0:32 weby we open the word to aans
0:34 3 and we're going to be considering
0:37 verses 19- [Music]
0:38 [Music]
0:42 29 Paul has proved that
0:45 salvation is by grace and not by the
0:47 keeping of the law he's proved it in two
0:50 ways first of all personally from his
0:54 own life chapters 1 and two and then
0:56 doctrinally from the Old Testament
1:01 scriptures 3: 1-18
1:04 and having proved that salvation is by
1:06 grace and not by the keeping of the law
1:09 he has raised an important
1:11 question and he anticipates that
1:14 question in verse
1:19 19 wherefore then serveth the law if the
1:23 law cannot save us then why was the law
1:27 given if the law cannot sanctify
1:30 us why should we bother to honor the law
1:34 Jesus said I have not come to destroy
1:37 the law but to fulfill it and Paul
1:40 himself writes in Romans CH
1:45 7 that the law is Holy and
1:48 just and
1:51 good now Paul if the law is good what is
1:53 it good for this is a logical
1:55 question because when it comes to this
2:00 matter of the law people go to extremes
2:02 if there's one thing you want to avoid
2:05 in this matter of the law it's an
2:08 extreme in fact let me put it this way
2:10 your attitude toward the
2:14 law helps to determine the quality of
2:16 your spiritual
2:18 life if you and I have the wrong
2:20 attitude toward the law we're going to
2:22 have the wrong kind of a spiritual life
2:24 if we have the right attitude toward the
2:26 law we're going to have the right kind
2:29 of spiritual life in fact let me go just
2:31 one step further
2:34 our attitude toward the law
2:37 determines our attitude toward Authority in
2:43 general young people who have the wrong
2:45 attitude toward God's law will have the
2:47 wrong attitude toward the authority of their
2:48 their parents
2:50 parents
2:54 policemen teachers
2:56 Deans employees who have the wrong
2:58 attitude toward the law will have the
3:03 wrong attitude toward employers foremen
3:05 superintendent and this my friends is
3:08 one of our big problems
3:13 today now in Galatians 3:19 through 29
3:15 Paul explains that there are three
3:18 possible attitudes you can have toward
3:20 the law two of them are
3:23 wrong only one of them is right now what
3:26 are these three attitudes the legalist
3:31 says the law is my
3:34 Master Paul says that's
3:40 wrong the anarchist says the law is my
3:45 enemy verse 21 is the law then against
3:48 the promises of God and the anarchist
3:52 the antinomian anti against Nomas the
3:55 law the one who's against the law says
3:58 yes the law is against the promises of God
4:00 God
4:02 and so while the legalist is saying the
4:05 law is my master the anarchist is saying
4:08 the law is my
4:10 enemy and that's
4:13 wrong but Along Comes the mature
4:16 Christian notice I said the mature
4:19 mature
4:20 Christian he
4:23 says the law is not my
4:26 master the law is not my
4:30 enemy the law is my servant
4:33 wherefore then
4:37 serveth the law let's consider now these
4:39 three attitudes toward the law you
4:40 examine your own heart and find out
4:44 which one expresses your feeling first
4:46 the legalist who says the law is my
4:50 master now for Israel this was
4:54 true under the dispensation of the
4:59 law the law was their Master look at it
5:02 when wherefore then serveth the law it
5:05 was added because of
5:08 transgressions until the seed should
5:12 come to whom the promise was made and
5:15 the law was ordained by angels in the
5:16 hand of a
5:19 mediator now a mediator is not a
5:22 mediator of one obviously a mediator
5:25 stands between two but God is
5:28 one is the law then against the promises
5:31 of God God forb did for if there had
5:33 been a law given which could have given
5:36 life verily righteousness should have
5:40 been by the law but the scriptures hath
5:42 concluded and that Greek word concluded
5:46 means confined in
5:49 jail but the scripture hath concluded
5:53 all under sin that the Promise by faith
5:55 of Jesus Christ might be given to them
5:59 that believe but before this Faith came
6:03 this faith in Jesus Christ we Jews were
6:04 kept under the
6:09 law shut up unto the faith which should
6:10 afterward be
6:13 revealed wherefore the law was our school
