"Atithi" by Rabindranath Tagore explores the life of Tarapada, a free-spirited 15-year-old boy who rejects societal norms and comfort zones in favor of experiencing the world and nature. The story delves into his enigmatic nature as a wanderer and his impact on those he encounters, particularly the zamindar's family.

hello namaskar wam you're watching study
with sudhir your own digital classroom
in this video on popular demand a lot
many of you have been asking for many
days I know we are going to be
discussing explaining atiti by gurudev
Rabat Tor which is part of your ISC
Class 12 prism textbook of English
literature before I get into the story I
would get into what are the themes of
the story so that it's easy for you to
understand put it in context text also
let me tell you this is not going to be
a video which is going to be done in 15
20 minutes I have to do an honest job of
it and that would entail going through
every line and every word not just tell
you a summary there would be other
avenues where you could get the summary
you're free to do that but here on study
with sud I will do a very honest job of
explaining the entire story putting it
in context so that any question you can
answer uh which is asked to from you on
uh in any of your test papers okay so
let's get started the test papers will
be released in the second half of the
academic year uh which will have mcqs
reasoning questions as well as the long
format five and 10 Mark questions and
answers that will be in the second half
of the Academic Year so let's get
started first to understand what the
About okay so the word word atiti
obviously you know means the guest it
was written by gurudev rabid tagor in
1895 and it featured in a short story collection
collection
called go
go go po okay I may be getting the
pronunciation wrong so my Bengali
friends don't get after my life please
correct me what is it but I I'm reading
it as gold pogu I don't really know what
it means anyway what is the story about
that's the important part it is about a
free spirited boy now see one of the
reasons why I'm explaining this in
English is for your own benefit so that
you can use many of the words and
phrases that I use in these notes so
free spirited boy is a phrase that you
should definitely use for the main
character which is
tarapada uh he refuses to be bound by
any of the bound bonds of society so
he's a free spirited means he doesn't
want to be you know he doesn't want to
be in that comfort zone see all of us
like three OT Amir Khan what he did he
didn't want to be in the comfort zone he
always wanted to learn something new
that's precisely what this boy also does
he's 156 years old he kind of
establishes a connection and bond with
Mother Nature and he soaks in different
experiences he learns how to make sweets
how to cut fish uh to sing folk songs to
learn English so he tries to do as many
things as possible um in the time that
he has on Mother Earth he makes friends
easily he's ad at many skills so the
Story begins with arap meeting this
motilal Babu who is a zamindar a
landlord of a village and both motilal
and his wife Anapa like tarapada and
treat him like his son but their
daughter Chu she takes a dislike to him
because she's the only child and many of
you who are only child I mean who are
the only child of your parents would
probably relate to this because you feel
a little envious when your sibling older
or younger has to compete for attention
or the goodies at home right whereas if
you are a single child you are the
sinosure of all attention sinosure if
you are not familiar with this world
which means you are the center of all
attention improve your vocabulary also
here so you are the center of all
right right so if you are like that then
you know if there is someone else
competing for your attention you do not
like it you become envious that's what
charu so the relationship
between Chu and tarapara is one of the
important elements in this particular
story however the relationship also
changes in due course of time when it is
decided that the two of them will get
married but tarapada once again runs out
because he doesn't want to be in that
comfort zone of the uh house or the
village right many of us do that you
know we feel
okay I know this work very well I
created this image just so that you have
an image in your mind it helps you
relate to the story that much
better so many of you when you are in
that kind of a comfort zone you feel
that okay I know this work
well kind of thing that's also because
you're not experimenting with something
else only when you experiment with
something else you will realize that oh
thing is better than this why was it
getting stuck here that's what you
should always do in life always
experiment and try to do different
things every few years because
Rolling Stones gather no Moss this is an
ediom right if you see in a river if
there is a stone which is there at one
place over a period of time Moss but a
stone that keeps rolling through the
river will never gather Moss right so
that's what you need to be that's what
this boy tarapada is really like let me
go through the three broad themes of the
story there are other themes also but
let me go through the three broad themes
the title of course know it means the
guest however at a metaphorical level
and this is what makes a story so
fascinating which is almost written like
a descriptive essay he's also a guest in
the world of domestic life domestic life
to get him married or to stay at home
and do the same things he doesn't want
to be he wants to be in contact with
Mother Nature and he cannot be a regular
inmate in the regular world of domestic
life that's what makes this title so the
title is very significant you should
write an answer on the significance of
the title why is the title so
significant because of these reasons not
just the literal meaning but what is it
exactly meaning in a very metaphorical
sense what are the themes explored in
the story one is the conflict of
wandless what does this mean wandless
means please use this wandless means
some someone who is fond of wandering
all over the place now tararat who is
the protagonist he can kind of you know
represents the struggle between comfort
zone and Adventure if you are in your
comfort zone then you don't want to do
any Adventure however if you are fond of
Adventure then you don't want to be in
your comfort zone you want to do that
thing which will mean it will challenge
you it will make you do things which you
are probably afraid of it will help you
conquer your fears and doubts and
apprehensions I'm talking this even in
general sense in life okay so his
village life you know it kind of
suffocated him it made him feel
claustrophobic whereas outside is the
unknown he doesn't know the unknown he
wants to go and explore the unknown and
that's what is attracting him beckoning
means attracting him because it's
mysterious because it's unknown it is
mysterious so he doesn't wish to feel
trapped inside the comfort zone of his
village and that's what he keeps running
away then there is the Temptation the
Allure of the open road so there is the
Mystic Melody the possibilities of going
