0:02 before you ask yes this is in fact the
0:03 guy that Brad Pitt's character in the
0:05 movie Fury is based off of and yes the
0:08 nickname War Daddy was
0:10 real today we're talking about the most
0:11 gangster tank commander in American
0:14 history Lafayette green poool his
0:17 Incredible Crew and their Infamous M4
0:20 a176 W Sherman tank known by its moniker
0:23 painted across the side in the mood this
0:24 video is brought to you by War Thunder
0:26 the best and most realistic vehicle
0:27 combat video game that has ever been
0:30 made this game has over 2500 tanks
0:32 planes helicopters boats and ships
0:33 seriously pretty much every vehicle
0:35 that's been used in armed conflict from
0:38 the 1920s until modern times is in this
0:39 game my favorite part about this game is
0:41 the history Easter eggs and how
0:43 realistic it is for example since we're
0:45 talking about laf at Green pool we can
0:47 actually go in pick his exact tank the M4
0:48 M4
0:51 a176 and then we can customize it to put
0:53 in the mood on the side of it just like
0:55 he had on his tank and then you can hop
0:57 over to x-ray mode and see how much work
0:59 they actually put into this game making
1:01 x-ray versions of every single vehicle
1:03 showing the crew and the different
1:04 components of all of it and then they
1:06 use this x-ray mode in gameplay so when
1:08 you shoot at an enemy tank you're not
1:09 just shooting at the tank until it blows
1:11 up you can shoot the enemy tank and
1:13 disable the tracks you could take out
1:15 the engine you could kill a single
1:16 member of the crew or you could take out
1:18 the entire crew and the best part about
1:21 all of this it's free on PC PlayStation
1:23 and Xbox so if you decide you want to
1:24 give it a try I will have it linked in
1:25 the description down below and when you
1:27 use my link you're going to get a bunch
1:29 of free stuff unlocked right off the bat
1:31 Vehicles skin ingame currency everything
1:33 you need to get started so go check it
1:34 out let's get back to the video Once
1:37 Upon a Time July 23rd 1919 two twins
1:40 would be born John Thomas pool and his
1:42 younger brother by 5 minutes Lafayette
1:44 green pool they both spent their entire
1:46 childhood growing up in Texas the Great
1:47 Depression happened when they were 10
1:49 years old despite that they were both
1:51 star athletes in middle school and high
1:52 school and then when they graduated from
1:56 high school in 1937 John and Lafayette
1:58 the two brothers wanted to join the Navy
1:59 together like everything else they' done
2:00 in their life at this point they go down
2:02 to the local Recruiting Office together
2:04 and they both sign up for the US Navy
2:06 then they go to get their physicals Jon
2:08 passes with flying colors but lay on the
2:10 other hand is rejected because his
2:11 eyesight isn't good enough because he
2:13 has one bad eye from an injury from when
2:14 he was younger which is turning into a
2:16 weird pattern at this point because
2:17 there's a shocking amount of badasses
2:19 that are originally rejected from the US
2:21 military for apparently having bad
2:22 eyesight I mean off the top of my head
2:24 we've got LW in red ramage the first
2:26 submarine Commander to earn the Medal of
2:27 Honor which I don't know why your vision
2:28 needs to be super good inside of a
2:30 submarine but what ever then we've got
2:34 Willis Ching Lee literally an Olympic
2:36 sniper that was the greatest Battleship
2:38 commander of all time that after he had
2:40 won the Olympics for Sharp Shooting was
2:42 told that his vision wasn't good enough
2:44 and then of course we have Jay Zer Medal
2:45 of Honor recipient the pilot of the most
2:48 decorated air crew in US history that
2:49 was also rejected because his vision
2:52 wasn't good enough and now we have laf
2:53 at Green pool the greatest American
2:56 tanker of all time also being rejected
2:58 because his vision just isn't quite good
3:00 enough now that being being said here's
3:01 where P's just a little bit different
3:03 from those other Heroes he's trying to
3:06 join in 1937 World War II has not kicked
3:08 off yet so he's not overly motivated to
3:10 join the military so unlike the other
3:12 three he does not cheat on his eye exam
3:13 to get in he decides that he's just
3:15 going to go off to college and become an
3:17 engineer so that's what happens John
3:18 ships off to go get trained for the Navy
3:20 lay decides he's going to stay around
3:21 town he helps his parents out on the
3:23 farm he goes off to college to become an
3:25 engineer and he also decides that he's
3:27 going to start boxing to earn some extra
3:28 money on the side and over the course of
3:30 the next three years he never loses a
3:31 single match because he is an incredibly
3:35 talented boxer then September 16th 1940
3:37 America decides to reinstitute the draft
3:39 because World War II is looming on
3:41 America because of this lay decides that
3:42 he's going to try to join the military
3:44 again but he's concerned that the Navy
3:45 still has records of him failing his
3:47 vision test from a couple of years ago
3:49 so instead this time he goes to an army
3:51 recruiter gets signed up goes to the
3:53 physical and this time he does what all
3:55 Great American Heroes do he cheats on
3:57 that eye exam and he passes seriously
3:58 the impact that a bunch of dudes
4:00 cheating on the eye exam to get into the
4:01 military is hat on the world that we
4:04 live in today is profound so P ships off
4:06 to training he excels at everything he
4:07 does and then every time he gets leave
4:09 he's always going out and taking boxing
4:11 prize fights to win more money on the
4:13 side so he finishes training gets
4:15 assigned to the 32 armored regiment
4:17 where he rapidly becomes a sergeant and
4:20 a tank commander again continuing to box
4:21 every second he can as World War II
4:23 ramps up the 3C armored regiment's
4:25 training gets more and more intense as
4:27 they get put in different climates in
4:28 different places all over the country
4:30 they train in Louisiana they train in
4:32 Pennsylvania and now they're out in the
4:34 Mojave desert in California and at this
4:36 point P's developed quite a name for
4:38 himself everybody knows who he is he's a
4:41 6'3 boxer that's 41-0 he's never been
4:43 defeated and he is one of the best if
4:45 not the best tank commander that they
4:46 have and because of this he gets a
4:48 little bit of sway with how things go so
4:50 he actually goes out and starts picking
