0:10 it's a procedure by which sperm is
0:12 inserted into the uterus to allow the
0:15 sperm to get closer to the egg to
0:23 conception IUI is a very easy procedure
0:24 to perform it's performed in the office
0:26 patients don't require any medication or
0:29 anesthesia it's very similar to having
0:31 an annual EX with a path smear the first
0:33 step is placement of a speculum so that
0:35 the provider can see the cervix or
0:37 visualize the cervix this is one of the
0:40 actual catheters that we use for the IUI
0:43 procedure it's very tiny and it's soft
0:46 and flexible and the sperm sample is
0:49 drawn up into the catheter it's a very
0:52 small volume and then it's gently
0:55 inserted into the uterus and the sperm
0:57 is placed at the top of the uterus close
1:00 to the openings of the tubes
1:02 and then the catheter is removed it only
1:05 takes a few minutes and it's a pretty
1:07 comfortable and easy procedure the risks
1:09 of IUI are very very minimal
1:10 occasionally patients will have very
1:13 mild cramping or a tiny bit of spotting
1:15 after the procedure but complications
1:17 such as infection are very rare less than
1:24 1% II can be used in different
1:26 situations it may be recommended for
1:28 different diagnoses or different
1:31 clinical situations or conditions but
1:33 it's most commonly used in younger
1:35 patients who have open or payent
1:37 Fallopian tubes in cases of unexplained
1:40 infertility and in cases of mild Mill
1:41 Factor infertility but it can be used
1:43 for other indications as well for
1:46 example sometimes patients are taking
1:47 medication to boost their ovulation
1:50 ovulation induction medications and some
1:52 of those patients will also pair that
2:00 IUI insurance coverage really varies
2:02 some providers cover the procedure a
2:04 limited number of times While others
2:06 provide more coverage so it really
2:08 depends upon the patients insurance
