0:03 Hello, I am Hank Green and right now you
0:06 can fill out the 2025 census. My brother
0:11 and I since 2013 have done a census of
0:12 people who consume our content on the
0:14 internet. Basically every year, though I
0:16 have not done one. I didn't do one for
0:18 2024, but you can right now fill out the
0:21 2025 census. This is how we learn about
0:24 the people who consume our content and
0:25 and particularly the people who care the
0:27 most. Because obviously if you don't
0:28 care that much, you probably aren't
0:29 going to fill out the census. And if the
0:31 people who care more, I care about more.
0:33 So people who fill out the census help
0:36 me and John decide what we want to do in
0:39 2025 and 2026 and beyond. And because
0:41 the world has changed somewhat
0:44 substantially since 2023, there are a
0:47 number of new questions that I think are
0:49 really important. And if you want to
0:51 fill out the survey, please do. But now
0:55 what I'm going to do is I am going to go
0:58 over the 2023 census, which I have not
1:00 done yet. I keep waiting until I have a
1:02 2-hour block of time available because
1:03 it usually takes about 2 hours to go
1:05 over the whole census and I never do. Uh
1:07 so what's going to happen is I'm going
1:08 to change clothes several time during
1:10 this video and eventually I'll get
1:11 through it. All right. Well, we've got
1:13 all the censuses open so that we can
1:15 compare some years to each other. And so
1:17 we can start by looking at which census
1:20 you've participated in. None until this
1:23 one is 40%. So that that this year was
1:27 64 and then it was 40 and then it was
1:30 30. So we're dropping. This is an
1:31 interesting metric of like how new
1:33 people are to the community. So if
1:35 you've never filled out a census before,
1:38 you're a person who cares now. I mean
1:40 it's more likely to be a person who
1:41 cares now who didn't care last year.
1:43 This is the first one is 25 and this is
1:45 the first one is 20. This is going to
1:47 this is keeping going down which is
1:48 really interesting. But I think that it
1:49 starts to go up eventually again.
1:51 There's also the number of responses
1:54 total. The first censuses had the most
1:55 and then it went down and then it went
1:57 back up this year and that is because of
2:00 COVID maybe but also because of Tik Tok
2:02 like there were a bunch of people who
2:04 joined and who's like started watching
2:05 what I was doing particularly me but
2:08 also John through Tik Tok. And then this
2:11 is the first one is 36 and then in 2023
2:13 this is the first one was 33. We did
2:14 have like a long period of time there
2:18 where we basically weren't that in
2:20 enthralled by growing the community in
2:22 part because after 2014 when the fault
2:24 in our stars happened, we had that big
2:26 surge and it was it had like good parts
2:29 and bad parts. The good parts didn't
2:31 necessarily mean get didn't like
2:33 indicate to us, hey, get bigger. It's
2:36 interesting to see how this goes over
2:38 time that we've had that like sort of
2:41 large scale eb and then now we're sort
2:44 of back in to uh 30 or 40% of people are
2:46 new. Next super interesting thing to
2:48 look at is how old are you is always my
2:49 favorite part of the census. So you get
2:52 at the very beginning super fun and it's
2:54 fascinating. Uh boop boop boop boop
2:55 boop. Look at you guys getting older. So
2:57 we can start over here and we can look
3:00 at this. 17% of our audience is 13 to
3:03 15. Like most of our audience is
3:06 basically teenagers and nobody's over
3:08 35. Now I switched the numbers up the
3:09 second year but I've kept them the same
3:11 ever since. It's important to note 13 to
3:14 15 is like 3 years and 19 to 22 is also
3:17 4 years versus 23 to 30 which is many
3:19 more. It encompasses more people. As
3:21 this gets bigger it's not too surprising
3:23 that this kind of is going to shoot up
3:25 because that encompasses more people.
3:27 But it is super interesting to watch
3:30 like the the 55 plus slice go up and the
3:32 41 to 55 slice go up. But here in our
3:36 last last year in 2013 or 2023 the last
3:37 year we did a census again you can fill
3:39 out the 25 right now. We have a really
3:42 big slice like most people are between
3:44 20 and 40 between 23 and 40. It makes
3:47 sense to me that these smaller slices
3:49 would go down. It's a bit of a shame I
3:50 did this level of granularity at the
3:52 younger ages initially because that's
3:54 where more of our audience was. That's
3:56 obviously no longer the case. I think in
3:58 large part because people have just
3:59 gotten older. It's been 10 years since
4:01 we started doing the census on average.
4:02 People who were doing it back then are
4:04 10 years older than now. There's also
4:06 the fact that something else. Oh, I
4:08 think that our content is just for older
4:10 people now. If you look back, it makes
4:11 sense that that our audience was
4:13 younger. And now we're going to look at
4:15 how much people enjoy the various places
4:17 that they go on the internet, which is
4:19 fascinating and has changed a lot over
4:21 the years. Number one is going to be
4:23 YouTube the whole time. There's never
4:24 going to be a year when it's not
4:25 YouTube. This makes sense. Our our
4:28 audience is YouTube based. We're YouTube
4:30 native creators. That's where I think of
4:33 as home. The number two on this list was
4:36 Tumblr, which is wild. And you can watch
4:40 Tumblr drop down the ranks quite quickly
4:42 over the years, but then actually
4:45 surprisingly this year make a little bit
4:47 of a rebound. It's just under Tik Tok.
4:49 Vine hangs out at the bottom here and
4:51 then gets deleted musically all the way
4:53 at the bottom here. But then you can see
4:58 um Tik Tok appear and then jump all the
5:01 way to number three. That's a wild
5:04 thing. And then begin dropping. So uh
5:06 now is number four. I did add Discord
5:08 though, so you can't really count that
5:11 as as a drop. Consistent between these
5:14 two years between 2021 and 2023 is
5:16 YouTube, Instagram, Reddit. And that's
5:17 fascinating to me. That that does make
5:19 sense for our audience specifically.
5:20 That is not how things go on the
5:22 internet normally. And then a lot of
5:24 Discord use. So if you look at um how
5:26 much people enjoy their time, it's
5:28 Instagram, YouTube, Reddit, Discord, Tik
5:29 Tok. And if you look at how they are
5:31 spending their time, it's YouTube,
5:34 Instagram, Reddit, Facebook, Discord,
5:35 Tik Tok. So people don't enjoy their
5:37 time on Facebook. They still spend a lot
5:40 of time there because it is a top four
5:44 here. But in terms of this list, it's
5:46 uh down here at like 1, two, three,
5:49 four, five, six, seven, eight. after
5:50 Pinterest. And now we continue to
5:52 scroll. This is just a very long list of
5:54 how much time people spend on the
5:55 platforms. The most interesting thing
5:58 for me on this is the never bar. 46% of
6:01 people never go on Twitter versus 20% of
6:03 people who never go on Instagram.
6:04 There's a lot of people who kind of
6:06 fairly normally go on Instagram, but not
6:08 like every day. And then the big bar for
6:10 every day is going to be YouTube. Over
6:11 50% of people are on YouTube, which
6:14 makes sense. I spend hours per day on on
6:15 YouTube for sure. There's hours there's
6:18 some people spending hours per day on on
6:20 Reddit and some on Tumblr, but we got a
6:22 lot of nevers here. Fetverse, threads,
6:25 Pinterest, Bal, Twitch, Facebook.
6:27 Facebook is people are spending a little
6:28 bit of time. I'm a never. I'd never go
6:31 on Facebook, but the only real hours per
6:34 day players are Instagram, Tik Tok, and
6:36 YouTube. Where do you watch your
6:38 swipeable video? YouTube Shorts is the
6:39 biggest thing. This makes sense. It's a
6:40 YouTube audience. That's not the case
6:42 for me. I watch most of my Swipeable on
6:43 Tik Tok and Instagram personally.
6:45 Congress is considering banning Tik Tok.