4:52 his own tank crew and he picks the best
4:54 of the best in the driver seat he's got
4:56 24-year-old private first class Wilbert
5:00 Richards AKA baby a nickname that he got
5:01 when the crew was out for dinner one
5:03 night at a diner and the waitress looked
5:05 at him and said I didn't think they let
5:07 babies join the Army despite having a
5:08 baby face P said that he was the best
5:10 tank driver in all of World War II he
5:12 was so good that he could parallel park
5:14 a Sherman tank in the middle of downtown
5:16 New York during rush hour traffic in the
5:19 Gunner seat we have Willis oler AKA
5:21 groundhog a nickname that he got in the
5:23 Mojave Desert because he constantly wore
5:25 his goggles and had dirt rings from the
5:27 goggles around his eyes at all times he
5:29 is the oldest man in the crew at 28
5:30 years old he was a factory worker at an
5:32 ammunition plant he was exempt from the
5:34 draft but he wanted to go to war anyways
5:36 so much so that he had to go to the
5:38 government to get permission to quit his
5:40 job so that he could be in that tank at
5:42 loader we've got 21-year-old Delbert
5:45 bogs AKA jailbird a nickname that he got
5:47 because he was allegedly there because
5:49 the judge gave him the option of go to
5:52 war or go to jail standing at only 5'6
5:54 120 lbs jailbird had probably the most
5:56 physically demanding job in the entire
5:58 tank crew despite his stature he was
6:00 able to load that that gun faster than
6:02 pool could say fire and then an
6:03 assistant driver and bow Gunner we have
6:05 Arthur Reed who has not quite earned a
6:07 nickname yet the crew then decided that
6:09 their fearless leader needed a nickname
6:11 too P was already becoming a legend he
6:13 was an undefeated boxer he was one of
6:15 the best tank commanders America had and
6:17 he made sure that everybody in his crew
6:19 was squared away and taken care of at
6:21 all times he took complete
6:23 responsibility for them he was just like
6:25 their dad and for that reason they gave
6:26 him one of the coolest nicknames ever
6:29 and the same one from the movie Fury
6:32 Ward Daddy hey don't [ __ ] yourself War
6:35 daddy C is too high you owe me 40 bucks
6:37 unlike the movie however P did not
6:39 decide to name his tank Fury he gave it
6:41 a nickname that is a thousand times
6:43 cooler and Hollywood decided to change
6:44 for no good reason because they named
6:47 their tank in the mood when asked what
6:49 that meant later Lafayette simply said
6:52 that's just how I felt at the time I was
6:53 in the mood so we've got the crew we've
6:55 got the tank everybody has a cool
6:56 nickname It's Time to Get Ready for War
6:58 they start training together super hard
7:00 and become one a cohesive unit at this
7:02 point P who's still been going out
7:04 boxing every chance he can ends up
7:05 joining the Golden Gloves tournament and
7:07 he actually ends up winning and becoming
7:09 a Golden Gloves Champion which qualifies
7:10 him for the national tournament in
7:12 Chicago at this point the Army is
7:15 willing to let him take leave and go
7:17 participate in this National Tournament
7:18 because it looks really really good for
7:21 the US military if they have an active
7:23 duty Sergeant that's a tank commander
7:25 that's winning national titles for
7:27 boxing P however decides against it
7:28 because he has his crew he has his tank
7:30 and he's not going let them go off to
7:32 war without him so he decides to forego
7:34 his dream of becoming a national Golden
7:36 Glove boxing champion and instead goes
7:38 off to war because of that he is then
7:40 offered a slot as an officer which he
7:42 also refuses because he doesn't want to
7:44 leave his crew he decides that he's
7:46 going to keep being an NCO so he can be
7:49 a tank commander and go out with his
7:51 guys shortly after that they would all
7:53 ship off to England in 1943 once they
7:54 get to England they just keep training
7:56 getting ready waiting for orders and
7:59 then in April 1944 a famous boxer by the
8:01 the name of Joe Lewis aka the brown
8:04 bomber comes over for a morale mission
8:05 where he's going to box with some of the
8:07 troops you know get everybody ready for
8:09 war get him hyped up doing something
8:11 cool and guess who gets slotted to fight
8:14 him yeah Lafayette pool boxes Joe Lewis
8:15 two months before D-Day and if you don't
8:17 know who Joe Lewis is he's literally one
8:20 of the greatest boxers in the history of
8:23 the world this dude was 69 wins with 52
8:25 Knockouts he has one of the longest
8:28 reigning title runs ever he is on a
8:30 different level than Lafayette green
8:32 pool for sure despite that everybody's
8:34 hyped the entire regiment is going to
8:36 show up to watch War Daddy go toe-to-toe
8:38 with the brown bomber and it's going to
8:39 be the coolest thing that's ever
8:41 happened so they have this boxing match
8:42 and you have to understand this is a
8:44 recipe for disaster because Joe Lewis is
8:46 just over here trying to do the right
8:48 thing help with the war effort raise
8:49 morale of the troops before they go off
8:51 into battle you know he's being really
8:53 cool about this whole thing he's going
8:55 from unit to unit and he's boxing a new
8:58 army guy every night for like months
8:59 straight so I me I mean this is nothing
9:01 more than a glorified sparring match to
9:02 him he's not going in there trying to
9:04 actually hurt the army guy hopefully the
9:06 army guy is not going on to hurt him
9:08 he's just going out there to put on a
9:10 show p on the other hand remember just
9:12 gave up his dream for a national title
9:14 in boxing so that he could go to war and
9:16 now the World Heavyweight Champion is
9:18 there and he gets to box him so in the
9:19 back of his mind there's got to be a
9:22 part of him that's just like I mean
9:24 maybe I could take this guy so p goes in
9:26 there obviously wanting a real fight and
9:28 that's exactly what he got the match
9:30 starts Jo Lewis goes in there he's
9:31 dancing around he's pulling his punches
9:33 he's putting on a show he's being super
9:36 nice to p and then the first chance P
9:38 got he threw a hard punch and just
9:41 cracked Joe Lewis allegedly stumbled him
9:43 a little bit and then Joe Lewis tied up
9:45 with p and whispered in his ear I'm
9:47 going to teach you a big lesson the ref
9:49 then broke him apart and Joe Lewis
9:51 proceeded to beat the [ __ ] out of pool
9:53 in front of the entire regiment p is
9:55 later quoted as saying that he was
9:57 turned Any Which Way but Loose by the