out in the open so the story essentially
romanticizes this phrases also you need
to use it romanticizes the idea of
leaving everything behind and exploring
the world and the third big theme which
is the most important is that of the
enigmatic guest so he remains Enigma is
someone who is a bit of a puzzle someone
who cannot be explained so you know you
kind of understand why does he want to
do that why doesn't he want to get
married to charu and live comfortably as
husband and wife why does he want to run
away you would find it difficult but how
do you explain that that's what the
story is going to challenge you to do so
it your interpretation can be different
from my interpretation that's what is
the beauty of literature that you know
it allows for different kind of
interpretations this not maths and
physics answer numerical answer it's not
like that so there will be different
kind of interpretations and that's what
makes tarapada also a very relatable and
a very multifaceted kind of character so
now let's
get into uh the U now let's get into the
story the line by line explanation of
the story now that you have understood
what is it that we are going to talk
about and keep that image in mind
okay okay so now you can see the text on
your screen in some this is from the
collection of a short story so in some
it is written as uh
m m a but in some books like in your
textbook it is written as m o let me
yeah moal Babu okay that's how it is
written please make sure that you also
read this particular box before you get
to the story okay now moal Babu the
zamindar of katalan please remember the
names that have been mentioned they are
typical Bengali names was returning home
with his family by boat one afternoon he
moved the boat now moved the boat means
to secure the boat by fastening it to a
fixed object such like as a dog or an
anchor which you would know from your
geography subject in order to stop it at
one particular place near a Riverside
Market so that their meal could be
prepared so the family is returning uh
home to katalia okay a Brahman boy that
is tarapara came over and asked where
are you going Babu the boy was not more
than 15 or 16 so moal Babu replies as
katalia could you drop me at nandigram
on the way nandigram those from Bengal
would definitely remember it has been in the
the
news associated with uh mam
banerji motilal consented means he
agreed he says what's your name he says
tarapada now the fair skinned boy now
look at the this is the paragraph which
is important because it gives you the
description of the boy and it is
important the fair skinn boy was
beautiful to look at okay because he's
young boy that's why the word beautiful
has been used instead of the using the
word handsome his smile and his large
eyes had the grace of Youth okay he's
two years from adulthood his body bear
except for a stained doti was free of
any access which means he did not have
any flab he was not a plump kind of a
boy as if lovingly carved by a sculptor
so he is a very well sculpted he has a
very well sculpted body or as if in
previous life he had been a young Sage
whose pure religious devotion had
removed all grossness which means there
is nothing crude about his body it was a
very he was a very good-looking boy
horned him means sharpened him to a
gleaming brahmanical Perfection so you
also realize since it has been WR at a
particular time when Brahmin have been
celebrated which is why tagor is writing
in this kind of a tone come and wash
Baba said moal Babu tenderly you can eat
with us now he invites him to eat uh
food with them leave that to me said
tarap and without a moment's hesitation
he joined in the cooking so he now you
realize his first skill that is he knows
how to cook m servant was hindustani
which means he was from North India he
was not very good at cutting up fish
tarapada took over and soon had the dish
ready and had cooked some vegetables too
with practice skill important key phrase
that this is something which means that
he was used to the entire skill set of
cooking he then took a dip in the river
again something which kind of reflects
his brahmanical tradition and opening
his bundle produced a clean white
garment and a small wooden Kum he
sleeped his long hair away from his
forehead and down to his neck adjusted
his glistening sacret thread the Janu
and stepped onto the boat so you realize
this this particular paragraph gives you
an entire idea these two paragraphs
about what his skill sets are moal Babu
invited him into the cabin his wife and
his 9-year-old daughter were there now
you please note down the age of
charu his wife Anapa was tenderly
attracted to the boy when she saw him
and wondered whose child is he where has
he come from how could his mother bear
to abandon him so what you realize is
that a lot of motherly maternal feelings
are there in Anapa for
tarap she plays mats for motilal and the
boy to sit on side by side the boy was
not a big eater so is not like you know
he had a great appetite Anapa felt he
must be shy maybe he's shy that's why
he's not eating much because it's a new
place and try to get him to eat this or
that but when he had finished he could
not be tempted to M he clearly did
everything according to his own wishes
but with such ease that there was
nothing assertive about him he was not
at all shy what does it mean that he
knew how to behave himself now he was
assertive but he did not show his
assertiveness assertive means he had you
know he had a mind on of his own he knew
that this is what I will do but he did
not kind of you know make a thing as if
he was forcing his that no no no I will
do only this he's not saying like that
in a very gentle way he is having he's
doing what he wants to do okay so there
is nothing assertive about him while
he's doing what he wants to do and he
was not at all shy earlier she thought
he was shy but now she realizes that no
he was not a shy kind of a boy when
everyone had eaten anap now it also
shows that you know she allowed him to
see eat with her husband even though he
was a zamindar maybe it could be because
he is a Brahman boy because you please
realize at the time when gurudev wrote
this particular Story cast
discrimination unfortunately was pretty
much a part and parcel of India
especially rural India so uh one reason
why this he she allowed him to eat one
she took a liking to him and to probably
because he was a Brahman it doesn't go
into details but that is the
interpretation that I could think of
when everyone had eaten Anapa sat him
next to her and asked him about his
background where he came from etc etc
she didn't gather much obviously it
shows that he does not reveal much all
she could establish was that the boy had
run away from home of his own volution volution
volution
means volution means his own
wish it was his decision to run away
from home at the age of seven or eight
which means that for the last 8 to n
years he was on the road he was in the
lap of Mother Nature he had not gone
home isn't your mother alive so she
assumes that her his mother may have
been dead she is doesn't she love you
now tarap finds this question very
peculiar why shouldn't she love me he
said laughing then why did you leave her