6:48 How do you feel about this? Honestly, I
6:50 don't care is 26% and then I am very
6:53 opposed is 21. So, kind of biodal
6:54 distribution here between people who
6:56 just don't have a dog in the hunt and
6:57 people who really would like it to not
6:59 happen. Very few people are in favor of
7:02 the ban. This is still a thing that is
7:04 theoretically going to happen, I guess,
7:06 even after all these years. A lot of
7:08 people in the um other responses said
7:09 that they weren't from the US, but
7:11 there's some good takes in here that are
7:12 basically like, look, we need to do a
7:14 better job of regulating this stuff
7:16 generally. It is so addictive. It is so
7:18 much power being held. Whether or not
7:20 that's because it's being held by like
7:21 the Chinese government or because it's
7:23 being held by, you know, a few
7:24 billionaires in the US, it's still a lot
7:26 of power being held in terms of how
7:28 these algorithms shape our view of
7:30 reality, which I very much agree with.
7:32 Which of these streaming platforms do
7:34 you use? Netflix, Amazon, Disney Plus,
7:37 and then a big falloff for Hulu, HBO
7:38 Max, and then we got a big hunk of
7:40 Dropout subscribers. This is the first
7:42 time I added Dropout to this list. I'm
7:44 so excited to see what the 2025 numbers
7:45 look like here. A little more than Apple
7:48 TV among our audience, which I think is,
7:51 you know, very specific to us. And not
7:53 as many Nebula subscribers as I would
7:56 expect. 11% Nebula subs. And then
7:59 Curiosity Stream, which I think comes
8:00 with a Nebula subscription a lot of the
8:02 time. and Discovery Plus really bringing
8:04 up the rear there though I don't know if
8:06 maybe that is like looped into a number
8:08 of these other platforms now but yeah
8:11 83% of people's uh I'm so ex interested
8:13 to see if that drops next year I think
8:14 that I asked this question in previous
8:18 years so this was 92 and then that moved
8:20 to 83 so yeah a little bit Paramount
8:22 Plus got a little market share peacock
8:23 got a little market share you know
8:25 Netflix a lost which makes sense to me
8:27 because like I don't love it that much
8:28 how do you feel about your relationship
8:30 with social media and online content
8:32 platforms changed this question
8:35 unfortunately pretty healthy uh not very
8:38 healthy 100% bad other police specify
8:41 one year before and then 2023 very
8:42 healthy not a lot of people pretty
8:46 healthy 52% so that's even more not very
8:48 healthy 37% and then we got a fair
8:50 number of other please specifies I don't
8:51 use platforms other than YouTube
8:54 specifically because when I use them I I
8:56 was terribly unhealthy makes sense mid I
8:58 definitely spend too much time on them
8:59 but the content I consume is pretty good
9:02 I'd say honestly that is what I'm going
9:04 for. I'm not going to stop watching
9:05 YouTube videos. I just want to like
9:07 consume it in a healthy way. I want to
9:09 spend less time not in control. I want
9:11 to spend more time choosing what to
9:12 watch rather than being on scrollable
9:14 platforms that are choosing what I
9:16 watch. Depends on the day. Don't I know
9:17 it? But what kind of videos do you like
9:19 most on Vlog Brothers? I have asked this
9:22 question basically the whole time. We've
9:24 got explanations of complicated issues.
9:26 We got discussions of big ideas, silly
9:28 videos, daily life. This is going to go
9:30 way down as time goes on. Thoughts from
9:33 places, advice, videos that involve the
9:34 community, collaborations with other
9:36 YouTubers. Uh, so explanations of
9:38 complicated issues that people love
9:41 that. Oh, it dropped down and
9:43 discussions of big ideas took over
9:45 there. Discussions of big ideas stays on
9:47 top. Silly videos. People like, thoughts
9:48 from places, people like videos about
9:49 Hankachun's daily life. Y'all choose
9:52 came back hard uh this year. And then in
9:55 2023, what do we got? explanations of oh
9:58 discussions of big ideas drops and they
10:01 want us to to explain big ideas again.
10:02 You want us to explain it's so hard.
10:04 Those videos are so hard. You should
10:06 fill out the survey now. Actually, it
10:07 occurs to me. You should fill out the
10:09 survey before you watch this video. The
10:11 format made the list. Y'all choose
10:12 thoughts from places advice. I don't
10:14 know. We're going to have to rethink
10:16 this. I think I don't actually know what
10:18 kind of videos I even make on Vlog
10:20 Brothers. Do you listen to podcasts
10:21 frequently? Occasionally, never. Do you
10:24 listen to our podcasts? I got a lot of
10:26 nevers for for delete this which makes
10:27 sense. Dear Hank and John and the
10:28 anthroposine reviewed doing well.
10:30 Tangents a lot of nevers but not that
10:32 many honestly. Not that many nevers.
10:34 Tangents and and delete this and the
10:36 anthroposine reviewed are all on pause
10:37 right now in one way or another.
10:39 Complete the sentence. If uh if the
10:40 following platform had never been
10:42 invented, I think my life would be
10:43 people for the most part think that
10:45 their life would be worse without
10:48 YouTube. With Tik Tok they're really
10:50 ambivalent with more people saying it
10:53 would be better without Tik Tok. Twitter
10:56 w also very much that same shape. Shorts
10:58 the same shape. Interesting. Instagram
11:01 the same shape. Instagram reels more
11:02 people would rather Instagram reels not
11:04 exist. Facebook people want to want to
11:07 Facebook reels. People don't care. Seems
11:09 like Reddit a little bit more ambivalent
11:11 but some people really like it. WhatsApp
11:13 people really like text messages.
11:14 Everybody's like yes I like text
11:15 messages. That makes sense. That's the
11:16 first time I asked that question.
11:18 Favorite podcasts you learn from?
11:21 Lateral with Tom Scott and Dear Hank and
11:23 John. listening to Sean Carol's I also
11:26 listen to Mindscape Cortex Worlds Beyond
11:28 Number. I wouldn't have thought that
11:30 that would be a place to go learn, but I
11:31 think that that's a good idea. There's a
11:33 bunch I don't know on here. Mike Rose
11:36 podcast, The Wild Geese, Shortwave,
11:38 Great Hi-Fi Nation. Man, I feel like I
11:40 am I'm out of the loop. Dice
11:43 exploderies. Um, yeah, allies are 99%
11:45 invisible quality podcasts. Are you a
11:49 YouTube Premium subscriber? 22% of you.
11:53 I suggest it heartily but this year it
11:57 was 15% 20% and then it held steadyish
12:00 at 22%. So it is going up. Click on any
12:02 you have attended. We got a lot of nuns
12:05 on this list. Some various Hank and John
12:07 event. That's this is a very thin slice.
12:09 We have not done live events in a long
12:10 time. So this makes sense. I did a
12:12 little bit of standup. Some people went
12:14 to my standup 347 of you and some
12:17 college gigs and VidCon and some other
12:18 kind of thing. How do you find out
12:19 what's going on in Nerd Fighteria? Vlog
12:21 Brothers videos and the newsletter. We
12:23 are here. So we here had launched in
12:25 2023 at least. So that's good.
12:28 Instagram, Tik Tok, Twitter. I mean,
12:29 this is the this is the bulk of the
12:31 stuff, isn't it? But there is a there is
12:32 a Reddit community. I love the
12:34 subreddit. Paying a little visit. Would
12:36 you want to subscribe to a nice little
12:38 weekly email that features cool stuff
12:39 from the around the internet? Yes, look
12:42 at that. 83% would like to subscribe.
12:45 That actually exists. Oh, if you aren't
12:46 subscribed and you want to be, you can
12:48 put your email. Well, did I do that? I
12:50 have no idea if I did that. I don't
12:52 know. I'll check. Which of these things
12:55 do you own? Any of John Green's books?
12:56 The Anthroposine reviewed. Any Hank
13:00 Green books? Okay. 48%. Some kind of
13:02 Pizza John. Some other various
13:05 merchandise. Some awesome socks.
13:06 Awesome coffee subscription. Crash
13:08 Course Coin. Thank you to those people.
