oh [Music]
happy New Year everyone it is 2023 year
of the rabbit and I am back in my
beloved hometown of Nanjing and I'm
going to take you guys with me over
these couple of days as we experience
Chinese New Year in rural China even
though I live and work in Hangzhou I'm
spending Chinese New Year on a little
island in the Yangtze River with aunt
and uncle Zhao who you guys may have
seen in some of my previous videos I met
them in 2020 during a bike trip while I
was living in Nanjing getting my
master's degree and now they're like my
family here in China so let's celebrate
[Music]
great nephew and my main companion for
the next two days so get used to seeing
every year I noticed the fixation on red
things around Chinese New Year time but
I never questioned why and finally we
have the answer we also finally have the
answer to why this noise has been going
on Non-Stop in the background all day long
long [Music]
[Music] foreign
foreign
we've been listening to this noise all
afternoon and now it is time to make our
contribution There She Goes [Music]
[Music] [Applause]
foreign [Music]
still have about an hour until the New
Year's Eve dinner so we're gonna go pick
some strawberries [Music]
[Music] foreign
foreign [Music]
[Music]
the sound of fireworks just does not
stop they just go on and on and on
somebody is setting off fireworks at
every moment
all of these little shops are closed the
only thing that's open is the guy who's
selling fireworks because this is
definitely the night to rake it in if
you're selling those friends [Music]
[Music] laughs
laughs [Music]
[Music]
every time I come here I check on the
toilet flower pot and unfortunately it's
winter so she's looking a little bit dry
and crispy but that's fine I'll be back
you may be wondering why we've barely
seen our doll this entire video it's
because she's been busy in the kitchen
oh
so now that we've set up the fireworks
it is officially time for dinner it's
[Music]
it's a fish [Music]
so why does the fish get the honored
seat at the center of the table it
represents which means may we have
abundance year after year and the last
character you sounds the same as the
word for fish
as with every meal I have here at bagua
Island today I got to try something new
this thing is a similar texture and
flavor to a meatball but it's actually
percent
during the daytime the purpose of
setting off fireworks and firecrackers
is to make as much noise as possible but
at night it's not just about the noise
fireworks in China really are something else
else
every single year ever since I started
learning Chinese I've been watching the
Chinese New Year evening show it started
when I was in college and my Chinese
classmates and I would have dumplings on
Chinese New Year Eve and put this show
on in the background and it's been my
annual tradition ever since can't miss
it ironically this year I'm having the
most authentic Chinese New Year in rural
China but nobody wants to watch the
except me I'm just literally sitting in
here watching it alone because I'm a
very nostalgic type of person and
because this has been my tradition since
2016 so I am going to keep it going no
I'll do it um
[Music]
you may have noticed the pile of boxes
on the floor here these are Chinese New
Year gifts given to the hosts by the
visitors I brought two types of nuts
grown in Mountain Villages around honcho
most of the gifts are food and unlike
Christmas gifts they come cute little
boxes so you don't have to bother with
wrapping them which is nice but
tragically the downside is there's no
surprise for the gift receiver they
there probably would be a lot more
fireworks going off than this but it's
raining right now which kind of like
ruins the vibe of standing out in the
yard and setting off fireworks but the
[Music]
thank you [Music]
on our way to Uncle Joe's house for the
second Chinese New Year meal and the
whole way there we get to hear that little
little
pop sound he is obsessed with these
things these little guys are another way
to make as much noise as possible during
Chinese New Year minus the fire and smoke
smoke [Music]
[Music] um
Aunt y'all's sister got dami a massive
stockpile of these baby firecrackers and
he has been bringing little boxes of
here we can see the scraps from last
night's Shenanigans look at all the
the real adults are playing cards and
I'm hanging out with got me in this bomb shelter
[Music]
as lovely as this bomb shelter is we
can't spend our whole visit at Uncle
Joe's in here we have to check out his
constantly growing collection of
miscellaneous things it's a tradition
that thing that Uncle Joe was working on
a few months ago is finally complete [Music]
finally someone is watching the Chinese
New Year evening show with me there's a
rerun playing right now and dami and I
are watching it in Uncle Joe's living room
room [Music]
[Music] foreign
so we've seen the New Year's Eve Feast
we've seen firecrackers and fireworks
and this terrifying Contraption we've
seen tons of red decorations and
lanterns and even this look-alike plant
the star of Aunt Giles collection we've
seen the Chinese New Year evening show
twice there are New Year's gift boxes
and homemade dried pork and a lion dance
sort of anyway almost all the aspects of
Chinese New Year are here except one
thing why hasn't Aunt Giles family left
to see the Lantern Festival with my friends
hope you guys enjoyed this little glance
into Chinese New Year in rural than Jing
some traditions are a bit different
because of this place's unique historic
background but the core elements are the
same nevertheless spending time with
family eating lots of food putting out
cute decorations and watching explosions
lots of explosions that's all for today
everyone happy year of the rabbit and I
thank you [Music]