6:14 school
6:17 Master our tutor our Guardian to bring
6:19 us unto Christ that we might be
6:22 justified by faith but after faith is
6:25 come we are no longer under a school
6:30 Master for ye are all the sons of God
6:34 by faith in Christ Jesus for as many as
6:37 you as have been baptized into Christ
6:39 and there he's talking not about water
6:41 baptism water never put anybody into
6:44 Christ he's talking about the work of
6:47 the Holy Spirit as many of you as have
6:50 been baptized into Christ have put on
6:53 Christ there is neither Jew nor Greek
6:55 there is neither Bond nor free there is
6:57 neither male nor female for you are all
7:00 one in Christ Jesus
7:03 and if ye be Christ then are ye
7:07 Abraham's seed and HS according to the
7:10 promise you see when Israel was under
7:13 the law the law performed three
7:16 functions number one it was a mirror to
7:19 reveal sin verse
7:22 19 it was added because of
7:25 transgressions now sin existed before
7:28 the law obviously but sin is not transgression
7:30 transgression
7:33 until a law is
7:37 given a little child for example sins
7:39 doesn't realize it sins then it reaches
7:42 an age of accountability and
7:43 understanding where it knows that when
7:46 mother draws the line that's as far as
7:49 you can go and going over that line is
7:52 transgression and so the law was given
7:55 as a mirror to reveal
7:59 sin secondly the law was given as a jail
8:01 were to restrain
8:04 restrain
8:07 sin Paul is saying that the law was like
8:11 a Jailer who kept confining everybody
8:19 Faith thirdly he tells us the law was a
8:22 tutor a guardian this word Schoolmaster
8:25 does not refer to one of our school
8:28 teachers it's the picture in the Greek
8:32 world of a slave who guarded a minor
8:36 child from home to school and back now
8:38 the slave didn't make the child grow up
8:40 the child grew up in spite of the slave
8:43 the slave's job was to protect the child
8:44 so it might grow
8:46 up to keep the child from getting into
8:49 danger and mischief to discipline the
8:51 child to make sure the child came from
8:55 home to school and back home again a
8:58 guardian and the law did this the law
9:00 took the nation of of Israel and
9:02 protected the nation and watched over
9:05 the nation and disciplined the nation
9:08 until it came to the maturity of times
9:12 and Jesus came and fulfilled the law so
9:15 to the Old Testament Jew the law was a
9:20 master a mirror to reveal sin a Jailer to
9:21 to
9:27 confine and a guardian to conduct and
9:29 protect but you see that's all the law
9:33 could do if you make the law your master
9:37 the law can reveal sin but the law can never
9:38 never remove
9:40 remove
9:43 sin I'm sure that today many of you at
9:47 some point looked into the
9:50 mirror some of us looked into the mirror
9:52 to see if our faces were
9:55 dirty those of you who are so blessed
10:06 mirror you look into the mirror and the
10:08 mirror says your face is dirty but you
10:11 don't wash your face in the
10:14 mirror the law says to you your face is
10:16 dirty you've done this you've done that
10:19 you've done something else the law can
10:22 reveal but the law cannot remove and the
10:25 law can restrain but the law can't
10:29 redeem the law can be a Jailer to
10:33 confine us but it cannot change
10:37 us why we have more laws in America
10:39 today than we've ever had and we have
10:41 more lawlessness than we've ever
10:44 had did anybody ever have the idea that
10:47 the passing of a law changed anything
10:49 doesn't change anything we have laws
10:52 against reckless driving
10:56 oh we have laws against illegal parking
10:59 what difference does it make
11:01 the law doesn't change anything the law can
11:02 can
11:06 confine the law can restrain but the law cannot
11:07 cannot
11:10 change that's the frustration of
11:14 legalism here is this high standard and
11:16 the person says I'm going to reach that
11:19 standard and he can't do
11:22 it the law can
11:25 protect but the law cannot
11:28 perfect the law can protect the child as
11:30 it goes from home home to school and
11:33 back but the law doesn't make that child
11:36 grow up the law simply protects the