13:10 A Bizarre Beast pin. Best Project for
13:13 awesome mascot. This is great. What the
13:16 hell are you talking about? Says 52% of
13:18 people. That's shocking. Beanie San
13:21 Furbs, Dave the Fish, Be Dave is much
13:22 higher than I would have expected. Crank
13:25 Green, T-Rex, Jared did not get a lot of
13:28 points. Glenn of the Glenn, but Fartman,
13:29 come on. But Fartman is one of my
13:31 favorites. Old trash water. If you don't
13:32 know what I'm talking about, the Project
13:34 for Awesome is amazing and you should
13:37 enjoy it more frequently. Compared with
13:38 last year, are you watching YouTube
13:40 less? People are watching YouTube less
13:42 even though there there's still a lot of
13:43 YouTube people. This country data is
13:47 mostly useful just uh for us figuring
13:51 out how to schedule any travel or tours.
13:52 It's also very cool to see that there's
13:53 like basically somewhere somebody
13:56 everywhere mostly English-speaking
13:57 places but we our first
13:59 non-English-speaking place is Germany
14:01 then the Netherlands. We also also got
14:04 New Zealand, Sweden, India, Ireland,
14:06 Denmark, Brazil. Look, we got people in
14:09 Venezuela. We got people in East Timor,
14:11 in Ghana, and in Kosovo, in Kuwait, and
14:13 Laos. All right, what state are y'all
14:15 in? It's just going to mostly be a list
14:17 of states by population, but not quite,
14:19 I bet. California, New York, Texas. It's
14:21 mostly states by population, though.
14:23 Washington is not the fourth most
14:24 populous state. And I don't think that
14:26 Massachusetts is all is the fifth. Uh,
14:29 California, Texas, Florida. Man,
14:31 Florida, where are you on this list? Whoa,
14:33 Whoa,
14:35 we're not a big deal. They hate us
14:37 there. That's where we're from. We're
14:40 Florida people. We do not say nice
14:41 things about it all the time, though.
14:43 Washington, Massachusetts, Illinois,
14:46 Ohio. Where's Washington on this list?
14:47 That's our big That's our big place, you
14:50 guys. Washington is where it's at. We
14:51 should only tour in Washington. That's a
14:53 little bit weird. Did you see the
14:55 eclipse? I did not. I saw a partial
14:57 eclipse. Totality, baby. That's great.
14:59 Good job. 20% of y'all made it to the
15:02 eclipse. That's wild. That's wild.
15:04 Especially because obviously not all of
15:07 you are from the US. Gender woman 55%
15:10 men 32%. Now this is not what our
15:11 YouTube demographics say. So I think
15:13 there's a strong selection bias uh when
15:14 it comes to people who actually fill out
15:16 a survey toward women which is
15:18 interesting and also toward non-binary
15:21 people which is 14% of the people who
15:23 fill out the survey which is not
15:24 representative of the population of
15:27 non-binary people in the world with a
15:29 number of other people being unsure
15:32 gender fluid or agender. Next is race,
15:35 where you see that we're very white. 90%
15:37 white people filling out this survey.
15:39 Thank you to everybody who fills out the
15:41 survey. If you're not white, please fill
15:43 out the survey so that I can know what's
15:45 up with everybody. Do you think you are
15:48 an extrovert? An introvert? Uh different
15:49 on different days or somewhere in
15:51 between? We got a lot of introverts in
15:53 Nerd Fighteria. Not a lot of extroverts.
15:56 Not super surprising. What's your sexual
15:59 orientation? 43% heterosexual. It is the
16:02 largest slice, but if you add the rest
16:05 of them, they do beat out heterosexual.
16:07 We've got a a fairly large other please
16:09 specify despite the fact that this is a
16:11 somewhat robust grouping, but I know
16:13 there are other sexual orientations in
16:16 some situations. What do you even say
16:17 when you're a lesbian, but you're
16:20 non-binary or just queer or aerowce or
16:23 pansexual? Probably. Are you aware of
16:25 these things? Yes and no. An absolutely
16:28 remarkable thing. my books, John's
16:30 books. John's books got got a greater
16:31 market penetration. People know about
16:33 Patreon. That's the best of all the
16:35 things people know about Crash Course,
16:38 too. People don't know. What do people
16:39 really not know about? They don't know
16:41 about Journey to the Microcosmos, which
16:43 has been paused. We don't They don't
16:44 know about the Anthroposine review. They
16:45 really don't know about Study Hall,
16:47 though, though a lot of people do.
16:48 Microcosmos microscope, complexity
16:50 calendars, these are products. That
16:52 makes sense. Gubbins, people largely
16:53 don't know about that as a that's a
16:55 project, a still ongoing project. Good.
16:57 for people know about. We are here,
16:58 people know about. If you've ever bought
17:00 stuff from dftba.com, please check all
17:02 the apply. This is an important thing to
17:03 keep uh an eye on. We of course have
17:05 other ways of tracking this internally
17:07 at DFTBA, but this is one way that we do
17:09 it. I've never bought stuff, but then it
17:11 was a good experience. I would do it
17:14 again. I still wear and display this
17:16 stuff. I've done it multiple times. And
17:18 then also, we have this very small, it
17:20 was a bad experience, 188 of you, which
17:22 we do try to minimize as much as
17:23 possible. And we have lots of ways where
17:25 we do that internally, but I like to
17:28 look at this. It's less than 6 of a
17:30 percent. But always want to do better.
17:31 Always want to do better. We've also got
17:34 a good.store. We have even better uh
17:36 rankings here for good.store. Less than
17:38 half a percent of people had a bad
17:39 experience. A a lot of people have never
17:42 bought stuff. Uh but lots of people have
17:44 very good experience. So the project for
17:46 awesome, I don't know what that is, is
17:51 24% of people. Very few people. 73 of
17:52 you made a P4A video this year. I
17:55 donated this year. I watched the stream
17:58 this year. Uh I voted on charities this
17:59 year. I have donated. Watched in the
18:03 past. 20% active donors is a remarkable
18:05 number. We used to stream 24 hours a day
18:06 in the Project for Awesome and this year
18:07 we cut back and had some downtime. How
18:09 do you feel about that? A little bummed
18:11 said 6% of people. I thought it was
18:14 fine. I don't particularly participate
18:16 in the beef array anyway. I did not like
18:20 it. was 158 people. Think I just have to
18:22 apologize to those 158 people and we're
18:24 just going to do it the way that we
18:26 decided to do it. Oh, people to be
18:27 guests of the Project for Awesome. This
18:29 is a good idea. Let's do a word cloud on
18:30 that. And then after this one, I'm going
18:32 to disappear for a little bit. Brennan
18:34 Lee Mulligan. Well, I guess that's not
18:37 too much of a surprise. We've got Mroy,
18:41 Grace, Mamry Hart, Critical Role, Smos,
18:44 Answer in Progress, probably Brian David
18:46 Gilbert. Is this Gilbert? Britney
18:49 Broski, maybe Roman Mars, Adam Savage,
18:51 Barack Obama, Sam Rich, Pat Matt Pat,
18:53 Mythical People. It's about what I would
18:55 expect to see. And then here we have
18:56 your absolute favorite people on the
18:59 internet. We got a lot of dropout fans.
