0:03 sure my pal howdy everyone and recently
0:06 an interesting new low-budget lens has
0:08 found its way all the way from China to
0:11 my office the young no 50 millimeter F
0:14 one point eight mark - at the moment
0:17 this mark - version is just for Canon
0:20 digital SLR cameras full frame or aps-c
0:23 as usual feta lens for digital SLR
0:26 cameras you can also adapt it onto
0:28 Millis cameras with the right adapter in
0:32 common with our original copycat 50
0:34 millimeter lens which I reviewed a few
0:37 years ago this new edition is obviously
0:40 a low-budget competitor against canons
0:42 50 millimeter F one point eight lenses
0:45 the most recent of which the Canon 50
0:48 millimeter F one point eight STM is
0:50 about a hundred and twenty dollars in
0:52 the US or just over a hundred pounds in
0:55 the UK well this new young mode
0:59 competitor comes in at $75 or only about
1:02 sixty pounds in the UK so a little under
1:04 two-thirds of the price a significant
1:06 saving if you're on a very tight budget
1:09 you'll know what a fast aperture 50
1:11 millimeter lens does by now there's a
1:13 reason that the most popular prime
1:15 lenses on the market they're small and
1:17 inexpensive they give you a bright
1:20 maximum aperture in order to let you
1:22 shoot and darker conditions and get
1:24 artistic looking autofocus backgrounds
1:27 and the 50 millimeter focal length is
1:30 versatile on a full frame camera 50
1:33 millimeter is neither a wide angle nor
1:35 telephoto focal length it gives you a
1:37 good emphasis on your subject while
1:39 still offering some background and
1:41 enough field of view to get the whole
1:44 picture in if you're using a crop sensor
1:47 aps-c camera then your pictures will be
1:50 the full-frame equivalent of 75 or 18
1:52 millimeter that's a short telephoto
1:54 field of view for tighter shots and
1:57 portrait pictures the equivalent depth
1:59 of field in your pictures will be more
2:02 like F 2.8 on a crop sensor camera still
2:04 good for some interesting subject
2:07 isolation let's look at a build quality
2:09 then it's a nice improvement of a young
2:12 those original 50 millimeter F 1 point 8
2:14 lens they've gone for their own style of
2:17 body here instead of ripping off canons
2:19 design and it looks a lot nicer as a
2:22 result this newer lens is little fatter
2:24 than you might expect with a 58
2:27 millimeter filter thread but it feels a
2:30 lot more solid there's even a metal lens
2:32 mount out of the box and it has a
2:35 protective film over the glass elements
2:37 don't forget to take those off obviously
2:40 there's no weather sealing avanced the
2:43 mount though in fact young no are at
2:45 pains to point out in the manual that
2:47 you definitely should not get this lens
2:51 wet otherwise it may cause unlikely to
2:54 repair on this new lens the focus ring
2:56 is marked with a distance scale rather
2:59 handy in manual focus mode it turns
3:02 quite smoothly enough to manually focus
3:04 without too much trouble the front
3:07 element does not rotate as you change
3:09 focus which is helpful if you're using a
3:13 polarizing or graduated filter autofocus
3:16 mode is activated with a switch do not
3:18 turn the focus ring while you're in
3:20 autofocus mode you might damage the
3:24 lenses mechanism now then autofocus here
3:33 the autofocus is a little slower than
3:36 other 50 millimeter lenses including
3:37 young nose original 50 millimeter lens
3:40 although the new lens does have a longer
3:43 focus range to cover it makes a whirring
3:45 noise as it goes but it's definitely
3:48 quieter than the old version on my copy
3:50 of the lens I needed to make quite a
3:53 major auto focus micro adjustment on my
3:55 Canon 6d for it to get my pictures in
3:59 focus through the viewfinder +12 one
4:02 side micro just did they it focused
4:05 consistently so I was happy the lens
4:07 will auto focus accurately if you're
4:10 shooting in Live View mode - although
4:12 it'll be a little unsure of itself
4:15 sometimes focus hunting the lens's
4:18 aperture mechanism has seven iris blades
4:20 for smoother autofocus backgrounds when
4:22 the aperture is topped down an
4:25 improvement over the previous model is
4:28 that this mark - version can focus down
4:31 to you 35 centimeters just like cannons
4:34 latest 50 millimeter F 1 point 8 STM
4:37 lens it won't be mistaken for a macro
4:39 lens by any means but that's still
4:41 really handy for getting closer shot of
4:44 smaller subject it comes with the usual
4:48 lens caps but no lens hood over all the
4:50 lenses build quality is quite nice and
4:53 it works very well just bear in mind
4:55 that you may need to micro adjust the
4:58 autofocus on your camera for accurate
5:00 shot through the viewfinder and not
5:03 every digital SLR has micro adjustment
5:07 as a feature so be warned your modu
5:09 mention in our publicity that the lenses
5:11 firmware can be upgraded through your
5:14 camera somehow don't ask me how you do
5:16 that though there's nothing in the
5:19 lenses manual about it although image
5:21 quality the original version of this
