0:02 what will happen in the prologue to The
0:04 Winds of Winter George Ora Martin has
0:07 given us a couple of Clues so let's make
0:09 some educated guesses hi everyone this
0:12 is Robert welcome to indeep geek on this
0:14 channel we cover A Song of Ice and Fire
0:16 In Depth as well as the Lord of the
0:19 Rings and The Witcher if you're new here
0:22 welcome what will happen in the prologue
0:24 to The Winds of Winter George ARA Martin
0:26 has confirmed that like the other five
0:28 books in the series so far there will be
0:31 a prologue but but what will it be about
0:34 well so far georgea Martin has used the
0:36 prologues in A Song of Ice and Fire in a
0:38 very clear and almost predictable way
0:40 they are roughly in the right
0:41 chronological order with the rest of the
0:44 book so no flashbacks to many years
0:46 earlier or anything like that they are
0:48 written in the same style a single
0:50 person point of view and the point of
0:52 view used is that of a relatively minor
0:54 character in the story as a one-off not
0:56 one of the other main PV characters like
1:00 John Tyrion or Danny and so far that POV
1:02 character has always died at the end of
1:05 or immediately after their chapter there
1:07 has also always been a magical element
1:09 involved in the chapter and in
1:12 particular related to that death and
1:15 finally though probably most importantly
1:17 each prologue plays an important
1:19 thematic role to that book introducing
1:21 Concepts or plot threads that will
1:24 become important later and often clearly
1:26 mirroring something that will happen at
1:28 the very end of the book so to quickly
1:31 run down what we've had so far for a
1:33 Game of Thrones book one the prologue
1:36 was from the POV of will a member of the
1:38 knight's watch who along with wayar Roy
1:41 and gared runs into the others this
1:43 clearly introduces the reality of the
1:45 others and mirrors the introduction of
1:47 the dragons in the last chapter of the
1:49 book for a Clash of Kings we have maesta
1:52 creson at Dragonstone so we get that
1:54 whole Stannis and melisandra plotline
1:56 introduced the buildup to the battle of
1:59 the Blackwater and Mr Cron's death is
2:01 echoed in the last chapter of the book
2:02 with the death of maester
2:06 leuin A Storm of Swords has chat this
2:08 prologue features the others again and
2:10 sets in motion the chain of events that
2:12 leads at the end of the book to Jon Snow
2:14 becoming Lord commander of the Night's
2:17 Watch Pate is the POV character For A
2:20 Feast for Crows and Echoes very clearly
2:22 with the Sam chapter at the end of the
2:25 book and vamir six skins is the POV for
2:28 the A Dance with Dragons prologue we
2:30 learn a lot about skin changing the that
2:32 helps explain what probably happens with
2:34 John at the end of that book so that's
2:37 what we've had so far but what about the
2:41 Winds of Winter well back in 2014 a few
2:43 months after the end of season 4 of the
2:46 TV show and the Red Wedding Georgia
2:48 Martin teased that although on the show
2:51 Rob's wife was dead in the books she and
2:55 I quote is still alive and will be seen
2:57 in the prologue of the Winds of
3:00 Winter some parts of the random then
3:02 speculated that perhaps this meant it
3:05 would be a chapter from her POV and so
3:07 she would therefore die because that's
3:09 what happens to BV characters in A Song
3:11 of Ice and Fire prologues which prompted
3:13 Georg Martin to clarify in a later
3:17 interview let me make this clear here I
3:19 didn't say she was the Viewpoint
3:22 character I said she was in the prologue
3:24 it's the Viewpoint character who always
3:28 dies but I like to break rules just when
3:30 I get it established what the rule is
3:32 I like to break it so maybe the
3:34 Viewpoint character will die in the
3:36 prologue and maybe they
3:39 won't intriguing as his comment about
3:41 breaking the rules he has established
3:42 was about whether the POV character
3:45 would die we should probably keep an
3:47 open mind on that but let's assume for
3:49 now that the other elements that he has
3:51 usually used keeping the chapter in
3:53 rough chronological order with the rest
3:55 of the story including an element of
3:56 magic and setting up themes of the rest
3:59 of the book particularly the ending