because Anapa assumes that only if his
circumstances at home were not good only
then he would leave home and be on the
road in the open world for the last 8 to
age she has four more sons and three
daughters which means he has seven
siblings pained by this very odd reply
Anapa said what a thing to say just
because I have five fingers does it mean
that I want to chop off
one she's using a comparison tarap was
young so his life story was brief he
didn't have much to say but the boy was
a complete original which means you
wouldn't have found or at least Anapa
had never met anyone like tarap he was
his parents fourth son and was still a
baby when his father passed away despite
there being so many in the house tarap
was the darling of all obviously he was
very popular in the entire extended
family mothers brothers sisters and
Neighbors doed on him they all liked him
so much so that his tutor never beat him
everyone would have been appalled if he
did appalled means everyone would have
been shocked if he did so he was
obviously good at studies there is no
reason for him to leave that is leave
home half stared boys who constantly
stole fruit from trees and were thrashed
by the owners of the trees they never
stayed from the village or their
scolding mothers that is children who
are naughty and who did things like you
know stealing fruit from trees and
thereby getting beaten up by the owners
of those trees even they did not Escape
or run away from the village right but
this person who was actually loved by
everyone he joined a touring J yatra
troop okay and he um I mean in your book
it is written as jatra okay uh jatra is
a group of folk singers and left his
village without a thought so look at the
irony he actually like he was doted upon
by everyone everybody liked him but but
yet he he he felt probably a little
claustrophobic with so much of attention
on him all the time search parties went
out which means everybody searched for
him missing person and he was brought
back from the jatra TR his mother
pressed him to her breast and drenched
him with tears his sisters wept too his
elder brother tried to perform his duty
as guardian but he soon abandoned his
feeble attempts for some time he tried
to advise him that this is not something
you should have done but then he gave
up uh and welcomed him with open arms
women invited him to their houses plied
him with even greater they became even
more affectionate even more loving
towards tarapada but he would not accept
TI this is an extremely important Line
This is the Crux of the story he did not
want to get tied up with any kind of
permanent relationship okay even ties of
love his Stars had made him a Wanderer
this is the most important line of the
story okay if he saw strange ports you
know his stars as of his Destiny his
fate had made him a Wanderer okay who
would keep wandering all over the place
if he saw strange boats on the river or
a sasi From A Distant region under the
local people tree or if Gypsy sacked by
the river making mats of or wicker baskets
okay U Vier is the thing you know almost
like a bamboo kind of a material which
with which you will make those kind of
basket okay his heart would stir with
longing to be free he wanted to go out
again because he wanted to know more and
more the Curiosity to know much more
about this world attracted tarapada very
much and after he had run away two or
three times family and villagers gave up
hope of him that means after two three
times the fourth time they did not even
make an attempt to search for him to get
him back because they realized that even
after you get him back this boy is going
to run away again again he joined the
jatra troop at first but when the master
of the troop began to treat him almost
as a son and the members of The Troop
young or old had fallen for him which
means they all liked him and he tried to
treat him like a
son relationship this fell does not like
it so he has a claustrophobia he has an aversion
aversion
please write this he has an aversion to
to
relationships he wants to learn but he
doesn't want to get tied up with
relationships and even the people in the
houses where they performed especially
the women began to make a special fuss
of him one day without saying a word he
disappeared and could not be found so
from there also he disappeared whenever
special first means again they started
doting on him kind of you know
paying a lot of attention to him
tarapada was as very of ties as a young
fawn fawn means Jo the small one the
young one of a deer very means he was
very apprehensive he didn't like
it and was also like a deer in his love
of music so the comparison to deer that
is he was very of TI as a young Fawn Eon
is a little weary of ties and is also
like a deer in the love of Music it
enjoys music the songs of the jatra was
were what had first lured him away from
home Melody sent a trembling through his
veins and rhythms made his body swing so
he learned to dance because he had a
special connection with Music Folk Music
even as a baby he had shown such solemn
grownup attention at musical Gatherings
that even as a child he had an ear for
music and he would dance and he would
take a special liking to music sitting
and swaying and forgetting himself that
his Elders could hardly restrain their
Amusement so they would feel very amused
at the fact that he kind of seemed to
enjoy music so much not only music when
the Reigns of svan Shan uh the season
fell on the thick leaves when the clouds
thundered when the winds moaned in the
woods what I had written in the theme
points like a motherless demon child so
this is the use of metaphors he's kind
of put an imagery tagor about how it
would be during the rainy season in that
part of
Bengal that when the clouds thundered
when the wind moaned moan means it's
almost like acoustic imagery that he has
created sound imagery in the wounds like
Woods like a motherless demon child his
heart was swept away so he had you know
something unusual he would kind of get
attracted by it the call of nature the
call of a kite high in the sky in the
still heat of noon kite as in like a
hawk or an eagle the croaking of frogs
on rainy evening so look at the
descriptive nature of this particular
Story by rabindra tagor the howling of
jacals at night all entranced him
impelled by this passion for music
impelled means that attracted by this
passion for music it was not long before
he joined a group of panchali which
which is the ballots of gods and uh
singers gods and singers uh uh Gods and
Goddesses sorry um the leader of the
group carefully taught him songs and
trained him to recite the um panchali by
heart he too began to love him as his
own like a pet cage bird tarapara
learned a few songs and then one morning
flew away the moment you realize he said
he too began to love him as one of his
own the moment anyone gets too
emotionally attached to tarapara he is
not comfortable with that kind of a
relationship that kind of an equation
and he decides to escape finally he
joined a troop of gymnast
from jar to assar a fair tour the
district yatra troops panchali singers
Barts dancers and stall holders travel
by board from one side to another for
