0:02 hey guys crypto Dad here again and today
0:04 I'm going to show you how to install the
0:07 Tails operating system for ultimate
0:10 security and privacy so let's get [Music]
0:20 started so I've had a lot of requests on
0:23 how to set up the Tails operating system
0:25 the Tails system is a specialized
0:29 operating system that boots from a USB
0:32 flat has drive and gives you ultimate
0:35 privacy and security so I'm here on
0:37 their website I'll put a link to this
0:40 down in the description below uh it
0:42 explains what tails is what it's all
0:45 about why you should use it uh that it's
0:49 portable it's free open source based on
0:52 the Debian Linux operating system it's a
0:55 little bit tricky to get installed and
0:57 to get running so I'm going to walk you
0:59 through every step of the way the first
1:01 thing we we need to do is get it
1:04 installed on one of our flash drives and
1:06 then the next step of course will be
1:09 configuring our computer to boot from
1:11 the flash drive so there's a lot of
1:13 choices for flash drives that you can
1:16 use uh I particularly like SanDisk I've
1:19 been using them for many years and every
1:21 year they get more advanced and uh
1:25 higher capacity so uh pretty cool get
1:27 your hands on a flash drive you've
1:28 probably got one laying around in a
1:31 drawer somewhere you need one that has
1:35 at least 8 gab of storage on there and
1:37 these days I don't even think you can
1:39 get an 8 gigabyte anymore they start
1:44 around 32 so um if it's a couple years
1:46 old you're probably going to be fine
1:48 right but just make sure it's got more
1:51 than 8 gigs all right so once we've got
1:55 our uh flash drive ready to go keep in
1:57 mind that it is going to get erased when
2:01 you uh install tails so we'll go down
2:04 here to install tails and I'm running on
2:07 a Windows machine now when you boot up a
2:10 computer using the Tails operating
2:12 system from a flash dis you don't have
2:15 to worry about viruses any viruses that
2:17 may have been on that computer's hard
2:20 drive are totally bypassed by the Tails
2:22 operating system but when you're
2:26 creating your Tails system using a flash
2:28 disc you do need to be aware that the
2:30 system that you're using
2:33 should be free of viruses during the
2:36 creation process so make sure that
2:38 whatever computer you're using to create
2:41 your Tails disc uh is free of viruses
2:43 you've got good virus and antimalware
2:45 protection on the computer you've done
2:48 recent scans so that you can create a
2:51 clean tail system I'm using Windows so
2:53 I'll start over here all right as I
2:55 mentioned uh you'll need a USB stick
2:59 with at least 8 GB of capacity uh I'm
3:02 using Windows 11 so I'm okay here uh my
3:06 computer has plenty of Ram uh and you'll
3:09 need a smartphone or a printer and
3:10 you're going to need to set aside a
3:12 little bit of
3:14 time all right so the first thing we'll
3:17 do is Click download we can just drop
3:19 this in our downloads folder all right
3:21 and then we'll open that up and you can
3:24 see the disk image that we have here so
3:26 when we download open- Source software
3:28 we should always run verification checks
3:31 to make sure that we have a good copy of
3:33 the installer that hasn't been corrupted
3:36 or altered in transport and that it has
3:39 been signed by the developers so there's
3:42 an easy way and uh a more secure and
3:44 thorough way to do it and I'll just
3:47 briefly touch on both of those so as you
3:49 can see I've got the Tails image
3:51 downloaded and it's in my downloads
3:58 computer so uh next is the verification
4:01 step now the easy way to do this is to
4:04 just click head over to our downloads
4:05 click on the image that we just
4:07 downloaded and click
4:11 open and it's going to do a
4:13 verification all right and it's
4:15 successfully verified that's pretty cool
4:17 now there's another way to do this
4:19 that's a little more thorough has to do
4:22 with uh open pgp signatures if you click
4:24 here it'll give you some resources the
4:27 first thing is the signature file if we
4:30 click on here it's going to download a
4:33 signature file that has the exact same
4:34 name as the image that we just
4:36 downloaded you want to put that in the
4:39 exact same folder that you downloaded
4:41 the image and then you can check it out
4:44 here see we've got uh the signature and
4:46 the image are right next to each other
4:48 and we'll use some specialized software
4:50 to run that check we're also going to
4:53 need the signing key of the developers
4:56 so we'll click here and drop that right
4:58 in there next to the other
5:01 stuff so now that we've got all three of
5:04 these files uh we'll run some