4:00 still stands
4:02 particularly that last part that's one
4:04 of the main points of having a prologue
4:07 after all so with those parameters in
4:09 mind let's take a look at where we left
4:11 Jane westerling Rob's widow's story
4:14 because this prologue must pick up
4:16 somewhere soon after
4:18 that when Rob went North for what became
4:21 the Red Wedding Queen Jane stayed in
4:23 riverrun under the protection of Bryan
4:26 Tully the Blackfish but soon enough news
4:27 came through of what happened and
4:30 riverrun came under siege from the freze
4:32 and the Lannisters this was largely
4:34 ineffective until Jamie Lannister turned
4:37 up and forced EDM Tully to hand over the
4:40 castle the Blackfish managed to escape
4:42 but Jane and edmier were then both
4:44 Lannister prisoners and very important
4:47 ones edmier is obviously the lord of the
4:49 tulies now and although the tulies have
4:51 been deposed as Lords Paramount of the
4:54 reach they still have allies and Jane as
4:56 king Rob's Widow is also pretty
4:58 significant both personally and even
5:01 more so if she were carrying Rob's child
5:03 The Heir something jimie is very aware
5:07 of so he calls her before him and we get
5:10 this Jane westerling had been Rob
5:13 Stark's Queen the girl who cost him
5:16 everything with a wolf in her belly she
5:17 could have proved more dangerous than
5:21 the Blackfish she did not look dangerous
5:24 Jane was a willowy girl no more than 15
5:27 or 16 more Awkward than graceful she had
5:30 narrow hips breasts the size of apples a
5:32 mop of chestnut curls and the soft brown
5:35 eyes of a d pretty
5:38 enough there is a question I must ask
5:41 you are you carrying his child My
5:44 Lady Jane burst from her chair and would
5:45 have fled the room of the guard at the
5:48 door had not seized her by the arm she
5:50 is not said lady cibil as her daughter
5:53 struggled to escape I made certain of
5:56 that as your lord father bid
5:59 me which satisfies Jamie it turns out
6:01 that Jane's mother had been working for
6:03 Tywin all along and had been feeding her
6:06 Moon tea added to this it is now 6
6:09 months after she last saw Rob and she is
6:11 still described as willowy so she
6:14 doesn't look pregnant none of which is
6:17 conclusive but as I say it seems
6:19 unlikely now that she is pregnant
6:21 nevertheless jimie is taking no chances
6:24 she is to be taken to cly Rock along
6:26 with her mother and EDM Tali she will be
6:29 kept under guard for 2 years to make
6:31 very very sure that even if she does
6:34 later have a child everyone knows that
6:36 it can't have been robs as a complet
6:38 aight here there was a theory in the
6:41 fandom that maybe the Jane we saw wasn't
6:43 the real Jane perhaps the real Jane
6:46 escaped with the Blackfish the main
6:48 evidence for this is a comparison of how
6:51 Jane's hips are described here as narrow
6:54 and when cat sees her noting that she
6:56 had good hips and would have no problem
6:58 bearing children but that has been
7:00 largely discredited now Georg Martin has
7:03 said a couple of times that this was
7:05 just a simple mistake he is Human After
7:09 All anyway jie then sends Jane her
7:11 mother and edmure with an armed escort
7:14 off to cast Rock in doing so he is
7:16 clearly very concerned that they may
7:18 come under attack from the Blackfish and
7:20 the riverrun Garrison he had let loose
7:22 in the riverlands he allocates a 100
7:24 soldiers to guard the wagons then
7:28 doubles it then doubles it again so 400
7:30 he also rides for some way with sir
7:32 Foley prester the commander of the troop
7:35 to give him some final
7:37 instructions we don't know where the
7:40 Blackfish is Jamie reminded him but if
7:43 he can cut EDM free he will that will
7:46 not happen my Lord sley was no man's
7:49 fool Scouts and out Riders will screen
7:51 our March and will fortify our camps by
7:53 night I have picked 10 men to stay with
7:57 Tully day and night my best longbowman
7:59 if he should ride so much as a foot off
8:00 the road
8:02 they will loose so many shafts at him
8:04 that his own mother would take him for a
8:08 goose good Jamie would as Leaf have
8:11 Tully reached casty Rock safely but
8:13 better dead than fled best keep some
8:16 archers near Lord westling daughter as
8:20 well safley seemed taken back gowen's
