0:02 right behind me here is the neighborhood
0:04 gossip Zone but it's actually his living
0:06 room and he just like opened his door
0:13 look we're taking a little detour to
0:26 today good morning everyone from
0:29 Shing we up at the butt crack of dawn to
0:32 do some EXP boring because it is so hot
0:34 this Summer that you just like can't
0:37 even be outdoors after noon up until
0:39 like 600 or 7 p.m. so we're up very very
0:56 exploring first stop of the day this
0:58 bridge that is apparently shaped like
1:00 the Chinese character for the number
1:02 eight I can't really see the resemblance
1:03 maybe it does from like a drone angle or
1:06 something but anyway even though it is
1:07 the butt crack of dawn the grandmas and
1:09 Grandpa are already out and bustling
1:11 we're going to go on down there and
1:12 check it [Music]
1:17 [Music]
1:20 out strolling through this little Canal
1:23 thingy it's the Venice of China isn't it
1:39 [Music] fore
2:50 speee [Music]
4:04 fore foree [Music]
4:37 of course the generation gap and the
4:38 desire of the younger generations to
4:40 have their own space is not the only
4:42 reason the main reason you'll almost
4:44 never see anyone under 40 living in
4:45 these neighborhoods despite the dirt
4:48 cheap rent is the fact that these houses
4:59 old so you might be thinking why not
5:00 just buy buy one of these cute old
5:03 houses and renovate it easier said than
5:06 done so right behind me is an example of
5:07 these old houses being renovated as you
5:10 can see it is not a simple project by
5:11 any means it's very complex because the
5:14 houses are just so old and so narrow and
5:15 cramped on the inside so it's sound like
5:17 you can just like buy one of those and
5:19 renovate it on your own unless you have
5:21 a lot of funds to do that with which
5:22 most people in their 20s and 30s I feel
5:24 like do not and if they do they probably
5:25 want to turn it into a hotel or
5:27 something that they can actually make
5:36 we're here at one of the little neighborhood
5:47 stores this lady just offered me an alcohol
5:54 popsicle oh I am not being Bamboozled
5:56 today I have tried these before on a
5:59 work trip to shaing and it was not the
6:16 concept is taking one for the team he's
6:20 going to try the fennel bean ice [Music]
6:28 cream so I don't even have a word to
6:30 describe the flavor of this it's like
6:32 sweet salty Umami all at the same time
6:34 it's it's just not like anything I've
6:36 ever tried before and then the butt end
6:38 of it is vanilla so they hit you with
6:40 this really intense beginning flavor the
6:42 brown part and then once you're through
6:43 with that they give you a pallet
6:47 neutralizer at the end tell the P sounds
6:48 pretty tell the [Music]
6:56 p in weather like this it's just
6:58 intolerable to be outside but I would
7:00 say of all the places to be outside this
7:02 is the best one because you're away from
7:06 the noise of the road I mean there's
7:08 some little little carts and stuff
7:10 bumping around but I mean come on it's
7:11 pretty quiet in here there's the
7:14 peaceful little Canal the shade of these
7:17 beautiful trees the grandmas Fanning
7:20 themselves the cats the dogs it's just a
7:23 very peaceful place to be and you can
7:25 almost forget that it's hot as the
7:27 depths of hell outside once in a while
7:28 cuz you're so distracted by how cute
7:30 this place is
7:32 this place is actually the home of a
7:34 famous author comedian I don't really
7:37 know how to define him his name is Lun
7:46 like later on in the evening we'll go on
7:49 a tour of lucian's house for now we're
8:24 this uncle's family has been living in
8:26 shaing for the same amount of time as
8:29 the United States has existed as a country
8:40 back in the day before there were planes
8:42 and trains and highways this place was
8:44 super important for local Commerce
8:47 because everything relied on water now
8:48 it's been demoted to a cute place to
9:16 [Music]
9:18 ch she get [Music]
9:36 we thought this was a calligraphy
9:38 Workshop but it's actually his living
9:40 room and he just like opened his door
10:04 wow [Laughter]