the second year running this tour round
of entertainment included a small
gymnastic troop from Kolkata at first
tarar joined the stall holders sold paan
at the fair so you see even he is not
shy of doing this kind of small minial
Works selling paan at the fair but then
his Natural Curiosity Drew him to this
wonderful skill of the gymnast and he
joined the their troop so he decides to
learn the skill set of gymnastics he had
taught him taught himself to play the
flute very well during the gymnastic
display he had to play lakau tumri at
top speed on the flute this was his only
task so he became part of the gymnastics
troop it was from this troop when he met
moal Babu that he had most recently
abonded he had learned that the zamas at
nandigram had founded on a larish scale
and amature jatra group so he tied up
his BND and headed for the place meeting
motilal Babu on the way despite these
connections with various groups his
nature had not been corrupted by any he
had not picked up any bad habits which
means not corrupted means he had not
picked up any bad habits he was deep
down entirely detached and free this is
an very important key phrase the foul
language he had heard the Dreadful SES
he had seen had not fixed themselves in
mind he had not picked up any
four-letter words he was not used to
abuse in if he had seen something very
bad it did not kind of make an imprint
on his mind his mind was pure only
absorbing the good things that he wanted
to learn from different people they
passed him by he remained Unbound by any
kind of habit or custom no bad habit he
swam in the murky Waters of the world
with pure white wings like a swan okay
so this is an important comparison like
a swan a swan is what a swan is a very
great a full
full
bird however many times his curiosity
made him dive in his wings could not be
soaked or soiled so even when he got
curious and ended up seeing something
undesirable his wings did not get soaked
of soil means he was not corrupted in
any way there was a pure and natural
innocence in this runaway boy's
expression so much so that the worldly
wise motilal Babu invited him in without
doubt or question and with great Den so
Mo Babu observed all these aspects in
tarapada and he decided to invite him to
travel with him uh wherever he wanted to
go to nandigram so he kind of invited
him to travel with him to
nandigram okay now let's come to part
two the story I think is published in
part five parts in the afternoon the
boat set
sail in the afternoon the boat set SE
Anapa continued to ask the boy kind
questions about his home and family he answered
laconically what does it mean it means
using few words so he is not someone who
kind of speaks too much and then went
out on Deck to escape because he did not
want to be subjected to more and more
questions from Anapa the monsoon River
swollen to the maximum fullness which
means it was the monsoon season so as a
result of which the river was absolutely
full when it's a full River you
generally use this phrase swollen River
seem to Harry the Earth with Reckless
turbulence in the sense that you know
you kind of are on the earth with a lot
of turbulence there's a lot of
turbulence the waves are there so it's
not a very calm kind of river in the
cloudless sunshine the half sunk reads
along the bank the fields of succulent
sugar can that is full of sugar and the
far of Bluey Green Woods kissing the
Horizon so you see the descriptive
nature of this particular story that
he's talking about the scenery that he's
seeing so it is something which is
observing Mother Nature At Close
Quarters seem transformed by the touch
of a golden wand into new
Beauty you're talking about the how the
sunshine is affecting the nature around
that place as they're traveling on the
board the speechless the speechless Sky
gazed down in Wonder everything was
alive throbbing a washed with confident
light shiny with newness bursting with
plenty so it's basically describing the
absolute beautiful site that he was
seeing while he was going on that boat
tarapara took refuge on the uh tarapara
took refuge on the roof of the boat in
the shade of the sail sloping pastures
flooded Jude Fields green Rippling late
Autumn Patty narrow paths leading from
the guards and Villages shaded by
encircling foliage foliage as in the
vegetation so he kind of decided took
Refuge means he decided to rest there on
the roof of the boat in the shade of the
sail the sail as in this is the boat and
this is the
sail so you will have a bigger boat
water Earth and Sky this movement of
life and sound this varied levels and
vast Vistas to this huge immovable mute
unblinking natural world so he's used a
whole lot of adjectives out there this
was the old style of writing the boy was
intimately linked yet Not For a Moment
did it try to hold him with its loving
Embrace so you see all this mother
nature is there Mother Nature does not
establish a hold on tarap human beings
do and he's uncomfortable with the
relationships that human beings try to
impose on him whereas he's perfectly all
right with Mother Nature that he just
sees learns from but it does not try to
impose herself on tarapada CS running on
the banks with Tails upraised ponies
grazing and hopping about with hobble
legs king fisher swooping down from
fishing net poles to plop into the water
to catch fish king fisher as in the bird
boys splashing women shly chatting as
they stood chesty floating their saris
out in front to rub them clean fish
wives with baskets s tucked up buying
fish from the fishermen all of this
tarap washed with unflagging which means
his curiosity did not go down did not
reduce he had a lot of curiosity to see
all these sides as he was going on the
boat never were his eyes sated means it
did not you know his eyes were
not fed up with seeing so much as he sat
talking as he sat he soon got talking
with the Hensen and hemen some I mean
the people who would be rowing the boat
sometimes he took the lagi which is one
himself punted the boat means to propel
by pushing a pole against the bottom of
the lake or the river in this particular
case when the hemman needed a smoke he
would take the tiller when this sail
needed to be turned he helped skillfully
let me just check with the original
thing but there's a difference in this particular
particular
minute no more
thought just before dusk
Anapa called tarap and ask what do you
like to eat at night whatever I get I
don't eat every day so he's not someone
as we have already known that he doesn't
eat much she felt disturbed by this
beautiful Brahman Bo indifference to her
Hospitality because she thought that he
would also reciprocate the affection
that she's showing for for him but he
seems to be rather a little cut off you
know a little you know he doesn't want
to establish get very close to her she
long to feed cloth and give sucker to
him means to kind of take care of him um
but she could not discover how to please
him she ostentatiously sent her servants
to buy milk and sweets that is she
thought if she feeds him more and takes
care of more which is something which he
does not like but she is not aware of
that so ostentatiously means that you
know take care of with all the different