11:38 child until the child can grow up he
11:40 matures from
11:42 within Paul's going to talk more about
11:47 that in chapter 4 on how the Law relates
11:49 to spiritual
11:51 maturity and so the legalist says the
11:54 law is my master and I say it's too bad
11:58 the law can reveal sin but not remove it
12:02 the law can restrain but not redeem the
12:07 law can protect but not perfect the law
12:12 can change you but not change
12:15 you and furthermore Mr legalist I will
12:17 say to you that the law is not our Master
12:19 Master
12:22 today when you read Romans and Galatians and
12:23 and
12:26 Hebrews you discover that the Christian
12:29 is dead to the law the the Christian is
12:33 not under law he is under grace I read
12:37 here in verse 19 of Galatians 3 that the
12:39 law was not part of the original
12:41 equipment law was
12:46 added Israel began with Grace on Eagle
12:49 wings God picked them up and delivered
12:52 them from Egypt they started off with
12:56 Grace not with law the law was added why
12:59 to let Israel know what was wrong to war
13:02 warn them to protect them to restrain
13:11 come the law was given at the hands of a
13:14 mediator but uh Grace is not given
13:16 through a mediator apparently God gave
13:19 the law to the angels and the angel gave
13:21 the law to Moses and Moses gave the law
13:23 to Israel and so Israel was twice
13:26 removed from God this is not true in the
13:28 gospel the gospel came to us in the
13:32 person of of God's son Jesus Christ and
13:34 therefore the person who goes by law and
13:37 says law is my master is removing
13:40 himself from God the person who goes by
13:43 promise is drawing himself closer to
13:46 God the law was
13:49 temporary wherefore then serveth the law
13:53 it was added because of transgressions
13:56 until until all the way through this
13:58 passage he says now God did this
14:00 temporarily until until the law was
14:08 permanent and verse 21 he comes out very
14:11 boldly and says the law cannot give
14:13 life of course all the law can do is give
14:15 give
14:18 death the law says this do and thou
14:21 shalt live and we say I can't do it and
14:24 then the law says the wages of sin is
14:28 death now if the law cannot give life
14:31 then the law cannot sustain
14:35 life if I could not receive Life by the
14:39 law then I cannot develop Life by the
14:41 law and so Mr
14:43 legalist you say to me the law is my
14:47 master and I say I feel sorry for you
14:50 because that's not why the law was
14:53 given then Along Comes the anarchist we
14:55 have a number of these
14:58 today they come along in verse 21 and
15:00 they say is the law then against the
15:03 promises of God this makes me think of
15:06 Book of Romans back in the Book of
15:08 Romans Paul raises the same question
15:10 well we're not under law we're under
15:13 grace therefore let just sin ever heard
15:16 that you watch out for that there is a
15:19 brand of
15:22 antinomianism anti
15:25 law in our Evangelical churches today
15:27 that says especially to young people hey
15:29 don't let any everybody talk to you
15:33 about rules and regulations you're free
15:35 you live under grace and grace means you
15:37 can do what you want to
15:40 do and if you should do wrong God will
15:43 forgive you ever heard that that's not
15:46 scriptural you see the legalist does
15:47 away with
15:51 grace and the anarchist the antinomian
15:53 does away with
15:57 law and God never wants us to do that
15:59 the the antinomian the one who says live
16:01 any way you please there you're under
16:03 grace you're free the antinomian has
16:05 plagued the church from the very
16:07 beginning this was one of Paul's
16:10 problems in Corinth in Corinth a group
16:12 of people got saved they say hey we're
16:14 under grace we'll live any way we
16:17 please he had to write to them and say
16:20 oh no Liberty does not mean you live the
16:23 way you please Liberty means we live to
16:26 please God the worst bondage in the
16:29 world is living to please yourself
16:31 I can't think of a more terrible bondage
16:34 in the world a more
16:37 egotistical experience in all the world
16:38 then getting up in the morning and say
16:41 I'm going to live today to please myself
