0:01 the welding industry is huge with a lot
0:04 of jobs some making $15 an hour some
0:06 making $150 an hour today we're going to
0:07 talk about uh what to look for and what
0:09 to stay away from hi I'm Brandon from
0:11 Western Welden Academy I'm a second
0:12 shift Welden instructor there today
0:14 we're going to talk about Welden jobs
0:16 and pays highs and lows starting with
0:18 shipyards shapey yards is a very broad
0:20 name be working at a marina weld none
0:22 barges you can uh be in a federal
0:25 shapard weld none submarines how hard is
0:27 it to get a job in a shipyard obviously
0:28 the federal jobs are going to be the
0:30 paying the most but they're also the
0:31 hardest ones to get yeah so a lot of
0:33 background checks and a very long hire
0:35 process take up to months or you can get
0:38 hired into uh a basic Marina the higher
0:39 rate than in there at of spot after a
0:41 weld test so standard Marina job it
0:43 could be a very simple weld test you
0:45 know standard butt weld stick weld test
0:46 but that federal job that's paying them
0:49 more money has seven up to towards the 7
0:51 to 10 restricted well tests that are
0:52 going to be very very strict and very
0:54 grueling on you those work environments
0:56 are it varies between the two some of
0:58 the work environments can be really bad
1:00 or some of them can be really good clean
1:02 with shipyards being so broad uh the
1:03 basic Marina you're going to go into you
1:06 could be making upwards to $18 to $25 an
1:08 hour or on a federal shipyards you can
1:10 make up to 50 to 150 such as Newport
1:12 News that are hiring right now just to
1:14 recap shipyards Pros you're still
1:15 collecting a paycheck and you're still
1:18 build an experience cons the work
1:20 environment isn't the greatest on some
1:22 places and uh they long higher processes
1:24 at the good work environments jumping
1:26 way up in Pay we'll start talking about
1:29 nuclear power plants we actually had a
1:30 nuclear power plant come through our
1:32 school and talk to some of our students
1:34 it was a very good opportunity a
1:36 lifelong opportunity but it's a yearlong
1:37 worth of schooling but it's paid
1:38 schooling you know they were starting
1:41 them off at $63 an hour and I think it
1:43 was $120 a day per DM it's not like your
1:45 standard Marina job where you know
1:47 you're working in dirty environments
1:49 it's going to be a very clean and strict
1:50 environment with those jobs also you'll
1:52 be doing a lot of clean TIG welding
1:54 various different Metals but also you be
1:55 you could be working with a robot as a
1:57 technician uh learning and understanding
1:58 those is going to take a lot of
2:00 schooling you'll also be working around
2:02 nuclear reactors that put off quite a
2:04 bit of radiation I know that job
2:06 specifically they have to test you for
2:08 your radiation levels and uh if you're
2:10 dosing high on radiation then they're
2:12 going to you know lay you off for a
2:13 little while but still paid very good
2:16 work environments but very technical
2:17 this specific job was paying pretty high
2:20 $63 an hour but uh depending on your job
2:22 duties and what you're going to be doing
2:24 usually these places pay pretty well the
2:26 pros of these jobs is a very clean work
2:28 environment and good pay the cons of
2:30 these jobs you know higher processes a
2:32 lot of schooling and working with
2:34 radiation let's get into pipe ladders
2:36 and rig welders on average these guys
2:37 are going to be making the most money
2:40 working crazy hours and uh traveling
2:41 quite a bit these guys are working a
2:44 guaranteed 10 12 hours a day but it's
2:45 not unheard of for these guys to make
2:48 upwards of $20,000 a month but with that
2:50 $20,000 a month comes with unexpected
2:52 expenses running your own truck running
2:54 your own rig is comes with a lot of
2:56 Maintenance that $20,000 a month can
2:57 dwindle away fast if you're not
2:59 maintaining your your vehicle properly
3:01 and and also the insurance is not very
3:02 cheap either this is not a
3:04 familyfriendly industry we gone for
3:06 weeks and months at a time guaranteed
3:08 some pros of this job is you're making a
3:10 lot of money and if you're into the
3:12 traveling it's perfect for for that
3:13 you'll be able to see the entire country
3:15 no problem couple of cons uh you are
3:17 away from home you are traveling a lot
3:18 so if you have a family that doesn't
3:20 work really work out that great unless
3:21 you're bringing them with you also it's
3:22 going to be the hottest job in the
3:24 summer and the coldest job in the winner
3:25 so I hope this helped you make a
3:27 decision on what you want to do in your
3:28 welding career there's plenty of
3:30 opportunities more more than what we
3:31 discuss today if you want more
3:33 opportunities and figure out exactly
