0:14 hey guys what's up well for my channel
0:16 finance prank today we're gonna go over
0:17 something that seems really click
0:19 vailable and there seem to be a lot of
0:21 controversy over just misinformation PLA
0:23 smoothing this is post-processing after
0:24 you get your print off the bed and
0:26 hopefully today I can show you a little
0:29 technique that I've found you know just
0:31 kind of cross utilized for another hobby
0:34 into getting smooth PLA prints this
0:36 won't work for really tiny recesses in
0:37 small details that you're still gonna
0:39 probably ought to use sandpaper for but
0:41 hopefully this process will teach you
0:43 how to smooth very large areas so you
0:44 can take something like this like a
0:46 fresh Walker and helmet and get
0:47 something like this that actually shines
0:48 in a smooth
0:50 there's no bondo or body filler or wood
0:51 filler anywhere on this this is all
0:53 sanded and painted and as you can see I
0:55 got pretty smooth and I'm happy with
0:57 I've not a lot of questions on how long
0:58 did that take the sand especially for
1:00 the whole suit oh my god you must have
1:02 you know gone mad sanding I didn't know
1:03 I only spent a couple hours sanding the
1:05 entire suit saying this probably took
1:07 five to ten minutes tops
1:08 so let's go hop into the garage I'll
1:10 bring the the fresh helmet and we'll get
1:13 started so guys what's the secret this
1:14 is a twenty dollar Black & Decker palm
1:16 sander you can get at Home Depot Walmart
1:17 it doesn't need to be black and decker
1:20 it to be anything and I have eighty grit
1:21 sandpaper on it now you'll see a lot of
1:22 people say don't use palm sander is on
1:24 PLA you'll overheat it you'll burn it go
1:26 melt it and that's very true so I have a
1:28 scrap piece of PLA from a bad project
1:30 that actually has pretty bad leather
1:31 lines and I'm going to show you what
1:33 happens if you start to see it one spot
1:34 too long or you're not careful what it
1:35 looks like when you start to burn and
1:37 when you want to back off if you start
1:39 to burn it there are ways to fix it and
1:40 kind of stop it's not the end of the
1:41 world but you need to be able to look
1:42 for the signs if appeal they starts to
1:44 melt and then we'll jump into the helmet
1:46 and we'll start sanding that that's it
1:47 so let's get started so as anything with
1:50 anything electric or you know motorized
1:51 make sure you wear you know your handy
1:53 dandy safety glasses because you don't
1:54 want anything bad to happen to your eyes
1:56 so turn on your palm sander and just
1:58 just sit on the part um always practice
2:00 try this with a scrap piece first you
2:01 can actually see the low poly count on
2:03 this model it was for a another Ironman
2:05 suit that I kind of ditched the project
2:07 on because I wasn't a fan of it anyway
2:09 so let's get started get your palm
2:10 sander be in a nice safe environment
2:13 have your glasses on [Music]
2:19 [Music]
2:21 so anytime I start this palm sander up
2:22 there's probably to be a little bit of a
2:24 time skip or a time jump because it's
2:26 just loud but right here you can already
2:28 start to see it revealing a layer line I
2:30 probably couldn't even see to begin with
2:32 right there but it's already smooth so
2:34 if I want to keep cutting down that
2:35 layer line don't sit in the same spot
2:37 you're gonna want to move around and
2:38 start smoothing it out [Music]
2:45 [Music]
2:47 well it looks like I started to burn a
2:49 spot so if you look right here it's kind
2:51 of actually still a little soft you'll
2:52 be able to see that that's actually a
2:54 spot of a sanding that was starting to
2:56 get too hot and start to melt and burned
2:58 a little bit it'll start to get a little
2:59 bit darker than the rest of the material
3:01 dependent in this varies on what color
3:02 are using but this black reveals itself
3:04 very easily when you start to sit in a
3:07 spot too long so just be careful to look
3:09 for that kind of burning look and move
3:11 around on the print as you can see up
3:12 here all the layer lines were pretty
3:14 much almost gone and however much time
3:16 you want to take with this is the
3:19 results you'll get so that's a good
3:21 little scrap piece I know this works so
3:23 this is with 80 grit but if you actually
3:25 run my finger over and feel it it's
3:27 still a little rough so what I'll do is
3:29 after I cut up this I'll go and grab
3:32 something like 200 grit sandpaper and
3:35 just real sit knock it down
3:37 that's it and then this is ready for
3:39 priming so let's move on to the helmet
3:41 isn't she a beaut it's like I said I
3:43 haven't done any sanding on this yet
3:45 it's fresh off the printer now I'm not
3:46 gonna sit here and tell you how to put
3:48 in all your settings how to get smooth
3:49 prints that's something you're gonna
3:50 have there's too many tutorials on that
3:52 and this is not one of them so dial in
3:53 your print settings but they don't even
3:55 need to be this smooth to get good