kinds of things but by milk and sweets
tarap ate the sweets willingly enough
but would not touch the milk even the
Tak turn matilal urged
him to drink it but he simply replied I
don't like it purn means someone who is
reserved in speech that is does not speak
speak
much three days passed tarap expertly
joined in everything from the cooking
and shopping to the sailing of the boat
they're still on the boat they have not
reached their destination anything he
saw interested him any work that he did
absorbed him his sight his hands and his
mind were ever active like nature
herself he was always Serene and
detached yet always busy so he would
always absorb him in some work or the
other no work you know this work I won't
do he will never say that he would
always take to any kind of activity
people always dwell in a fixed place but
tarap was like a joyous wave On Life's
unending stream that is he was just
going along with life he was not fixed
you know I will do only this so he was
kind of willing to experiment with
anything and everything past or future
meant nothing moving forward was the
only thing that mattered that he was not
fixated about his past or his
future he was kind of you know
interested in just learning new things
and doing different kinds of activities
by mixing with various groups he had
learned all sorts of delightful
accomplishments so he was a very
accomplished person mainly because at a
very young age he had mixed with
different kinds of people so he had
different kinds of experiences and from
each one of them like a sponge he had
imbibed lots of things things were
stamped on his mind with astonishing
ease unclouded as it was by any kind of
worry you know he had learned all this
so they were like a stamp on his mind he
knew panchali folktales Kiran and long
pieces from yatras jatras moal Babu
habitually read the ram to his wife and
daughter one evening he had just got to
tell the story of kush and love when
tarapara unable to control himself
unable to restrain himself came down
from the roof of the boat and said put
the book away I know a song about kushan
love listen he began a panchali dashu
swiftly okay
okay
book that's said this is the original
book this thing so there may be some
words which is okay you can go by your
book The hemman and Heman came and
peered through the door of the cabin as
thus fell a stream of laughter p and
music spread through the evening air the
banks became alert and people in passing
boards were lured for a moment and
strained because that means what that he
was extremely melodious and gifted in
the way he was singing that particular
song on love and Kush when the panchali had
had
uh yeah when the panchali had finished
everyone sighed deeply wishing that it
would last forever they did not want the
song to end it was so beautiful the
tearful anap
take the boy and press him to her breast
and bury her face in her in his ear
exactly the same phrase he has used
which he had used earlier for Tara's
mother the first time that he had been
brought back moal Babu thought if I
could somehow keep this boy he would
make up for my having no son the little
girl chush Rashi however was full of
envy and jealousy okay these are
synonyms but he has used them
twice she was her parents only child
sole claimant on their affection that is
only she wanted to get their affection
and she did not want that love and
affection to be shared with anyone else
there was no end to her willfulness and
obstinacy she had her own opinions
obstinacy means Hut you know very
stubborn um willful means wanting to do
whatever she wanted to do she had her
own opinions about food clothes and
hairstyles but there was no consistency
in them so she liked to keep
experimenting and do different kinds of
things whenever she was invited out her
mother was terrified that she would make
impossible demands over dress so she was
a very demanding kind of person
especially when it came to clothes if
her hairstyle displeased her to do and
redo it made no difference and merely
led to a tantrum so she was a spoiled
child that's what you realized she was
like everything she was like this with
everything but if she was in a good mood
she was amable to anything that she
would agree to anything and would show
excessive love for her mother hugging
her kissing her laughing in an
unbalanced way the girl was a
puzzle but now her volatile feelings
began to concentrate in Fierce animosity
animosity means her
dislike okay for tarapara and she caused
exceptional trouble to her parents
because they want to wanted to almost
like take him in adoption as their son
but she did not like it because she was
feeling very envious and very jealous at
meal she scowled you know made a face
and you know very unpleasant kind of an
expression and pushed her plate away she
would complain about the cooking slap
the maid and object to everything
because she wanted to throw a tantrum to
make herself feel important because she
realized that he was getting a lot more
of the attention so she wanted to draw
the attention to herself reminds me of a
student of
mine the more that Tara's
accomplishments impressed her and others
the more Angry she became she would not
admit that she he had any he would say
that he has no virtues okay undeniable
evidence of them made her even more iCal
that if somebody says that no look he
sings so well she would become even more
critical of his singing on the night the
tarapara sang about love and Kush Anapa
thought wild animals can be tained by
music so perhaps my daughter will soften
so that's what Anapa thought that you
know maybe my daughter will also change
how did you like it charu she asked she
gave no answer merely tossed her head
implying I did not like it at all and
shall never like it okay now realizing
that charu was jealous her mother
stopped showing affection for tarapara
so the Anapa is a little sharp she
realizes that if I show affection to
this boy my daughter is not liking it so
it's better that I don't show affection
for him in her
presence after dark when Chu had gone to
bed after eating early Anapa would sit
by the door of the cabin and they're
still on the board mind you Mo Babu and
tarapara would sit outside at Anna's
request tarapara would sing with this
singing the goddess of sleeping darkened
homes on the bank would sink into a TR
so the two Banks they could also hear
the villages could also vage could also
hear the song being sung from the
boat and anap pun's heart swelled with
love and appreciation do you remember
that song of course it's much much
before your
times um Amar PR the
song actually I mean supposed to be have
shot on the hugi but I know there are
some cheating done with
it kishor Kumar
d d d anyway so um with this singing the
goddess of sleeping darkened homes on
the bank would sink into a trance that
is they would be completely mesmerized
by the quality of his singing and anap
paa's heart swelled with love and
appreciation she felt much more love for
boy for the boy because of his singing
but charu would get up and shout
tearfully and angrily mother I can't get
to sleep with this noise so referring to
the song the music as noise which can be
so very insulting she found it quite