8:23 girl she's the young Wolf's Widow Jamie
8:26 finished and twice as dangerous as edmir
8:29 if she were ever to escape us as you say
8:31 my Lord she will be
8:34 watched so archers have been set to kill
8:36 edmir and Jane if there is even a hint
8:40 that they might Escape Jamie is right to
8:42 be concerned about an attack there are
8:43 lots of groups close by in the
8:45 riverlands who might want to free those
8:48 prisoners or just kill some Lannisters
8:50 so if Jane westerling is in the prologue
8:52 and the prologue takes place in roughly
8:55 the right chronological order George Ro
8:56 Martin does shift things around a little
8:58 bit for dramatic effect but never so as
9:01 to skew the whole timeline then there
9:04 are only two real options either on
9:06 route to cast rock or after they have
9:09 reached there personally I can't really
9:11 see the dramatic purpose in having it
9:13 happen in casty rock as that's currently
9:15 a bit out of the way of the rest of the
9:17 main plot lines at the moment perhaps if
9:19 she were pregnant and gave birth to
9:22 Rob's Heir but as I said earlier I think
9:24 that's unlikely so an encounter on the
9:28 road does seem more likely or even given
9:30 the precautions James took pretty strongly
9:32 strongly
9:34 foreshadowed some have argued this isn't
9:35 likely because by the time of the
9:37 epilogue to A Dance with Dragons which
9:40 is perhaps a month or maybe even 6 weeks
9:42 after Jane and Co set off the Lannisters
9:44 in King's Landing clearly haven't
9:46 received any report of an attack but the
9:49 journey is over 400 mil if you take the
9:51 most direct route much of it through
9:53 hilly ground and winter and snow have
9:55 now come to the riverlands progress will
9:58 be slow and there's no reason to think
9:59 that a report would get back to the
10:02 Lannisters quickly at all particularly
10:03 if the attack happened in the occupied
10:06 territory of the riverlands what's more
10:08 interesting to me is that we also
10:10 haven't heard that they had arrived
10:12 safely in the westerlands which is
10:14 suspicious surely we would have had a
10:16 report that they had passed the golden
10:17 tooth or
10:20 sarsfield so let's take Jim's concern
10:23 about a possible attack seriously he is
10:25 primarily concerned about an attack by
10:27 the Blackfish and the riverrun Garrison
10:30 he set free so perhaps the pro log is an
10:32 attack by them which would be exciting
10:35 but probably not particularly magical in
10:37 its own right so what about lady
10:39 stonehart and what remains of the
10:41 Brotherhood without banners there is no
10:43 doubt that she would want to free her
10:46 brother and daughter-in-law if she could
10:48 and they are in the riverlands and if
10:50 she is there personally that adds the
10:52 magical element but do they have the
10:55 strength in numbers to launch such an
10:57 attack it's clear that when Beric
10:59 finally stayed dead and Lady stonehart
11:02 replaced him as leader replacing Justice
11:04 with vengeance as their guiding
11:06 principle many of the original members
11:09 left they have many sympathizers in the
11:11 riverlands but they are spread far and
11:13 they are no longer the military force
11:16 they once were taking on 400 Lannister
11:19 soldiers seems again unlikely but I have
11:23 another option a wolf attack I as
11:25 direwolf neria has spent the duration of
11:28 the war slowly building up a super pack
11:31 of wolves no one knows exactly how many
11:33 but there are reports of them being
11:36 hundreds strong enough to threaten that
11:38 Lannister Force particularly if they
11:40 attack at the same time as the Blackfish
11:43 or lady stonehart added to which Georg
11:45 Martin has more than hinted that this
11:47 Super PAC will have a significant role
11:49 to play in the books when asked about it
11:52 he has said you know I don't like to
11:55 give things away but you don't hang a
11:57 giant Wolfpack on the wall unless you
11:59 intend to use it reference there to
12:02 Czech off's gun the Super PAC will get
12:05 involved in the central plot it's just a
12:06 matter of whether it's in the prologue or
12:07 or
12:10 later finally I do wonder whether we've
12:12 had a hint of this at the start of the
12:14 pre-released Aya POV chapter from The
12:17 Winds of Winter at this time she is
