0:01 you probably have an idea of the watches
0:04 you want to buy but do you know about
0:06 the ones you really shouldn't today I'm
0:07 going to set the matter straight and
0:09 tell you which watches you shouldn't
0:11 even Sully your barge pole with the last
0:18 important watches that look deceptively
0:20 similar to the one you really want I
0:22 know what it's like those pesky watch
0:24 makers keep making watches that you
0:26 really want but you can't have them
0:28 because those same pesky watch makers
0:31 also really want to make a lot of money
0:33 and so as we've all done at some point
0:35 or another you found yourself
0:37 entertaining the idea of purchasing a
0:39 fake it's like the good old days of
0:41 movies surreptitiously filmed at a
0:43 crotch ey view there was that one guy
0:46 your dad knew down the pub that had all
0:48 the latest Blockbusters Jurassic Place
0:51 men in suits and of course the animated
0:54 classic lion time the sound quality was
0:56 so good you could almost hear it and
0:58 despite being harassed by videos you'd
1:00 actually paid for that your actions
1:03 would destroy Hollywood nothing happened
1:05 well they can't blame you for Marvel at
1:08 least so what harm is getting that fake
1:11 really doing well Lots really watch
1:12 makers aren't just companies they're
1:15 groups of impassioned people making what
1:17 they love and their HR departments okay
1:19 so they're not all beaming at their
1:21 workstations like happy little elves but
1:23 they are doing work that makes you want
1:25 that watch and when you buy a fake
1:27 you're only buying that fake because of
1:30 the work they did and so if you like
1:32 what they do support it and if you don't
1:35 don't make other people think you do by
1:37 buying a fake either the same watch like
1:40 a 100 times you remember during the
1:42 pandemic there were people loading up
1:43 their shopping trolleys with a mountain
1:45 of toilet paper and the world
1:47 collectively wished upon them a night of
1:49 a thousand shet doubly so when they
1:51 weren't just Panic buying but
1:53 intentionally creating scarcity to push
1:55 up resale the feeling is mutual for
1:58 people who have a whole ton of the same
2:00 watch now I'm not talking about
2:02 collectors who like to stick to a theme
2:04 that's a special kind of weird but I get
2:06 it got to catch them all no I mean when
2:09 you've got so many of exactly the same
2:11 thing it starts to look like you might
2:13 be the kind of person who has a hidden
2:15 chest freezer but instead of a simple
2:17 social disconnect SL murderous tendency
2:20 buying lots of the same watch tends to H
2:22 towards the side of resale and that's
2:24 kind of unfair if the watch is hard to
2:26 get there's no way anyone is enjoying
2:28 nine of exactly the same thing except
2:31 for my wife and pastels she'll only eat
2:33 the red ones watches from the same place
2:35 you get your clothes like any
2:37 self-respecting man I have my favorite
2:39 store for buying all my clothes I found
2:41 a pair of jeans I liked bought nine of
2:43 them and that will keep me going until
2:45 the smell becomes too unbearable or I
2:48 blow out the underside t-shirts too I
2:50 have all the colors except for the ones
2:52 on the next shelf along because I
2:53 couldn't be bothered to reach for them
2:55 and if everything is perfectly optimal
2:57 on my denial shopping trip I will buy
2:59 both jeans and t-shirts from the the
3:02 same Shar doesn't matter how much the
3:04 bill is at the end it's always too much
3:06 there's no jeans and t-shirt Emporium
3:08 expensive enough to also consider buying
3:10 your watch from just don't even think
3:13 about it would you buy engine oil from a
3:15 Dairy Farmer aside from running the risk
3:17 of a greasy Milkshake the two things are
3:19 so completely different it would be too
3:22 ridiculous to even contemplate and given
3:24 that the seams of my jeans seem to blow
3:26 out faster than ever I'm not sure I
3:27 trust them to make a watch that won't
3:29 have a pair of Wheels hanging out the
3:31 aside before too long I watch you sold
3:33 because you didn't like it but now you
3:35 think you do have you ever heard of the
3:38 expression out of sight out of mind well
3:40 there's also the less popular but still
3:42 relevant out of sight but I want to put
3:44 it back into my sight because I've
3:46 changed my mind they're still working on
3:48 it if you've gone to all the trouble of
3:50 getting rid of something it was probably