unbearable to be sent to bed on her own
while her parents sat and listened to
tarap singing so she was essentially she
disliked the fact that she was not the
sole claimant on their affection anymore
so this is an important question which
you would get for a five mark question
for sure and as a 10 mark on the
relationship between tarapada and Chu
Shashi please prepare it using these
kind of instances and keywords the
natural fierceness of this fiery
blackeyed girl fascinated tarap now he
found it quite fascinating the way she
reacted okay that she was very very
Fierce and
wild he would tell her stories sing her
songs play her the flute made great
efforts to win her around becomes become
friends with her but with no success at
all not that see this is an interesting
thing he did not like when people showed
too much of attention so he's very very
intrigued by this girl who is not giving
him the attention she's actually
reacting in completely the opposite way
so he tries to kind of win her over only
in the afternoons when he bathed in the
swollen River that is the river which
was full sporting his fair pure body in
a swimming display worthy of a young
water God please use this keyword it's
an interesting keyword only then she
could not help being attracted just a
little bit because she was of course
much younger than her just 9 years old
but she was attracted towards him she
would watch him then but she did not
reveal her interest to anyone and born
actress that she was so she was good at
hiding her feelings carried on knitting
a Wen scarf with apparent indifference
to Tara's water sport so she behaved as
though she did not care for what he did
his his skill in swimming in that kind
of manner and she kind of behaved as
though she just couldn't care any less
harap took no not notice of nandigram
when they passed it now this is again
interesting just like Anapa and moal
Babu also want him to be at their home
and take care of him as their son even
tarapara does not show any interest to
get off at nandigram which was his
original idea uh and decides to continue
on the journey so he took no notice of
nandigram when they passed by nandigram
the large boat sometimes with it sales
up sometimes toed proceeded slowly on
down rivers and tributaries and the of
the passengers to float with a soft and
easy pace through the peace and beauty
of the scene so it is obviously taking a
long time no one was in any kind of
hurry long afternoons were spent bathing
and eating and as soon as dusk fell the
boat was moved at a village guard by
trees busing with crickets and a glow
with fireflies so this was like the
routine on many days after about 10 days
so this is about the time that it takes
for them to get to their particular
Village which is at Catalia ponies and a
palanquin palanquin is you know if you
uh so one person here and one person
here holds it by the shoulder and the
person mostly women would sit inside and
would be carried so that they don't have
to walk so this is how it was done in
those times in India especially rural
India a god of Honor so a palanquin was
sent from the house to receive the zamas
a guard of Honor with bamboo lotties
fired rounds of blanks rusly uh I don't
think I'm pronouncing it correctly eoe
by The Village cross this this
essentially means to create a loud noise
meanwhile tarapada slipped off the boat
please check the pronunciation I don't
think I have said it very correctly
meanwhile tarapada slipped off the boat
and quickly looked around the
village calling one now he's making new
friends because he wants to learn new
things because this is another new kind
of experience for him one villager as
Dada another as Kura Kura means an uncle
another Dei and another masi he
established friendly relations with
everyone in a couple of hours because he
had no normal ties he could get to know
people with amazing ease and speed
within a few days he had one all heart
so pretty much similar kind of
experience he mixed with everyone on
equal terms he was unconventional yet
able to adapt to any situation or work
with boys he was a boy yet somehow
separate and special he was he behaved
like a boy with boys of his age but it
was very obvious that he was a little
better than them with older people he
was not a boy yet not so precocious
either precocious means having abilities
at a very young age okay with herders he
was a herder that is for goats and sheep
yet also a Brahman he joined in with
things as if used to them all his life
he would be chatting in the Sweet Shop
the sweet maker would say could you
could you mind the shop for a while
means could you mind means could you
take care of the shop for a while I
shall not be long means I will come very
soon cool as a cucumber okay that is he
was a very cool cat no problem I will
take care tarap sat there keeping the
Flies of the sesh and with a Sal Leaf
sesh as you know is a sweet he could not
Bengali sweet he could even
make he could even make sweets himself
knew something of weaving and was not
himself ignorant of how to turn a Potter
wheel so this Talent also he had tarap
reigned over the entire Village reigned
means not as in ruled ruled over the
hearts which means he won over
everyone's Hearts everyone was extremely
fond of him there was just one young
girl whose hatred he simply could not
overcome that is charu perhaps it was
because this girl so fiercely wished him
to leave that he stayed on for so long
otherwise he would have left because
other whenever people are very fond of
him we know it for a fact that he leaves
but the reason and this could come as a
reasoning question the reason why he
does not leave this time is
because it was because of this girl uh
whose hatred he could not overcome but Chu
Chu
Shashi now proved how hard it is to
Fathom even a juvenile female mind so
he's making a slightly sexist kind of a
comment that even the mind of a juvenile
Fe female mind is something which cannot
be easily understood now comes the
second character the second female
character apart I mean if you're not
talking about Anapa chush Shashi and one
more girl called Sona money now this
person's daughter Sona money had been
widowed at the age of five now this is
very important that he is making a
comment on
child marriage because somebody this
girl had got married at the age early
and had been widowed at the age of five
she was charu's PLM so she's much
younger Chu is nine isn't that the case
Chu is nine right I keep getting this small
details one minute one minute is 9 years
I remember seeing n keep forgetting
should not get it wrong
correct okay Cho so
uh yeah so she was nine this girl was
five oh no sorry uh it's possible that
she's not five anymore she had been
widowed at the age of five so she's
probably at the same age we'll find that
out she had been ill for a while and had
not been able to go out to see her
friend when she was recovered and came
to see her again a rift between them
came about almost for no reason Chu had
been speaking so they had they had a
coral charu had been speaking at length
about tarup she hoped by saying what a
precious asset he was to astonish and
intriguer so while she does not like him
when he's not around she says nice