10:12 oh okay
10:14 okay [Music]
10:26 wow look at this shop here filled with
10:28 beautiful things and they're all going
10:30 to get burned burn burn the incense in
10:32 the temple burn these fake money
10:34 thingies for your ancestors burn this
10:36 burn that it's all going to be sent up
10:39 into the skies to be delivered to its intended
10:41 intended [Music]
10:51 recipients hidden away in those little
10:52 Canal neighborhoods there is this
10:55 gigantic ornate Temple and I saw on the
10:57 map there was a temple so I came here to
10:58 look at it and I was expecting one of
11:00 those like little you guys I was not
11:03 expecting this look how ornate this
11:06 place is I was not expecting something
11:09 like this it's very quiet though cuz it
11:13 is so hot out here today so nobody's
11:16 visiting the Buddhas in this heat next
11:18 stop a local park usually the kind of
11:20 place where I could get all kinds of
11:23 interesting footage but not today this
11:24 has got to be like the emptiest I've
11:26 ever seen a Chinese Park in the morning
11:28 usually they're completely full of
11:30 Grandma's dance and people doing ta Chi
11:33 and stuff this morning there's only one
11:34 thing happening and I guess it's cuz
11:35 it's too hot people don't want to go
11:37 outside but these grandmas are not
12:12 now we're on our way to another random
12:14 little Canal neighborhood to continue our
12:15 our
12:18 exploration in modern China these little
12:21 Alleyways are an endangered species so
12:24 I'm recording the few that are still left
12:27 left [Music]
12:55 right behind me here is the neighborhood gossip
12:58 gossip
13:54 [Music]
13:56 just encountered a chicken selling truck
13:58 and it's so hot outside this lady has
14:00 been spraying water on the chickens to
14:02 help keep them cool it's too hot for
14:04 humans for animals for anything to be outside
14:16 [Music]
14:19 today look at this cute little half door
14:21 I love it it's so adorable it's like
14:23 we're home we don't want to shut the
14:25 door cuz it'll be too dark in here but
14:26 we can't have a whole open door cuz
14:28 maybe a weirdo will come inside so we
14:29 got this half door [Music]
14:36 you can spend hours in these old
14:38 neighborhoods admiring all the tiny
14:40 details of these old homes and each one
14:43 has its own unique quirks and its own
14:46 personality but once people experience
14:47 the conveniences of life in a new
14:49 apartment complex with perfect plumbing
14:51 and perfect lighting in a modern kitchen
14:52 there's really no going back and I get
14:55 it these old houses are hard to live in
14:57 I just wish new architecture could be cuter
15:25 so now I'm in one of the more
15:27 commercialized areas so there's a bunch
15:29 of little shops all on the street
15:30 selling snacks selling knick-knacks
15:32 there's little coffee shops all kinds of
15:34 cute little things every house is turned
15:36 into some sort of cute business
15:38 establishment if you cross this little
15:40 Bridge here you will see that some of
15:42 these houses are just a storefront on
15:44 the front end and the back end is just
15:46 like a regular average Do's house and
15:47 then some of them the ones that have
15:49 built these little wooden balconies they
15:51 are some sort of cafe or bookstore or
15:54 something that has added a seating area
15:56 outside for the customers to sit so
15:57 these are houses that in previous years
15:59 probably would have been seen as being
16:01 kind of worthless honestly but now
16:02 because all the tourists are coming here
16:04 to take photos with the cute scenery all
16:05 of a sudden this place has become a
16:06 place of [Music]
16:10 [Music]
16:12 value especially on this side there are
16:15 more just average Joe homes like there's
16:16 Lally a grandma cooking a meal right
16:18 behind me like there's mostly just
16:20 regular people's kitchens here facing
16:22 out on this canal and then on the other
16:24 side is the main Commercial Street so
16:27 there's a bit more of the cafe bookstore
16:28 kind of thing going like there's a whole
16:30 row of balconies over there all those
