all too vulnerable territory it is a
treasury of biological diversity that
connects thousands of valuable habitats
like a string of pearls from the Baltic
Sea to Saxony
it's a Noah's Ark in a time of worldwide
like no other place it is a powerful
reminder of the inhuman separation
within Germany and of its peaceful
reunification the greenbelt [Music]

shortly after reunification nature
conservationists from east and west
under the leadership of the BU nd made
of visionary and at the same time bold
demand the border strip conquered by
nature was to be protected completely as
an ecological backbone of Germany and
Europe since then the B und Friends of
the Earth Germany has been improving
strategies and alliances continuously to
protect the Greenbelt and has been
purchasing land to save it from the plow
with great success almost two-thirds of
the Greenbelt Germany is already
protected a refuge for an impressive
diversity of animal and plant species of
which 1,200 are threatened [Music]

nevertheless there are parts of the
Greenbelt known as gaps which are
currently intensively managed by farmers
as grassland or arable land [Music]

the B und will not rest before these
parts of the Greenbelt are managed in an
ecologically sensitive way [Music]
