0:03 Imagine Bob. He's a father of two and a
0:05 loving husband who is trying to improve
0:07 his life. He likes black tea and his
0:09 favorite fragrance is bulgarian. What do
0:11 you think is the worst thing that can
0:13 happen to Bob? What is the most painful
0:17 torture someone can be put through?
0:20 For sis, let's take his arms and legs,
0:22 shorten them, and stitch them back on
0:25 but in each other's place. Then let's
0:27 surgically move his jaw further forward
0:29 and change the shape of his ears.
0:32 Lastly, we will implant hair all over
0:34 his body and put him in his new home and
0:35 we're done.
0:38 Bob can still think. He can remember who
0:40 he used to be. But is he a still human
0:43 living like this? Cruel, wasn't it? This
0:45 is loss of humanity, the most disturbing
0:48 form of horror. In this video, we're
0:50 going to talk about six pieces of media
0:52 that use loss of humanity, starting from
0:54 the least disturbing and ending with the
0:57 most. What makes loss of humanity so
0:59 effective is that it's one step even
1:01 worse than what we see as the worst
1:02 thing that can happen to a person which
1:05 is death. This subjuna of horror is
1:07 extremely rare because to make one you
1:09 really have to be sick in the head. It
1:10 is not something a sane individual can
1:12 come up with. So when a normal person
1:14 sees it, it disturbs their psyche to no
1:17 end. So I need to warn you now that the
1:18 things we are going to talk about in
1:21 this video are really dark. There are
1:23 also spoilers, so be warned. Here are my
1:25 criteria for what counts as loss of
1:27 humanity in horror. It has to be forced
1:29 on the character. It should result in
1:31 physical alterations. Basically, body
1:33 horror. The subject should not be able
1:35 to easily go back to who they were.
1:37 Lastly, the subject should not be able
1:39 to end their own suffering. Before we
1:41 begin, let me give you some honorable
1:43 mentions that didn't make the list for
1:45 one reason or another. Metamorphosis by
1:47 France Kafka. Season 4, episode 1 of
1:50 Black Mirror. Full Metal Alchemist. The
1:52 human centipede. Now, let's not waste
1:55 any more time and get right into it.
1:56 Starting with the least disturbing,

2:04 the 2014 movie Tusk is a dark comedy
2:06 with some horror aspects. The
2:07 combination of comedy and horror is not
2:09 anything new, but what differentiates
2:12 Tusk from the others is that it takes an
2:14 extremely disturbing and unexpected turn
2:16 when it comes to its horror. A podcaster
2:18 goes to an old man's house to interview
2:19 him about his crazy life. for his
2:21 podcast called The Nazi. That's not
2:23 important. While in the old man's house,
2:25 he gets drugged and amputated. That was
2:26 only the beginning of his
2:28 transformation. Then his body is
2:30 modified to better fit the role of a
2:33 wolver, a human walrus. There's a very
2:35 fine line between comedy and horror, and
2:36 this movie walks on that line
2:38 masterfully. The idea of a man being
2:40 turned into a walrus is funny. It's
2:42 comedy. But when you think about how
2:44 something like that could be done, you
2:46 start to realize how horrifying it
2:48 actually is. It's bringing cartoon
2:50 physics into the real world. Imagine how
2:52 terrifying Tom and Jerry would be in
2:54 real life. That's what Tusk is. Just
2:56 imagine having all of your rights taken
2:58 away from you like that. What keeps this
2:59 movie from reaching its full horror
3:01 potential is that it doesn't take itself
3:03 too seriously. But that's also what I
3:05 like about it. It's a stupid movie and
3:07 it knows it. It doesn't take anything
3:10 away from how disturbing it is. But see,
3:12 when it comes to loss of humanity, this
3:15 is only the beginning. [Music]

3:19 Look at all these cute characters. Look
3:21 how beautiful the art is. You know what
3:23 else has cute characters? Happy
3:25 reference. This is the abyss and it
3:28 holds many mysteries. For example, how
3:30 deep is it? Why can some of the
3:32 creatures that live there only be found
3:34 there? Where did the weird objects and
3:35 technologies found in the abyss come
3:37 from? There are some reasons why these
3:39 mysteries have not been solved yet. The
3:41 dangerous environment of the abyss and
3:43 the creatures that want to kill you. But
3:44 the main reason why it is still so
3:48 unknown is the curse of the abyss. You
3:50 can go down, but if you do, you can no
3:53 longer come back up. At least not if you
3:55 go past the sixth layer. If you try to
3:56 ascend from the first layer to the
3:58 surface, the symptoms will be light
4:00 dizziness and nausea. From the second
4:02 layer to the first, heavy nausea,
4:04 headache, and numbness of limbs. From
4:06 the fourth layer to the third, intense
4:08 pain throughout the body and bleeding
4:10 from every orifice. And most importantly
4:12 for this video, the symptoms for
4:14 ascending from the sixth layer of the
4:17 abyss to the layer above are loss of
4:22 humanity and if you're lucky, death.