3:53 for a reason don't do what my Dar dog
3:55 does with Anchovies and nibble it spit
3:57 it out in disgust look at it on the
4:00 floor think ooh delicious and repeat the
4:02 whole process ad nauseum you may think
4:04 you've matured or you'll feel
4:06 differently about it this time but
4:08 that's exactly what the English public
4:10 thinks every time the men's team plays
4:13 football on the world stage no we won't
4:15 be good this time we'll be crap like
4:18 every other time try a different watch
4:20 and if you still can't stop thinking
4:21 about that old watch you had and got rid
4:23 of because you didn't like it anymore
4:25 try as anx the watch you think makes you
4:27 look like a big shot I once bought a hat
4:30 I thought I'd look incredibly cool in I
4:33 didn't I look like I'd lost my carer I
4:35 realized some things that day one I
4:37 didn't have a head for hats and two
4:39 inanimate adornments aren't a Magic
4:41 Bullet For Change really these
4:43 decorations we buy for ourselves are
4:46 just that decorations that accentuate or
4:48 distract from what's already there take
4:50 the humble Christmas tree if we could
4:52 get away with wrapping tinsel and
4:54 twinkly lights around a vacuum cleaner
4:56 we would instead we use it to Hoover up
4:59 all those supposedly non-drop needles so
5:00 don't don't buy a watch thinking it's
5:02 going to change your persona and make
5:05 you look different if you saw Jason Stan
5:06 wearing a Panerai and think it's going
5:08 to make your thinning hair a feature
5:10 instead of a flaw think again watch is
5:12 in disrepair you think you can fix yes
5:14 I've watched wristwatch Revival too and
5:16 now I think I'm an expert I can say
5:18 things like there's endshake in my
5:20 balance how much hope do I have in
5:23 repairing a likely damag wristwatch less
5:25 than zero hope Marshall makes it look
5:27 easy because of an unfair Advantage he
5:30 has called practice I know in the same
5:32 way we're all above average drivers just
5:34 waiting for our Breakin F1 I imagine
5:37 we'd also be expert watch makers in no
5:39 time if only we got around to it and why
5:41 waste time by practicing it when you can
5:43 immediately get to work on what was
5:44 still a pretty expensive watch that's
5:46 now not going back together properly and
5:48 I think I've broken it more fixing
5:50 watches is a lot like picking up dog
5:52 crap if you finish up without getting in
5:55 the you've done a good job and when you
5:57 first try watch making it's like picking
5:59 up dog crap in a hurricane with your
6:02 your eyes shut learning is fun and I
6:04 encourage it but maybe start on
6:06 something simpler like an old pocket
6:08 watch or Lego watches with stupid Back
6:11 stories and pictures of people Outdoors
6:13 computer design cheaper manufacturing
6:15 and cheap business loans have made it
6:17 easier than ever before to make a watch
6:19 now before you go off a hollering and a
6:22 hooting I said a watch not a good watch
6:24 making a good watch as is immediately
6:27 apparent when you go trolling for one is
6:30 not easy at all it requires things like
6:32 creativity experience and an
6:34 understanding of design without those
6:36 things there is another option make a
6:39 watch anyway and give it an origin story
6:40 to make up for the sheer lack of
6:42 anything else interesting to say about
6:45 it perhaps the watch was concocted mid
6:47 hot air balloon race or perhaps the
6:49 founder has The Uncanny ability to talk
6:52 to dogs or maybe just maybe the company
6:53 was founded to honor the Fallen of the
6:56 great cheese roll of 2005 don't form for
6:59 these Illusions it's trickery deceit
7:00 behind the the beguiling Tales of
7:02 romance and Adventure on the number four
7:04 bus from centry are watches that are as
7:07 Bland as a clip Show episode of Two and
7:09 a Half Men sponsored by bread but if
7:11 that doesn't get you they've got another
7:13 trick too and that's not just showing
7:15 you the watches but showing you the
7:16 watches on the wrists of people enjoying
7:19 this big scary place called outside look
7:21 what fun they're having see how they
7:23 Frolic with their friends that's not
7:25 real that's a casting call for handsome
7:28 30s somethings cheap watches because
7:30 they're cheap the fear of missing out or
7:32 fomo as I believe it was coined
7:34 according to the Internet by Dr Sigman
7:36 Freud during a conversation with Abraham
7:38 Lincoln is real and it runs deep in