16:44 and I'm going to do it my
16:46 way that's not Freedom that's the worst
16:48 kind of bondage that's where the
16:53 prodigal son got his start father give
16:56 me it was not until later on when he
17:00 said Father Make Me
17:02 that things begin to
17:05 change Freedom doesn't mean Give Me
17:07 Freedom means
17:12 Make Me Over in the little book of Jude
17:14 right before the Book of
17:17 Revelation Jude has a bit of a warning
17:20 for us on this whole
17:23 thing Jude was going to sit down and
17:25 write a letter a book about salvation
17:29 verse three beloved when I gave all all
17:31 diligence to write unto you of the common
17:33 common
17:35 salvation it was needful for me to write
17:38 unto you and exort you that ye should
17:41 earnestly contend for the faith which
17:44 was once delivered unto the Saints for
17:47 there are certain men crept in now Peter
17:50 says the same thing these men who crept
18:00 creeps certain men crept in
18:04 unawares who were before of old ordained
18:07 to this condemnation ungodly men turning
18:11 the grace of our Lord into
18:14 lasciviousness taking the grace of God
18:16 and saying oh you live under grace
18:19 therefore you can satisfy all the
18:21 appetites of your
18:24 life they never seem to have heard of
18:26 what Paul wrote to
18:30 Titus one of the great p messages Titus
18:35 2:1 for the grace of God that bringeth
18:37 salvation hath appeared to all men
18:42 teaching us Grace doesn't just save us
18:47 Grace teaches us Grace disciplines
18:50 us disciplining us teaching us that denying
18:52 denying
18:55 ungodliness and worldly lust we should
18:59 live soberly righteously and God ly in
19:00 this present
19:04 age now the um the antinomian the
19:06 anarchist comes to me and says just a
19:09 minute is there not in the Bible a
19:16 yes several times in the word of God you
19:17 find these
19:21 contrasts Hebrews CH 12 we have not come
19:24 to a mountain burning with fire we
19:26 haven't come to a fearful place where
19:30 the voice of God made everyone Shake no
19:32 we have come to Mount Zion to the
19:35 Heavenly Jerusalem there's a contrast
19:37 there between
19:39 fear and
19:43 love between God shaking and God
19:46 graciously reaching out yes there's a
19:49 contrast 2 Corinthians chapter 3 there's
19:53 a contrast the whole chapter the Old
19:55 Testament law was written on
19:58 Stones the New Covenant is written in
20:02 our hearts the old Covenant written by
20:05 the Finger of God the New Covenant
20:07 written by the spirit of God in our
20:11 hearts the old Covenant Glory was fading
20:14 away the New Covenant Glory gets
20:17 brighter and brighter the old Covenant
20:19 Glory meant
20:22 condemnation the New Covenant Glory
20:25 means salvation the old Covenant the
20:28 ministry of death the New Covenant the
20:31 ministry of Life the old Covenant
20:34 bondage but says Chapter 3 of 2
20:37 Corinthians under the New Covenant where
20:39 the spirit of the Lord is there is
20:43 Liberty there's
20:45 contrast but let me underscore this
20:49 tonight even though there is contrast in
20:53 the Bible between law and Grace
21:04 contrast means
21:06 cooperation there's contrast between
21:08 husband and
21:11 wife this does not mean
21:15 competition it means cooperation law
21:19 prepared the way for Grace Grace is seen
21:23 in law and law is fulfilled in
21:26 Grace and there are some of these Ultra
21:29 dispensational teachers
21:32 who give us the impression that now that
21:34 we're under grace you can forget about
21:38 law and it almost leads to
21:41 antinomianism may I remind you that both
21:44 law and Grace came from God they can't
21:47 compete with each other that both law
21:50 and Grace glorify
21:53 God God was glorified in the giving of the
21:54 the
21:58 law God is glorified in the grace of calvary
21:59 calvary
22:02 both law and Grace Center in Jesus
22:05 Christ he was made under the law he said
22:07 I've not come to destroy the law I've
22:10 come to fulfill it he lived under the
22:13 law he didn't keep the Traditions he
22:19 law and the Lord Jesus Christ makes it
22:21 very clear that we as his
22:25 followers have a standard to
22:29 follow I've been interested to know note
