The Ford Territory is Ford's strategic response to the rise of Chinese manufacturers, aiming to offer a feature-rich, competitively priced SUV by partnering with Jiangling Motors, while balancing traditional brand expectations with market demands.

today. We have the Ford territory with
us. Now, this is Ford's attempt to beat
Chinese manufacturers. You see, since
the late 2010s, buyers started
gravitating towards Chinese brands
because of their featurerich products
that were priced at levels that were
almost unbeatable. and legacy
manufacturers did everything in their
power to compete with them. But it often
meant that they were eating into their
margins. So Ford realized that the best
way to beat them is to join them. So
they teamed up with their partner in
China, the Jangling Motors Corporation,
and launched this. You see, on paper,
this is the perfect solution. It's an
aggressively priced SUV that offers a
whole lot of features and comes with the
same practicality that people expect
from the brand. However, this badge
carries a long history. And with that
comes expectations of reliability and
trust. And often times when
manufacturers step out of their comfort
zone in a rush to adapt, that's the
first thing that takes a hit. So, did
Ford sell it soul to the devil with the
>> Now, the first thing I want to talk
about is how Ford has managed to give
every model in their lineup a distinct
styling. You see, now we live in a time
when manufacturers tend to lean heavily
on a design language, which is why you
find that all their models look about
the same with just a difference in their
size. But Ford, on the other hand, has
not done that. Case in point, the Ford
Teret tree.
[music] You see the territory looks very
sleek from all angles.
Starting off, you have a sloping hood
that ends with a very angular design for
the nose. Over here, you can find a
honeycomb mesh design for the grill,
which is finished in dual tone chrome
and black finish. Over on the sides, you
have L-shaped LED DRLs, which sits above
the LED headlamps, which also feature a
follow me home function as standard.
Over on the sides, you have 18-in alloy
wheels, which gets a dual tone finish,
which are shot by GT tires. Moving
further back, you have bodycoled rear
wheel mirrors with integrated turn
signals, a strong shoulder line that
runs all the way to the back, and a
slightly sloping roof at the top, which
gives a bit of sportiness to the design.
In terms of dimensions, the Ford Tra is
4.6 m long, 1.7 m tall, 1.9 m wide, and
gets a ground clearance of 190 mm. Now,
moving over to the rear, you have LED
tail lamps that has a design that seems
to be loosely inspired by the Mustang.
Over in the center, you have Ford's new
3D logo, which by the way can also be
found in the front. And below it, you
have the Territory badging. And that's
about it. It's a very minimalist design.
See, overall, it strikes a balance
between style and practicality without
being too loud. Now, if you think that
the Territory is big on the outside,
>> So once you sat inside the car, the
first thing you would notice is how airy
the interior feels. And that's thanks
primarily to these large windscreens and
these thin A-pillars. So when you're
driving, your vision is not really
blocked, which is what you want in an
SUV, isn't it? So the dashboard gets a
full leather finish at the top and a
pseudo leather finish at the bottom. You
also get brushed aluminum finish beneath
the AC WS and some other places of the
dashboard lining as well. So overall the
interior does feel quite premium. Now
this brings us to the key point. See the
model that we are testing now is not the
top-of-the-line variant like we usually
do. So, you do miss out on quite a lot
of features which include a sunroof, uh,
auto headlamps, wireless charging, a
12.3 in instrument cluster, and much
more. We'll list down the features list
for you to compare on the screen right
now. Now, let's talk about what are the
features that you get with this trim.
Now, the list starts off with this dual
screen setup, which includes a 7-in
instrument cluster on the left and a
12-in infotainment system on your right.
Now again, since it's a midyear model,
you don't get the 12.3 in liquid
instrument cluster like Ford likes to
call it. What you get is a basic
instrument cluster which gives you all
the basic information. The infotainment
system, however, gets features like
wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto,
which is quite commendable considering
that it is a base model. Now, when it
comes to the infotainment system, there
are a couple of things that I want to
talk about. The first thing is that when
you adjust the temperature control in
about 5 to 6 seconds it goes back to the
maps or whatever you've been using
before which is not a feature that you
find even in higherend cars. You see the
infotainment system is quite good but
the thing is it stretches quite wide and
it becomes a little inconvenient when
you're driving and you want to reach
something on the other side of the
screen. Say for example when you're on
maps. So that I think becomes a bit of a
problem when you're driving. Now moving
back to the rest of the interior, you
find a full leather finish for the
steering wheel where you can also find
controls for your media on your right
side and cruise control which again
considering that it is a base model, it
is quite commendable that Ford offers
cruise control in this variant. Now in
the middle you get a floating center
console with temperature control buttons
on the top which again is quite
commendable because nowadays most of the
cars have it integrated into the
infotainment system which becomes
inconvenient when you're driving. But on
this car, it is moved separately, which
makes it a lot more convenient,
especially when you're driving. Moving
further back, you get a rotating gear
knob, electronic parking brake with auto
hold and auto start stop function
buttons behind it. And you also get
media buttons on the further end. And on
the right side, you get a concealed
chamber where you can hold your cups or
even a 500 ml bottle like such. At the
extreme back, you get a cubby holder
which is not cooled. And on top of that,
you also get a moving tray. Below the
floating center console, you also have
more storage space where you can hold
diaries or even a handbag. Here you can
also find two USB ports. One is a USBA
port and the other is a USBC port. Now
when it comes to the seats, you get
leather across all trims, but the base
models you get pseudo leather and only
the top end titanium variants and even
the dark variants, which is not
available in UA at the moment, gets
leather finish. Up top, you also get
controls to your interior lighting as
well as storage for your sunglasses.