7:40 watch collectors there's even a
7:42 mathematical formula that goes something
7:44 like this am I buying a watch right now
7:48 plus no equals sadness if we had all the
7:50 money we'd buy all the watches but
7:52 unfortunately for most people that's not
7:54 how it works we have some of the money
7:56 and usually not that much of it so the
7:58 opportunity to buy a watch doesn't come
8:00 all too often when those watches are as
8:02 they so often tend to be skirting the
8:04 limits of our financial boundaries like
8:06 a Russian sub there is a solution to
8:09 that although I don't condone it buying
8:11 cheap watches are there great cheap
8:12 watches out there yes should your
8:14 collection include some of them why not
8:16 should you buy cheap watches literally
8:18 because you can what do you think a
8:20 watch you can buy right here right now
8:22 can become overwhelmingly tempting
8:24 despite not actually being the one you
8:27 want simply because it's available sober
8:29 up or you'll regret it in the morning
8:31 flick through the Rolex catalog and get
8:33 it out of your system because when
8:35 posturology Clarity hits you and you
8:37 realize you just push the watch you want
8:39 back another month you're going to wish
8:41 you hadn't the watch that laughs at your
8:43 salary and then eats it I don't really
8:45 like the idea of logic because logic
8:47 isn't infallible it should be by
8:49 definition but as my old Nan used to say
8:52 it's not what it is it's how you use it
8:53 let me give you an example let's say I
8:56 can afford about $5,000 at a push on a
8:58 watch that's the big one the 40th
9:00 birthday or whatever but let's say if I
9:03 bought a $10,000 watch I could get one
9:05 that's worth 2 Grand more out the door
9:07 sounds like sensible reasoning doesn't
9:10 it except that plan relies on the sale
9:12 of said watch which isn't the plan at
9:14 all it's a mirage a ghost and paying
9:17 $10,000 still costs twice as much as
9:20 $5,000 they call this kind of thinking
9:22 man maths and it's used to justify
9:24 irrational and dangerous expenditure I
9:26 don't call it that I call it passion
9:29 rationalization or passional
9:31 it's fine to play fast and loose with
9:34 the rules because it makes us happy yeah
9:36 sure it does until it doesn't we work so
9:38 hard for our money and sometimes it
9:40 seems like we can't get rid of it all
9:43 fast enough they also say money can't
9:45 buy happiness I don't know I've never
9:46 been able to hang on to it long enough
9:48 to find out any watch that claims to
9:50 make your life better I don't mean how
9:52 protectful makes an adjacent promise to
9:54 stop your son growing up to hate you
9:57 with the offer of a free watch but risor
9:59 smart timekeeping devices that claim to
10:02 improve everything with data people seem
10:03 to be covering themselves with more
10:05 senses than a Formula 1 car under the
10:07 guise that it'll make them a better
10:09 person I don't know if you've noticed
10:11 but we come fresh out the box with
10:13 inbuilt senses already they're called
10:15 feelings and generally speaking they do
10:16 a cracking job of telling us when things
10:19 are good and things are bad I get it if
10:21 you have some sort of medical thing I
10:22 don't expect you to guess your blood
10:25 sugar based on feel but more data
10:27 doesn't always mean more good in many
10:29 cases it's more overwhelming more
10:31 confusing more stressful especially in
10:33 relation to health and relaxation it's
10:36 so easy to draw the wrong and worst
10:38 conclusion from data that really all it
10:40 does is spiral the problem it was
10:43 intended to fix as in F1 even with all
10:46 the satellites and Radars and sensors
10:47 sometimes the easiest way to see if it's
10:50 raining is to hold your hand out watches
10:52 that lean too heavily on the word
10:54 Innovation right I don't know if you've
10:56 noticed this but watches mechanical
10:58 watches are pointless once upon a time
11:00 they were the the greatest thing since
11:01 we broke at a deal with dogs to bite
11:03 other people and not us but now they're
11:06 consigned to the same bin as the filofax
11:08 and mixtapes so when I'm enjoying my
11:10 daily dose of watch blur and I see the
11:13 word Innovation pop up I'm always
11:15 intrigued surely not has this
11:17 200-year-old manufacturer of sparkly
11:19 Antiquities finally invented a portable
11:21 way to itch the part of my back I can't