19:01 Tom Scott also coming in hard. That's
19:03 good to know. I love Tom and we are we
19:05 are friends. We hang out whenever we get
19:07 the chance. Markiplier, Rhett and Link,
19:09 Britney Broki, Jenna Marbles is in
19:12 there. Elise Meyers is in there. Contra
19:14 points. Phil Danco. That'd be fun to
19:16 have Phil come back on. I had a plan. I
19:18 forgot about this. And that's what I'll
19:21 do. When we come back next time, I will
19:24 tell you why I had this. Enter a number
19:27 between 1 and 100. Fascinated to see how
19:30 it turns out. Okay, I'm going to be back
19:32 to record more later, but I I got to
19:34 stop. It's It's 5:40, so I got to get
19:36 inside and and start making dinner. And
19:38 I'm back. So, I did this for a couple of
19:40 reasons. There were two reasons. One was
19:41 just to see how the distribution would
19:44 look. And it it looks roughly as you
19:46 would expect. You know, biggest spikes
19:52 at 69, 42, and 37. Interesting 37
19:53 situation here. And you know, nobody
19:56 says 100. That's a thing. But
19:57 interestingly, there are other like
19:59 things nobody says. 61 I think is the
20:03 least used number. So people hate 61. Uh
20:05 that's fascinating. The outliers that
20:08 you would expect of 69 and 42. 42 being
20:10 the biggest outlier cuz you're a bunch
20:12 of nerds. But then also 37 and Veritasia
20:15 made a video about why 37 is an outlier
20:17 when people are asked to choose a number
20:19 between 1 and 100 and that's very weird
20:22 and I had just watched this video when I
20:24 wrote the census and so I decided to ask
20:27 this question and then later I asked a
20:29 question do you watch the YouTube series
20:31 Veritassium the YouTube show or whatever
20:33 a YouTube channel is called and then I
20:35 was able to split the data out to show
20:37 you what it looks like with just the
20:39 people who watch Veritassium and my
20:42 hypothe hypothesis was that 37 would be
20:44 much lower because they would know about
20:45 this effect and they'd be like I won't
20:49 do the effect and I was wrong. What in
20:52 fact happened is that even more people
20:54 said 37 than in the group that includes
20:57 veritassium but also not. So what
20:59 happened was the opposite thing. If you
21:01 go back and forth here you see most
21:05 things go down uh while the while the 37
21:07 group goes up a little bit. I'm not
21:09 doing like a full statistical analysis
21:10 here, but you can see the difference.
21:13 This is a surprise to me. And now my
21:15 hypothesis has changed from people who
21:17 watch Veritasium will say, "Haha, you
21:19 won't get me. I'll put something other
21:21 than 37 to I would love to indulge in
21:25 the effect. I like 37 now because 37 is
21:26 a special number that we always like to
21:28 say." And so I will say 37. And that's
21:31 not what I expected, but nonetheless, I
21:32 did see an effect. That's happen this
21:34 happens sometimes where you have a
21:35 hypothesis and then you actually get the
21:37 opposite of the hypothesis and then
21:38 you're like well I guess I have to have
21:40 a new hypothesis then but I guess the
21:42 hypothesis should have been more cleanly
21:45 and clearly stated as I have a
21:47 prediction that if you watch Veritassium
21:49 there will be a change in the number of
21:52 people who choose 37 which did turn out
21:53 to be true but that wasn't actually my
21:56 initial hypothesis while 69 went down in
21:59 that group 42 roughly stayed at the same
22:01 place which means that you're also big
22:05 nerds So, Veritassium people, big nerds.
22:06 And now we're going to go to the next
22:08 question. Have you ever had a cancer?
22:10 You don't have to answer. And we've got
22:12 a bunch of people who said nope. So,
22:15 that's great. 96% of people, the people
22:17 still dealing with active disease. Right
22:21 now, there's 64 of you. Just.19%.
22:22 That's great. But to all of you out
22:26 there, I see you. We're doing it. Good
22:27 job. Have you ever been diagnosed with a
22:31 mental illness? We've got yes at 44% and
22:34 kind of at 20 and and no at 36. This is
22:36 again I think an outlier when it comes
22:40 to the uh nerd fighteria as opposed to
22:42 the general public. Probably a lot of
22:45 this is that we are more likely to seek
22:48 mental health support in this community.
22:49 But I didn't ask any more specifics
22:51 there which is probably for the best. If
22:53 you drink coffee, what kind of roast do
22:54 you like? We have a little bit of a
22:56 spike at medium. We have a lot of no
22:58 preferences. That's not that useful. We
23:00 sell coffee through Kats and Co. and I
23:02 was hoping that we'd have like a really
23:04 really substantial spike, but indeed
23:05 not. I'm a dark roast man. I think
23:07 people underestimate a dark roast. They
23:08 think it's going to be all burned
23:10 flavor, but that's not it, man. I don't
23:13 like a I don't like a light roast. So,
23:16 too much too much bean. Too much bean
23:18 left in there. Do you drink regular or
23:20 decaf? Uh decaf is tiny, but there is a
23:22 lot of a little bit of both. For those
23:23 of you who are not doing a little bit of
23:24 both, what are you thinking? At like
23:27 3:00, if I have a coffee, I'm ruining
23:29 the rest of my day. But if I have a
23:31 decaf iced coffee, that's just a nice
23:32 little treat. Have a nice little treat.
23:35 But then also, I don't drink coffee is
23:38 36%. That's a That's a surprisingly high
23:39 number of people. What are your favorite
23:42 tees? This I also would have liked a
23:43 little bit more specificity, but
23:49 shockingly, chai number one, 42%. 42% of
23:51 you said, "Do you like chai?" This is
23:53 mind-blowing information for me. Uh,
23:55 next down we we got we got three black
23:58 teas. That makes sense. But, you know,
23:59 black tea and English breakfast are
24:01 basically the same. It's it's weird to
24:04 have like Earl Grey be above black tea
24:05 for me. It's like if I asked you what
24:07 kind of coffee you like and you said
24:08 like hazelnut.
24:11 I love Earl Grey. It's just it's like,
24:13 you know, it's a very specific flavor. I
24:15 have Earl Grrey on the weekends cuz it's
24:16 my little treat. I have my little
24:18 milkshake all gray where I put like an
24:22 extra half of a packet of sugar in and
24:25 then I put milk in it like a lot of milk
24:28 and it's like so good. It's so tasty. We
24:30 have other herbal which is a lot of
24:32 people and then chamomile
24:33 and then other please specify and then
24:35 matcha. We actually are coming out with
24:36 a matcha soon. I think I've got it on my
24:37 porch right now. It's just been
24:38 delivered to my house. I should say we
24:40 have a chai. We have an amazing chai. It
24:42 is a decaf chai but it is very good. It
24:44 It's not like decaffeinated black tea.
24:46 There's just no black tea in it. It's so
24:47 good. I had it last night. I made a cup
24:48 for me and I made a cup for Catherine
24:50 and it's and and Orin had some because
24:54 it's decaf and it's very very tasty and
24:56 you should try our chai. I'm not really
24:59 a tea drinker. Is 20%. Wait a second.
25:02 Not a tea drinker is 20%. Not a coffee
25:05 drinker is 36%.
25:08 Then why does John sell more coffee than
25:10 I sell tea? John, we have Kats and Co.
25:12 and John's sort of like on coffee. He
25:14 does the coffee and I do the tea and
25:18 John selling what? Okay. Why is John?
25:20 John sells like we sell way more coffee
25:22 than we sell tea. But more than we HAVE
25:24 MORE TEA DRINKERS THAN COFFEE DRINKERS
25:26 THAT WE REACH. WHAT IS GOING ON? THIS IS
25:28 frustrating for me. I FEEL LIKE I SHOULD
25:30 BE winning and John's winning. What are
25:33 you doing tea drinkers? How can I reach
25:35 you? How can I reach you better? I need
25:37 to change something dramatically. I'm
25:40 losing. I'm losing despite the fact that
25:42 I have more market to address. My total
25:44 addressable market is larger, at least
25:46 in our core community.
25:48 Now, I'm like making rationalizations in
25:50 my head that like maybe people drink
25:54 coffee more daily than tea and uh you
25:56 know, people are more addicted to coffee
25:57 cuz it's got more caffe. I don't know,
25:59 but whatever. The other please specify
26:01 is interesting here because I concluded
26:02 a lot of teas. Mint, we have a great
26:04 mint tea. That's that's the that's
26:05 another herbal. Berry, hibiscus,
26:07 jasmine. Jasmine is great. I don't know
26:09 why I didn't put it on the list. Decaf.
26:11 You and me, man. It's so hard to source
26:14 decaf black tea. I have to buy it off
26:16 the store shelf. Like, I can sometimes
26:18 get it at my local tea shop, but
26:19 sometimes not. It's just not there's
26:21 like no demand for it. Just tea. In
26:23 England, tea is tea, but I don't know
26:25 what it is. This is wild because if you
26:27 ask for a tea in America, they're like,
26:28 "What kind of tea you want?" And you ask
26:30 for tea in England, you get black tea.