5:06 specialized software I'll put a link to
5:09 this down in the description below uh
5:12 the name of this program for Windows is
5:15 Cleopatra Cleopatra is some software
5:19 that is included in the gpg for Windows
5:21 the gpg for
5:23 win I'll put a link to this down in the
5:25 description below once we've got
5:27 Cleopatra launched the first thing we'll
5:30 do is import that developer key that we
5:32 downloaded uh I'm just going to I'm just
5:34 going to switch this to all files
5:36 they've got kind of a strange extension
5:39 on it but it should work and there we go
5:41 it tells us that we're importing a key
5:43 I'll go ahead and certify this there are
5:46 other more rigorous ways to verify this
5:48 signature but I'm just going to take it
5:53 as uh valid all right and there we go
5:56 we'll click
5:58 certify now we have the proper developer
6:01 signatures in our our list here see we
6:03 got the Tails developer
6:06 here all right so once we've got that we
6:10 can do our verification step we'll click
6:12 decrypt verify we'll go to downloads and
6:15 we'll click right on the uh installer
6:18 image click
6:21 open and it's going to do its uh
6:23 verification there and that's what we
6:26 want to see a nice green verification it
6:30 checked that signature file um for the
6:32 installer against the uh developer
6:35 signature and everything is good right
6:39 so uh that is the if you're into
6:41 security and opsc that is the ultimate
6:43 way to verify cryptographically a
6:47 downloaded file but the uh earlier one
6:49 that I showed you is probably just as good
6:50 good
6:53 too all right and then the next step is
6:56 uh a little program called Baner there
6:58 are lots of different programs that can
7:02 write and image file to uh a flash drive
7:05 so that it's bootable uh and they have
7:07 one preferred here I have a program
7:09 called Power ISO that can do the same
7:12 thing but I'll stick with their uh
7:14 recommended little utility here so we'll
7:17 go ahead and download this we'll just
7:19 drop that in our downloads folder and
7:21 then we can go over here and run it now
7:24 that we've got this uh running we need
7:26 to uh put our flash drive in our
7:28 computer I'll just go ahead and insert
7:31 this uh blank flash
7:34 drive in the
7:36 computer I believe it will overwrite any
7:38 data that you have on there so be
7:41 careful it's not something you need um
7:42 and you might want to just format the
7:45 flash drive beforehand so the first
7:47 thing we'll need is that file that we
7:49 downloaded we'll need to uh select that
7:51 we'll go over to our downloads folder
7:53 and select the Tails
7:55 image all right and the next thing we'll
7:59 do is select the destination Target all
8:01 right so we'll select our Target I'll
8:05 use my SanDisk Extreme which I've really
8:07 loved over the
8:10 years had it for a few years we'll
8:13 choose select here all right and let's
8:21 [Music] yay
8:23 yay
8:26 okay so we're done
8:30 there we'll go ahead and finish this off
8:31 let's go back to our
8:34 instructions now they have a QR code
8:37 that you can scan with your phone so you
8:40 can just use your phone to scan
8:43 this and it'll put the instructions
8:45 right on your phone or you can print
8:48 this whole thing out on a piece of paper
8:49 you might want to stick to the phone
8:54 that look like to be about 15
8:58 pages oh boy okay all right so now we're
9:00 going to Bo boot
9:04 from uh our USB stick now they have some
9:07 instructions for Windows here uh that
9:11 will uh direct Windows to look for a USB
9:13 device on the next Boot and then they
9:16 mention a boot screen here so as you can
9:18 see I've got a blank screen over here
9:20 this uh monitor is connected to a
9:23 secondary uh machine that I'm going to
9:26 use I'll continue to record on my main
9:29 rig but basically uh you just want to
9:32 insert this into your computer as it's
9:36 uh shut down um you could choose uh a
9:40 drive here or in the back of the machine
9:42 uh it doesn't really matter and every
9:43 boot screen is different so I'm going to
9:45 take you through mine now there's a
9:47 little bit of a trick to getting into
9:51 the bios of your computer and it uh
9:54 requires you to hit a special key
9:58 sometimes it's F2 sometimes it's delete
10:00 uh but one thing you need to remember is
10:03 you cannot just hold the key down uh if
10:06 you hold the key down it's going to make
10:11 a uh horrible beeping sound so basically
10:13 uh as you're booting up your computer
10:17 you want to just uh softly uh tap that
10:20 key all right you'll I don't know if you
10:21 can hear this but I'm just kind of
10:29 key all right
10:33 uh so now you can see my boot screen and