4:24 This manga starts off very cute. The
4:25 characters are funny and full of
4:27 childish joy. You start reading it and
4:29 very quickly you find a connection with
4:31 the characters, especially the main
4:34 character, Rico. She and her friend Rake
4:36 decide to go into the abyss. So far, the
4:38 story has been very fun and whimsical.
4:39 You think you know where the story is
4:41 going. You're three volumes into the 10
4:43 plus volume manga and Rico and Rake are
4:45 fighting against one of the dangerous
4:47 monsters in the abyss. But Rake being
4:49 the awesome kid he is is pushing the
4:57 That monster is venomous. Having no
4:59 other way, Rake picks Ro up and escapes.
5:01 But they are in the fourth layer of the
5:04 abyss. So now Riko is in excruciating
5:06 pain and is bleeding from every orifice.
5:07 The cured character you want nothing but
5:10 happiness for is dying and her friend
5:12 has to cut his swollen hand to stop the
5:13 poison from reaching the rest of her
5:15 body. This is when you realize this
5:17 manga is not what you expected. It was
5:19 giving you a false sense of security.
5:21 I'm not going to talk about the loss of
5:23 humanity aspect of this manga because
5:24 it's a huge spoiler and I want you to
5:26 feel the pain I felt the first time I
5:27 read it. Made in Abyss is really
5:29 immersive. It gives you extra
5:31 information between chapters which makes
5:32 it feel all the more alive. It also
5:34 makes you fall in love with some
5:36 characters just so it hurts more when
5:39 bad things happen to them. So just know
5:43 this manga is cruel. Very cruel. [Music]
5:46 [Music]
5:48 Depending on who you ask, this one might
5:49 be a lot more disturbing than any other
5:51 example of loss of humanity we talk
5:53 about in this video, despite being only
5:55 8 minutes long. The reason for that is
5:58 simple, realism. When you watch Final
6:00 Surgery 2.0, So you can imagine
6:01 something like that happening in real
6:03 life. I would say something like this
6:05 has probably already happened at least
6:07 once somewhere in the world. This short
6:09 doesn't pull any punches. It goes as far
6:12 as it can. In concept, it's very close
6:14 to Tusk. In Tusk, a person gets turned
6:17 into a walrus. Here, a kid gets turned
6:19 into a rabbit, but here it's as
6:22 disturbing as it can be, unlike in Tusk,
6:24 which is more comedy. However, at some
6:27 points, it gets too cartoonishly evil.
6:29 Since it's only 8 minutes long,
6:30 available on YouTube, and too graphic
6:32 for me to describe here, I'm just going
6:34 to refer you to watch the actual thing
6:36 if you're interested after you finish
6:38 this video. Of course, it is so edgy and
6:40 kind of artsy, but it's also an
6:42 excellent example of this sub genre of her.
6:44 her. [Music]

6:48 Both the slug girl and the snail, which
6:50 is a chapter of Uzumaki, are the works
6:53 of the master of horror, Junito.
6:54 Yeah, I couldn't go more than two videos
6:56 without talking about him. Also both of
6:57 them are about people turning into
6:59 snails. I think it has a very specific
7:01 phobia of a snails. Considering there
7:03 are other instances of a snail and slug
7:05 horror in his works, both of them are
7:07 similar in concept, but since I find the
7:09 snail to be more horrific, let's only
7:16 It's raining, which means Kadma will
7:19 come to school today. It's weird because
7:20 even though he only comes to school on
7:23 rainy days, he never uses an umbrella.
7:26 He's also always late. Other kids bully
7:28 him for being so slow. Even though it's
7:30 been weird, it only became concerning
7:32 when it was revealed that there's a
7:34 spiral shape growing on his back. I'm
7:43 It's even worse. The spiral has become bigger.
7:56 Kotama opens the door and slides in.
7:58 Today he was unable to wear his usual
8:00 clothes. His legs have started to fuse
8:02 together and his front has become
8:04 flatter to better suit his new way of moving.
8:06 moving.
8:09 It's raining, but Kama is not in class.
8:12 He's right outside of it. His body is
8:14 90% done with his metamorphosis. The
8:17 arms and legs are gone, and his face now
8:19 resembles a snail. His parents refused
8:21 to accept that thing as their son. So
8:23 the school decides to build the cage and
8:25 take care of it. Considering both
8:27 Kayyama and another classmate who faced
8:29 the same fate still came to school, we
8:31 can conclude that they probably can
8:32 still remember and think like they used
8:35 to, at least to some degree. If you're
8:38 curious, this is how a slug girl ends.