26:32 That's what you're getting. I recently
26:34 was in England and I came home and I was
26:36 like, "Can I get a cup of tea?" and and
26:38 they like look at you like what? That's
26:41 a weird thing to say. It's just a
26:42 cultural difference. Can I get a cup of
26:44 tea? And they're like, "What do you
26:46 mean?" What? Uh, give me more
26:47 information. Did you think that that
26:49 would be enough information? There's so
26:50 many different leaves I could put in
26:51 water. Have you ever purchased something
26:56 from good.store? I have not. 71% of you
26:58 need to be. There's a lot of overlap
26:59 between that percent and the people who
27:01 drink tea. So, I have great news for
27:02 you. We got awesome socks. We got sunbin
27:04 soap. We got awesome coffee. We got
27:05 other Oh, I didn't even put Kats and Co
27:07 as like I maybe it wasn't We hadn't done
27:09 that rebrand yet. What's your current
27:12 status? Oh, a good store. I have an
27:13 active subscription. I'm a former
27:16 member. I'm a potential future member.
27:18 Unlikely to be uh swayed into
27:20 subscribing. Fantastic. Well, that's a
27:22 lot of people that we could get. 11,000
27:24 people. That would be a big deal. That'd
27:26 be a big get. So, if you're considering,
27:28 let me know. Let me know what would what
27:30 would sway you. I should have asked that
27:31 question. What would sway you? What
27:34 future products would you be most Oh, we
27:36 hadn't launched tea yet, but a lot of
27:38 people wanted us to launch tea. So, we
27:39 did. I guess I feel like we've been
27:41 doing it forever, but I guess not. But,
27:42 of course, that's still the same
27:44 situation where there's we have we still
27:45 have more tea drinkers than coffee
27:47 drinkers. That doesn't change anything.
27:50 Puzzles. We tried a puzzle. Maybe we
27:54 should do puzzles differently. H puzzles
27:56 did well. Cleaning products. Cleaning
27:57 products. We also launched and has done
27:59 very well. I that might be out selling
28:01 tea, honestly, which is you never know
28:04 with something like this. You might say
28:06 like people are super excited. They'd
28:07 prefer to have tea, but then they're
28:08 actually buying more cleaning products.
28:10 That I think that is what has happened.
28:12 And then underwear. And then we've got
28:13 an other. I don't know what other would
28:14 be. Kids socks. Very low. We don't have
28:16 a lot of kids in the community. Uh we
28:18 did try kids socks, but it did not it
28:20 did not work. More types of bar shampoo,
28:23 please. I'd love an almondscented one.
28:26 Clothes. Candles. We are thinking about
28:29 that. Board games. Short stories. Books.
28:31 Short stories. That's an interesting
28:32 thought. That's an interesting thought.
28:36 Plushies. No money in my future. Adult
28:38 socks. We have adult socks. Books or
28:40 things to write in. All right. Yeah,
28:41 that's a good idea. Well, we have the
28:43 the book of good times. So, that's kind
28:45 of a thing. Ingredients. Good store can
28:47 do whatever. Like, it is just a place
28:49 where you can buy stuff. And like, you
28:50 know, you may have heard me make
28:52 reference to the fact that like I'd love
28:54 to sort of come for Amazon in some way
28:57 at some point, but obviously that's not
28:59 where I'm at right now. Basic needs
29:02 package. Maybe double-sided razors since
29:04 they're cheap. Yeah, basic needs package
29:05 is interesting. I would probably buy
29:07 socks if I could do a one time. You can
29:09 do onetime purchases now. Solid shampoo
29:11 and conditioner. Other hair products,
29:13 things that can ship internationally. We
29:15 have a solid shampoo. I don't know. We
29:16 don't have a solid conditioner. There's
29:17 like reasons why that's hard. dislike
29:20 the environmental impact.
29:21 I mean, I'm pretty sure our
29:23 environmental impact is lower than than
29:25 other ways of buying these same things,
29:26 but of course, you can not buy the
29:27 things, which is the lowest
29:30 environmental impact. Ridiculously fun
29:32 displayable stuff. Ridiculous fun
29:34 displayable stuff. All right, I like
29:37 that as a category. I'm going to write
29:39 that down. I mean, obviously, I like
29:40 displayable stuff. I don't know what
29:43 that means exactly, but I like it. Sets
29:46 of espresso cups and mugs. Cute idea.
29:48 Nice. Please do cleaning stuff. Great.
29:50 I'm so glad we did it for you. I need a
29:52 dish soap bar. We have one of those. Uh
29:54 with a cute little drain tray. I We have
29:56 one of those. One of those nice wooden
29:58 brushes. WE HAVE ONE OF THOSE. But
30:01 great. Great. You should work for me.
30:04 Science te's, nerdy tees, funny tees,
30:06 games. I have been thinking about this
30:09 so much. I've been doing science tees a
30:10 little bit on the side at Hank's
30:12 channel. There's an opportunity there.
30:14 What's most compelling about the good
30:16 store? Good prices. I love the products.
30:18 Hank and John's involvement. The part
30:20 where all the profit goes to charity.
30:22 Okay, that makes sense. The fun. I'd say
30:24 that these first two are very nerd
30:26 fighteria specific in my experience. If
30:29 if I just am pitching this to somebody
30:31 who doesn't like as an advertisement,
30:32 some somebody who doesn't really know
30:35 who I am, then they don't trust the all
30:37 the profit going to charity message very
30:39 much. That seems like it must be fake to
30:41 them. And then obviously the Hank and
30:42 John album doesn't matter to them. I
30:44 want the products and the prices to be
30:45 higher on this list. But of course, this
30:46 is the group of people for which these
30:48 two things are going to matter the most.
30:49 Overall, how much trust do you have in
30:52 the news media? A great deal, a lot, a
30:54 moderate amount, a little, none at all.
30:56 This is actually one that I have asked
30:58 for several years. And I'm going to
31:01 pause. I'm going to pause because I'm
31:02 going to make someone breakfast. All
31:04 right, I'm back. I've been asking this
31:07 question for a few years because it
31:08 started to feel like an important
31:10 question to ask over how much do you tr
31:12 trust you have in the news media. We can
31:15 see here that actually
31:18 this has remained remarkably consistent
31:22 over the years. A little bit of change
31:25 between these two. We do see a drop in a
31:27 lot here and uh and an increase in a
31:30 little and this makes me make sense to
31:32 like I honestly I've felt more like
31:34 that. Interested to see how 2025 looks.
31:36 We've also got how much money do you
31:38 make which I think that I've asked over
31:40 a few years. Now, this is tricky because
31:42 inflation is definitely a thing. We can
31:44 see that the average amount of money
31:47 that Nerd Fighteria makes is increasing.
31:50 Uh, this this slice here of 75 to 100K
31:52 has well, I mean, this looks like it's
31:56 basically doubled uh to 5.27% from well,
31:58 not quite doubled, but that's a
31:59 substantial increase in terms of
32:00 percentage increase. But this makes
32:02 sense. You know, a lot of people are
32:03 finished with school, people are getting
32:05 older. this this group of people who are
32:08 currently uh with no income goes down
32:10 because people are graduating or
32:11 probably a lot of these people are in
32:13 school. Certainly not all of them. And
32:15 then you know you see in that middle
32:18 being thin but that that makes some
32:20 sense because that's 10 to 30,000 which
32:23 at this point is uh uh not what a lot of
32:26 people make in their professional
32:28 careers. Congrats to everybody who has
32:31 moved into uh higher higher incomes over
32:33 the last few years. We've also got click
32:35 on things that you have. People have
32:36 student loans. A lot of people have a
32:39 mortgage. 22% of you have mortgages. Car
32:42 loans. Credit card debt 15%. That's
32:44 certainly lower than the average
32:46 American. Medical debt also lower than
32:48 the average American. None of these. No
32:50 debt. None. No. No major sources of
32:53 debt. That's interesting. Is a solid 42%
32:56 of you. That's wild. That is not That is
32:58 not t That is also atypical. What's that
33:00 behind you? That's a fun question, Hank.