things about tarapada to her friend to
show what not because she's very fond of
tarapada but to say that you know she
knows someone who is so good so by
extension she wants to feel good you
realize the temperament the mind of chu
but when she discovered he was known to
sonani already that she called bamun
takun masi and that Sonam called him
Dada when she heard that he not only
treated mother and daughter to Kean
tunes on his flute but had at sonam's
request made her a bamboo flute that he
picked her fruits he had picked her
fruits from high branches and flowers
from Thor thy trees so you had done all
these for sonami and her mother when she
heard all this DTS of fire stabbed her
DTS of fire means she got extremely
angry and envious she had thought of
tarap as their tarap he he belongs to
their family how could another family
also get to know him and interact with
him so closely that was her
problem so that ordinary people that and
this was you know guarded closely that
he was their guest their atiti okay and
he was belonged to them so that ordinary
people might Glimpse him yet never be
able to grasp him you know that for them
he should just be someone they know but
not someone they would be knowing very
closely they would admire his Beauty and
talent from a distance and Chu shashi's
family would gain Glory thereby so they
want she wanted reflected Glory she
wanted to please use this phrase she
Glory why would Sonam have such easy
contact with this singular divinely
favored Brahman boy okay divinely
favored means someone who had lot of
talent if Chu's family had not taken him
in had not looked after him how would
sonamoni ever have seen him so you see
it's a very young child's mind sonam's
Dada indeed she burned all over at the
thought she didn't like it why was the
charu who had tried to strike the boy
down with arrows of hatred so Ang
anxious to claim so rights over him so
tagor is asking this question and he
says understand this who will okay
please try to understand this I don't
understand this that's what Tor is
trying to say you know it's it's an
author's comment out here this paragraph
is like an author's comment he's saying
I don't understand she was full of
hatred but why should why should she be
so Keen to claim Soul rights over him
that only he belongs to only our family
the three of us no one else I don't
understand it if you understand it please
please
do later that day and that is something
which we need to understand and try to
reason it out later that day and as I
have said you know because she had that
thing that she wanted to bask in his
reflected Glory but she did not want to
share so she was kind of you know
envious of the fact that she did not get
singular attention but at the same time
when he was known to everyone else she
did not know so by Nature she was a very
jealous and let's say a very insecure
kind of person later that day Chu had a
serious RI of sonamoni over another
trivial matter so you realize that many
trivial matters she seems to have a
dispute with sonamoni she marched into
Tara's room found his beloved flute and
callously callously means very
irresponsible manner jumped and stamped
on it break it she was still doing it
when tarapada came in he was amazed by
the image of Destruction that the girl
presented how could someone break a
flute like that charu why are is
smashing my flute he asked I want to
smash it I am going to smash it shouted
charu with red eyes and flushed face her
face is all gone red that's why it's
called flushed face damping
unnecessarily on the already smashed
flute she burst into loud sobs oh God I
can relate so much to someone I
know and ran from the room tarap picked
up the pieces turned them this way and
that but it was useless she had
completely broken it to to wreak
destruction that is to kind of destroy
it on his old innocent
flute was so idiotic was so absurd and
silly that he burst out laughing you
know he did not get angry but he felt
amused and he burst out laughing chush
Shashi intrigued him means you know her
behavior surprised him even more every
day he was also very intrigued and taken
in by the English Illustrated books in
moal babu's library tarapada had
considerable knowledge of the world but
he could not enter the world of these
pictures at all because he did not know
the language he tried to do so in
imagination but found no satisfaction in
this seeing his interest in these books
motilal said one day would you like to
learn English so you realize he's much
more generous and indulgent you will
understand these pictures then if you
are able to read I would like to learn
it because you know that he likes to be
like a sponge trying to learn as much
from any possible Source moal Babu
happily engaged the Headmaster of the
village secondary School Ram ratan Babu
to teach the boy English every
evening this has six parts not five
parts tarap set about learning English
with great concentration and retention
that he also retaining what he was
learning it released him into a hitherto
inacessible realm because it kind of
allowed him to read much more and learn
much more about the world unconnected
with the former World which is mostly
about Bengali the local people saw no
more of him now the locals not see much
more of him because at dusk when he went
to the empty Riverside to pay swiftly up
and down reciting his lessons his boyish
devotes devotes means who looked up to
him because they realized that he's
better than us so they all became
devoted to him mournfully watched you
know because he would be busy with
himself mournfully means because he's
not they would be sad mournfully means
they would be sad that he's no longer
interacting or playing with him with
them they dared not disturb his studies
Chu did not see much of his now formerly
tarapada ate in the women's quarters
under anap paa's loving gaze but because
this could take a long time he asked
motilal Babu to arrange for him to eat
outside then Anapa was hurt by this
because of the change in his uh food okay
um but motilal was very pleased by
Tara's keenness to learn that he agreed
Arrangement now insisted that she too
wanted to learn English at first her
parents were OSI AR Baba or as they say
in Bengali Ur Baba that you know now she
also wants to do what he's doing she
also wants to copy the same at first her
parents were amused by their Bard Bard
means that very know uh Reckless
Behavior kind of
person lovingly laughed at it but it's
absurdity absurdity means silliness was
soon washed away by Tears she started
crying that you know I want to learn
English doting parents doting means
affectionate parents you know indulgent
parents that they were they were forced
to give in and she started to study
alongside tarapada with the same cuor
that ramatan Babu study however was
alien to her Restless nature now she was
not used to learning she was very
restless she was doing it only because
he was doing it and she wanted to not be
second to anyone she wanted to do
whatever he was getting to do okay she
fell far behind she couldn't learn
anything by heart couldn't bear to be
behind so she could not learn but she
was very jealous that she was not able
to do the same what tarapada was able to