10:35 as I mentioned every boot screen is
10:37 different uh you want to go into the
10:40 settings and you should be able to find
10:44 a boot menu
10:47 somewhere you'll click on that now in
10:51 this case what we want to do is uh go
10:54 into boot order and as you'll notice
10:58 here in my boot order the uh first one
11:00 is a a
11:04 USB uh key uh and uh if you're going to
11:08 use this computer uh for Tails uh once
11:11 you have set this in the Bios it will
11:16 always look for a USB key to boot from
11:19 so that uh after you're done uh as long
11:21 as you don't have your
11:26 Tails flash drive in uh inserted it will
11:28 it will boot normally uh onto the hard
11:30 drive every time and then all you'll
11:32 have to do if you wish to boot from
11:35 tails is shut down the computer insert
11:37 the flash drive and it will always check
11:39 for it once it finds it it'll boot up
11:43 from there uh fun fact uh in the old
11:46 days which many of you probably don't uh
11:49 recall in person but every desktop
11:53 computer used to by default always check
11:57 for a floppy Drive in uh first before it
11:59 booted from a hard drive because the
12:02 original desktop computers booted from
12:05 floppy drives and so uh most of the
12:07 older bios will always check for a
12:11 floppy Drive uh for a system Drive first
12:15 uh a bit of old uh desktop trivia there
12:18 uh but so now we have the boot priority
12:22 set up to check for a USB key uh every
12:23 time the computer
12:26 boots so now I'm going to hit
12:29 F10 and uh I'll just hit enter or you
12:31 can click
12:34 yes that's a little hard to read there
12:36 this particular machine needs a little
12:37 bit of
12:39 coing uh I don't know what your
12:43 situation might be but it might you
12:45 might need to uh turn the computer off
12:48 and on again to get it to boot from your
12:50 flash drive we'll see it looks like uh
12:52 it's going to do it this time and there
12:53 we go where
12:57 entails uh the first option is fine uh
12:59 you can switch it around if you're
13:01 having trouble but it will uh boot up
13:04 from Tails by default all right and this
13:06 is the setup screen where you can set
13:09 your language in keyboard and formats uh
13:11 depending on your country and your
13:15 language also you can enable persistent
13:17 storage here generally when you use
13:19 tails in its default configuration there
13:22 will be no persistence whatsoever so
13:24 that every time you start it up you're
13:27 going to have to do all this initial
13:30 configuration uh which is fine if you
13:32 want to maintain ultimate privacy and
13:35 security but you also might want to have
13:37 some persistent storage in case you want
13:40 to save some things like logins or
13:42 documents or anything that you might
13:44 create the persistent storage is going
13:47 to be encrypted that will there will be
13:49 a password on it so that if anyone finds
13:53 your Tails uh flash drive they won't be
13:55 able to read it and it does add a little
13:57 bit of convenience to the process
14:00 without having to reconfigure every time
14:02 you boot up so I'm going to go ahead and
14:04 enable persistent storage as we get
14:08 going here we'll start up Tails all
14:09 right and it's going to start with
14:11 persistent storage we'll uh continue
14:14 there we'll go ahead and put our pass
14:16 phrase on there now they want this to be
14:18 really long I'm just going to I just
14:21 used a relatively short password
14:24 something that I'll remember but this is
14:26 an encrypted drive so the recommendation
14:29 is to use a really long p password or
14:32 what we might call a passphrase with
14:34 multiple words all right and then you
14:37 can enable some things to go ahead and
14:40 start up automatically for you uh once
14:43 you have persistent storage I won't do
14:45 the network connection but if you wanted
14:48 to remember your pass uh your Wi-Fi
14:50 passwords and stuff like that you might
14:53 want to enable this uh I'll set the tour
14:56 Bridge uh I'll allow it to save my
14:59 bookmarks and then a couple couple of
15:02 programs that uh we want as defaults
15:04 notice they've got a little uh chat
15:07 messenger here that you could uh enable
15:10 I'll just enable them all all right and
15:12 then the first startup here is going to
15:15 be our tour uh I'll just choose connect
15:18 to tour automatically and use a bridge
15:20 uh if you're a little more advanced you
15:22 might want to check out some of these
15:25 hidden options if maybe you're a
15:27 journalist or someone that wants to
15:30 avoid detection you can get a private
15:33 Bridge from tour they'll email you or if
15:36 you have a tour bridge that you're aware
15:39 of uh you can use here as