9:58 brown bomber now the Silver Lining is
10:00 that pool somehow managed to not get
10:02 knocked out which is an achievement in
10:04 itself going up against Joe Lewis and
10:05 just so we're clear if you're not
10:07 familiar with Combat Sports Joe LS is
10:09 absolutely not being a dick right now
10:11 this is 100% expected this is how
10:13 everybody acts in that situation and
10:15 Lafayette pool knew that's how this
10:17 would go down the minute he decided to
10:19 crack him because he had like 40 plus
10:20 boxing matches he knew what he was
10:22 getting into he got exactly what he was
10:24 looking for and it's absolutely
10:26 hilarious and in waddy's defense it is
10:28 actually way cooler to say I got in a
10:30 legitimate fight with Joe Lewis and
10:32 survived even though I got my ass beat
10:34 than it is to say I had a glorified
10:36 sparring match with Joe Lewis one time
10:37 and pretty much everybody else agrees
10:39 and this serves to grow pool's
10:41 reputation even more fast forward 2
10:44 months June 23rd 1944 Waddy and his crew
10:46 would arrive at the beaches of Normandy
10:48 2 weeks after D-Day for the next 5 days
10:49 they would make their way to the front
10:51 lines following the trail of Destruction
10:52 left by the Allied Forces before them
10:55 and on the 6th day June 29th 1944 they
10:56 would go out on their first mission
10:58 attempting to drive the enemy further
11:00 back using using a combination of tanks
11:01 and infantry they would drive off the
11:03 main road through crop fields and they
11:04 would cut through the different fields
11:06 and each field was divided by this thin
11:09 row of trees and bushes that was called
11:10 a hedro as they go through field after
11:12 field and have the tanks drive through
11:14 hedro after hedro making a path for the
11:16 Infantry they would come through another
11:18 hedge row where seemingly nothing was
11:19 any different as they continued to
11:21 advance through the field as soon as
11:23 they reached the Midway point the two
11:24 corners of the Hedge R they were in up
11:26 ahead of them would open fire they had
11:28 walked directly into a German anti-tank
11:30 units and bushes they began taking fire
11:32 from anti-tank guns machine guns and
11:35 Panzer fou or tank punchers which were
11:37 an early German rocket launcher designed
11:38 to take out Allied tanks the Germans
11:40 were so well camouflaged in the Hedge
11:41 Rose ahead that they couldn't even be
11:43 seen the only thing they could fire at
11:45 was the muzzle flashes of the Germans
11:47 firing at them first as the Americans
11:48 began to return fire in the mood was
11:50 struck by a Panzer fou but it was
11:52 deflected off of its armor because they
11:53 were too far away when they fired it and
11:56 then a second and then a third and then
11:58 a fourth in the mood had been hit with
12:01 four tank fists and survived all of them
12:03 the American tanks including in the mood
12:04 attempted to drive forward to push
12:06 through the Ambush but as they closed
12:08 the distance between them and the German
12:09 anti-tank unit they came into the
12:11 effective range of the tank punchers in
12:14 the mood and 17 other m4s would be hit
12:16 and knocked out as P ordered his crew to
12:17 bail out he would come to the
12:18 realization that his bow Gunner and
12:20 assistant driver Arthur Reed had been
12:22 killed in action on impact with so many
12:24 tanks knocked out the entire unit was
12:25 forced to retreat and in a matter of
12:28 minutes P's entire Battalion had lost 25
12:33 % of its men 177 soldiers and 18 tanks
12:35 so P's unit falls back to the rear and
12:36 they begin consolidating figuring out
12:38 how many people died how many tanks they
12:41 lost refitting getting reinforcements
12:43 getting everything done and po receives
12:45 word that his tank while it was knocked
12:47 out is salvageable and it's going to be
12:48 up and running in a couple of weeks at
12:51 this point most tank Crews would be like
12:53 cool I'll take a couple of weeks off
12:54 hanging out back here not getting
12:56 ambushed but W daddy and his crew were
12:58 absolutely Furious that their friend was
12:59 just killed and they want to get back in
13:02 the fight now not in two weeks so pool
13:03 Demands a new tank and his chain of
13:05 command seeing that their Golden Boy
13:07 wanted a new tank turns and says here
13:09 you go and they give him their very
13:11 first version of the new Sherman M4 the
13:15 M4 a176 W with an even bigger gun that's
13:17 more capable of going toe-to-toe with
13:19 German tanks they are then immediately
13:21 given a replacement bow gun or an
13:22 assistant driver by the name of Bert
13:24 close a 19-year-old kid that looks like
13:26 he just got out of a high school
13:28 classroom and for that reason he is
13:29 immediately given the nicknamed school
13:31 boy as they paint in the mood to down
13:33 the side of their new tank and go back
13:35 into the fight P said he learned more in
13:37 that first 3 minutes of combat than he
13:38 did in the three years of training prior
13:40 to that he took note of how the Germans
13:42 put their main anti-tank guns in the
13:44 corners of the Hedge RS to triangulate
13:45 fire at the middle of the field and they
13:47 waited until they got into the middle of
13:49 the field before opening fire so they
13:50 couldn't Retreat back into the HED R
13:52 easily for that reason every time they
13:54 cut through a hedge R they would
13:56 immediately use the main gun and fire on
13:58 each Corner ahead of them and then rake
14:00 every everything in between with machine
14:02 gun fire attempting to Ambush the enemy
14:04 first and this extremely slow
14:06 painstaking form of combat went on for
14:08 the first month just field after field
14:11 Ambush after Ambush fight after fight it
14:14 took them a month to go 5 miles further
14:16 into enemy territory and this wasn't
14:17 just Po's unit this was the entire
14:20 military fighting tooth and nail for
14:22 every inch of land that they got because
14:24 of this General Omar Bradley decided to
14:26 launch operation Cobra on July 25th the
14:28 plan was to bomb the enemy first and and
14:32 then bomb the enemy again and again and
14:34 again and then roll in with tanks and
14:36 take care of whatever's left on July 26
14:39 1944 operation Cobra will reach its apex when
14:40 when
14:45 3,300 Allied bombers dropped 14,000 tons
14:47 of bombs in the span of 3 hours just for
14:50 the record so we're all clear 14,000