11:23 reach or perhaps they've discovered a
11:24 form of leather that actually smells
11:27 better the more I sweat into it no
11:29 whatever it is it's always as Innovative
11:32 as a soluble anchor yet they just can't
11:33 help themselves but dish out that word
11:36 like horological Oprah it's all part of
11:38 Watch manufactur Bingo and the more
11:40 words like that I read the more
11:41 disappointing I know the actual watch
11:44 will be on paper watches that are uglier
11:47 than death I bought a printer recently
11:49 yes sick of the inkjet cartel and its
11:51 self- ulating cartridges I invested in
11:54 lasers the future we were all promised I
11:56 never knew life could be this fun the
11:58 criteria for me was that it had to hold
11:59 a bunch of paper fit on the table I
12:02 already had and print what I told it to
12:04 when I damn well told it to and not
12:05 after printing out something it fancied
12:07 with bits missing never in that
12:09 decision-making process did I care what
12:11 it looked like would it be cooler if it
12:14 were styled like a 50s jukebox business
12:16 idea of course it would did that matter
12:18 to me no because I hadn't dreamt of one
12:21 day owning a laser printer okay maybe a
12:23 little watches a different it can have
12:25 all the sapphire all the chronometer and
12:27 all the hacking you like that doesn't
12:29 mean diddly do if it's ugly than a pig
12:32 on a pylon these watches aren't white
12:34 goods they're pointless for a start you
12:36 can't fulfill the want of wanting with a
12:39 SPC sheet a watch you're pretending to
12:41 like furthermore don't say you do like
12:44 that watch when you clearly don't no one
12:47 can it's an Abomination yes it's the
12:49 cheapest insert complication here yes
12:51 it's got 20% off in the sale that
12:53 definitely doesn't happen at every
12:55 legally allowable opportunity and yes
12:56 it's made by a brand that somehow
12:58 escapes the eye of the watch's circle
13:00 jerk subred it but stop that's not love
13:02 your feeling that's a desperate hope
13:04 that somehow the universe has cut you a
13:07 break sorry it hasn't that only happens
13:09 to other people any watch you could
13:11 realistically use as a shield I'm not
13:13 really one for telling people what kind
13:15 of style suits them best unless it
13:17 really really doesn't and I'm afraid
13:19 when the watch looks like it's wearing
13:21 you that's my threshold the big watch
13:23 Trend died with short sleeves over long
13:25 sleeves and home ownership and we're
13:26 heading back to where this all started
13:28 small when a watch is doing a possible
13:30 impression of the Space Needle on your
13:32 wrist I'm afraid it's just not going to
13:34 work out why does it look so wrong
13:36 clowns maybe if we lived in an alternate
13:38 universe where people didn't dress up in
13:40 equal parts amusing and terrifying
13:43 outfits to entertain and traumatize an
13:45 oversized watch might look fine as it
13:47 happens they go in the same pile as long
13:50 shoes big noses and vacant murderous
13:52 stairs the watch you think is going to
13:54 make you rich there are two ways to make
13:56 a fortune one way is to work hard and
13:58 the other way is to have someone give it
14:00 to to you one is easier than the other
14:02 and statistically speaking neither will
14:05 work for you because actually there's a
14:07 third way and by Third Way I mean only
14:10 way look some people made a whole ton of
14:12 money buying steel some people made a
14:14 whole ton of money buying Bitcoin some
14:17 people made a whole ton of money buying
14:20 watches loads more people didn't most of
14:22 them in fact and by the time the news
14:24 reaches Us slot that it's even possible
14:26 that ship hasn't just sailed it's been
14:28 decommissioned and dismantled for scrap
14:30 the guys who made a bunch of cash on
14:32 watches had the watches before anyone
14:35 had any idea that they would be worth a
14:37 bunch of cash the people who own them
14:39 now are the ones who got stuck with them
14:41 after they stopped being worth a bunch
14:43 of cash it's for the best to just be a
14:45 casual Observer a watch you hope will
14:48 stop you thinking about that other watch
14:49 it's pretty wild when you think about it
14:51 that we can take a pill that stops US
14:53 feeling pain like whatever's causing the
14:55 pain can still be there but that pill
14:57 stands in front of it points somewhere
14:58 else and says to your brain oh look a