Now, when it comes to the door pads, you
get a dual tone finish with leather near
the window switches. And below that, you
can find space to store bottles or other
accessories. But unfortunately, even
though it might store a traditional 500
ml bottle, but if you have a wide
bottle, it is not too easy for it to fit
in there. And that's pretty much it when
it comes to the front end. Now, let's
move back to the rear seats and see how
they fair.
When you sit in the back seat, this is
where you realize how much space is
offered in the Ford territory. See, with
the driver seat adjusted to my driving
position, I have enough legroom and I
can also stretch my legs to make myself
a bit more comfortable. In terms of
practicality, you get two AC vents, two
USBC charging ports. Unfortunately, you
can't adjust the AC vents from here. You
also get storage behind the front seats and
and
a door cubby wide enough to hold even a
wide 500 ml bottle. You can also make
yourself a little bit more comfortable
thanks to these retracting rear armrests
and these headrests are also pretty
supportive which also reminds me at the
front the headrests are quite supportive
as well which I found to be better than
most high-end models. Coming back to the
rear seats the seats are comfortable on
its own so I'm assuming long drives
would not be a problem. When it comes to
the material, it's the same material as
you get in the front seats, which is
pseudo leather. And you also get a dual
tone finish here as well. When it comes
to safety features, the car comes with
six airbags as standard. And you also
get two ISOIX anchors at the rear seats
as well. Now, let's try and see how big
the boot is. Now, this is where the
practicality side of the 43 reaches its
height. Because when you open the
non-automatic tailgate, which is again
non-automatic because it's a midyear
model, you get 448 L of space, which can
be expanded up to 1,422 L by folding
down the rear seats, which in my opinion
is more than sufficient for an average
Jeep. So that's a bold tick mark in
terms of practicality for the 43. [music]
>> Now, if you're a person like me who
judges a car just by the way it drives,
then you've come to the right place.
Let's start with the engine. Here in the
UAE, the Territory is offered with
either a hybrid powertrain or a pure
petrol version. Neither of them come
with a 4x4 or an all-wheel drive
version. The Territory is only offered
with a front-wheel drive configuration,
and that I think is primarily to give
better fuel efficiency. Now, the hybrid
version comes with a 1.5 L petrol engine
that's paired with a 64 kWh battery
pack. Combined, it produces 241
horsepower and a monstrous 545 Nm of
torque. Now, Ford claims that the hybrid
version can get up to 23 km of fuel
efficiency. So, it sounds like the
perfect SUV for people like us who
battle with bumper-to-bumper traffic on
a daily basis. Having said that, the
model we have on test is the pure petrol
version. This SUV produces 190
horsepower and 235 Nm of torque. Ford
claims that this version can return up
to 15 km in fuel efficiency. Now, when
you compare it to its rivals, it's
slightly better than the Chinese rival,
the GD Starray. It's about the same as
the Nissan X-Trail and a whole lot more
better than the Toyota RAF. However, you
can also opt for the hybrid version if
fuel efficiency is at the top of your
priority list. But again, you'll have to
pay a premium of about 15,000 dirhams
for it. Now, let's stop beating around
the bush and get straight to the point
of how this car drives.
See, right from the get- go, the
tertiary is very smooth. The 7-speed DCD
transmission makes gear shifts feel
effortless, and the suspension is soft
enough to soak up all the rough patches
on the roads. And the electronic
steering wheel is light to make the car
feel nimble in the city, and it stiffens
up on the highways, so you get better
control when you're cruising on higher
speeds. when it comes to acceleration.
Well, why don't we take a quick pause
and test it out for ourselves?
For that, we go into the vehicle settings,
vehicle safety, and switch the drive
mode to sport.
Now, since it's a Midia model, it
doesn't really have a launch control,
per se, so we'll just have to do it
manually. So, we press the brake as well
as the accelerator, wait for a couple of
All right, that was 100.
So, though the company claims that it
can do a 0 to 100 sprint in about 8 and
1/2 seconds, we've just timed it to be
more than 10 seconds. And when we tried
to accelerate,
the car felt hesitant to do it. It
really didn't feel at home doing all
that testing, you know. So, that kind of demonstrates