14:54 tons is over 30 million pounds in 3
14:55 hours with all the bombings breaking
14:57 down the enemy line the combat Pace
14:58 really picked up as in the mood sted Ed
15:01 traveling miles a day instead of miles a
15:02 month during that time in the mood 2
15:04 would come toe-to-toe with its first
15:05 German Panther Tank and it would take it
15:07 out in a single shot with its new and
15:10 improved 76 mm cannon from that moment
15:12 on W daddy his crew and In the Mood 2
15:13 LED point on pretty much every single
15:16 Mission his unit ran and he was driving
15:18 the enemy back as fast as humanly
15:19 possible in the following days it became
15:21 pretty apparent to pretty much everybody
15:23 that war Daddy and in the mood two were
15:24 in fact the main characters of this
15:26 story as he began sitting up higher and
15:28 higher in his Commander's position on
15:30 the tank pretty soon the other tankers
15:31 began to describe it as he was sitting
15:33 so high up on the tank that it looked
15:35 like he was riding it like a bull
15:37 showing off his cowboy boots over the
15:38 next several weeks they put so many
15:40 miles on In the Mood 2 and drove through
15:42 so many HED RS that they wore out the
15:44 engine and it needed to be replaced and
15:46 at this point P being who he is is like
15:47 I'm not waiting for that thing to get
15:49 fixed just give me another tank so I can
15:50 keep fighting and the chain of command
15:52 is like actually that's perfect because
15:54 now your original tank is fixed so you
16:02 back I'm no God P immediately is like no
16:04 absolutely not it's older it's slower
16:06 the gun is smaller and most importantly
16:08 my friend died in the assistant driver's
16:09 seat and I don't want to look at that
16:11 for the rest of this war I'm not taking
16:13 that tank he was then given a direct
16:14 order to take the tank to which he's
16:17 like okay fine he then orders the rest
16:20 of his crew to go over to In the Mood 2
16:21 and observe it getting fixed by the
16:23 mechanics and having a new motor put in
16:24 it which is weird because they're not
16:26 getting that tank back anyways so why on
16:28 Earth is he doing that in reality he
16:29 just want wanted to make sure that his
16:31 crew was somewhere so they couldn't get
16:33 blamed with what he's about to do so he
16:34 goes over by himself picks up his new
16:36 tank and then proceeds to immediately
16:38 drive it directly into a lake I mean
16:40 technically we don't know that for sure
16:42 the only official documentation as to
16:44 what happened to this tank is from the
16:46 maintenance crew and it says and I quote
16:48 the vehicle was believed to have been
16:51 driven into a
16:53 lake and at this point the chain of
16:55 command is just like okay well I mean
16:58 let's hold on this is the Golden Boy I
16:59 don't I don't want to get rid of him
17:00 hear me out he did just save a tank the
17:02 other day that we were going to lose he
17:03 ran in front of a bunch of machine gun
17:05 fire and got that tank back so now that
17:08 he threw this tank away it's basically a
17:09 net zero I think we should just let it
17:13 slide go ahead give him a new M4 a176 W
17:14 again and we'll get him back on the
17:15 front lines and that's it that's the
17:16 whole story they give him a new tank and
17:18 he goes back to fighting okay do you
17:20 understand how incredibly gangster that
17:22 is this is an entire another level of
17:24 plot armor okay going toe-to-toe with
17:26 the Enemy and like doing some crazy
17:28 stuff and surviving that's one level
17:30 going toe-to-toe with Uncle Sam about
17:32 his money is a completely another level
17:34 of plot armor that most people can't
17:35 even fathom for example when you go to
17:37 get out of the military they make you
17:39 turn in every piece of equipment they
17:41 ever gave you ever okay they're going to
17:43 pull out a sheet of paper that's this
17:45 long with a list of all of it and it's
17:46 going to be the most ridiculous stuff on
17:47 the planet they're going to be like yeah
17:51 we gave you a uh a marker tube type in
17:53 2003 what the [ __ ] is a marker tube type
17:55 oh a Sharpie you gave me a Sharpie in
17:57 2003 okay I'll just pay for it how much
18:00 does a government pay for Sharpies um
18:02 $79.95 is what we pay for [ __ ]
18:04 Sharpies around here and then you have
18:06 to pay the government $79.95 for a
18:08 Sharpie that you lost 20 years ago
18:09 otherwise they negatively impact your
18:11 credit score the rest of us mere mortals
18:12 are over here getting harassed by the US
18:15 military because we lost a canteen cup
18:17 at some point meanwhile W Daddy's over
18:19 here waterboarding an entire tank and
18:21 just walking away like nothing happened
18:23 and nobody cares this is an
18:25 unprecedented level of plot armor so
18:27 that's August 16th he gets his new tank
18:30 in the mood three August 17th the very
18:32 next day they come into a humongous
18:34 battle they catch up with an entire
18:36 German armored unit that has 12 Panther
18:38 tanks luckily the Allied Forces at this
18:40 point in time have air superiority so
18:42 they radio in for some planes and they
18:44 come in and they bomb the entire Panther
18:45 unit then after the planes drop a bunch
18:47 of bombs all over them then all of the
18:50 American Sherman tanks start to advance
18:51 and then a couple minutes later another
18:53 group of American planes come they were
18:55 either p38s or p-47s depending on which
18:57 source you want to read doesn't really
18:59 matter either way American planes come
19:00 and then they proceeded to bomb
19:02 everybody the American tanks included
19:04 and during this bombing run in the mood
19:06 three and the tank next to it would both
19:08 be hit luckily nobody in war Daddy's
19:10 crew would be hurt however both of the
19:12 tanks were knocked out at which point
19:13 the Battalion Commander orders everybody
19:15 to fall back because things have just
19:17 went catastrophically wrong po orders
19:19 his men to all bail out and run back
19:21 baby the driver and jailbird the loader
19:24 both cool dope they hop out of the tank
19:26 they run back it is now pool and school
19:28 boy left inside this tank the other tank
19:30 right next to in the mood 3 also bailes
19:32 out and they all run off however one of
19:33 those crew members is hurt and they're
19:35 laying on the ground Waddy sees this
19:38 hops out of his tank runs over to try to
19:40 save this guy drawing all the machine
19:43 gun fire from the German side on in the
