0:02 maybe you're new to resin 3D printing
0:04 and you're wondering which resin is
0:06 actually the best for printing
0:09 Miniatures or maybe you found that the
0:12 resin you have used it's way too brittle
0:14 and it can't handle you painting the
0:16 Miniatures and playing with them or
0:18 maybe you're even wondering what do I
0:22 get if I pay more for resin I have the
0:24 same questions as you and I decided to
0:27 just test a bunch of different resins
0:29 and see what you got at different price
0:31 points if you just want the cheapest of
0:33 cheapest resin you can get your hands on
0:37 and you want to print in bulk I think
0:39 sunlu standard is the best choice you
0:41 need to buy it in bulk and you need to
0:44 buy it directly from sunlu on a sale
0:48 which they have constantly but it is
0:51 brittle as all hell when I first bought
0:53 resin like this I was convinced the
0:56 quality of the print would suffer and
0:59 the details would be blurred or not as
1:02 sh as other resins but unless you're
1:05 putting your prints under a microscope
1:08 it turns out all of the resins are
1:10 pretty good at capturing details what
1:13 you will see a difference in from a
1:16 cheap resin to a more expensive resin is
1:19 britness but also sort of the finish of
1:21 the print the cheaper ones they don't
1:23 have as nice a finish how easy the
1:26 details are to see out of the printer if
1:28 you paint your Miniatures that becomes
1:30 largely irrelevant
1:32 this will mostly be something you are
1:34 concerned about if you're taking photos
1:37 directly of your prints or filming for
1:39 YouTube so if you want the cheapest go
1:42 with the cheapest these are all standard
1:45 or basic resins and they are very very
1:47 similar across all of the brands so what
1:50 are the downsides of cheap basic resins
1:52 well they're brittle as hell your
1:54 Miniatures will break just by minor
1:56 bumps uh they can't handle a fall from a
1:59 table and even when you paint them you
2:01 can sometimes break them me personally I
2:05 like a good deal I really like value but
2:08 I also hate waste while pending tons of
2:10 minis for cheap is fun I simply hate
2:13 shattering something I've painted if I
2:14 am going to use my time painting
2:18 something it needs to last and gluing a
2:20 shattered resin model back together is
2:24 not fun it's often not worth the effort
2:27 if it is even possible at all also you
2:29 will find that you can print a lot more
2:32 than you can paint so flooding your
2:35 space with prints is way too easy in my
2:37 experience it's better to spend a bit
2:39 more than this to get some Better
2:41 Properties in your resin so let's put
2:44 this aside these are all basic or
2:47 standard resins and they are almost
2:49 completely similar they are all brittle
2:52 they all have fine detail they have very
2:54 similar properties speaking of
2:57 properties these are the factors at play
3:00 in the resin you use for printing all of
3:02 the resins we use in printing can cure
3:04 when they are exposed to UV light you
3:06 don't want to buy a resin that cures
3:08 when exposed to air that's going to be a
3:11 very bad experience some of the resins
3:13 can be washed with Waters and other
3:15 claims to be able to be washed with
3:18 water they have different odors they all
3:21 expose Vox or volatile organic compounds
3:24 the strength or durability of the resin
3:26 when cured is determined by a lot of
3:28 things actually the flexibility the
3:31 tensile strength the impact resistant
3:35 and so on often low viscosity or runny
3:38 resin will be brittle and will be able
3:41 to be cured a bit faster in each layer
3:43 High viscosity resin needs a bit more
3:45 cure time per layer but it's also often
3:48 more durable the viscosity of the resin
3:50 will change with temperature so you will
3:52 find that on in higher temperatures your
3:54 resin will flow a bit faster that's
3:57 actually preferred the ideal exposure
3:59 time for a layer will also change with
4:01 the temperature and the viscosity stable
4:04 temperatures are much preferred when
4:06 printing like this some resins need
4:09 higher temperatures but they all want
4:12 sort of high temperatures think at least
4:16 20° and sometimes even 25° C the colors
4:18 of the resin can have an impact on the
4:21 properties of the resin so the same
4:23 color in the same type of resin or brand
4:26 might require a bit more exposure time a
4:27 bit less and they might behave a bit
4:30 differently this is especially true for
4:32 clear or see-through resin which is
4:35 really hard to work with in general when
4:37 resin goes up in price you get some
4:40 better properties than the standard
4:43 basic resins but not always when I'm
4:46 looking at resins to recommend I am not
4:49 looking at odor and I'm am not looking
4:53 at V exposure they all smell and smell
4:55 can be very subjective so I'm not going
4:58 to rate it on something like that and
5:01 all of the resin producers VX yes even
5:05 the Eco or plant-based or low or no walk
5:08 they all produce volatile organic
5:11 compounds for colors I'm a basic man I
5:14 like gray I want something where I can
5:17 see the details right out of the printer
5:19 so a lot of colors is sort of out for me
5:22 but that's very much sort of a creative
5:24 thing I need to take images I need to
5:25 take video of my prints if you're going
5:27 to Prime them and paint them it doesn't
5:30 really matter some of the color can be
5:32 easier to get primer on to to coat it
5:36 but it's whatever broadly you can Bunch
5:38 the resin into different types or groups
5:40 you got the basic resin which is low
5:42 viscosity and very brittle then you got
5:45 the tough resin which is kind of
5:48 expensive but also very tough has a high
5:50 viscosity then you have something in
5:53 between sort of a middle point where the
5:54 viscosity is sort of medium and the
5:57 price point is sort of medium ABS is
6:00 actually a term uh we we Alan from fdm
6:02 printing it's a type of filament which
6:05 is extremely confusing because nobody
6:08 really uses ABS that much anymore and it
6:10 has nothing to do with resin but that's
