right behind me here is the neighborhood
gossip Zone but it's actually his living
room and he just like opened his door
look we're taking a little detour to
today good morning everyone from
Shing we up at the butt crack of dawn to
do some EXP boring because it is so hot
this Summer that you just like can't
even be outdoors after noon up until
like 600 or 7 p.m. so we're up very very
exploring first stop of the day this
bridge that is apparently shaped like
the Chinese character for the number
eight I can't really see the resemblance
maybe it does from like a drone angle or
something but anyway even though it is
the butt crack of dawn the grandmas and
Grandpa are already out and bustling
we're going to go on down there and
check it [Music]
[Music]
out strolling through this little Canal
thingy it's the Venice of China isn't it
[Music] fore
speee [Music]
fore foree [Music]
of course the generation gap and the
desire of the younger generations to
have their own space is not the only
reason the main reason you'll almost
never see anyone under 40 living in
these neighborhoods despite the dirt
cheap rent is the fact that these houses
old so you might be thinking why not
just buy buy one of these cute old
houses and renovate it easier said than
done so right behind me is an example of
these old houses being renovated as you
can see it is not a simple project by
any means it's very complex because the
houses are just so old and so narrow and
cramped on the inside so it's sound like
you can just like buy one of those and
renovate it on your own unless you have
a lot of funds to do that with which
most people in their 20s and 30s I feel
like do not and if they do they probably
want to turn it into a hotel or
something that they can actually make
we're here at one of the little neighborhood
stores this lady just offered me an alcohol
popsicle oh I am not being Bamboozled
today I have tried these before on a
work trip to shaing and it was not the
concept is taking one for the team he's
going to try the fennel bean ice [Music]
cream so I don't even have a word to
describe the flavor of this it's like
sweet salty Umami all at the same time
it's it's just not like anything I've
ever tried before and then the butt end
of it is vanilla so they hit you with
this really intense beginning flavor the
brown part and then once you're through
with that they give you a pallet
neutralizer at the end tell the P sounds
pretty tell the [Music]
p in weather like this it's just
intolerable to be outside but I would
say of all the places to be outside this
is the best one because you're away from
the noise of the road I mean there's
some little little carts and stuff
bumping around but I mean come on it's
pretty quiet in here there's the
peaceful little Canal the shade of these
beautiful trees the grandmas Fanning
themselves the cats the dogs it's just a
very peaceful place to be and you can
almost forget that it's hot as the
depths of hell outside once in a while
cuz you're so distracted by how cute
this place is
this place is actually the home of a
famous author comedian I don't really
know how to define him his name is Lun
like later on in the evening we'll go on
a tour of lucian's house for now we're
this uncle's family has been living in
shaing for the same amount of time as
the United States has existed as a country
back in the day before there were planes
and trains and highways this place was
super important for local Commerce
because everything relied on water now
it's been demoted to a cute place to
[Music]
ch she get [Music]
we thought this was a calligraphy
Workshop but it's actually his living
room and he just like opened his door
wow [Laughter]
oh okay
okay [Music]
wow look at this shop here filled with
beautiful things and they're all going
to get burned burn burn the incense in
the temple burn these fake money
thingies for your ancestors burn this
burn that it's all going to be sent up
into the skies to be delivered to its intended
intended [Music]
recipients hidden away in those little
Canal neighborhoods there is this
gigantic ornate Temple and I saw on the
map there was a temple so I came here to
look at it and I was expecting one of
those like little you guys I was not
expecting this look how ornate this
place is I was not expecting something
like this it's very quiet though cuz it
is so hot out here today so nobody's
visiting the Buddhas in this heat next
stop a local park usually the kind of
place where I could get all kinds of
interesting footage but not today this
has got to be like the emptiest I've
ever seen a Chinese Park in the morning
usually they're completely full of
Grandma's dance and people doing ta Chi
and stuff this morning there's only one
thing happening and I guess it's cuz
it's too hot people don't want to go
outside but these grandmas are not
now we're on our way to another random
little Canal neighborhood to continue our
our
exploration in modern China these little
Alleyways are an endangered species so
I'm recording the few that are still left
left [Music]
right behind me here is the neighborhood gossip
gossip
[Music]
just encountered a chicken selling truck
and it's so hot outside this lady has
been spraying water on the chickens to
help keep them cool it's too hot for
humans for animals for anything to be outside
[Music]
today look at this cute little half door
I love it it's so adorable it's like
we're home we don't want to shut the