19:44 mood three Waddy ends up making it over
19:46 to this other tanker and helping to save
19:49 him however Bert cl's school boy is now
19:51 pinned down underneath in the mood three
19:53 so he just digs in and buries himself
19:55 underneath the tank hoping that he's not
19:57 hit by enemy machine gun fire or an
19:59 American plane so that's all he does he
20:00 just lays underneath the tank and kind
20:02 of buries himself in the dirt and he
20:03 waits and he waits listening to the
20:05 machine gun fire bounce off his tank as
20:07 he hears American bombs exploding in the
20:10 background and he just Waits and 10
20:12 minutes go by and suddenly somebody runs
20:13 and Dives under the tank and it scares
20:15 the [ __ ] out of Bert close and he looks
20:17 over it's an American so he kind of
20:19 relaxes for a second but that dude
20:21 doesn't see Bert yet and Bert close
20:23 school boy recognizes this guy it was
20:25 his friend from basic training that he
20:27 hadn't seen in like 2 years and close
20:28 remembers on the first day of basic
20:30 training this guy got asked a question
20:32 by the drill instructor and he told the
20:34 drill instructor I don't know and from
20:35 that point on throughout the rest of
20:37 their training that particular drill
20:39 instructor would always tell this guy
20:40 what do you know bearing that in mind
20:42 school boy asks the guy hey what the
20:44 hell happened and that guy responds I
20:46 have no idea to which school boy
20:47 responds the same thing the drill
20:49 instructor would have responded what do
20:51 you know and that guy whipped his head
20:53 around recognizing the voice of his
20:55 friend and they were reunited after like
20:57 2 years not seeing each other not
20:58 knowing if they were alive they've just
21:00 ran into each other in the most
21:02 unfortunate circumstance on the planet
21:03 and then they just hung out for the next
21:05 hour in the middle of this firefight
21:07 catching up because there's literally
21:08 nothing else they could do and it's the
21:11 most Army thing I've ever heard ever so
21:12 while close is catching up with his
21:14 buddy W daddy makes his way back to
21:16 safety he carries that injured tanker
21:18 with him and then he realizes that he's
21:20 missing Bert close school boy and he was
21:23 not about to lose another assistant
21:25 driver and bow Gunner and he is ready to
21:28 run back into hell to go get him he is
21:30 then physically restrained and given a
21:32 direct order to not so like an hour goes
21:34 by school boy and his buddy are just
21:35 chilling underneath the remnants of in
21:37 the mood three waiting for the bombs to
21:39 clear up finally the German armor units
21:40 forced to retreat they get the all
21:42 cleared the planes aren't going to be
21:43 coming anymore and then they just kind
21:45 of get out from underneath the tank and
21:47 walk back and everything's okay so now
21:48 the next problem is that in the mood 3
21:51 is gone they no longer have a tank well
21:52 by that time they had already replaced
21:54 the motor and in the mood too and they
21:56 were ready to hop back in that so the
21:58 next day August 18th through August 26th
22:00 War Daddy and the crew of In the Mood 2
22:03 go ham they spearhead every single
22:05 Mission driving further and further into
22:08 enemy territory wrecking absolutely
22:10 anybody that gets in their way pool and
22:11 in the mood 3 are leading the entire
22:13 third armor division deeper and deeper
22:15 in enemy territory and during this point
22:16 of the war the third armor division
22:18 earns the nickname the spearhead
22:20 division because they are leading the
22:22 rest of the military into the fight
22:24 because they are advancing so rapidly it
22:26 is literally the largest unhealth care
22:28 system in the world being beheaded by
22:31 War daddy and his crew of in the mood
22:33 too they are pushing so hard so fast in
22:34 enemy territory that they start getting
22:37 direct orders from the Balian Commander
22:38 to slow down and let everybody else
22:40 catch up there's accounts of In the Mood
22:43 2 taking out entire infantry companies
22:47 by themselves 250 men in a single day
22:49 and somehow presumably Divine plot armor
22:50 despite the fact that they are the first
22:53 and sometimes the only one into a fight
22:55 they go completely untouched every
22:57 single time then August 27th they come
22:59 come across a major set of train tracks
23:01 at which point they're all
23:04 like I got an idea let's line the tanks
23:06 up and wait and that's what they did and
23:08 they waited and they waited and like 8
23:10 hours later here comes a German Train
23:12 full of all types of cargo and equipment
23:14 and tanks and armored vehicles rolling
23:16 down the tracks and a bunch of Sherman
23:18 tanks just open fire turning the entire
23:21 thing into a shooting gallery destroying
23:23 absolutely everything on this train at
23:25 which point p is like cool now that I
23:27 know which direction the trains are
23:28 headed I'm going to go get the next one
23:30 and he takes off heading the opposite
23:31 direction that the train is going to be
23:33 coming so he's going to catch this train
23:35 before anybody else and sure enough like
23:37 an hour later here comes another train
23:38 headed in the exact same direction it is
23:41 now in the mood 2 and this train going
23:43 head to-head as in the mood 2 starts
23:46 firing 76 mm rounds into the engine of
23:48 the locomotive after two shots it
23:49 completely destroys the locomotive
23:52 engine as the rest of the train Glides
23:53 to a halt as they pull around and the
23:55 rest of the train comes into view there
23:58 are four German Tiger 2 tanks tanks on
24:00 this train they haven't even ran into
24:02 one of these in combat yet and there's
24:04 four of them sitting dead on this train
24:05 but the Germans are running to get in
24:07 the tanks to use them as artillery and
24:10 get the guns aimed at In the Mood 2 and
24:12 one of those German guns will absolutely
24:15 destroy In the Mood 2 probably with a
24:16 single hit at this point school boy
24:18 starts using his 30 cal machine gun and
24:20 War daddy starts using the 50 cal up top
24:23 to shoot at these German Tiger tanks not
24:24 because it's actually going to hurt the
24:25 tanks but because all the machine gun
24:27 fire is keeping the Germans from getting
24:29 inside of them to be able to use them
24:30 and while that's going on Groundhog is
24:33 opening fire on the tanks with the 76 mm