3:58 sanding results I left my Z seen here I
3:59 don't really care where that ends up I
4:02 think I have it on random the edges you
4:03 want to clean them up a little bit with
4:04 a file I cleaned up the eyes because
4:05 obviously the palm sander can't get in
4:08 there but this is ready to sand so I'm
4:09 gonna do half the mass and show you the
4:11 results so [Music]
4:20 so that's half the mass have done kinda
4:21 let's say Deathstroke actually I want to
4:23 see what that looks like in the mask I
4:27 bet so it's still a little rough I
4:29 couldn't get into the really small spots
4:32 but like I said grab some like 200 grit
4:35 really thin sandpaper this is 180 you'll
4:36 be able to feel it you'll feel little
4:39 bits raised up and just tuck them down
4:41 you'll see actually the color change to
4:42 this lets you know that you're still
4:44 sanding the right spot this is still a
4:46 little bit darker and as ice and it gets
4:48 a little bit lighter
4:50 all I'm doing is kind of knocking down
4:53 the little areas that got raised up wall
4:54 of expanding this would be a good time
4:56 to go and make sure you touching the
5:03 little delay since we I wish you guys
5:04 could feel what this feels like right
5:07 now might be able to hear a little bit
5:11 of scratching if you can differentiate
5:12 what that is
5:14 that's my thang my finger down grabbing
5:15 all the little airlines and this is a
5:17 small pretty smooth print and I still
5:18 have a little bit I think see my see
5:20 seemed kind of just completely
5:22 disappeared and this half of the mask is
5:25 ready for priming and if you prime this
5:28 versus this you'll the layer lines will
5:29 start to see in this one this one you
5:32 shouldn't see any now like I said
5:33 however much trying to take with this is
5:34 are the results you're going to get
5:37 spend time in this process I've gotten
5:39 pretty good with the sander you can try
5:41 different grits I think I have a 16 to
5:42 40 grit over there they're a little
5:44 harsh I found that this 80 grit is
5:46 pretty perfect and as you can see just
5:48 also be careful near on the edges so
5:50 what you'll get is if you sit in on that
5:52 edge too long it will start to kind of
5:54 melt over and lose that little bit of
5:56 definition be careful there it's very
5:58 very easily remedied I'll be learning
5:59 some pitch changes back over it and
6:02 it'll smooth that whole it edge back out
6:04 so just you know practice practice
6:05 practice practice it'll make this a lot
6:07 easier and if you start getting it down
6:10 it'll save you so much time on the back
6:12 end so I'm gonna go ahead I'm gonna do
6:13 the rest of the mask and then I'm gonna
6:14 do the rest of the helmet and we'll see
6:15 what it looks like [Music]
7:27 [Music]
7:32 and don't so that's it guys
7:35 this is the fully sanded helmet I think
7:38 it came out great so I haven't glued
7:39 anything together yet because I'm still
7:41 going to go back and touch up some of
7:43 the lines that just got messed up in the
7:44 printing process make sure they're
7:46 deeper and kind of a thicker more
7:48 prominent line so when it's painted and
7:50 everything that's built up you'll be
7:52 able to see them much better one thing I
7:53 didn't really talk about in the
7:55 beginning was where your supports are so
7:57 on this back of this helmet to save time
7:59 I don't print helmets straight up like
8:03 this I'll print them in - I'll orient
8:04 them for the least amount of material
8:06 and the best time so what I did for the
8:08 back skull was just stood it up now what
8:09 that did is it left adjust a little bit
8:11 of chunks missing when I remove the
8:13 supports which I'm fine with
8:16 so go get yourself something like this a
8:19 little simple wood filler and you'll be
8:20 able to touch in these little lines a
8:22 lot of this will disappear once I prime
8:24 it but there's just like one or two very
8:26 deep recesses I wasn't able to sand out
8:28 throw some wood filler over this and
8:30 smooth it out depending how you orient
8:32 your prints you might not need to do
8:33 this at all the helmet I showed you the
8:34 beginning of the video I oriented in
8:36 another way I didn't there was no marks
8:38 or issues like this all this was
8:40 actually inside the skull cap and I
8:42 didn't even need to touch it up but for
8:43 this one I'm going to throw just a
8:44 little bit of wood filler back here it
8:46 drives quicksands super easy and it
8:48 paints great but aside from that this
8:50 thing is all ready to be glued together
8:53 and that would be a separate video on
8:56 how I bond infuse PLA so good and then
8:57 we'll move on to painting and everything
9:02 else so that's this mask done ready to
9:05 go if you have any comments questions
9:07 concerns about anything you saw you want
9:09 to know why I did this or didn't do that
9:10 or maybe you have a better suggestion on
9:12 how to smooth things out even quicker
9:15 let me know message me on Instagram it's
9:19 easier to talk and thanks a lot [Music]
9:27 [Music] you