22:32 that nine of the Ten Commandments are
22:34 repeated in the New Testament letters for
22:36 for
22:38 Christians the one that is not repeated
22:40 is remember the Sabbath day to keep it
22:44 holy you don't find that but he says be
22:46 ye holy for I am
22:50 Holy God's standard of righteousness
22:53 still stands it's still wrong to
22:57 lie anyone who holds on to Grace as an
23:00 excuse for lying doesn't understand
23:02 either law or
23:05 Grace it's still wrong to steal it's
23:07 still wrong to commit adultery still
23:09 wrong to bear false witness it's still
23:12 wrong to dishonor your
23:21 it the antinomian says the law is my
23:25 enemy and my Bible says the moral law of
23:33 now actually Among Us Christians the
23:37 moral law goes deeper you know
23:40 this Jesus said it has been said Thou
23:42 shalt not kill but I say don't get angry
23:45 with each other because anger is
23:47 murder it's been said You shall not
23:49 commit adultery I'm not going to change
23:51 that I'm going to go deeper don't lust
23:54 in your heart it's been said you should
23:56 not bear false witness I'm going to go a
23:58 little deeper than that be careful with
24:00 everything you say let your words be
24:03 marked by Simplicity and
24:06 sincerity just say yes or
24:08 no anything more than that is of the evil
24:10 evil
24:13 one and so we Christians are not
24:17 released from obeying the moral law of
24:19 God ceremonial law fulfilled in Christ
24:23 the Jewish law of calendars and feasts
24:26 and fasts all fulfilled in Christ the
24:28 moral law fulfilled in Christ and now
24:30 fulfilled in
24:35 us who walk by the grace of God this is
24:36 what Paul talked about over in Romans
24:38 chapter 6 shall we continue in sin that
24:41 Grace May abound and he answers and says
24:43 God forbid and so we're not going to
24:46 listen to the to the antinomian to the
24:48 anarchist who says law is our enemy
24:50 we're not going to listen to the
24:52 legalist who says that law is our master
24:55 we're going to listen to Paul who says
24:58 law is our servant
25:01 now friend if you're unsaved law is your
25:03 master if you are an unsaved person the
25:07 law of God is over your head and God is
25:16 law but those of us who have trusted
25:19 Christ as our savior are no longer under
25:21 law we can't be condemned by law we have
25:24 already been saved by grace and having
25:26 been saved by grace and received a new
25:30 nature law is not our enemy and law is
25:33 not our Master law is our
25:37 servant I do not work to please the law
25:40 the law works for
25:42 me let's look at this
25:45 now Galatians chapter
25:49 3 Paul tells us that we Christians have
25:52 a mature standing before
25:58 God in verse 26 for ye are all the sons
26:01 now our authorized version is children
26:04 but it's not that word for born ones
26:08 it's the word for mature ones for ye all
26:12 are the sons of God by faith in Christ
26:14 when you were born into God's family
26:17 instantly you were adopted to be a
26:19 mature adult
26:22 son God does not deal with us as with little
26:23 little
26:27 babies as far as time is concerned
26:30 someone here may be only 3 days old in the
26:31 the
26:34 Lord and he may be prone to say well I'm
26:36 just a little baby you can't expect a
26:39 whole lot from a baby but the Lord comes
26:40 back and says wait a minute when you got
26:44 saved I adopted you and gave you the
26:46 position and the
26:50 Privileges of an adult
26:53 son that means you know how to talk that
26:56 means you can start walking babies can't
26:58 do this this means you can start signing
27:00 checks and drawing upon your spiritual
27:04 inheritance God deals with us as adult
27:08 sons and none of us can say well I'm too
27:09 immature oh [Music]
27:10 [Music]
27:15 no all of the resources and all of the
27:17 responsibilities and all of the
27:20 riches are available to every saint no
27:24 matter how young or old he may
27:29 be he says in um verse
27:30 verse
27:33 27 that we were baptized by the spirit
27:37 into Christ and we put on Christ may I
27:39 share an interesting truth with
27:43 you in the Roman
27:46 Empire when a child reached the age of
27:49 maturity he changed