15:42 well I'll just stick with the uh default
15:44 here all right it's going to go ahead
15:47 and connect to the tour Network and then
15:49 you can start the tour browser all right
15:51 so now we've launched the tour browser
15:53 yeah they're complaining that my pass
15:55 phrase or password for my persistent
15:59 storage isn't uh long enough to resist a
16:02 state sponsored attack should they get
16:06 my device in their possession um but as
16:08 long as you keep your device hidden in a
16:10 good place no one's going to get uh
16:12 possession of the device they're giving
16:16 us Ultimate Security tips right now uh
16:20 the tour browser is a web browser that
16:22 uh runs uh with
16:26 encryption so that uh no one can uh see
16:29 your traffic and uh but I should point
16:32 out that just using tails and the Torah
16:34 browser is not going to maintain your
16:37 privacy and security if you start doing
16:39 things that are related to your identity
16:42 like logging into your email accounts or
16:44 Microsoft accounts or your YouTube
16:47 account so that you've got your history
16:50 uh all of that stuff is uh going to
16:53 generate identifying information that uh
16:56 tails and tour cannot protect you from
16:58 so when you're using tails you want want
17:03 to sort of only use it for um what it's
17:05 designed for right if you want to log
17:07 into your normal accounts then use your
17:09 normal computer when you're using tails
17:11 you want to avoid that kind of stuff now
17:14 uh I'll note that that this is a very
17:17 rich operating system notice they've got
17:20 the Cleopatra built in uh keypass which
17:22 is great for storing your passwords
17:25 you'll want to store uh the keypass file
17:28 in your persistent storage if you use it
17:30 so that you'll have access to it each
17:32 time you start up uh and then there are
17:35 a number of uh privacy related
17:38 applications here it's a full service
17:41 operating system it also has the Libra
17:43 office system built in and if you want
17:45 to use this and save your documents
17:47 you'll save that on your persistent
17:51 storage as well so very uh Rich system
17:53 that you can use now when you're using
17:57 the tour browser you can uh do normal searches
17:59 searches
18:02 such as uh local uh latest news and it
18:06 will use the duck ducko search engine to
18:09 search for uh news or whatever you're
18:13 looking for now uh keep in mind though
18:17 that if you're using the tour browser U
18:21 and you try to log into uh a do website
18:23 that only you will be encrypted you're
18:25 looking at a site that's on the clear
18:28 net so the site itself is not going to have
18:29 have
18:33 encryption right so basically uh the
18:36 best thing that you can do is uh look
18:39 for onion sites you can do that by maybe
18:41 searching for hidden
18:44 wiki and uh you can go to the hidden
18:47 wiki site now take note that this site
18:50 itself is on the Clearnet it ends in.org
18:53 but it does have whole bunch of onion
18:56 links that will take you to onion sites
18:59 which are encrypted and one one of those
19:01 is another uh a hidden wiki and another
19:04 hidden wiki so you can visit this site
19:09 on the darket with a onion extension by
19:12 clicking this link here okay and so you
19:16 can see that the site ends in onion now
19:19 and so now we're on a an encrypted
19:22 website using an encrypted browser and
19:23 this is
19:26 ideal and then uh you can find a lot of
19:29 other sites that you might want visit uh
19:31 there's a lot of sites related to
19:33 privacy and news and things that you can
19:37 find uh just uh for Ultimate Security uh
19:41 it's better to stick with onion websites
19:43 uh there's a lot of illicit content on
19:46 the dark web I'm not advocating that you
19:49 use any of this stuff all I'm saying is
19:50 that if you use tails and you use the
19:53 tourah browser that uh you'll be able to
19:56 maintain privacy and security while
19:58 you're browsing the web and there's a
20:00 lot lot of chat rooms and newsrooms that
20:03 are available where you can uh browse
20:06 anonymously and interact
20:08 anonymously all right so that's it
20:10 that's an overview of how to get Tails
20:13 set up and configured uh best of luck to
20:16 everyone if there's any questions that
20:18 you have about anything I did please
20:20 throw them up in the comments and I'll
20:22 do my best to get them answered if you
20:24 like this video give me a thumbs up if
20:25 you'd like to subscribe to my channel I
20:27 would appreciate it when you subscribe
20:29 there a little bell that you can click
20:31 that will allow you to be alerted
20:33 whenever I post new content once again
20:35 thanks for joining me and hope to see
