living a balanced happy and fulfilled
life nowadays a usual day for me looks
like this I start with a workout and
then efficiently complete all my work
tasks including content creat
communicating with my team contracts
taxes and emails before noon
effortlessly and with ease then I
happily enjoy my free time without tasks
that aren't done creeping up in my mind
and keeping me stressed throughout the
day but it wasn't always like that life
nowadays often still feels like a too
good to be true dream when I remember
how it used to be let's jump back in
time to a few years ago when I was not
only lost but also at my worst because
life for me with undiagnosed ADHD just
felt like hell I still get goosebumps
when I remember the struggle and
frustration I faced feeling cursed by
ADHD and just angry at life nearly
accepting that I have no chance at ever
achieving my dreams early on in life I
always felt like an outsider I just felt
like the world was not built for me I
felt like a different software that
wasn't compatible with the normal world
was downloaded into my brain I didn't
know what it was but I just felt so
different to everyone else during that
time my family moved back to Germany
from a foreign country because of my
dad's work and I really hoped it would
change everything for the better but it
didn't little did I know I was about to
face one of the biggest challenges of my
life back in Germany I got thrown into
one of the hardest education systems in
the world to put it into perspective I
had about 4 years of school material to
catch up on all while having to relearn
the German language yeah this easy one
right here this immediately felt like an
unclimbable mountain and made me feel
like I was living in a constant state of
overwhelm which made me feel insanely
behind everyone else more than ever
before during this time I had little
self-belief that I'll be able to
overcome it because I always struggled
in school I was one of those kids who
always excelled in subjects they loved
but just dragged myself through the ones
I hated this doesn't mean I didn't put
effort into those subjects in fact it
was the exact opposite I would try to
start studying weeks in advance and make
plans before tests but when I didn't
absolutely love what I was studying I
just couldn't get my brain to go on no
matter how hard I tried it felt like a
steam train coming with speed towards me
because the test were coming closer day
by day and the closer they got the more
stressed and overwhelmed I became but I
just couldn't get myself to study up
until the very last minute often only
just being able to escape being run over
by that speed train in time I felt like
I was endlessly wasting my life away in
procrastination mode I also didn't enjoy
myself at all while I was studying I
just sat there doing the most useless
stuff ever not allowing myself to meet
people or do fun stuff because I was
constantly telling myself that I'm
supposed to be productive right now I
was stuck screaming at myself why can't
I just do it what's wrong with me why am
I like this so many days weeks months
even years of my life were wasted in a
constant state of stress self-doubt and
self-hatred I was so sad about all that
lost time that I could have at least
spent in a fun way I felt so guilty and
ashamed for my behavior and wasting away
my life like that and then the day
before the test I often managed to grasp
just enough of it to barely pass it felt
like putting in 400% more effort and
pain than others just to get 30% of the
results they achieved and this wasn't
even the worst part teachers often
labeled me as a gifted underachiever you
have no idea how often teachers told me
me that I am smart and have so much
potential but that I am just too lazy to
apply myself that I could achieve so
much if I just tried everyone just
decided I was lazy and uninterested but
no one saw that I was trying so hard or
understood the internal battle I was
fighting all the time I just felt like
being held back by this invisible force
wanting me to fail in life it felt like
needing to push a big Stone up a hill or
having the world on my back despite my
struggles I managed to graduate high
school and barely get into University
where the same pattern just continued to
the point where I developed severe
anxiety crazy where something simple
like just not being able to follow
through and complete tasks can lead so I
decided to see a therapist I didn't know
it at the time but soon I'd enter a
pivotal moment of my ADHD Journey just a
couple of visits into therapy my
therapist threw me AC curveball I think
you should see an ADHD specialist she
said leaving me puzzled and even more
frustrated with myself I thought she
could help me but here she was
redirecting me to someone else I felt
broken again a few weeks later I was
sitting with a psychiatrist and he
started firing off these questions that
made it feel like my whole life all of a
sudden explained itself to me do you
tend to almost always complete tasks
last minute do you feel like you can
never catch a break are you constantly
feeling overwhelmed or anxious do you
try as hard as you possibly can but
still drop the ball in the end are you
super creative but can't find the
motivation to just even do the laundry
do you feel like you have lots of
potential but just can't realize it I
was like yes yes yes yes yes and yes and
you guys might have guessed it I got the
diagnosis ADHD maybe this rings a bell
for some of you discovering this was a
revelation first it felt odd it felt
like when you learn something
significant a significant truth before
knowing how to process it but after my
psychiatrist discussed it with me a
sense of comfort washed over me I felt
almost found as if pieces of a puzzle
were finally falling into place there it
was a scientific reason for the
Whirlwind in my mind I wasn't weird
weird or lazy or dumb I just have
ADHD finally an explanation for All My
Life's problems at that moment the
weight of years lifted in an instant
relief washed over me it was truly
liberating soon after my diagnosis I got
prescribed Ridin and I was so happy I
had so much hope that I'll finally break