do if tarapada overtook her and moved on
to a new lesson she was Furious and
burst into tears when he finished an old
book and bought a new one she had to buy
the new book too in his spare time he
would sit in his room learning and
writing his lessons because he was
obviously a very diligent kind of a
student very serious kind of a student
very honest kind of a student the
jealous girl could not stand this she
would secretly come and pour ink on his
exercise book steal his pen even tear
from the book The Passage that he had
been said to
learn excise homework she would tear the
page tarap bore with this means he
tolerated this bore most of this with
Amusement bore means here it means that
he tolerated all this because he was
amused if she went too far he slapped
her but he was quite unable to control
her he was not able to control her kind
of this kind of wavered kind of behavior
a chance occurrence saved him one day
truly annoyed he tore up his ink spilled
exercise book and sat gloomy because she
had poured in excise book so he tore it
and he kind of felt very sad Chu came to
the door and prepared him herself for a
beating she knew that he would give her
a slap but nothing happened tarapada
went on sitting in silence so he tried a
different style of dealing with her
deliberately or not deliberately the
girl went in and out of the room several
times she came so so close that tarapara
could if he had wished easily have
twacked her on her back twacked her
means given her a slap but he did not do
that and remained solemn means he
remained very serious the girl was in a
quandy quandy means she was confused
okay why is he not behaving the way she
expected him to behave how to ask for
forgiveness was something she had never
learned she did not know how to say
sorry yet she was extremely anxious for
forgiveness so you realize that she
wants attention she wanted attention she
was behaving rudely with her with him to
get her get his
attention it's like on
YouTube there are some people who in
order to draw your attention and I've
seen this quite often they would write
the most rude way because they want to
make you react and over a period of time
I have realized this don't give them the
attention that will be the end of it
that's something which I have learned
over a period of time
finally seeing no other way she took a
piece of the TA exercise book like
that's what I mean I remember last year
there are a few students who wrote
extremely rude
stuff and I did not dignify them with
the response I did just kept quiet
because they would think that if you
write rude stuff you know it would get
under my skin my thing is that I go
silent I choose silence as my weapon I
do not react because I do not as a
matter of policy I do not believe in
phys physical violence of course I don't
believe in verbal violence also so when
you do not believe in violence of any
kind it's the best policy because then
you are telling that person that you are
not worthy of my response that is even
that is a even bigger insult than shout
and scream at the person or reply in the
same kind either I will reply with
silence I mean not reply at all or I
will reply with some kind of fun kind of
a response which which also would be
mocking the person that you try to be
rude to me it does not affect me that's what I want to
say I always tell to students and I want students to know this you know before
students to know this you know before you write something rude or abuse
you write something rude or abuse someone like me think about how would
someone like me think about how would you feel if someone said that to your
you feel if someone said that to your father or your brother or your mother or
father or your brother or your mother or your sister or your uncle how would you
your sister or your uncle how would you feel as simple as that one of the
feel as simple as that one of the reasons and I've said this in one of my
reasons and I've said this in one of my earlier videos one of the reasons why I
earlier videos one of the reasons why I decided against doing U any courses was
decided against doing U any courses was that you know I was you know that whole
that you know I was you know that whole attitude of students you know
attitude of students you know ke giv you, rupees I've given you 12200
ke giv you, rupees I've given you 12200 rupees I've given you 1300 rupees now
rupees I've given you 1300 rupees now you Jolly will are like my slave you
you Jolly will are like my slave you need to I will say this even if you have
need to I will say this even if you have written the answer to this if I ask this
written the answer to this if I ask this you need to write the answer again you
you need to write the answer again you are my slave because I have paid you
are my slave because I have paid you this 12200 rupees for an entire year of
this 12200 rupees for an entire year of 12 months 100 rupees per month sorry to
12 months 100 rupees per month sorry to say I do not dignify you with that kind
say I do not dignify you with that kind of an importance that I would do that
of an importance that I would do that which is why I've decided no more
which is why I've decided no more courses I will do these videos with the
courses I will do these videos with the same kind of honesty but some of the
same kind of honesty but some of the things that students like you have said
things that students like you have said to me last year have hurt me and trust
to me last year have hurt me and trust me and trust me to all those students
me and trust me to all those students who did that the loss is yours because
who did that the loss is yours because because the kind of notes and the kind
because the kind of notes and the kind of content that I create and
of content that I create and give no teacher can match that because I
give no teacher can match that because I do it with a lot of honesty and lot of
do it with a lot of honesty and lot of sincerity the loss is yours because some
sincerity the loss is yours because some of you think and this includes some of
of you think and this includes some of you who were part of my 11th class batch
you who were part of my 11th class batch also the last year's 12th class batch
also the last year's 12th class batch the last year 11th class batch the last
the last year 11th class batch the last year's 10th class batch I mean the batch
year's 10th class batch I mean the batch of
of 2024 very sadly was
2024 very sadly was disappointing and
anyway let's leave it I don't want to get into any kind of negative I like to
get into any kind of negative I like to keep myself positive so I all I say is
keep myself positive so I all I say is that the loss is yours because I do not
that the loss is yours because I do not you know that whole thing I would have
you know that whole thing I would have done things very honestly but you
done things very honestly but you believe that you know let's get smart
believe that you know let's get smart with this guy too bad I don't I have too
with this guy too bad I don't I have too much of self-respect and self-dignity to
much of self-respect and self-dignity to subject myself to that kind of
