the senate committee investigating
watergate learned that nixon had made
tape recordings of conversations in the
oval office
and both the senate committee and the
watergate special prosecutor archibald
cox subpoenaed the tapes but nixon
refused to comply with the subpoenas
which again is illegal
in late october after failing to cut a
satisfactory deal nixon ordered his
attorney general richardson to fire
special prosecutor cox but the a.g
refused to do so in response nixon fired
both his own attorney general and then
special prosecutor cox in what became
known as the saturday night massacre
and really the downfall of the nixon