33:02 What's that behind you? I don't know,
33:05 man. A chair. The summer breeze makes me
33:09 feel fine. A cat. A massive display of
33:12 tiny plastic hobs of plastic horses that
33:15 my husband is fond of. Ah, it's Jared.
33:17 It's my cat. It's a lot of cats. My bed.
33:20 My chair head. A wall was the number one
33:22 thing behind people. It was a wall. Some
33:26 people had dread. Um, 214 of you had
33:30 dread behind you. Barry. Who's Barry?
33:31 Someone needs to explain to me who Barry
33:33 is. Oh, this was just one person who
33:36 left one very long comment. Narrator:
33:38 black screen with text. The sound of
33:39 buzzing bees can be heard according to
33:42 all known laws of aviation. This is the
33:45 from the bee movie. It's it's a it's
33:46 copy pasta from the bee movie.
33:48 Everybody, if you're eligible in the US,
33:50 do you plan on voting this year? 60%
33:53 said yes. 1.4% said no. This is the
33:56 thing about people who fill out surveys.
33:57 Ah, they're got to be more likely to be
33:59 voters. But also I think in general when
34:01 I make a video that's like you should
34:02 vote I'm preaching very much to the
34:06 choir. Certainly these people matter but
34:08 uh we definitely have a solid majority
34:10 of people who vote and thanks for
34:12 voting. What is the highest degree that
34:15 you have? Give me a little bit more.
34:17 Actually that hasn't changed that much.
34:19 So people have moved into sort of more
34:21 people have college degrees
34:23 and graduate degrees. Consider the state
34:25 of the world right now. Would you say
34:28 that you're uh so overwhelmed I'm having
34:30 a hard time coping? That's I'm
34:32 definitely going to have this one again.
34:35 13% extremely overwhelmed. 22%
34:39 overwhelmed 29% troubled untroubled
34:41 2.9%. I kind of set it up for that.
34:42 That's not how you would ask that
34:43 question in a survey if you wanted to
34:45 get good science. But who isn't
34:46 troubled? You know who isn't troubled?
34:48 If you're in school, what kind of school
34:51 are you in? Not in school is now 61%. I
34:53 think I asked this. not in school,
34:55 continues to go up. That makes sense.
34:58 Specific about college degrees. I have a
34:59 college degree. I currently am working
35:02 on a college degree. I expect to begin a
35:03 college degree. That's a fairly
35:06 significant jump to 62% from 58%. We're
35:08 just getting older, you guys. I just
35:09 like lots of different questions that
35:11 that indicate people are moving through
35:13 the stages of life. Employment
35:16 situation. No. In school, no job. I have
35:18 a job. I like it. See how we're doing on
35:20 jobs, everybody? I have a job. I like
35:22 it. Is going up, which is great. That's
35:25 41%. I don't have a job and I don't like
35:27 it. Is up a little bit. That makes
35:28 sense. People are graduating from
35:30 college. I have a job and I don't need
35:33 one. That's increased a little bit, but
35:35 I'm glad to see that more people have
35:37 jobs and like it. Employment situation
35:39 part two. All of my income comes from
35:40 one regular job. Do you consider
35:43 yourself wealthy? No. Maybe. Yes. So, no
35:46 increased substantially there. Uh, which
35:48 is interesting because people have more
35:50 income. I'm not surprised that people
35:52 don't consider themselves wealthy. I'm
35:53 the the change is the thing that I'm
35:55 interested in here. It's a pretty
35:58 significant change from 12% to 10%,
36:00 inflation probably is the thing that
36:02 happened. Do you have children? We have
36:06 yes at 14%. Uh moving up from 11%,
36:10 babies do continue to happen. And then
36:12 we have our currently pregnant slice
36:15 this year.7 and the year before
36:18 6. So I mean that that matters. Do you
36:20 watch the channel Veritassium? This is
36:22 how I sliced up the data. Thank you to
36:24 the people who gave me that opportunity.
36:27 Which best describes you? There 24%
36:29 watch every new Vlog Brothers video as
36:31 soon as it comes out. Probably see every
36:33 new video eventually. That's over half
36:36 of people. I watch most new Vlog
36:37 Brothers videos. I watch when I remember
36:41 to check. That there is 70% of people.
36:43 Um, that's wild. I'll be interested to
36:44 see how that goes this year. Do you
36:46 think that a universe with humans is
36:47 better than a universe without them?
36:50 Yes. And it's complicated. Winning out
36:53 over no substantially, which is uh
36:55 encouraging. In three words or less,
36:57 what are you most worried about? Climate
37:00 is number one, appearing 4,500 times.
37:03 That uh is understandable. That is a
37:05 kind of a whole world problem. We've
37:08 also got warming in here. We've got
37:11 trans, we've got genocide, we've got
37:13 democracy, we've got housing, we've got
37:16 Palestine, we've got uh humanity, we've
37:19 got losing, we've got college, we've got
37:21 economy, we've got poverty, we've got
37:23 polarization. I am also very worried
37:25 about climate. I'm very worried about
37:27 democracy. I'm very worried about Gaza.
37:29 I am worried about Trump. It makes sense
37:31 to me. I would also do this. Would it
37:33 make sense to me that that the things we
37:35 would list would be big global things?
37:37 It took a while to get to family to get
37:40 to like something that's like one step
37:41 away from us. It'll be interesting to
37:44 see how that has changed for 2025.
37:45 What's make something making you
37:47 optimistic right now? This is always a
37:49 nice thing. People coming in at the top,
37:51 but I'm sure that there's a
37:53 qualification after people. People who
37:54 I've met incredible people. People
37:56 continue to be curious. There's still
37:58 good people out there. Smart people.
38:00 Good people fighting. People keep
38:02 fighting for what is right. Sometimes
38:04 you can find people that don't entirely
38:06 suck. Oh boy. Acknowledge that there are
38:08 good people and caring people out there.
38:10 People say it gets better. It does get
38:11 better. Watching people learn,
38:13 especially my son. When did you start
38:15 watching Vlog Brothers videos regularly?
38:17 This is fascinating. More people started
38:19 watching in 2007 than started watching
38:23 in 2017. So that's fascin 2017 was our a
38:25 weak year for us. I don't know what we
38:26 were up to, but a lot of people started
38:28 watching in 2012, which is is fault in
38:30 our stars times. This sort of uh
38:34 comeback is interesting. 2020 and not a
38:36 lot of people seeing 2021 is
38:36 interesting. Yeah, those people
38:38 certainly are there. The people coming
38:40 in from Tik Tok or from Hank's channel
38:41 or whatever, there's always going to be
38:42 a bias toward people who started
38:44 watching recently, of course, because
38:46 they're still currently watching.
38:48 Absolutely bonkers how many people are
38:51 still with us from 2008. So, thank you
38:52 to all of those people. And and also
38:55 very amazing how flat this is. You know,
38:57 there's not like a year that was big.
38:58 And you would normally expect to see
39:00 that be the most recent year being the
39:02 big year and it is. You know, it's the
39:03 biggest year, but you would expect to
39:05 see that be like funk. Uh because
39:07 people's habits change. How much time do
39:10 you spend the internet per day? 6 to 8
39:12 hours? Uh more than 8 hours? I think I
39:14 might be more than 8 hours. Uh depending
39:16 on how you count the internet, but not
39:18 surprising that uh a lot of people are
39:21 pretty significant internet users. We
39:22 really live on the internet, you guys.
39:26 Not not us. I mean us, but also all of
39:28 us people these days. How many books do
39:31 you read a year? 3 to 10 being the the
39:33 top makes sense to me. None. This is
39:36 very uh not representative of the
39:37 average American where none is is I
39:40 think over half. Um but it makes sense
39:42 to me that that the grouping would be
39:44 here. That's probably where I am. I
39:46 probably don't read more than 15 books a
39:47 year. Watch a lot of YouTube videos and
39:50 that has taken over especially these
39:51 like long videos that are really good.