16:32 belong to some kind of Cafe as time goes
16:33 on there'll be more and more of that and
16:36 less and less of just like the average
16:38 backyard situation it's a unique time to
16:40 be here right now because you do see the
16:41 commercialized stuff the cute
16:42 restaurants the cafes but you also get
16:44 to see local residents living here so
16:46 you really get to see like the fusion of
16:48 these two things but of course that's a
16:50 transient phase like it's not going to
16:52 be like that
16:54 forever all right everyone it is past
16:56 the point of being tolerable to be
16:59 outdoors so we are going to take a break
17:01 for a few hours and we will be back at
17:04 Sunset we're back everyone it is evening
17:07 it is now tolerable to be outside and we
17:09 were just ambling along to our evening
17:11 destination when we stumbled into this
17:14 this thing there's a door in the side of
17:16 this little mountain we're taking a
17:19 little detour to check out whatever this
17:22 thing is let's go it's very cool and
17:24 refreshing in here tell me this doesn't
17:25 look exactly like a waiting room in a hospital
17:27 hospital [Music]
17:33 this place is so Random it's just like a
17:35 tunnel full of little chairs and
17:36 everyone's just like doing their little
17:37 thing I feel like I'm in a video game
17:40 right now like what is this why does it
17:55 end well that was fascinating a nice
17:57 little detour and it's very cool and
17:59 refreshing in here there's even a
18:01 bathroom in this thing there's a hot
18:02 water dispenser so you can refill your
18:05 water bottle there's some
18:08 newspapers all the facilities for a day
18:10 of sitting and playing cards or whatever
18:11 else you want to do in here and there's
18:29 playing all right I'm out of here I
18:31 don't want to block their view so now
18:33 we're going to show you guys the shaing
18:40 NTI lotus pods for sale over here fans keychains
18:42 keychains and
18:55 this here you can buy aquarium
19:15 there's a guy selling sushi on the side
19:19 of the road unrefrigerated in this heat
19:22 whoever eats that you have a stomach
19:24 made out of steel who is going to dare
19:26 to eat that on this hot day this guy apparently
19:49 we started out our morning peaceful and
19:51 quiet with some grandmas Fanning
19:52 themselves some uncles fishing and we're
19:55 ending our evening in like the busiest
19:57 place in all of shaing it feels like
19:59 look at this place there are people
20:00 everywhere and if you get tired of the
20:02 crowds just head over to the canal or
20:04 some random back alley and you'll forget
20:25 all we have now left behind the bustling
20:27 commercialized area and we are now in
20:29 the residential area
20:32 so it's a lot more quiet and there's not
20:34 a whole lot going on but it is part of the
20:43 experience okay time for a special
20:45 performance as John has been working on
20:47 his British accent I feel like American
20:50 English should be the priority here just
20:53 saying so please let the people hear
20:55 your British
21:06 doing what's up
21:09 girl you guys tell me what accent this
21:10 is in the comments cuz it's definitely
21:11 not British it's not American I don't
21:14 really know what it is it doesn't matter
21:15 oh my God [Music]
21:47 [Music]
21:48 and of course what would a trip to
21:51 shaing be without visiting L's house
21:54 this is a rich people house from 100
21:57 years ago in China it's very ornate it's
22:05 here's the
22:09 bedroom canopy bed a must have item
22:10 here's the [Music]
22:14 [Music]
22:16 desk here's the
22:18 kitchen which is actually not that
22:19 luxurious compared to the rest of the
22:21 house kitchen's honestly pretty average
22:28 stove that is all for today everyone
22:30 hope you guys enjoyed our journey
22:33 through shaing even though it was a very
22:34 hot weekend we still saw a lot of fun
22:37 stuff met some interesting people and I
22:39 hope you guys enjoyed it as much as we
22:41 did shaing is literally hano's nextdoor
22:43 neighbor so it deserved a video of its
22:46 own as well and see you guys next time