15:01 squirrel and it works now I may have
15:02 flunked my online med school course and
15:04 I may be practicing without a license
15:06 but I know enough to tell you that
15:08 buying watches doesn't work in the same
15:10 way you can't pick up something that's
15:12 available to you and hope it distracts
15:14 you from something else that as of yet
15:16 isn't if anything it does the opposite
15:18 by making it more apparent that the
15:20 watch you want is now even further away
15:22 it's like a hammer Blow To The Head to
15:25 cure knee pain which I am proud to say
15:27 my medical firm no longer practices any
15:29 what you plan on getting used to here's
15:31 a real fact for you about me I don't
15:33 drink I mean I consume liquids but
15:35 non-alcoholic ones only it's not a moral
15:37 or religious thing I just don't
15:39 particularly like it no not even that
15:42 one yes I have tried it why are you so
15:44 desperate to justify your day drinking
15:46 to me arti Merill upon hearing this
15:48 information the reasoning I receive in
15:50 reply most often is that I'm simply not
15:53 used to it yet not accustomed like those
15:55 first few ball shriveling moments in a
15:57 cold sea that eventually fade away well
16:00 news flash I don't like the cold sea
16:02 either and I already have a list of
16:05 things I very much do like I'm happy to
16:07 try new things but I'm not willing to
16:09 keep trying them over and over in the
16:11 hope that one day they'll become
16:14 tolerable and I implore you not to apply
16:16 anti maral's advice to watch it either
16:18 don't buy it thinking that if you wear
16:20 it out and about a few times that you'll
16:22 start to warm to it doesn't matter that
16:24 everyone else has got one if they all
16:26 jumped into a hublo store would you do
16:28 that too watches you have already
16:31 decided you won't wear have you ever had
16:32 that experience where everyone else in
16:34 the world does something different to
16:36 you something you thought was completely
16:38 normal like wearing swimming trunks in
16:40 the shower or standing up to wipe sorry
16:42 dude I hate to break it to you but
16:44 that's just you well apparently there
16:45 are people who buy watches that they
16:48 know they won't wear before they've even
16:49 got them I don't have any particular
16:51 advice or Insight on this one because I
16:54 don't really understand why I'm not even
16:55 talking about people who buy them to
16:57 invest but who genuinely pick a watch
16:59 they think they want and order it whilst
17:01 also being pretty plain with themselves
17:03 about their likelihood of actually
17:05 wearing it is that you help me out here
17:08 why a watch you didn't know about more
17:10 than 5 minutes ago impulses are great
17:12 things there's one that says take your
17:15 hand off that it's really H I use that
17:17 one a lot when cooking or another one
17:18 that goes why don't you steer the car
17:20 into the central reservation and see
17:22 what happens that one's less useful I've
17:24 only used it once somewhere in between
17:26 the really handy ones and the plain
17:28 psychotic ones is that fell that tells
17:30 you to buy something you've literally
17:32 just discovered it very rationally lists
17:34 all the clear-cut reasons why that thing
17:35 is the answer to the mysteries of life
17:37 of the Universe and everything and why
17:38 it will help you achieve purest
17:41 Enlightenment and I will admit there's
17:43 nothing quite as satisfying as finally
17:45 discovering the perfect Gizmo for
17:47 solving that very particular problem but
17:49 with watches there isn't a problem to
17:51 solve in fact so much of the enjoyment
17:54 comes from taking the time to mull
17:56 mulling is also one of the most
17:59 satisfying things to do I've mold over
18:02 things for literal years take time to
18:04 enjoy taking Time watches that attempt
18:06 to meet an empty need for fulfillment
18:07 think of the human brain as a piece of
18:10 unironically relevant swiss cheese there
18:11 are lots of different holes or different
18:13 shapes and sizes that can be plugged by
18:15 doing different things some of the
18:18 smaller ones are indeed fulfilled by
18:20 making a watch purchase or by going on a
18:23 trip or even eating a damn good sandwich
18:25 but others are different those only fit
18:27 spending time with friends and family or
18:29 feeling like you're actions are a net
18:31 contribution buying watches just won't