12:20 still wogging into nimia when she sleeps
12:22 that chapter starts like
12:25 this she woke with a gasp not knowing
12:28 who she was or where the smell of blood
12:31 was heavy in her nostrils she had
12:33 dreamed of wolves again of running
12:35 through some dark Pine Forest with a
12:37 great pack at her heels hard on the
12:40 scent of prey she took a breath to quiet
12:42 the howling in her heart trying to
12:45 remember more of what she dreamt but
12:47 most of it had gone already there had
12:50 been blood in it though and a full moon
12:52 overhead and a tree that watched her as she
12:53 she
12:56 ran the Super PAC are clearly hunting
12:59 something or someone and catching them
13:02 judging by the repeated mention of blood
13:04 if this is what happens this also fits
13:06 in with a lot of the habits that Georg
13:08 ra Martin has established for his
13:10 prologues somebody can die at the end of
13:12 it there's a magical link through the
13:15 warging and whoever the POV character is
13:17 they are new Jamie and Brienne
13:19 incidentally are the only main prv
13:20 characters in The riverlands at this
13:22 point and they are last seen in Penny
13:25 tree Some Way north of riveron perhaps a
13:27 week after the Wagon train set off from
13:30 there so they may may be involved but
13:31 they'd have to move pretty quick to get
13:35 there in time without speculating too
13:36 much on what happens in the rest of the
13:38 Winds of Winter this also sets up a lot
13:41 of potential plot points for later on
13:43 Aya reclaiming her Stark identity and
13:45 heading back to Westeros the Stark
13:48 inheritance crisis if we get absolute
13:50 confirmation that Rob didn't have an
13:52 heir and just pause for one moment to
13:55 consider if Jane does die in this
13:57 chapter maybe even shot by a Lannister
13:59 Soldier after Jaimie had ordered it if
14:01 she tries to escape how would lady
14:04 stonehart react to that and it might
14:07 also set up what could be the start of a
14:09 stark fightback and Vengeance spree
14:10 against the fras and Lannisters in the
14:13 riverlands culminating in well I'll do
14:16 another video on that so who will be the
14:19 POV character it probably now won't be
14:22 Jane after what Geor Martin said POV
14:23 characters also tend to be slightly
14:26 outside the main action of the story
14:29 it's just a guess but perhaps a foly
14:31 prer the man Jaimie left in charge of
14:34 the operation for a minor character we
14:35 actually have quite a well-rounded
14:37 characterization for him he's competent
14:40 level-headed and loyal he reminds Jamie
14:43 of an inkeeper for example so to the
14:46 action if it follows the broad pattern
14:49 of previous prologues we might expect a
14:52 slow start inside the head of our POV
14:54 character with plenty of opportunities
14:55 to think about the past and about the
14:58 current situation enough for us to
14:59 understand where that person is coming
15:01 from and perhaps even develop a Little
15:04 Bit of Sympathy for them personally then
15:07 things turn up a notch The Wagon Train
15:09 gets attacked then a fateful decision by
15:12 our PV character like Pates to get the
15:14 key for the Alchemist or cresence to
15:17 attempt to poison Melisandre or Chets to
15:18 go through with the Mutiny at the Fist
15:21 of the first men then the magical twist
15:24 and death in the last few pages the
15:26 arrival of the others melisandre's magic
15:28 protecting her from Poison The Alchemist
15:30 being being a magically disguised
15:33 faceless man and so on perhaps in this
15:35 case the Fateful decision is to order
15:37 the archers to shoot Jane as she
15:39 attempts to escape or maybe even edmure
15:42 let's not forget that he's there too and
15:44 then the magical twist at the end
15:48 leading to a death is nimia herself
15:50 towering over the other wolves prowling
15:53 towards the person who gave that order
15:55 as the rest hang back leaving that kill
15:59 to her it's just a thought and would
16:01 make for an epic and possibly also
16:04 tragic opening to The Winds of Winter in
16:05 any event I think the attack on the
16:08 wagon train is looking very likely as the
16:09 the
16:11 prologue but what do you think the
16:13 prologue will be about let me know in
16:16 the comments below if you'd like more