24:35 over and over finally being able to
24:37 break through the tiger tanks armor
24:39 destroying all four of the tanks as they
24:41 continue to destroy everything else on
24:43 this train for the next half hour it is
24:45 a complete shooting galleries in the
24:47 mood to reeks havoc on this now
24:49 defenseless train at some point the rest
24:51 of the tanks catch up and they chip into
24:52 but the majority of the credit ends up
24:54 going to in the mood to When the Smoke
24:56 Clears they make sure all the Germans
24:58 are gone and then they go go in and see
25:00 what else if there's any cargo that's
25:01 salvageable hoping for like I don't know
25:04 German chocolate or food or most
25:06 importantly booze and they go in and
25:08 they start looking at all the cargo and
25:10 it's an entire train besides the tanks
25:11 and a couple armored cars that were on
25:14 there all the cargo is just like French
25:17 lingerie and fancy perfumes and a bunch
25:19 of woman's stuff basically they figured
25:20 the Germans were just loading up Trains
25:22 full of anything they could find a value
25:24 inside of France and trying to ship it
25:26 back by rail to Germany to extract as
25:27 much value as possible as there would
25:29 being forced to retreat now here's the
25:31 Silver Lining somebody had the brilliant
25:34 idea of like hey it's not food and it's
25:37 not beer but hear me out the entire 3D
25:40 ad is on its way to Belgium right now
25:42 and if we show up in Belgium and we give
25:44 all the ladies there a bunch of French
25:45 lingerie and perfume we're going to be
25:49 heroes and then maybe just maybe they'll
25:51 wear it for us if so facto there's now
25:53 an entire Regiment of M4 Sherman tanks
25:55 and Armored Cars full to the brim of
25:58 fancy French lingerie and perfume headed
25:59 to Belgium now at this point while
26:01 everybody else is loading up lingerie
26:02 and perfume the chain of command is
26:04 having a meeting because War daddy and
26:06 his tank crew just took out an entire
26:07 train pretty much by themselves
26:10 including four German Tiger 2 tanks so
26:12 we need to get them some kind of award
26:14 so it becomes clear to the chain of
26:15 command that these are probably the best
26:18 tank crew that America has right now and
26:19 they would do a better job of serving
26:22 the country if they were sent back home
26:23 and sent on tour where they could tell
26:26 their story and help sell war bonds and
26:27 honestly they've earned it at this point
26:29 so the chain of command then orders pool
26:30 to fall all the way back to the very
26:32 rear and let everybody else handle
26:34 everything from here on out fast forward
26:36 2 hours later whoever spearheading the
26:38 formation now comes up to this bridge
26:40 and this bridge is the only way across
26:41 this River and it's being guarded by
26:43 three German Panthers and Leadership has
26:45 no idea how to cross this bridge so
26:46 leadership has another meeting and
26:49 they're like [ __ ] I guess let's [ __ ] get
26:50 War Daddy back up here we need the main
26:53 character bring him up so all tanks War
26:56 daddy looks like I'm in P gets the order
26:58 he pulls out of the form drives to the
27:00 very front again he's been gone for a
27:03 whole 2 hours he gets to the front gets
27:04 briefed on what's going on he evaluates
27:06 the situation he looks off in the
27:08 distance there's this big hill on their
27:09 side of the river so he's like okay you
27:11 guys stay here I'm going to go handle
27:13 this so they go they drive up to the top
27:14 of this hill he now has a good view of
27:16 the rest of the river and he can
27:17 actually make out one of the German
27:19 Panther tanks he can't see the other two
27:20 he doesn't know how many are there he
27:22 just knows they're there they're so well
27:24 camouflaged but he can see one of them
27:26 so he takes aim and he gets them ready
27:27 and he's like we're going to we're just
27:29 going to Rapid Fire this entire thing he
27:32 opens fire and as soon as he fires
27:34 there's another round in by jailbird and
27:37 they fire again and again and again and
27:38 they take out this first Panther Tank
27:40 and they do it so fast and they fire so
27:42 many times that all the other tanks
27:44 think that they're getting ambushed and
27:46 they start retreating there was only two
27:47 tanks there he sees them once they start
27:50 moving but those tanks take off thinking
27:52 that there's way more tanks than just
27:54 one attacking them meanwhile Po's entire
27:55 units kind of just sitting there like
27:57 listening hearing tank fire in the back
27:59 wondering what's happening few minutes
28:01 later pool comes driving by again and
28:03 just drives right across the bridge so
28:05 everybody else is like okay and then
28:07 they follow him and then problem solved
28:09 War daddy Sav the day yet again at this
28:11 point P's probably thinking to himself
28:12 like okay this is the point where I'm
28:14 supposed to stop get orders they're
28:15 probably going to send me to the back of
28:16 the formation again and he's like but I
28:18 don't want that cuz off in the distance
28:20 a couple miles ahead he sees a German
28:21 town and he knows that that town is
28:23 probably full of all types of important
28:25 German supplies because a second ago
28:27 they had three German Panther tanks
28:29 trained on a single choke point it was a
28:30 pretty safe place to be and he knows
28:32 that if he can get there in a hurry he
28:33 can probably take out a bunch of more
28:35 enemy objectives so he just hauls ass
28:38 straight into this town right down Main
28:40 Street and sure enough there's four
28:42 German ammo trucks full of German war
28:44 supplies and he takes out all four of
28:46 them by himself as the rest of the unit
28:48 is desperately trying to keep up after a
28:50 while some of the other tanks finally
28:52 catch up to P but P keeps leading them
28:53 deeper and further into enemy held
28:55 territory and at dusk that night they'd
28:58 be ambushed by more Panther tanks and
28:59 that Ambush started by one of the
29:01 panther tanks shooting directly at In
29:02 the Mood 2 luckily it was a glancing
29:05 blow and everybody was okay in the mood
29:08 turns returns fire and scores a direct
29:10 hit knocking out the tank as the German
29:12 crew bailes out but the tank didn't
29:14 burst into flames yet and that's not
29:16 acceptable so In the Mood 2 advances to
29:18 shoot this tank again as they hit it
29:20 again the whole thing blows up as in the
