0:02 I'm just going to get right to the point
0:04 because I want to keep this video short
0:08 and then I'll explain my point the point
0:09 is this
0:12 if you're in a classroom
0:15 and there are people in your class
0:18 and you feel like
0:20 you are behind those people
0:22 you feel like
0:24 there is no way
0:27 that you could become as good as they are
0:29 are
0:31 then the point is
0:33 that it only takes two weeks
0:35 two weeks
0:37 you could do it in two weeks
0:39 and so let me let me explain this because
0:40 because
0:43 this was actually a comment that someone made
0:44 made
0:48 in a room I was in many years ago
0:51 there was this math professor who
0:53 I didn't really know
0:56 and he was talking to a student who I
0:58 didn't really know
0:59 and the conversation went something like this
1:00 this
1:02 the student was
1:06 feeling like you know they were behind
1:09 and the professor was saying well you
1:11 know when students feel that way you
1:13 know I always tell them you know you're
1:15 really only two weeks behind you might
1:17 think that you can't catch up to them
1:19 you might think that you can't be as
1:21 good as they are you might think that
1:23 you can't improve your mathematics to
1:25 get to the level where they are because
1:26 they're succeeding and maybe you're not
1:29 but the reality is it only takes two weeks
1:30 weeks
1:32 and so I left the room and I thought
1:33 about it
1:36 and it didn't make any sense I mean how
1:38 is this guy going to know that it only
1:40 takes two weeks right because different
1:42 people are at different levels so how
1:44 does this comment make any sense at all
1:46 you know people say things all the time
1:48 so why is this true
1:51 and so here's the rationale
1:54 when you are in a classroom in college
1:56 and I'll just use the us as an example
1:59 but it's probably true in most places in
2:01 the world if you're in a classroom
2:03 there's usually some requirement
2:06 that is needed for you to be there for
2:07 example in the US when you go to college
2:10 you take some entrance exam and they
2:13 place you in a class they say okay you
2:14 can go into a college algebra okay
2:16 you're really good at math we can put
2:19 you in calculus there's a placement test
2:21 and people always criticize these tests
2:23 and they criticize the system and that's
2:25 fine you can criticize it but there
2:28 exists some sort of placement where
2:30 people are put into classrooms it
2:32 doesn't have to be perfect but there is
2:33 a system
2:36 and so by some sense everyone in that
2:38 class is somehow supposed to be equal
2:39 but we all know that's not true right
2:40 different people have different
2:42 abilities different talents different
2:46 intellects but the system puts us all in
2:47 this place
2:50 and so the rationale is that if you work
2:51 hard enough
2:54 within two weeks you should be able to
2:55 catch up
2:57 and I agree I think it's possible I
2:59 think it's possible now after years of
3:01 just reflecting on the statement and
3:04 thinking it was just bogus I think I
3:06 think you can do it because think about
3:08 it everyone is roughly equal if if I
3:12 think of all the students that I've had
3:14 in all the classes I've ever taught and
3:15 I think about
3:17 some of the worst students like the
3:21 students that they were just really bad
3:23 I had something that had really really
3:25 bad issues with math some that were just
3:27 not very good
3:29 and I look at the best students
3:31 could these students who were really bad
3:34 actually catch up and you know get the
3:37 same grade on the test as one of the
3:39 good students absolutely yes absolutely
3:43 definitely 100 I know because I would
3:45 make the tests I know that if they knew
3:49 X Y and Z they could get a 100 on the test
3:50 test
3:52 you know and I would go over stuff in
3:53 class and I would teach everything and
3:55 explain everything so in theory if they
3:57 could learn everything I was teaching
4:00 they could get a 100 every single time
4:02 they just actually had to learn it which
4:04 takes a lot of effort and a lot of time
4:07 and for some people learning those
4:09 things is actually going to take more
4:11 time because they're so behind
4:12 but you could do it in two weeks you
4:14 could definitely do it in fact it might
4:16 even take a week
4:18 the real question is
4:20 you know how bad do you want it
4:22 especially if you're in a situation
4:23 where your math is really bad I mean
4:25 let's use let's use algebra as an
4:27 example let's say you're really bad at algebra
4:28 algebra
4:30 and you're trying to get better and
4:32 you're in a class and you're not doing
4:34 well right there's people in your class
4:36 that are doing well well maybe they had
4:38 algebra before in high school maybe they
4:40 you know they saw it before maybe their
4:42 parents are Math teachers whatever
4:45 the only thing you can do in situations
4:47 like that is just work harder and really
4:49 just grind you have to grind and grind
4:51 and grind and you can do it so I just
4:53 wanted to make this short video to
4:55 indicate that I think it's possible I
4:57 really do I think that if you're in a
5:00 classroom and you're in a bad situation
