0:03 hello everyone from a Mountain Village
0:05 in yunan this is not just any Mountain
0:08 Village though this is the very first
0:10 Village I ever set foot in in China back
0:13 in 2017 I came here to be a teacher at a
0:16 summer camp in the local school with
0:17 about a dozen other University students
0:20 from all over China my very first
0:22 experience in the Chinese Countryside so
0:24 5 years later I'm back here in this
0:26 Village once again we are going to go
0:28 for a little tour and just see if
0:30 anything's changed and reminisce about
0:32 those beautiful days when I lived in
0:35 this Village for a whole 3 weeks so I
0:37 hope you'll be joining us in exploring
0:38 the village that got me completely
1:05 [Music]
1:08 I'm finally back let's see if there's
1:10 anything new and different about this place
1:13 place
1:18 yeah stop on that n in 2017 I came here
1:20 in July in the peak of Summer and it
1:24 looked like this and right now it's
1:28 spring and not as green and Lush lots of
1:30 brown and orange but it is still beautiful
1:31 beautiful [Music]
1:41 nevertheless all right we're finally
1:44 here it is time for the Moment of Truth
1:46 to open this door and check out this
1:54 excited beautiful Village there is a
1:57 freshly new paved Road here this was
2:00 definitely not here before look at this Super
2:01 Super
2:05 Fresh back in the day this was like dirt
2:08 gravel stuff and now it's freshly paved
2:10 there's also a bunch of wood Mills on
2:12 the mountain those were definitely not
2:21 cute so the first thing that like jumped
2:24 out at me as we were driving in here was
2:27 this thingy this like Town Square or
2:28 whatever because this was definitely not
2:30 here last time I don't remember what was
2:32 here but it wasn't this I wish we'd had
2:33 this though because we had the kids do a
2:35 talent show and we totally could have
2:37 done it on this awesome stage but
2:38 instead we did it in the schooly yard
2:41 which was still nice but not as
2:44 nice school is [Music]
2:52 out here it is everyone the legendary
2:54 place where I taught an environmental
2:55 science class to children in this
2:57 Village for 3 weeks we're going to go in
2:59 and take a super quick little tour we
3:01 can't take very long but we can just go
3:02 in and get a quick look of what the
3:11 now trusting our wings to
3:16 fly sometimes we're crashing down but we
3:18 get up and start from the [Music]
3:24 ground so here's one of the little
3:26 classrooms where I taught my little
3:29 environmental class when I tell people I
3:31 did this world education program a lot
3:33 of people assume that I taught English
3:35 but actually I taught my own field of
3:38 study environmental science and ecology
3:39 it was a very interactive class with
3:42 lots of games and art and exercising
3:45 Outdoors because it's summer camp after
3:49 all learning has to be fun not just
3:51 PowerPoints let me show you guys our
3:54 little kitchen dining room place it
3:57 looks exactly the
4:01 same here it is used to have have our
4:02 lunch and dinner and breakfast
4:05 everything in this little
4:12 here so I actually have a very tragic
4:15 memory in this kitchen this is where I
4:18 got the worst food poisoning of my
4:21 entire life all the food is being cooked
4:23 by University students and I got food
4:27 poisoning so yeah sad story it happened
4:29 right here in this legendary very
4:32 Unforgettable little kitchen other than
4:34 that little setback though it was all
4:36 great memories and it was a good time
4:39 you know it really makes you reminisce
4:42 about your days as a child going to and
4:44 from school with your little backpack [Music]
4:48 [Music]
4:51 on so now that we've seen the school
4:53 let's check out some of the surrounding villages
5:06 I not a fan of hard buil eggs at all I
5:08 just I just don't like them okay but
5:10 those chickens we just saw they make
5:13 like the most delicious hardboiled eggs
5:15 the best hardboiled eggs I've ever had
5:17 in my whole life we're right here in this
5:23 Village each day after Camp got out a
5:25 few of us would walk home with the kids
5:27 and do a home visitation and chat with
5:29 their parents or grandparents our
5:31 organization had this rule that you had
5:33 to reject everything they give you any
5:35 gifts or any food but it was impossible
5:37 they were always giving us fruit and
5:39 boiling eggs for us and for one group I
5:41 wasn't there that day the local family
5:44 even cooked a whole chicken for them it
5:45 was actually quite a struggle to
5:47 communicate with the older generation
5:49 because they didn't speak Mandarin well
5:51 or at all the local language here is
5:53 Nasi but we had fun with the home
5:56 visitations anyway one parent even drove
5:58 us to a local tourist attraction as he
6:00 called it this little Blue pond and I
6:02 don't remember who took this selfie but
6:04 it definitely wasn't me because that
6:07 filter is off the- wall [Music]
6:54 I got everything so it would have been
6:57 nice if we had this in 2017 but we did
6:58 not we just had the tiny convenience
7:00 store with like five varieties of snacks
7:02 and if you wanted anything other than
7:05 that go to lead down so we went to lead
7:06 down quite a few times there was a van
7:08 that came through twice a day and you
7:10 could take that van to the young and if
7:12 you missed the van then you had to wait
7:14 in the road and see if you were lucky
7:16 enough to catch a ride with someone
7:34 unfortunately it's just been too long
7:35 since I've been here I don't have the
7:37 contact information of anybody anymore I
7:40 can't really like find any of the people
7:42 that I knew when I was here but I'm just
7:44 here to check out this Village just
7:49 reminisce in this beautiful place [Music]
8:03 this is like the peak potato planting
8:06 time so everybody is out in their fields
8:19 oh life is pretty simple here but it's
8:21 also so full of beautiful details if you
8:24 look closely especially the architecture
8:25 there's so many interesting Little
8:28 Critters carved on people's roofs [Music]
10:00 byebye these humongous hairy looking
10:03 Stacks right here are actually the local
10:06 homemade organic fertilizer these are
10:08 pine needles that they collect from the
10:10 Pine Forest all around this place and
10:11 then they mix in poop from the local
10:13 livestock poop has the nutrients and
10:15 then you mix it with pine needles so it
10:17 has like the perfect kind of dryish
10:19 consistency and then they've got it all
10:21 over the soil here to keep the nutrients
10:25 coming in season after season [Music]
10:58 looks like I accidentally upset the
11:02 guard goose the garus is going [Music]
11:03 [Music] [Applause]
11:06 [Applause] [Music]
11:58 for there are lots of new paved roads a
12:01 New Town Square a new grocery store
12:03 fancy solar street lights some nice
12:06 upgrades over the past 5 years there
12:07 probably won't be any upgrades that are
12:09 too dramatic though because for the
12:11 younger generation there is limited
12:13 appeal in living in the countryside no
12:16 matter how nice the infrastructure gets
12:18 and more and more people are shifting
12:20 over to urban areas like Le down the closest
12:22 closest
12:24 city I'm not sure what lies ahead for
12:27 taian but I'm glad I got to be a tiny
12:29 part of this place even if just for a
12:31 short 3 weeks and it was nice to see it
12:34 again and bring back old memories I hope
12:36 to come back again in another few years
12:38 and see how life is going over here even
12:40 if tyion doesn't remember me I will
12:42 always remember it as being an extremely
12:45 unique experience for the 2017 me who
12:48 had only just recently arrived in China
12:50 and everything was new and crazy and
12:52 unexpected it was great to be a part of
12:55 that summer camp and I wish you the best