29:23 mood 2 gets hit again from another
29:25 Panther Tank and again it glances off
29:27 the armor and everybody's okay but they
29:28 don't know where the hell it came from
29:30 because it's so dark out they can't
29:31 actually see anything so now they're
29:33 just waiting and they're waiting and
29:35 they're kind of moving back and forth
29:37 and this Panther Tank Fires at him again
29:39 and they could see the muzzle flash the
29:41 panther missed and in the mood starts
29:43 returning fire just in that general
29:45 direction firing blindly and after four
29:48 or five rounds sent that way they see an
29:50 enormous explosion and Flames as they
29:52 had scored a direct hit on the enemy
29:54 Panther Tank with pure luck any
29:55 remaining German forces are forced to
29:57 flee and that was the end of that battle
29:58 ble they bed down for the night they get
30:00 some more gas in the tank they get
30:02 everything fixed they eat some food and
30:04 the next morning they take off again
30:05 driving further into enemy held
30:07 territory the next morning War Daddy and
30:09 in the mood to take off hauling ass with
30:11 the rest of the tanks pull figures that
30:12 those two German Panthers Ambush them
30:14 because they were trying to protect
30:16 something and he wants to find out what
30:18 it was so he keeps charging deeper and
30:20 deeper in enemy held territory and
30:21 that's when he comes across an entire
30:24 German Supply Convoy and yet again War
30:26 Daddy and in the mood proceed to turn
30:28 this entire Supply aravan into a
30:30 shooting gallery in the mood alone is
30:32 credited with destroying over a 100
30:34 Vehicles two German Panther tanks two
30:38 other tanks three German 88 anti-tank
30:41 guns claiming over 50 enemies Kia
30:44 claiming 63 as prisoners of war and a
30:46 ton of others wounded When the Smoke
30:47 settles from this and the leadership
30:48 gets to figure out what actually
30:50 happened it is decided that the in the
30:52 mood crew is all going to receive bronze
30:54 stars and Lafayette green pool is going
30:56 to receive the distinguished service
30:57 cross he would also to be nominated for
30:59 the Medal of Honor but that was rejected
31:01 for some reason something to do with uh
31:03 being in a tank is a team effort and he
31:05 didn't do it by himself so he doesn't
31:06 deserve the Medal of Honor which doesn't
31:09 really make sense but it never does so
31:10 that happened now from here it's pretty
31:12 smooth Salem they don't have much
31:13 contact with the German military they're
31:15 pretty much just going from town to town
31:17 hanging out in a town at the end of
31:18 every night however in the mood
31:20 continues to be the number one spearhead
31:22 of the entire Division and now instead
31:24 of being the first into contact they're
31:27 the first into every town and that comes
31:28 with its own unique set of rewards
31:30 because as soon as American tanks start
31:32 rolling in all the people come running
31:34 out as they start celebrating that the
31:36 Americans are here to beat the Nazis and
31:38 they start showering them with gifts
31:41 cheeses breads fruits eggs and most
31:44 importantly boo so in in the mood gets
31:46 first dibs on all the booze this pattern
31:47 repeats itself day after day for a
31:49 little while and then they eventually
31:51 come up on a bigger city called Le in
31:53 Belgium once there they take the city
31:56 pretty easily capturing 1500 German PS
31:58 and then they essentially freed the town
31:59 at which point all the town's people
32:01 come rushing out to thank the Americans
32:03 and surprise surprise this city is full
32:05 of very attractive young Belgium women
32:07 they start giving the soldiers gifts
32:09 like food and booze and in exchange the
32:10 soldiers break out the fancy lingerie
32:12 and perfume that they liberated from
32:13 that train a couple of days ago and they
32:15 start giving that back in exchange and
32:17 the entire thing turns into one gigantic
32:19 block party that kind of ends up turning
32:21 into a [ __ ] show because all the
32:22 soldiers spread out as they start
32:24 sleeping with all these young women
32:25 showing them that inches are in fact
32:27 better than centimeters and every
32:28 everybody is just completely hammered
32:30 which was fine there was nothing wrong
32:31 with that right up until the next
32:32 morning when the chain of command got
32:34 the order to move out immediately at
32:35 which point the leadership a they're
32:37 hung over but B they're kind of looking
32:39 around it's just like there's passed out
32:40 people drunk all over the city on the
32:43 sidewalks in the streets it's chaos the
32:45 soldiers are all spread out because they
32:46 all went home with different women they
32:48 don't know where like 75% of their
32:49 soldiers even are they radio back
32:51 they're like we're going to we're going
32:53 to need a couple of days to regroup we
32:56 had an issue in town here so after that
32:57 they spend the next couple of days
32:59 regrouping and getting ready to move out
33:01 again after they get regrouped it's off
33:03 to the Sig freed line the border of
33:06 Germany guarded by dragons teeth mines
33:08 machine gun positions and Barb Wire they
33:10 have to finally make their last push and
33:12 break into Germany on their way to the
33:13 Sig freed line pool is informed that him
33:15 and his crew are not going to be allowed
33:16 to spearhead this Mission either and
33:17 they are to remain in the rear because
33:19 him and his crew were still going to get
33:21 sent home early so that they can sell
33:23 war bonds and be heroes pool is also
33:24 informed that they are going to be
33:26 taking away as loader Dell bogs jailbird
33:28 is going to be sent all the way to the
33:29 rear where he is going to have to
33:31 undergo a vision and hearing exam for
33:34 the next 2 weeks pretty much the entire
33:35 duration of the rest of their time in
33:37 theater before they get sent back home
33:39 and the actual reason for this was
33:41 because his brother had passed away in
33:43 combat two weeks prior and he was the
33:45 last remaining son in his family and the
33:47 commander did not want to have to tell
33:49 that Man's family that he died in combat
33:51 2 weeks before he was supposed to come
33:52 home so he was going to be sent all the
33:53 way to the rear where he was going to
33:55 stay until he could get sent back to
33:57 America bearing all this in mind po
33:58 agrees and he is going to remain in the