5:01 and you're not doing well
5:03 you can pull yourself out of that
5:05 situation if you work really hard and
5:07 you just have to grind
5:08 one idea
5:11 is to just do every single homework
5:13 problem multiple times this is what I
5:16 did I was obsessed I would do so many
5:19 math problems and that's all I did you
5:20 know on weekends too you know people
5:22 would go to school they do their
5:24 homework they'd finish it they'd go out
5:25 with their friends
5:27 no I didn't do that all right I didn't
5:29 do that I just stayed home on weekends
5:30 and studied
5:33 studied every afternoon after class
5:35 it's about how bad you want it
5:39 so it's possible so if you're in a class
5:41 and you're failing
5:47 don't think that way it's not about passing
5:48 passing
5:50 it's about getting a hundred
5:54 aim to be the best aim to score a
5:56 perfect score because if you aim high
5:58 and you miss
6:00 you're probably still going to do pretty well
6:01 well
6:03 two weeks right two weeks is all it
6:06 takes you really can't do it you really
6:07 can't do it and I thought about this
6:08 guy's comment for years because I was
6:11 thinking two weeks it doesn't make sense
6:13 from the perspective of okay you might
6:15 have this friend who's in another math
6:17 club like say you're an algebra and your
6:18 friend is in calculus three no you're
6:20 not going to be able to catch up to him
6:22 in two weeks right but if you're in the
6:24 same class and you're comparing yourself
6:26 to another student in your class and
6:28 that student is getting A's and you're
6:29 getting F's
6:32 you can actually Rise From the Ashes and
6:33 do better and get an A on the next test
6:36 I've seen people do it they completely
6:38 change their study habits they go from
6:42 not taking notes skipping class to going
6:44 to class every day asking questions
6:46 doing all the homework going to office
6:49 hours asking questions multiple times
6:51 don't be afraid to be annoying a lot of students
6:53 students
6:55 um I feel like they're lost in class and
6:57 they're scared to ask questions I used
7:00 to be that way don't be like me right
7:02 it's funny I'm telling you not to be
7:04 like I was but it's good advice because
7:05 that's something that I should have done
7:07 do I have regrets no because I don't
7:08 believe in regrets
7:11 just regret to accomplish nothing all
7:12 you can do is change
7:15 the present and hope that it affects
7:16 your future
7:18 because that's all we have control over
7:20 is the present
7:23 so it's possible it's possible pick
7:26 yourself up and work harder you could do
7:28 it I mean you could do it it's
7:30 mathematics and it applies to other
7:31 subjects as well but I have more
7:33 experience with math so I'm speaking
7:35 only here of mathematics in mathematics
7:37 you know if you're in if you're in an
7:39 algebra class or a trig class and let's
7:40 say you're using this book here
7:42 fundamentals of algebra and trig by
7:43 swachowski great book
7:45 you know pick up the book do all the
7:47 problems from the section do all the
7:48 homework go over all of your notes
7:50 you're gonna get better you're gonna get
7:52 better it's possible it just takes extra
7:55 work and it's about how bad do you want
7:57 it it really comes down to that
7:58 so you should know that deep down inside
8:01 you can do it it's just a matter of do
8:03 you want to do it a lot of times I think that
8:04 that
8:06 people think they can't do it
8:10 and I believe they can it's just do they
8:12 really want to do you really want to
8:14 spend that much time doing math I mean
8:15 there's other things in life that are
8:18 important too right but if it matters to
8:20 you you can make the effort and you can
8:21 succeed and that's all I wanted to say
8:24 in this video I believe in the two-week
8:27 rule two weeks in two weeks you can
8:29 catch up to a classmate
8:30 if you rock it I think that
8:32 mathematician who said that I remember
8:34 his name but I won't mention it and I
8:37 talked to him once briefly and that's
8:39 no comment I didn't really know him so
8:41 but he was right
8:42 I believe what he said he was a smart
8:45 man and he was right
8:47 if you want to learn mathematics I do
8:50 have courses maths sorcerer.com please
8:52 use the links on my website if you
8:53 decide to buy my courses they're
8:55 actually on the udemy site if you're not
8:57 a subscriber and you want to subscribe
8:59 consider hitting the Subscribe button today
8:59 today
9:02 and it's possible it's possible it
9:04 really is I want to emphasize that I
9:06 believe that you can do it if you are
9:09 failing your class I just from teaching
9:12 so many years it took me a long time to
9:13 believe this guy I was like two weeks
9:15 but he was talking about people in the
9:17 same class so if you're in the same
9:19 class with someone and you're comparing
9:21 yourself and you want to get the grades
9:22 they're getting I really think it's
9:24 possible to catch up in two weeks I
9:26 think that's more than enough time a
9:28 week maybe two weeks I think that's a
9:30 lot more realistic to catch up to them
9:32 and do as well as they're doing I think
9:34 it's possible
9:37 anyways until next time good luck take
