general is that this
racket, yes, is more for a little bit
shorter swings because the weight is
further away. Yeah. The swing weight is
higher. Let's say for example, type like
Murray, it's easy. Yeah. And this is
more the modern version of the racket.
If you play lighter and lighter, Yeah.
the swing weights are going down. Yes.
And also the weight.
Okay, if you go customizing for the
player, you can also play with the
balance because the biggest problem
today is and everybody knows is long for
and then short back ends. So, it's not
so easy. Yeah. To customize because the
long fore end needs an easy swinging
racket, but the back end they need mass.
And this is where we try to do our best. >> Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> To test with the player and see how far
we can go. So, basically, we do
[clears throat] the fore end. It's
normal. the fore end has to go first and
then sometimes the back end becomes too
short and then you have a problem and
then it's up to us to find a solution. >> Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> So basically this is how we uh how we work.
work. >> Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> Higher swing weights are great for
players with shorter swings. Picture a
player like Andy Murray with his very
compact swing on both his forehand and
his backhand. The extra mass in the
racket can add to the force that he puts
back into the tennis ball. But as you
can imagine, a heavier swing weight is
not so good for players that want to
swing really fast through the air. This
is where lower swing weights can help
for those longer, faster swings. It's
much easier to wield the racket around.
And so rather than power coming from the
mass of the racket, it's coming from the
speed of the swing, which is what we're
seeing a lot more in today's
professional game. But as you saw and
heard, the real challenge is that most
players, including yourself, have very
differentized swings when we compare our
forehand to our backhand. Most players
have a much bigger swing size on their
forehand than they do on their backhand
side. And so the key is figuring out how
you want to play. If you feel as though
your forehand is your biggest weapon, it
might be worth having a slightly lower
swing weight, allowing you to swing fast
on that side. But the compromise comes
on your backhand side with your shorter
swing. If you don't have as much mass,
you're not going to get as much power on
that side. On the flip side, if your
game isn't quite as explosive, if you're
more of an absorber, then maybe a
heavier swing weight will suit you as
having those more compact swings can
allow you to control the ball, redirect
it with a lot of stability. To finish
with, diet gave us a little test. He
gave us two customized Technifiber
firefs. [music]
One had a slightly higher swing weight
than the other. We had a few seconds to
hold the racket and swing it around, and
then we had to decide which one had the
higher swing weight. I was one of the
first to choose along with Greca from
Gladiators Tennis and we were both
pretty confident that we'd got it right
until Beckett from Tencom chose the
other racket and then there were some
serious doubts.
>> So one racket
they have the same I can say it. Yeah,
maybe it's better that I say it and then
you can feel it. One racket they are
both 300 g. Okay, they are both 32.9 balance.
balance.
Okay. But they have a different swing weight.
weight.
It's not easy. Even me, it's tough.
Yeah. So, it's good that you you feel
the racket. Maybe it's good that they do
it all. Or you have time to do it all.
Yeah. Yeah. In two groups. Yeah. Yeah.
>> Okay. We split in two groups. We're
going to do it with real rackets. And
he's going to If you don't feel it, you
go to the how do you call it? The second
[laughter] group.
If you come with him, I give you a free
beer. [laughter]
We are here to learn. Okay. Because when
we do the test, yes, it's not always
easy. I'm doubting. Okay. Here we made
the big difference.
>> That's the thing. I didn't doubt. I didn't
didn't
>> like it was so it was instant.
>> I didn't. Yeah. Because if you do it
five times, I think the groups will be
better divided. But you were here about
learning. So it's it's okay. But this group
group
>> was right.
>> Okay. Okay.
But the most interesting part of
Dieter's presentation was actually when
he was asked, "At what point in your
tennis journey should you be looking to
get your rackets customized?" Sadly, I
didn't record this part, but I remember
it word for word. He said that it really
depends on a number of things. However,
if he were to give a very broad answer,
it [music] would be as soon as you start
earning money from competing, that's the
time where you should start taking your
racket customization seriously, which
for 99.9%
of the tennis playing world, we're a
long way from that. However, there are
some basic things that you can do to
customize your racket to get the most
out of it. Number one is you can get
your rackets matched. Now, you might
know that most racket manufacturers come
with a range of acceptability when it
comes to their specs. As if you buy
three identical rackets, they could come
with slightly different weights and
slightly different swing weights. And
so, if you are a player that's taking
your tennis seriously and you've got
multiple of the same racket, it may be
worth getting them matched up. But one
thing to bear in mind is you can only
have them matched up to the highest
weighted racket that you have. It's very
difficult to take weight off of a
racket. But the reason why DA said that
customization isn't necessary for every
player is that rackets nowadays are
designed for the consumer. They're ready
to be picked up off a shelf and played
with. And honestly, even for my tennis,
I consider myself to be a decent tennis
player competing for my county and my
nation in the over 35s category. I
actually don't ever customize my rackets
unless I have two of the same racket
that are very different, then I have
them matched up. But honestly, rackets
today are incredible. And so, don't get
too caught up on the specs. [music] But
what I would say is experiment with your
strings and your tensions as it's not
your frame that makes contact with the
ball. It's your strings for the most
part. Now, I did make another video on
racket customization with my friend Paul
Skip, the headstringer at Wimbledon. And
so if you want to dive deeper into
racket customization, I put the video
above here. A big thanks to Technifiber
for introducing me to DA. It was an
amazing presentation and I'd love to get
him back on the channel at some point
soon. And a big thank you to you for
staying all the way through to the end
of the video. I look forward to seeing