5:24 young no optic was a little softer than
5:26 canons own brand 50 millimeter F 1 point
5:29 8 lens so I wonder how this new version
5:31 performs we'll start on a full frame
5:36 camera my old 20 megapixel Canon 6d in
5:39 the middle of the image at F 1.8 the
5:41 lenses pretty nice and sharp
5:44 perfect but pretty good contrast is a
5:46 little low @f 1.8 and there's a slight
5:50 red color tint to your images over inner
5:52 corners contrast and resolution are
5:55 fairly soft stop down to F 2.8 for a
5:58 punchy er image up there but it's still
6:00 hardly a sharp one the middle of the
6:03 image is really sharp now they stop down
6:06 again to f4 for about the same in the
6:08 middle but now the corners of the image
6:10 are decently sharp they're excellent at
6:15 F 5.6 f/8 and f/11
6:19 f-16 and f-22 are softer though due to
6:22 the effect of diffraction of all the
6:24 lens performs about the same as its
6:26 predecessor sharp in the middle and
6:30 sharp in the corners from about f4 bear
6:32 in mind though the more expensive Canon
6:34 version of this lens is sharp in its
6:38 corners from only F 2.8 a much wider
6:40 aperture so the young no optics still
6:43 lag behind canons more expensive options
6:46 now then I tried mounting the lens onto
6:49 my sony a7r 2 for a high resolution
6:53 full-frame test at 42 megapixels the
6:55 aperture mechanism wouldn't work
6:57 probably with my adapted a it would only
6:59 stop down the aperture just after I've
7:02 taken a picture still here's a test
7:06 picture at F 1.8 for you all on my 42
7:08 megapixel camera in the middle of the
7:11 image at F 1.8 there's still a
7:13 respectable amount of sharpness although
7:15 contrast is still a little low the
7:18 corners welp there you go there are the
7:21 corners not great I wish I could have
7:23 stopped down the lens's aperture for
7:25 more test pictures there sorry everyone
7:29 finally aps-c a lot of people watching
7:32 this review will be using aps-c cameras
7:34 as they cost a lot less than full frame
7:37 cameras and this is obviously a budget
7:39 lens so let's see how it performs
7:43 adapted onto a 24 megapixel crop sensor
7:48 camera my Canon EOS m3 at F 1.8 the lens
7:50 is a little soft in the middle of the
7:52 image and some color fringing is visible
7:55 the corners of the image are really soft
7:58 @f 2.8 they're still very soft about
8:01 contrast is greatly improved the middle
8:03 of the image looks a lot better though
8:06 stop the lens down to f/4 for a sudden
8:09 leap in image quality the middle of the
8:11 image looks fantastic now the corners
8:15 are a bit sharper to the sharper Gannett
8:18 at 5.6 and f/8 the lenses optical sweet
8:21 spot if he stopped down the lens to f11
8:25 f-16 or even f-22 then diffraction
8:28 really begins to kick in and the image
8:31 looks a lot softer so on an aps-c camera
8:34 it's not a great performance really
8:36 although the lens can yield sharp
8:39 results from about f/4 and best results
8:43 between F 5.6 and f/8 again the Canon
8:46 50mm meter F 1 point 8 will be sharper
8:49 here alright let's look at distortion
8:51 and fin eating on a full frame camera
8:54 they're completely average for this type
8:56 of lens we see just a little barrel
8:59 distortion and at F 1.8 we also see
9:02 pretty dark corners stop down to F 2.8
9:05 or f/4 and those corners brighten up
9:08 again as I mentioned before this lens
9:11 can focus down to quite a nice 35
9:14 centimeters at F 1.8 close-up image
9:17 quality is just a little softer than at
9:20 normal distances stop down to F 2.8 or
9:24 f/4 for sharp close-up image quality
9:27 let's see how this lens works against
9:30 bright nights the answer is not well we
9:33 see huge amounts of flaring and loss of
9:35 contrast this is another area where
9:38 canons lenses fare much better
9:42 finally bakka this lens can give you
9:44 nicely out-of-focus backgrounds how do
9:46 those backgrounds actually look in my
9:49 experience most 50 millimeter lenses
9:51 have slightly nervous looking Bacher but
9:53 this young no lens looks just a little
9:56 smoothened than usual backgrounds melt
9:58 away relatively well with just a little
10:01 highlighting on bright point of light
10:04 well overall the young no 50 millimeter
10:07 of 1.8 mark 2 is a nice little
10:10 improvement over its predecessor its
10:13 image quality isn't any sharper as far
10:15 as I can tell unfortunately although it
10:17 handles flaring and bright night a
10:20 little better the build quality is just
10:23 a lot nicer and tougher and the close
10:26 focusing distance is a great new feature
10:29 to its parameters compete with a canon
10:33 50 millimeter F 1 point 8 STM the Canon
10:36 lens is sharper a little smaller and has
10:39 a far far better autofocus system the
10:42 Canon it's just a much better lens
10:45 however the new young mo is still able
10:47 to get you the same kind of lovely 50
10:50 millimeter F 1 point 8 images with just
10:53 a bit less sharpness and contrast and it
10:55 costs far less than canon's latest
10:58 option so as usual in camera lens land
11:01 you get what you pay for you pay your
