0:02 hello everyone today we're going to be
0:04 showing you how to teach reading with
0:07 magnetic letters this is such a fun and
0:09 interactive way and your children will
0:10 love it
0:11 and so i have these magnetic letters
0:14 that have these vowels in red and it
0:16 really helps with reading because they
0:18 can elongate those vowels i'm going to
0:20 be linking this below in the description
0:22 box so it's a really fun and easy way to
0:24 teach reading we're going to be showing
0:25 you in this video i'm going to be
0:27 bringing the kids in we'll be showing
0:29 you how to start with just
0:32 letter by letter and then there will be
0:34 moving on to two letter words three
0:36 letter words uh we're going to be
0:39 talking about how to introduce uh the
0:42 silent e sounds the long vowels
0:44 and finally how to read full sentences
0:48 with these magnetic letters so without
0:49 further ado let me bring you guys a
0:51 little closer and let's start right from
0:54 the beginning with just single letters
0:56 let's go
0:58 so you want to start by laying a few
1:00 letters at a time
1:01 and if they're doing this for the first
1:03 time and they don't know their sounds
1:06 they're just going to repeat with you
1:09 letter by letter the sounds you're going
1:12 to use the short vowel sounds first if
1:13 you don't know the short vowel sounds
1:15 i'll link a video below where i go over
1:17 each letter sound you're going to
1:19 continue this until you have
1:21 learned the entire alphabet
1:23 once a child has learned the entire
1:25 alphabet you want to go ahead and have
1:26 them do it on their own and tell you the
2:17 what about this one
2:24 ah very good the next step is
2:27 two letter blends and you will be going
2:31 to be blending consonants and vowels
2:33 so emily you ready to get started make
2:35 sure you elongate all of the vowels make
2:38 them sound long okay ready let's start
2:40 with the top go ahead and point as you read
3:07 very good so you're going to be
3:09 practicing this with a child
3:10 giving them different consonants and
3:12 different vowels and having them elongate
3:13 elongate
3:14 the vowels
3:17 now what i'm going to do is i'm going to
3:18 give emily
3:20 three letter words i'm just going to be
3:21 adding t's to this
3:23 now this is
3:26 the word family at
3:28 so you want to keep it within word
3:29 families when you're starting out as you
3:32 can see all of these end in at so
3:34 so
3:36 the child is going to now be reading
3:38 three letter words which is the next
3:40 step once they have mastered
3:42 the two letter blends you move on to three
3:44 three
3:45 letter words
3:46 now emily we're going to be doing the
3:49 same thing but now you're going to be
3:50 elongating the a
3:53 and reading the whole thing ready go
3:55 ahead and get started okay
4:16 cat
4:18 very good
4:20 so when you're doing the blends the child
4:21 child
4:24 might not be able to hear
4:25 hear
4:27 the word that is being read yet so you
4:29 have when you have them elongate the
4:31 vowels which are in red
4:33 with this particular set which i'm going
4:35 to be linking below they're going to be
4:37 able to hear the word sad
4:40 sad set
4:42 set rat
4:44 rat
4:47 rat you want them to almost like sing it
4:50 to you and that's how we do the blends
4:54 now we're going to move on to long vowel sounds
4:55 sounds
5:03 all right so now we are going to be
5:04 working on
5:08 the long vowel sounds so the long vowels
5:10 emily they say their name
5:13 so for example this isn't a vowel that
5:16 normally sounds like a right
5:19 yeah but now it's gonna sound like a
5:21 it's going to say its name can we say that
5:22 that
5:26 a now this is how this works this is a
5:29 silent e and the reason is silent emily
5:32 is because you have two vowels and a
5:35 consonant in between whenever you have
5:37 two vowels and only one consonant in between
5:39 between
5:42 that is going to make the silent e
5:44 and you're going to be using the long
5:47 vowel sound so let's go ahead and read
5:50 this using our long vowel sound
5:52 so remember the letter is saying its
5:54 name let's start with the first one over
5:55 here at the top go ahead and point and
5:57 read as you go nice and loud
6:00 good eight
6:07 eight kate
6:08 kate
6:14 great
6:22 very good and i like how you're keeping
6:24 the e silent because the e has to be
6:26 silent in this case
6:28 so you just continue working with a
6:29 child giving them different
6:30 different
6:33 long vowel sounds to practice their long vowels
6:34 vowels
6:38 now we're going to move on to sentences
6:40 all right emily so now i've given you
6:42 three sentences some of them have the
6:44 long vowel sounds and some of them have
6:46 the short vowel sounds let's see if you
6:49 can remember our silent e rule okay
6:52 so i want you to point to each
6:55 of the letters and sound and remember to
6:57 elongate the ones that are red okay so
7:00 that you can read good start with the
7:08 at cat
7:13 and ran
7:19 asked
7:21 fast okay let's read the whole sentence
7:24 together now all together the
7:25 the cat
7:26 cat
7:28 ran fast
7:30 good let's go to the next
7:34 sentence nice and loud for our friends
7:36 now when we're saying the the for those
7:38 friends watching
7:40 we go ah
7:42 ah
8:01 read the whole sentence the
8:04 fox set good
8:06 now the last one go ahead and read it first
8:25 okay read the whole sentence now the kite
8:26 kite is
8:28 is red
8:29 red
8:31 now when you're first starting off with
8:32 your kids just pay attention that
8:34 they're going to be sounding a lot more
8:36 choppier than emily has emily is a
8:38 fluent reader now so i'm just going to
8:41 be demonstrating with her but
8:43 when your kids first start out it's
8:47 so it's going to sound a little
8:49 different and you're going to want them
8:56 like if they're singing a song and
8:57 and
9:00 rant so they can hear it fox
9:02 fox
9:05 now these red vowels really do help
9:08 because i tell them to elongate the red
9:11 letters which are the vowels alright so
9:12 we hope that you have enjoyed this video
9:14 on how to teach reading with magnetic
9:17 letters such an easy way to teach
9:19 reading and to incorporate into your
9:21 reading programs so just know that in
9:23 this video emily has been reading for a
9:25 while so she's a fluent reader but when
9:27 you first start to read when your
9:29 children first start to read they're
9:30 going to sound choppy it's going to
9:35 and it's going to sound like that and so
9:38 don't be discouraged because the
9:41 blending process is actually the hardest
9:43 part of reading when you focus on
9:45 elongating those vowels it is really
9:48 going to help them and it's the constant
9:50 practice of blending
9:52 every day that is going to finally click
9:54 for them and it's going to happen
9:56 eventually it will happen for them at
9:58 first you want to help them through this process
10:00 process
10:02 as they learn the blends we hope that
10:04 you have enjoyed the video we'll link
10:06 these letters below and if you want to
10:09 see a whole tutorial on reading with
10:12 flashcards another uh method that we
10:14 also used here that we taught other kids
10:16 to read by three i'll link that video
10:19 below in the description box i will see