39:53 Which of these books have you read?
39:56 Fault in our stars 77% looking for paper
39:58 towns. anthroposine turtles. Absolutely
40:00 remarkable thing. I beat one of John's
40:02 books. I also beat two of John's books
40:04 that were co-authored. Do you support
40:07 our projects on Patreon? Yes, I do this
40:08 in part so that I can send those people
40:10 a special special message a special
40:11 message. Do you have worries or
40:14 critiques for us? This is always like a
40:16 surprisingly nice little thing to read,
40:19 but of course people have critiques for
40:20 us, which I appreciate. Not spending
40:23 enough time with family. Y'all seem so I
40:25 hope I hope you are. I read that as
40:29 you're not. Isn't that amazing? Am I?
40:31 Sometimes Vlog Brothers has become too
40:34 self-promotional. A lot of make sure you
40:36 buy this thing. I get that you guys are
40:37 trying to do good in the world. We try
40:40 to balance this and uh and part of how
40:43 we have evolved into balancing it right
40:46 now is having other ways. if there's
40:49 more content being made, if there's more
40:51 stuff that we're doing, then the
40:53 promotions can be more spread out
40:54 between those things. So, if you're
40:56 doing one video a week and one promotion
40:58 a week, then you're doing every video is
41:00 a promotion. But if you're doing two
41:02 videos a week and one promotion a week,
41:03 basically like that. So, Hank's channel
41:05 is a big part of that and the newsletter
41:07 can be part of that. And then like
41:09 making good store into a thing that can
41:11 promote itself, that it can do its own
41:13 marketing and it it doesn't rely just on
41:14 nerd fighteria. And same thing with
41:16 complexity, like it's it's building its
41:20 own way of promoting or or like I'm not
41:22 not Oh, someone's knocking on my door
41:23 again. We have a visitor in the room.
41:25 He's going to play with some rocks that
41:27 I got. Don't be fooled by him, Orin. I'm
41:29 still Hanky from the block. I'm afraid
41:32 for John and his book tour situation.
41:33 Yeah. No, it's a lot. Uh, so this is
41:35 from 2025. I'm worried for the day
41:37 either of you rightfully retire. John
41:40 and I have been talking like we see so
41:43 much in in politics people holding on
41:46 too long and like we are a little bit in
41:48 politics and so I like John and I have
41:51 have talked in in that frame where we
41:54 have been frustrated with people in
41:56 power holding on to that power for too
41:58 long that like we should keep that in
42:01 mind and and you know as we have these
42:04 fears about what the world is like when
42:07 we retire we have to recognize that
42:09 that's part of the way that things work
42:11 and that we have to let go of that.
42:13 Might regret Twitter Tik Tok addiction,
42:15 taking time and energy from family.
42:17 Yeah, that's true. I worry about your
42:18 stress and mental health. I think I'm
42:20 mostly okay. Hanks overwork and John's
42:22 general mental health. Yeah, it's
42:23 tricky. The ones that we've gotten so
42:25 far are like, "Take care of yourselves
42:27 and you're doing a lot of promotion."
42:28 And that's true. Every single vlog where
42:30 this video does not contain a sales
42:32 pitch. I will say maybe there was a time
42:34 when it when it was more like that, but
42:36 it's not like that right now. The other
42:38 thing is how much moving on from the
42:40 4-minute rule has helped with this.
42:41 Because if we're stuck in the 4-minute
42:43 rule, then we have to include the sales
42:44 pitch in the 4 minutes. But if we can
42:46 make a 4-minute long video or a 5m
42:48 minutee long video and then be like,
42:50 "Oh, and by the way, there we've got a
42:52 sale going on a good store." Then that
42:57 doesn't feel as like crunched and people
42:58 are like, "Oh, it's a post roll." That's
43:00 another thing is that I I initially
43:01 didn't do this on Hank's channel and
43:03 people didn't like it. I would just like
43:05 make the pitch. But what that what
43:07 people are to better is when I say this
43:08 video is brought to you by Goodstore.
43:10 Even though I'm not being paid for that,
43:12 it's it's still like kind of true. Like
43:14 maybe I wouldn't be making the video if
43:15 it weren't an opportunity to market
43:17 goods. All right, there isn't much more
43:19 survey left, but I'm not done with it
43:22 all the way and I got to go to uh the
43:24 gym. You'll see me in just a second. All
43:26 right, I got a half an hour and I'm
43:28 going to try and finish it in the half
43:30 an hour that I have. I one know
43:31 absolutely unhinged thing that I just
43:33 said to Katherine. I said, "Whoa, third
43:35 shirt in three days." That's what the
43:38 summer's like in Missoula. So, so now
43:39 you know, one of the ways I save time is
43:43 just not changing clothes. Just wake up
43:44 and go to work in the same clothes I
43:46 went to sleep in. But usually that's
43:48 okay cuz it's not sweaty times, but it's
43:49 currently sweaty times. I've been
43:51 looking through this since I sat down.
43:52 But the negatives of Tik Tok and other
43:54 short form content easily outweigh the
43:55 positives. Therefore, I think it is
43:57 immoral to make content for it. And I
43:59 don't know if that's right. It's a
44:02 conversation that I continue to have.
44:03 It's obviously a conversation that I was
44:05 just having on the Vlog Brothers
44:07 channel. I don't know when this video is
44:08 going to come out, but I was making the
44:10 video about how starved we are for
44:13 information and how like bad we are and
44:17 like is it cigarettes or not? And I feel
44:19 like it's more like food where there's
44:20 good food and bad food. And should there
44:23 be no good food? Should it only be bad
44:24 food? Am I bringing people to these
44:25 platforms when they shouldn't be? I
44:26 don't know. Let's bring back shorter
44:27 videos on blog brothers. This is
44:28 actually something that we have been
44:30 doing like every once in a while. I try
44:31 to get one that's under four minutes. I
44:33 usually miss. It turns out that that
44:35 last bit of work to get it under four
44:37 minutes is is quite a lot of work. We
44:39 always doing a lot of work to cut stuff
44:41 down and oftentimes making the videos
44:43 worse in doing that. Cutting out things
44:46 that I think are funny or important or
44:48 useful. For me, 5 minutes seems to be
44:51 actually a slightly better length than 4
44:53 minutes, but I do try to get under five
44:55 fairly frequently. And when I go longer,
44:57 I like to go like way longer. I don't
44:58 know how John's doing it. Stop having
45:00 cancer so much. Thank you. I did. Only
45:02 that I'm late to the party. Doing this
45:04 this year probably won't get counted in
45:07 your stats. Well, I look at me. I made
45:09 life a little bit easier for you, didn't
45:11 I? Don't be so hard on yourselves. Don't
45:12 forget to take care of yourselves. I
45:13 mean, this is a hard thing. It's a lot
45:15 of responsibility. The sort of work that
45:17 we do, it is a balance. It's a thing
45:18 that that I think we are constantly
45:20 balancing and trying to figure out. I do
45:21 put a lot of pressure on myself, but I
45:22 think that I should put a lot of
45:23 pressure on myself. That doesn't
45:26 necessarily have to be a bad thing. The
45:28 last thing that's on the main census is
45:30 if there's anything you like to say to
45:31 say it, and thank you so much for
45:32 filling out the census. I'm a new fan,
45:33 but I really like your work. Thank you
45:34 for everything you do. I'm just going to
45:36 scroll and like like get us peppering.
45:38 I'm going to see John at at Northwestern
45:41 in a few weeks. I'm excited. I've been
45:42 trying to do connections on hard mode
45:44 like Hank, but it's still too hard for
45:46 me. It is hard. It is hard. I'm not
45:47 going to play Connections at the end of
45:49 this cuz it's already quite a long video
45:50 and we don't need that, do we? Keep up
45:52 the great work. Thank you for your
45:54 stuff. You guys are a positive force. I
45:56 love the census. It's still not a
45:58 census, Hank. I know it's not a census,
46:01 but it's a nice it's a nice word. I' I I
46:02 actually have never heard that feedback,
46:04 but I am aware that it is not officially
46:05 a census. Unfortunately, there is no way
46:07 to do a census of an online community as
46:09 far as I know. Just be like, you can't
46:11 be a part of it anymore unless you fill
46:13 this out. You've got it's the law. John,
46:15 the anthroposine reviewed is by far my
46:17 favorite book. It's so good. It really
46:19 is. John is a special freaking guy.