34:00 rear of the formation and he's not going
34:02 to be doing anything crazy he is then
34:03 assigned a brand new fresh out of basic
34:05 training private first class Kenneth
34:07 King to be the replacement loader for
34:10 jailbird the best m4 loader in all of
34:12 World War II somehow a German tank snuck
34:14 past the American line and managed to
34:16 Ambush P's section and the first tank
34:19 they managed to shoot was in the mood P
34:20 immediately orders his crew to return
34:22 fire which they do but the shell wasn't
34:24 effective against the panther as he
34:26 orders them to fire again but private
34:28 first class King wasn't able to reload
34:30 at the same Pace that jailbird was
34:32 before him so P orders baby to throw it
34:34 in reverse as he tries to get this kid
34:36 more time to reload the gun he ends up
34:37 jamming the gun as the panther fires
34:39 another Shell at in the mood and it
34:41 punches through in the mood and hits
34:43 private first class Kenneth King
34:44 directly in the head killing him
34:47 instantly as p and groundhog are both
34:49 ejected from the tank severely wounded
34:51 and the tank is still being thrown in
34:53 Reverse being manned by nobody except
34:56 for baby and school boy driving blind
34:57 they just continue to to travel in
34:59 Reverse as another Panther shell hits in
35:01 the mood but glances off after about 30
35:03 yards they end up hitting a ditch and
35:04 rolling the entire tank well that's
35:06 going on P who'd been ejected from the
35:08 tank moments earlier looks down to see
35:10 that one of his legs has been completely
35:11 shredded by the shrapnel as he reaches
35:13 into his pocket pulls out a morphine
35:16 seret basically a single one-time use
35:18 dose of morphine injects himself before
35:20 pulling out his pocket knife and
35:22 attempting to remove what's left of his
35:24 leg the nearby American tanks engage the
35:26 German Panther destroying it as a
35:28 neighboring tank commander runs to P's
35:31 Aid as p is yelling at him to go help
35:32 the people in the tank he doesn't he
35:34 runs up to P injects him with another
35:37 morphine seret before calling Medics to
35:39 Aid him when the Medics show up they
35:40 inject him with yet another morphine
35:43 seret and P loses Consciousness the rest
35:45 of the in the mood crew survives and
35:45 they end up ultimately getting
35:47 reassigned to different tank Crews where
35:49 they remain for the rest of World War II
35:51 p on the other hand has to have his
35:53 right leg amputated 8 in above the knee
35:55 and he is sent back home where he spends
35:57 the next 22 months in the in the
35:59 hospital battling different infections
36:01 rehabbing and getting fitted for a
36:02 prosthetic by the time he's released
36:05 from the hospital it is 1946 and World
36:07 War II is over and he is then
36:09 immediately discharged from the United
36:11 States military because he now no longer
36:14 has a leg laf at Green pool AKA W daddy
36:17 and his tank crew of in the mood were in
36:20 combat together for 81 days in World War
36:22 II and in that 81 days they are credited
36:26 with taking out 1,000 German soldiers
36:30 capturing 250 more destroying
36:34 275 armored vehicles and 12 German tanks
36:35 for this pool had been nominated for the
36:37 Medal of Honor twice the first time the
36:39 paperwork had apparently been lost and
36:41 the second time he was just flat out
36:43 rejected he was however awarded the
36:45 distinguished service cross the Legion
36:48 of Merit a Purple Heart the French qu
36:50 dear and the Belgian forier after being
36:52 released from the military he went back
36:53 home to Texas where him and his wife
36:55 started having kids and he worked as a
36:57 mechanic at a gas station for a number
36:59 of years and then after a few years the
37:01 United States military came out with a
37:02 special program where they would let
37:05 people rejoin the military if they had
37:07 special or desired talents regardless of
37:09 their physical disabilities and pool fit
37:10 that bill he was brought back into the
37:12 military to serve as an adviser and to
37:14 help train the next generation of
37:17 tankers he would do that from 1948 until
37:20 retiring in 1960 as a Warren officer 4
37:21 he then decides that his next Life
37:22 Adventure is going to be to be a
37:24 preacher which he does for a number of
37:25 years which honestly makes sense because
37:27 the Dude is super good at putting people
37:29 in touch with God so he does that for a
37:30 little while and then he gets bored with
37:32 that and he decides that he wants to
37:34 give back and help the community so he
37:35 decides that he's going to be a teacher
37:37 he goes and he becomes a middle school
37:39 shop teacher and on the first day of any
37:41 kids's shop class he would always
37:43 lecture them on the importance of safety
37:45 and how dangerous power tools could be
37:47 right before drilling a hole directly
37:50 into his wooden prosthetic leg but the
37:51 kids didn't know that at the time after
37:53 that he finally does truly retire and in
37:55 his retirement he forms a relationship
37:57 with the armored units at a of Fort Hood
37:58 they bring him out there they let him
38:00 drive in an M1 Abram's tank for the
38:02 first time he's blown away at how much
38:03 better they are than the tanks that he
38:05 drove during World War II they also have
38:07 him as the guest of honor at all their
38:09 military events where he commonly gets
38:11 to speak and he gets to know all the
38:13 guys and then in 1990 they're sent off
38:15 to fight in Desert Storm if you don't
38:16 know Desert Storm is considered to be
38:18 the last great tank battles the world
38:20 has ever seen the last time that tanks
38:22 were going toe-to-toe with one another
38:24 on the battlefield and the entire time
38:26 that his guys were out there lafette
38:28 pool was back home glued to the news
38:30 watching it every single moment of every
38:32 single day and as Desert Storm and by
38:34 extension tank versus tank warfare would
38:36 come to a close so would lafette pool
38:38 his health began to decline and he would
38:41 pass away at the age of 71 on May 30th
38:44 1991 the very same day that he received
38:46 word that his armored unit at a Fort
38:47 Hood had made their way to Germany
38:50 safely on their way back home to America
38:52 because Desert Storm was over bringing a
38:54 close not only to Tank Warfare as the
38:57 world knew it but the life of one of the
38:59 greatest men to ever do it so in