out of this vicious cycle of
procrastination executive paralysis and
just not doing what I was supposed
supposed to do or wanted to do I thought
I would finally achieve some balance and
rest in my life and my life all of a
sudden turned around
180° I remember the exact day when I
took medication for the first time I was
sitting in a tax law seminar that I
hated from the bottom of my heart this
usually always felt like 90 minutes of
pure pain while not getting any
information into my
brain but all of a sudden I felt like
Cooper on the Limitless pill I picked up
the most boring information at hypers
speed and it felt so easy I was like wow
this is what neurotypical people feel
like all the time it was so hard for me
to comprehend how simple tasks which
were such a struggle for me were so easy
for normal people but it was amazing I
even started raising my hand usually I'd
only do this when wanting to go to the
toilet this was around the time when I
first said the goal of becoming a
full-time content creator because I
always loved movies and films and I felt
like I'd broken out of this vicious ADHD
cycle I was so confident that I could
achieve it and I was right I started to
consistently make videos I got some
traction on YouTube and made a lot of
progress at Uni everything was going so
insanely well it was almost too good to
be true and yes it turned out that it
was was to good to be true after a while
I felt less and less of the effects of
this pill and had to raise my dose to
still get the same effect out of it as
before and this is where everything
started to crumble my professional life
was picking up steam but my personal
life went on this extreme downward
trajectory every time I went on
medication I'd feel great for about 6
hours but then I'd have the worst come
down ever for like an hour I just felt
so insanely depressed and Drawn to cheap
dopamine it was like a stranger's brain
had momentarily taken over my own before
I returned to my usual self this messed
with me a lot especially because I took
riddlin almost daily not only that but
also my relationships took a toll my
girlfriend at the time told me I was no
longer the Nick she once knew and soon
we were on the verge of breaking up
which added just another layer to my
emotional strain and already complicated
feelings and she was right everything
good that ADHD brought into my life like
being spontaneous creative or even
something simple like being funny
vanished I essentially lost What defined
me I didn't recognize myself anymore and
on top of that I couldn't sleep I ended
up waking up at night stressed sweating
feeling like I was running an endless
race that I couldn't win I felt Restless
I felt like an alien again I felt
trapped this made my anxiety shoot up to
even now more completely unmanageable
levels I felt as though I had exchanged
a few hours of sharp focus and efficient
execution for a whole different level of
Hell transforming my life into a
complete nightmare once again I found
myself trapped in a new vicious cycle
from which I couldn't escape in my
efforts to fit in to belong to the
normal world I had fallen into another
dark place I felt utterly lost
overwhelmed by questions why is this
happening why me this pain gave me some
motivation to research the medication I
was taking and this is when I learned
that according to a 2010 study I found
on PubMed on average around 48% of ADHD
medication users experience side effects
now I want to highlight the fact that
there are some people whose medication
works really well for them but for
almost 50% including me they don't they
just don't so under the supervision of
my doctor as everyone should do if they
consider this I decided to come off
again and just like that I was back to
square one imagine running a race giving
it your all and just when you think
you're about to cross the finish line
you realize you haven't even started it
felt like being pushed through a time
machine that sent me back to my old self
trapped in the Vicious Cycle of being un
able to focus constantly procrastinating
and living in a state of executive
paralysis and overwhelming chaos I was
completely lost and entered a very dark
time of my life I hated it I couldn't
stand it it felt like a curse that I
just wanted to vanish I felt as though I
was trapped in a prison with no Escape
doomed to remain there indefinitely no
matter what I tried I always found
myself facing that cold prison wall at
the darkest point of all I felt numb
completely devoid of hope this
hopelessness transformed into anger and
then mutated into pure frustration but
the anger I felt eventually transformed
into an intense determination to solve
this issue for myself so I started
researching natural ways of techniques
to deal with my ADHD and soon after I
found myself deeply stuck in the
productivity Rabbit Hole in other words
I tried every productivity hack I found
on YouTube and Instagram Pomodoro work
blocks having my family hold me
accountable you name it I tried it the
more things I tried the more desperate
and intense I became finding a solution
to this problem became my whole purpose
my full identity I bought every course
planner productivity system app or tool
you can think of I think I spent close
to $10,000 just on that and no matter
what I tried the same thing just
happened over and over again every time
I tried a new product or system I
thought I figured it all out all of a
sudden I could focus I'd get things done
work was kind of fun and I even looked
forward to it a bit as I got a slight
Taste of progress but shortly after I
would always stop working and I'd be
right back where I started not being
able to focus stuck in executive
paralysis and just beating myself up
mentally because I just couldn't do the
work after failing so many times I
started to wonder if this was normal for
ADH deers or if I'm just a complete
failure looking for an excuse because
it's a fact that there are so many
insanely successful people out there who
also have ADHD so there must be a way so
I started learning everything I could
about my ADHD brain how is it different
from neurotypical people how does it