door cuz it'll be too dark in here but
we can't have a whole open door cuz
maybe a weirdo will come inside so we
got this half door [Music]
you can spend hours in these old
neighborhoods admiring all the tiny
details of these old homes and each one
has its own unique quirks and its own
personality but once people experience
the conveniences of life in a new
apartment complex with perfect plumbing
and perfect lighting in a modern kitchen
there's really no going back and I get
it these old houses are hard to live in
I just wish new architecture could be cuter
so now I'm in one of the more
commercialized areas so there's a bunch
of little shops all on the street
selling snacks selling knick-knacks
there's little coffee shops all kinds of
cute little things every house is turned
into some sort of cute business
establishment if you cross this little
Bridge here you will see that some of
these houses are just a storefront on
the front end and the back end is just
like a regular average Do's house and
then some of them the ones that have
built these little wooden balconies they
are some sort of cafe or bookstore or
something that has added a seating area
outside for the customers to sit so
these are houses that in previous years
probably would have been seen as being
kind of worthless honestly but now
because all the tourists are coming here
to take photos with the cute scenery all
of a sudden this place has become a
place of [Music]
[Music]
value especially on this side there are
more just average Joe homes like there's
Lally a grandma cooking a meal right
behind me like there's mostly just
regular people's kitchens here facing
out on this canal and then on the other
side is the main Commercial Street so
there's a bit more of the cafe bookstore
kind of thing going like there's a whole
row of balconies over there all those
belong to some kind of Cafe as time goes
on there'll be more and more of that and
less and less of just like the average
backyard situation it's a unique time to
be here right now because you do see the
commercialized stuff the cute
restaurants the cafes but you also get
to see local residents living here so
you really get to see like the fusion of
these two things but of course that's a
transient phase like it's not going to
be like that
forever all right everyone it is past
the point of being tolerable to be
outdoors so we are going to take a break
for a few hours and we will be back at
Sunset we're back everyone it is evening
it is now tolerable to be outside and we
were just ambling along to our evening
destination when we stumbled into this
this thing there's a door in the side of
this little mountain we're taking a
little detour to check out whatever this
thing is let's go it's very cool and
refreshing in here tell me this doesn't
look exactly like a waiting room in a hospital
hospital [Music]
this place is so Random it's just like a
tunnel full of little chairs and
everyone's just like doing their little
thing I feel like I'm in a video game
right now like what is this why does it
end well that was fascinating a nice
little detour and it's very cool and
refreshing in here there's even a
bathroom in this thing there's a hot
water dispenser so you can refill your
water bottle there's some
newspapers all the facilities for a day
of sitting and playing cards or whatever
else you want to do in here and there's
playing all right I'm out of here I
don't want to block their view so now
we're going to show you guys the shaing
NTI lotus pods for sale over here fans keychains
keychains and
this here you can buy aquarium
there's a guy selling sushi on the side
of the road unrefrigerated in this heat
whoever eats that you have a stomach
made out of steel who is going to dare
to eat that on this hot day this guy apparently
we started out our morning peaceful and
quiet with some grandmas Fanning
themselves some uncles fishing and we're
ending our evening in like the busiest
place in all of shaing it feels like
look at this place there are people
everywhere and if you get tired of the
crowds just head over to the canal or
some random back alley and you'll forget
all we have now left behind the bustling
commercialized area and we are now in
the residential area
so it's a lot more quiet and there's not
a whole lot going on but it is part of the
experience okay time for a special
performance as John has been working on
his British accent I feel like American
English should be the priority here just
saying so please let the people hear
your British
doing what's up
girl you guys tell me what accent this
is in the comments cuz it's definitely
not British it's not American I don't
really know what it is it doesn't matter
oh my God [Music]
[Music]
and of course what would a trip to
shaing be without visiting L's house
this is a rich people house from 100
years ago in China it's very ornate it's
here's the
bedroom canopy bed a must have item
here's the [Music]
[Music]
desk here's the
kitchen which is actually not that
luxurious compared to the rest of the
house kitchen's honestly pretty average
stove that is all for today everyone
hope you guys enjoyed our journey
through shaing even though it was a very
hot weekend we still saw a lot of fun
stuff met some interesting people and I
hope you guys enjoyed it as much as we
did shaing is literally hano's nextdoor
neighbor so it deserved a video of its
own as well and see you guys next time