46:22 Exceptional. and uh trying to write my
46:24 cancer book and try thinking about how
46:27 good John's writing is is very
46:29 inspiring. I'll say it's motivating to
46:31 try and do something really good. I
46:32 don't know where to start. Thank you for
46:33 everything. I've met friends through
46:35 Nerd Fighteria, learned so much from
46:36 Crash Course Eons, laughed with Dear
46:38 Hank and John, and feel generally more
46:40 connected to the world and the people
46:42 around me. That feels great. Thank you
46:43 so much for saying so. You guys are
46:45 awesome. My mom calls you those green
46:47 boys. That's That's funny. When Orin
46:48 listens to the Adventure Zone with us
46:50 and we we say, "Do you want to listen to
46:52 the Mack Boys?" That's what we say. You
46:53 know, a couple of years ago when he was
46:54 little where he would say, "I want to
46:56 listen to Maroy Adventure." I don't get
46:58 involved much, but I spread the word and
47:00 really believe you're too amazing. Thank
47:01 you. That's very sweet. I don't know if
47:03 I'm the target demographic as someone
47:05 who's mostly been tangentially aware, if
47:07 at all, of most things brought up here,
47:10 but I figure you also actually reach
47:12 many people in that situation. Yes.
47:13 Thank you so much for filling out the
47:16 survey. If you are tangentially aware, I
47:17 definitely want to hear from you. That's
47:19 very important. Congrats, Hank and John.
47:22 You should get your famous Tik Tok
47:24 brother to get you a role on Dimension
47:26 20 so you can flirt with Bleam. I don't
47:27 know. I feel like this had already
47:29 happened by that point. Did you not know
47:31 that that I was on dimension 20 and in
47:33 dimen like on camera had my character
47:35 flirt with his with with a character he
47:36 was representing? That's a real thing
47:38 that happened. I listened to every
47:40 episode of Dear Hank and John twice. A
47:42 that's so nice. I love that. We're back,
47:44 man. We're back. We're trying to do it
47:46 every week again. Your work has meant
47:48 the world to me as it has inspired and
47:50 guided me in my studies, my work, and my
47:52 personal life. I'm so grateful to have
47:54 it as a part of this community for over
47:56 15 years. You uh keep being an
47:59 inspiration to do better and do good for
48:01 the world. That is a lot. This so like I
48:02 will say the pressure I put on myself is
48:03 because like we have a lot of
48:05 responsibility. We have a lot of power.
48:06 I wouldn't necessarily put that on
48:08 myself if I had less of those things.
48:10 Just for clarity, the world asks a lot
48:12 of us sometimes. Sometimes I feel like
48:13 way too much. If it's getting you out of
48:15 bed and doing stuff, then I think that
48:17 that's good. If it's feeling like a
48:18 weight that is making you overwhelmed
48:20 and you can't handle it all, I don't
48:22 know, man. I There's a lot of stuff that
48:23 I feel like I should do that I don't do,
48:25 and I try not to feel bad about it. Love
48:26 y'all's channels and all the science
48:28 knowledge and life updates that make
48:31 people feel like they are not alone. It
48:33 would be cool if y'all could do tours.
48:34 We would love to do tours. I was just
48:36 talking to Katherine about it right
48:38 before I came out here. uh we have a lot
48:39 of opport like we could absolutely I
48:41 think that we could book pretty large
48:43 theaters and it would be totally
48:46 worthwhile in terms of you know money uh
48:48 and in terms of like time spent but uh
48:50 very hard to get John and I's schedules
48:52 to overlap to do a tour together and
48:55 very hard to get just time away in
48:56 general. A tour takes a lot of time
48:57 takes a lot of time to plan takes a lot
48:58 of time to actually be on tour. people
49:01 who f who say that they do Patreon, they
49:03 get some special stuff, including some
49:04 extra questions, but also some stuff I
49:06 won't show you as part of the survey.
49:08 Don't lie though, but not just Patreon,
49:10 but also anybody who supported our work
49:11 financially. So, it's just a little
49:13 thank you message that we send. So, what
49:15 do you support on Patreon? We got Dear
49:17 Hang John is our biggest thing. Crash
49:18 Course is second and then Sihow. That
49:21 makes sense. The coin, uh, I did not
49:23 hear about it is very small, SO THAT'S
49:27 GOOD. A LOT of people. Wow. It was a
49:29 thousand people of the, you know, I
49:31 think 20,000 people who filled out the
49:33 survey. Not as much as it looks like,
49:35 but uh a lot of people didn't get one,
49:36 but this is great. This is great numbers
49:37 regardless. Do you plan on keeping up
49:39 your patronage for the next year? No.
49:42 Probably not. Probably definitely.
49:43 Great. Thank you very much. Here's some
49:46 uh what other things do you support on
49:47 Patreon? That's really interesting to
49:49 see. Podcasts. Dang it. I would I was
49:51 hoping to see something more than P.
49:53 It'd be great to see this as a list. Oh,
49:56 I can see it as a list. Podcasts,
49:59 nothing. Artists, creators, worlds
50:01 beyond number. Worlds Beyond Number, CGP
50:04 Gay, Physics Girl, If Books Could Kill,
50:06 Smarter Every Day, Smarter Every Day,
50:09 Content Creators, uh, Maintenance Phase,
50:11 Jenny Nicholson, Technology Connections.
50:14 You guys have the exact same taste as
50:16 me. Like, these are like I did not read
50:19 a single thing that I'm not into on this
50:21 list. Why did you support our work this
50:23 year? Let's see this as a list. Crash
50:25 course support, think, believe, good.
50:27 It's funny. It's like like I'm reading a
50:31 sentence here, but not in in uh like
50:33 semantic order. Also important content,
50:35 good work. Uh help education make world
50:37 people much more world better. All that
50:40 stuff. Hank John want support. Way enjoy
50:43 money learning. Me too. Way enjoy money
50:44 learning. Some of my favorite things.
50:47 And I did it. I have indeed even a
50:49 little bit of time to prep for this call
50:50 that I have to do. I love a great
50:52 lawyer, but I hate needing a great
50:53 lawyer. And this has nothing to do with
50:55 like somebody suing me or anything. This
50:58 is just like uh company things. You
51:01 know, giving money to charity is hard.
51:03 They like the IRS assumes that you're
51:05 trying to dodge tax to just do tax
51:07 dodges somehow. I'm going to wrap it up
51:08 now. As much as there's always way more,
51:10 you could always go deeper, there's
51:11 always more to learn. I really
51:13 appreciate people who take the time to
51:15 fill out the survey. It very much
51:17 informs how I think about the work that
51:19 I do. I know that it very much affects
51:20 the way that John thinks about our work.
51:23 The survey because I feel like the world
51:26 has changed and and my work has changed
51:28 a fair amount in the last year and a
51:30 half. I think the 2025 survey is going
51:31 to be structured a little bit
51:34 differently. I always am fighting to
51:36 make it shorter. I regret when I make it
51:38 shorter, of course, because I lose
51:40 questions and can't compare yeartoear as
51:42 easily. And also things are are going to
51:44 change like the the social internet has
51:45 changed a lot in the last couple years.
51:48 And the I think that the things I'm
51:49 worried about and the things that I'd
51:51 like to see, I've been making more
51:52 political content. It's very hard for me
51:55 to not do that and uh and see how people
51:56 are feeling about that. There's a lot
51:57 that I'd like to learn and so I really
51:59 much very much encourage you to to fill
52:02 that survey out. Thank you for your time
52:04 watching this whole dang video. Wow.