8:40 Still a human turning into a snail, but
8:42 in a different way. [Music]

8:46 In the cruel world of all tomorrows, we
8:48 find some of the best examples of loss
8:50 of humanity.
8:51 While this book is filled with this
8:54 subgenre, from warm people and parasites
8:57 to hedonists and lopsiders, one stands
8:59 out the most. A fate worse than having
9:01 all of your senses and limbs taken away
9:03 from you like in Final Surgery. Worse
9:05 than being turned into a viral, like in
9:07 Tusk, and even worse than being trapped
9:09 into the body of a snail. There's a high
9:11 chance you already know about this book,
9:13 but just in case you don't, let me give
9:15 you a simplified explanation. A really
9:17 smart group of aliens called the Q
9:19 decided to attack humans. Most of the
9:21 humans were defeated easily, but one
9:23 group fought against them and even
9:24 pushed them back a little. Therefore,
9:26 when the Q won, they decided to punish
9:29 them and make an example of them. The Q
9:31 with their three sets of justice wanted
9:34 to make them pay. Even extinction would
9:36 be too light a punishment for resisting
9:38 their star gods. The humans of the rogue
9:39 world needed a sentence that would
9:41 remind them of their humiliation for
9:43 generations to come. And that punishment
9:46 is the only thing I will always remember
9:48 from this book. The cure turned those
9:50 people into living blocks of waste
9:52 filtering devices. Their eyes were left
9:54 unchanged to witness what they became
9:56 and their consciousness was retained so
9:58 they could suffer every second of their
10:01 existence. Unable to move, talk or do
10:12 See, it's torture even for just 5
10:16 seconds. But you know what's even worse? [Music]
10:18 [Music]
10:20 I have watched a lot of movies and read
10:22 a lot of books and many of them were
10:25 horror. But to this day, what happened
10:27 to Ted at the end of I Have No Mouth and
10:29 I Must Scream is the single most
10:31 disturbing thing I've seen happen to a
10:34 fictional character. What am does to him
10:36 is the ultimate torture. Humans built an
10:39 AI. They gave it sentience. They didn't
10:42 mean to, but it happened. That AI who
10:45 called himself AM was trapped. Humans
10:47 built AM to think, but there was nothing
10:49 it could do with all that creativity and
10:51 was born in a world too limiting for
10:54 him. In a rage, AM killed all of the
10:56 human race except for five people. But
10:58 he was still trapped. He couldn't
11:01 wander. He couldn't belong. So AM
11:03 decides to take his revenge for the life
11:05 it was given. That's when those five
11:07 people came in handy. They became all AM
11:10 had to do with his time forever. His
11:12 only choice. AM with his infinite
11:14 knowledge was able to keep them alive
11:16 for hundreds and thousands of years.
11:18 Just so it could torture them in
11:20 different ways. Every decision am makes
11:23 meant to cause pain. Pain to those five
11:25 people. No matter what he did to them,
11:27 he was able to heal them. As long as
11:29 they stayed alive and couldn't bring
11:31 back the dead. He's not God. So just
11:33 imagine what happens when one of those
11:35 five people decides to free the other
11:38 four by killing them. Now AM has lost
11:40 all his toys except for one, the one
11:43 that took them away from him. AM made
11:45 sure Ted would suffer eternally and
11:47 could not end his own pain. He doesn't
11:48 want Ted to run full speed into a
11:51 computer and smash his skull or hold his
11:53 breath until he faints. So he altered
11:57 his body. Now he's a soft jelly-like
11:59 thing, smoothly rounded with no mouth
12:01 and pulsing white holes filled with fog
12:03 where his eyes used to be. His arms and
12:05 legs were also altered, if you could
12:07 call those humps of soft slippery matter
12:10 legs. He leaves a moist trail when he
12:12 moves. His mind was left intact so he
12:14 could dream and remember. His sense of
12:17 time has also been altered. Sometimes it
12:20 takes him 10 months to say the word now.
12:21 A thing that could never have been known
12:26 as human. Human. human.
12:28 I'm sure there are other examples of
12:30 loss of humanity in different media as
12:31 well. I can only imagine what great
12:33 examples exist in the world of gaming.
12:35 But that was every instance of loss of
12:37 humanity I have. Now it's your turn to
12:39 introduce me to something new. I love
12:41 this sub genre and it would be great to
12:44 see more of it. Anyway, that's it for
12:45 now. I hope you were introduced to
12:47 something new in this video. If you