work is it even different and after
digging through tons of Articles science
material and studies I eventually found
a 2008 study on PBM that gave me some of
the answers I needed it explained that
people with ADHD naturally have
extremely low dopamine levels this means
we naturally have low internal willpower
motivation and ability to focus
especially when we do things we don't
enjoy because dopamine is the
neurotransmitter that controls all of
this it's a huge biological disadvantage
when it comes to execution but this made
me understand why every productivity
system I tried failed when it was new
and exciting or something I truly loved
it provided my brain with good dopamine
giving me the motivation to follow
through but as the excitement faded so
did the dopamine and the system stopped
working so naturally I thought to myself
if I can somehow raise my dopamine to
the level of a neurotypical person I
should have consistently sufficient
motivation and willpower to follow
through right this is when I started
researching natural ways to sustainably
raise my dopamine levels in the hopes of
being able to do exactly that the first
thing I stumbled upon was that I should
go and start exercising while eating a
high protein diet the problem with that
was that I'd already been doing that for
years which meant this obviously didn't
have enough impact on my dopamine levels
while going deeper down the rabbit hole
I stumbled upon brain supplements that
promised they were able to raise
dopamine levels for example alanine had
some scientific proof that I can help
with that I ended up taking lots of
different supplements clinging to the
hope that they would work yet I remained
unsure whether their effects were truly
different from not taking them at all
but after trying out countless
supplements I had to face the harsh
reality that some might help a bit but
that they are not effective enough to
raise the dopamine of an ADHD to
sufficient levels to have consistent
motivation focus and willpower this made
me realize that if there is something
that works it can't be built on my
dopamine levels or better said it
couldn't rely on my internal willpower
and discipline which at the time seemed
completely abstract and unrealistic but
then a few weeks went by and had an
important deadline I just needed to hit
it was a fairly big project I had a
couple of weeks to complete it and I
started to wonder how come I'm able to
do that why can't I work if I don't
absolutely have to and why can I become
an execution machine if I'm under severe
pressure and can I access the superpower
more frequently and without the anxiety
that goes with it so I did some research
and stumbled over an article explaining
the difference between external and
inter internal triggers when it comes to
sticking to deadlines it showed that
internal triggers like willpower and
discipline were varable meaning your
likelihood of sticking to deadlines
tasks and goals that you set for
yourself will 100% depend on the
discipline and willpower you have but it
also explained that external triggers
like deadlines from your boss clients
professors or teachers are not variable
they have a consistent impact on you and
your performance regardless of your
current willpower motivation and
discipline which made complete sense
because I thought back to all the times
I had this hyperfocus it was always when
there was a hard deadline that was set
by someone else I didn't want to let
down so I went ahead and immediately
hired an external accountability coach
to set my tasks and goals with me for
the week and then hold me accountable
for them in a weekly meeting believe me
I had high hopes for this coach but what
ended up happening was that I would just
complete the tasks last minute right
before our weekly accountability meeting
my daily life would still be a complete
mess of paralysis lack of focus
concentration Etc and then one high
stress period of trying to finish all
the work before the accountability
session so I thought okay I'm always
able to complete my tasks last minute
before the meeting what if I could
recreate this last minute effect
whenever I needed to complete a task
what if I didn't have just weekly
accountability but instead every single
day or better said every hour of the day
so I approached my accountability coach
with the idea and he made suggestions
that we implemented immediately we went
ahead and had meetings every day we
structured it like this the first 5
minutes of the meeting I tell him what
task I wanted to accomplish over the
next hour then I went ahead and worked
for 50 minutes while he was with me on
the call with our cameras on and in the
last 5 minutes of our meeting he would
hold me accountable for what I had
accomplished the first few times we
tried it it worked almost too well no
executive dysfunction no focus problems
just me and my task which I was always
able to tackle with ease but I didn't
celebrate just yet because often times
in the beginning something would work
and then the results would slowly fade
away but over the next few months I
tried this over and over again and it
would work every single time even when I
had to complete tasks I dreaded for
months like my taxes for example it
worked like magic it was almost
unbelievable the only problem I faced
was that it was way too expensive my
coach charged just about $100 an hour
hour and I just couldn't afford to do
this more than like once a week let
alone 6 to 9 hours a day which also
meant it was close to useless 1 hour of
focused work a week was not even close
to enough to accomplish my goals heck
even just to keep up with everyday life
so I tried to look for cheaper ways to
accomplish this I asked one of my ADHD
friends if they were down to try this
with me and after telling them about my
amazing experience they were hyped to
try it out
so we started having regular meetings
implementing the same structure as I did
with my coach in the first meeting we
told each other what we wanted to
accomplish over the next hour and
started working or at least pretended to
because after an hour we just looked at
each other trying to go through what we