27:51 clothes you could always tell how old
27:53 somebody was because if they were
27:54 wearing a certain kind of a garment they
27:59 were immature they were underage
28:01 but when that boy reached that age of
28:04 maturity that age when he was
28:08 accepted he took off a child's garment
28:09 and he put on an adult garment that
28:11 happened to you when you were
28:14 saved the holy spirit of God baptized
28:16 you into the body of Christ and he took
28:18 off the old childish garment and he gave
28:21 you the Garment of righteousness with an
28:24 adult standing before
28:27 God you see laws are necessary for
28:30 immature who are babies when my children
28:34 were all small we had to run our home on
28:38 law don't you go near those stairs do
28:46 socket Don't Go Near the
28:49 highway and our I'm sure that our
28:51 children when they were just getting
28:52 growing up thought boy this is a
28:54 terrible place to live it's a jail don't
28:58 do this and don't do that
28:59 remember the mother who took her little
29:01 son out visiting and the boy looked
29:02 around and this lady had a lot of
29:04 antiques and things and he said oh my
29:13 no but you know what if you don't start
29:15 children off with law they'll never live
29:17 long enough to experience
29:21 Grace they'll either burn themselves or
29:23 kill themselves or run out in front of a
29:25 car or do some dumb
29:29 thing you know our Christian schools and
29:30 I have preached in many many Christian
29:33 Schools our Christian Schools should not
29:34 have to have
29:37 rules every student on that campus
29:38 should be so
29:41 mature that out of love and the grace of
29:43 God he does what's
29:45 right but in every student body you have
29:46 a few
29:50 babies same thing's true of a church you
29:51 have to have certain regulations or you have
29:53 have
29:56 chaos and Paul is saying to us here God
29:59 deals with us as adult Sons we're
30:01 baptized into the body of Christ we're
30:03 all one in Christ now the law separated
30:07 Jew from Gentile Grace doesn't do that
30:10 the law separated men from women the law
30:13 separated slaves from Free People the
30:15 law even separated Rich from poor
30:17 there's special laws for the poor Grace
30:20 doesn't do that Grace says don't drag
30:23 that stuff into here we're all one in
30:25 Jesus Christ through the holy spirit of
30:28 God and he says in verse 29 we're living
30:31 by promise we're not living by threat
30:33 now little children live by
30:36 threats you can't explain to a little
30:40 2-year-old what a 10-ton truck
30:42 is I mean that Highway seems such a
30:46 beautiful place to play jump over the
30:50 yellow line back and forth yeah try to
30:53 explain this to all a child understands
30:55 is punishment and reward punishment and
30:57 reward it's all a child understand then
30:59 it gets older and starts to learn a few
31:01 things you can reason with it and you
31:02 can make
31:06 promises and you no longer say now if
31:08 you go near the highway I'll spank you
31:16 you I make a promise to you if you don't
31:18 go near that highway I promise you the
31:25 you now what do you live by do you have
31:28 joy at night because you you got to wait with
31:32 something you go to bed at night and say
31:35 boy I really con them
31:38 today that's not very
31:41 mature children do this children go to
31:42 bed at night and they' laugh and chuckle
31:44 under the covers and say boy really
31:51 we some of God's children act like that
31:53 you can't fool
31:55 him the mature Christian says the law is
32:02 how does how does the law serve me today
32:04 oh the same way it served me before I got
32:05 got
32:08 saved you know how the law helped me get
32:11 saved how did the law help me get saved
32:14 number one it revealed my sin the holy
32:17 spirit of God took the word of God and
32:20 held it before my face I said hey I'm
32:22 dirty well then I'll start to do better
32:24 I'll be confirmed I'll do this I'll do
32:27 that and the more I tried to save myself
32:29 the more the Jailer came along and said
32:30 no no that won't save you that won't
32:34 save you the law revealed my sin to me
32:38 and the law restrained me and convicted