6:12 what we call it then we have these sort
6:15 of detailed Scot resin they are often
6:18 brittle but look quite good but the
6:21 difference between a basic and the
6:25 sculpt or 8K stuff it's extremely minor
6:28 we also have the fast resins which are
6:31 expensive very viscosity and extremely
6:34 brittle and I don't like them we also
6:37 have water washable resin which is sort
6:40 of their own category but not really a
6:43 water wash is often a standard or basic
6:46 resin but it does not have to be at
6:49 least anymore we got abs like water
6:52 washable resin there is quite a big jump
6:54 in price between the standard resin and
6:58 just your average abs like often double
7:00 the price some people that are not
7:02 willing to spend that kind of cash they
7:04 often spring for a popular hack you see
7:07 you can mix different resins which each
7:10 other a normal example is to buy cheap
7:13 bulk standard resin and pour in 5 to 10%
7:16 s Tech tenacious the reason to do this
7:18 is that you lend some properties from
7:20 the tough resin to the basic resin while
7:23 saving a few bucks and a bonus is that
7:25 you can do the Breaking Bad reenactment
7:29 the plan is we cook so the majority of
7:31 your resin is cheap but your models get
7:34 quite a lot more durability for very
7:37 little extra cost you can also do a mix
7:42 of tough with abs like and this one this
7:45 is a very common way to do it oh and if
7:47 you ever find yourself with a little bit
7:49 of resin left over in your tank and you
7:51 have a bottle of resin ah you can't be
7:54 bothered to take the left out you just
7:56 pour the new one in mix them together it
8:00 will work fine but you're exposion time
8:02 might be a bit off but if you're a
8:04 beginner in printing Miniatures I think
8:06 you should look for a resin that just
8:09 works out of the box while this mixing
8:12 can be fun you need to be extra diligent
8:15 when mixing your resin before Printing
8:17 and sometimes you can screw up the mix
8:19 changing the ideal exposure time for the
8:22 model for me at least mixing is not my
8:25 favorite uh I don't think it's ideal for
8:27 beginners what are you actually getting
8:31 when upgrading from basic resin to an
8:33 ABS like resin for almost all of them
8:35 you get a bottle of resin where the
8:37 experience out of the bottle is pretty
8:40 good A model without flimsy parts will
8:43 be able to survive a fall from a table
8:45 not tough but you can handle them
8:47 without breaking at one point I wouldn't
8:50 recommend the elu or any cubic offerings
8:53 of abs like but with the newer versions
8:56 they're coming out with they are fine
8:58 and CR Tech fast is a very common
9:01 recommendation I like it a lot but what
9:03 it seems like is that they're all sort
9:05 of moving closer and closer together in
9:07 terms of properties and value it's
9:09 almost like they all get their resin
9:11 produced from sort of the same few
9:14 factories and maybe the ABS like resins
9:17 are good enough for your use case it is
9:19 often what I use when I just print stuff
9:22 but I'm actually moving away from using
9:24 all of the resins I've just talked about
9:27 so why is that well all of the resins we
9:29 have talked about so far require you to
9:31 clean your leftover liquid resin off the
9:34 model with alcohol or something similar
9:36 and that process is without a doubt the
9:39 biggest drawback to printing in resin so
9:41 if you are really a beginner into
9:43 Printing and you haven't bought the
9:46 recommended strainer jars and a wash
9:49 station I think you should start off
9:51 with something completely different a
9:53 water washable resin but watch out you
9:56 cannot just buy any water wasable resin
9:58 many of them are of the basic standard
10:01 and it's not a good experience they wash
10:02 poorly in water and they are extremely
10:04 brittle so they're not really water
10:06 washable they're just bad resins what
10:08 you get if you find a good water
10:10 washable resin is you get a cleaning
10:12 method that is really great if you want
10:15 to go water wash resin I think you
10:17 should go with the bucket and spray
10:19 method you can learn about it in this
10:22 video and for that method the war gameer
10:25 resin is the only thing I would
10:28 recommend it washes easily with water it
10:31 has durability that is comparable to the
10:34 ABS like resins and the finish of the
10:37 print are pretty nice but my model see a
10:40 lot of transportation and when they
10:43 arrive at the destination sometimes kids
10:46 need to handle them or even worse non
10:48 miniature Gamers at my Dungeons and
10:51 dragon table and I cannot mix this with
10:54 the SAR Tech tenacious because that's
10:56 not water washable and if it did I
10:57 couldn't wash it with water anymore and
11:00 then it would just be whatever so if I
11:02 really need some Miniatures to stand up
11:05 for some tough love and abs like mixed
11:07 with tenacious is the way to go but the
11:10 price increase from basic to abs like wi
11:12 and ases it's a bit higher but that
11:14 price increase ain't nothing than going
11:17 from abs like to printing directly with
11:19 the tough stuff if I'm printing
11:21 something and I need to be dead certain
11:23 it needs to last then I treating myself
11:25 to some
11:29 tgm7 from am merps some say it's magic
11:31 in a bottle and I'm actually one of
11:33 those people it prints with very good
11:36 detail like everything else but the
11:38 flexibility and toughness is just
11:41 extremely great I found it super easy to
11:43 work with you might find that removing
11:46 supports is a bit more work but when the
11:48 model is out of the support it really
11:50 holds up if you go to conventions where
11:53 people print Miniatures for display at
11:55 booth for a game they have made they
11:58 will often use tgm7 and that's for good
12:02 reason I really enjoy using this resin
12:05 but my wallet it ain't enjoying that
12:09 even when buying this in bulk it hurts
12:11 speaking of hurting it can be a pain to
12:13 get started with printing Miniatures
12:15 without some good guidance right now you