had accomplished and we both managed to
achieve absolutely nothing Plan
B let's just kill each other we laughed
it off and said we'll do better next
time and try it again but it happened
over and over again my suspicion was
that we couldn't take it seriously
enough because we were good friends and
I could feel that there really wasn't a
strong sense of accountability like
there was with my coach so I did some
research to see if I might be right and
I came across a research study from Dr
Matthews of the association for talent
development the researchers found that
you have the following probabilities of
completing a goal by taking these
actions having an idea or goal 10%
likely to complete the goal consciously
deciding that you will do it
25% deciding when you will do it 40%
planning how to do it 50% committing to
someone that you will do it
65% and having a specific accountability
appointment with someone you've
committed to
95% I mean this made complete sense
every time I would want people without
professional Authority like family
members or friends to hold me
accountable or give me a deadline back
in my school days it just wouldn't work
so when I tried to implement this with
my friend the professional relationship
and commitment I had towards my coach
was just missing but I had an idea what
if I got more people from the ADHD
Community I built up to try this with me
we could split the costs for the coach
and everyone could benefit so I tried to
find as many people as I possibly could
to split those costs with and ended up
convincing a few of them to do this
together with me most also had ADHD a
few didn't but they all still shared the
same struggle with focus and execution
so we started having a weekly call with
the accountability coach planned our
weekly goals and set tasks with
everything we needed to get done daily
to achieve it then we would schedule our
Focus sessions which is what we called
our regular meetings every single day
for the entire week we would then all
try to get our most daunting tasks done
in the same call and split the cost now
at this point I was a bit scared that my
commitment to the accountability coach
will be diluted and I would fail because
there were too many people but we went
ahead and started the first 5 minutes
minutes of the call all committing to
our accountability coach in front of the
group then we went ahead and started
working and for me I felt relieved just
a few minutes in it had the same effect
as when I was alone with the
accountability coach instantly I was
able to focus and complete tasks at
hypers speed no matter if I was
interested in it or not it was amazing
after the first session when everyone
would report on what we had accomplish
within 50 minutes of work literally
everyone was able to complete what they
wanted to it was amazing no matter if
they had ADHD or not if anything being
in a group of people I was also
committed to supercharged the effect of
this accountability towards my coach
even more over the next few months it
just worked super consistently it was
amazing it felt like accessing exam
deadline pressure any given day but
without the anxiety I made so much
progress in my life during that time I
completed my tasks daily and as a result
of it I blew up on social media my
business grew tremendously as a result
of it and I achieved my lifelong dream
of becoming a full-time content creator
in just a few short months of
consistently posting and executing and
it wasn't just me everyone else in our
group reported tremendous progress on
their personal goals I tried to
understand why this was working so well
and started looking for a scientific
evidence that could explain it I found
an article by Dr Ross Ramsey ADHD
specialist and psychology professor at
the University of Pennsylvania School of
Medicine in which he stated I had the
observation that adults with ADHD are
more likely to initiate and engage in a
typically avoided task if someone else
is present with them and then I stumbled
over social facility ation theory in
which Norman triplet from Indiana
University discovered the co-action
effect specifically he observed an
increase in task performance purely due
to having another person present also
performing a task this is similar to a
recent study where people with ADHD
reported that simply having someone else
around who knows what they're supposed
to be doing increases the motivation for
the task Norman triplet also reports on
the audience effect or how the presence
of an audience just like my friends
alongside my coach can positively affect
performance what proved this even more
for me was a 2012 study on mirror
neurons which showed scans depicting
brain areas that play a crucial role in
the way people imitate other people's
behavior just like how we yawn when we
see other people yawn seeing other
people focus on performing tasks may
help us want to do the same thing
explain in why our Focus sessions with
more people than just me and my coach
have been so powerful and there is so
much more at 2019 study by copc Smith
and Bilbo showed that social
interactions like in the first 5 minutes
of our session can increase your
dopamine levels and therefore willpower
and motivation or human motivation
Theory Dr David mcleland identified that
if someone Compares himself with a
reference group that is highly achieving
that person is more likely to become
High achieving as well which is also
pretty similar to our Focus sessions
because we were obviously also
subconsciously comparing ourselves with
a reference group that's making progress
right now you should know the exact
steps we took to eliminate executive
dysfunction procrastination and poor
Focus which enabled us to consistently
get things done and finally make
progress in our lives we talked about
how adhders can't rely on Willpower and
discipline because of our low dopamine
levels and that therefore all

simply don't work for us second we
talked about how external forces like
deadlines from our boss teacher or
Professor allow us to access last minute
deadline pressure and lastly we talked
about how we can access last minute
pressure every hour of every day by
