>> Welcome to Leoning, China's northernmost
coastal province. My husband and I are
in our third month of our North China
bike tour and we're currently heading
northwest from the seaside city of
Dalian to the grasslands of Inner
Mongolia. In the previous vlog, we
explored pebble beaches, tide pools,
cliffs, and even the bottom of the sea.
And today, we're exploring our favorite

>> From friendly strangers to not so
friendly strangers.
From beautiful otherworldly landscapes
to places that are a little bit less
aesthetic, come along with us on our 300
km journey up the Leoning Peninsula.
Today's route begins in this quiet
little fishing village on the outskirts
of Dalian. Or maybe quiet is the wrong
word actually.
Oh my gosh, the geese mafia just blocked
a car. Did y'all see that? The geese
mafia is out in the street causing a ruckus.
And then there's this one straggler
who's like, "Wait a second. Why are we
escaping again, guys? Are we sure this
is worth it? I'd kind of rather just
take a nap." Anyway, many minutes of
chaos later, the owner finally showed up
and coralled her geese back into their
pen. Well, that was the most excitement
we've had all morning. It's the weird
and funny and interesting little
encounters like these that make us keep
taking detours off the main road to
explore villages and small towns. Yeah,
the main roads are faster and smoother
and whatever, but they don't have as
much character. And the smaller the
place, the more likely it is that the
residents have never seen a foreigner
before, which leads to all sorts of
Unfortunately, we're about to be having
a lot less interesting encounters with
kids because school is starting, but
we'll enjoy it while it lasts. We're
outside of a school right now and there
are a bunch of people like lined up
trying to find their child in this mass
of uniform children. Everyone is wearing
the exact same thing. This is not a
complaint, by the way. I think it's
great because in the US clothing in
school becomes such a snafu like all the
time. Anyways, there's a bunch of
parents lined up here and it's like,

Fascinating. Y'all check this out. This
family has loaded up their gate with
like every single good luck charm
possible. We got the monkey. We got the
get-rich triangle. We got a bonus
monkey. We got a bonus triangle. We got
the prosperity triangle. We got the
little the little guy. We got another
monkey. All over China, it's common to
find some sort of duad on people's gates
in rural areas for good luck or
prosperity or wealth or whatever. And
this really was our first encounter with
the monkeys. But unfortunately, their
habitat range is very limited. We
stopped seeing them the moment we left

Anyway, the next morning, Uncle Long
Eyelashes managed to procure us a lovely
brunch at the local Shinjang restaurant.
A lot of places we've been going don't
have these, but if there is one, he will
find it. And because most of them know
him from Doí, he's always getting free
meals everywhere. What better way to
start off the day's bike journey than
with some handpulled Qashqar style
noodles. The restaurant isn't even open
right now. She invited us here to make
>> This is actually a barbecue restaurant,
so handful noodles are not even on the
menu here. She made her own home cooking
for us. Is that not the cutest thing
ever? The noodles are here. H, that is
beautiful. After our noodle breakfast,
we began our journey from the east side
of the peninsula to the west. [Music]

That is Northeast hospitality for you.

random Chinese village. Sometimes I met
with a hello, sometimes with shock and

sometimes with free fruit. [Music]

we have come so far on this flyinfested
dirt road. We thought we were almost
done, but now the final boss is here.
How in the world are we going to get
through that? But I don't want to turn
back cuz we've been on this road for so
long. Mr. Sock Sandal has removed the
socks and is going in. Don't get a leech
or something, please. Oh my gosh. [Music]

Another hour along these quiet, empty
roads later, we finally made it to the
beach. Who doesn't love a beach? [Music]
There's not just a beach here. There's
also a temple. Over my seven years
living in China, I've been to more
temples than I can count. Not for a
religious purpose, but because I love
the architecture, and I especially love
the little guys. Little guys on roofs,
little guys on doorways, little guys on
railings, little guys everywhere. This
particular temple was actually in the
middle of roof renovations, so some of
the little guys were off of their perch
and laying on the ground. I've never
been able to observe the roof guys from
such a close distance. It was super cool
seeing them in so much detail. There was
an interesting ritual underway where you
pull a stick out of a cup and based on
the number of your stick, you are given

You may be wondering how having kids can
possibly be compatible with our current
nomadic lifestyle. I don't think it is
compatible, honestly, which is why we've
given ourselves about a year to complete
as much of this bike route as possible.
And then it's time to start a family.
For those of you who missed the previous
video and are wondering how we suddenly
got here so quickly from Dillian, that's
why. We don't have enough time, so we
have to skip over some regions. And now
we're here on the Leoning Coast biking
towards Inner Mongolia. Every square
inch of land where you can see even the
tiniest sliver of ocean, there is
seafood barbecue.
See, this restaurant here technically
does have an ocean view. Across the road
through this tiny opening in the trees,
you can in fact see the ocean. So,
oceanfront dining experience right here.
We will not be partaking. We actually
don't like seafood. I'm just here cuz I
like the beach. I don't know if y'all
can see it, but there is a grapesized
spider there hanging in the middle of
the bike lane.
Someone is going to get a face full of
spiders. Acceedon is doing a public
service, moving this spider out of the
road so nobody hits it. Look at that big boy.
Just our luck that the best sunset of
our entire time in Leon would happen
when we're passing through an industrial
district. Well, when life gives you
lemons, make lemonade. I'm still pretty
pleased with how these shots turned out. [Music]
[Music]
Dinner was our old friend, Lenjo
Noodles. What can I say, guys? If you
want to see food content, this vlog is
not the place. We just love our noodles,
and that's all we ever want. Once you've
tried handpulled noodles, there is no
going back, y'all. Regular noodles are
ruined for me forever.
We're here. This is the tallest building
we've stayed in since this bike tour
began. We are on the 25th floor. And I
hate to sound like a plea, but like
that's kind of scary, man. That's too
high. My little primate brain just
doesn't compute being in such a high
building. It's like what if it falls
down? The good thing about booking one
of these apartment hotels is you get
more space and it's cheaper. But the bad
thing is you have to hunt for it. Like
really hunt through the neighborhood. We
barely managed to find this building and
now we're in the building and we can't
go up the elevator because we don't have
the card. And how do we get the card? We
have to enter a password into this box.
I think it's this box. I feel like I'm
in an escape room right now. It's just
like too many steps to stay in this
little apartment. But we're doing it
anyway because it has a washing machine.
We want the washing machine. Okay,
Okay,
All of this for 125 g and beat. So, it's
worth the escape room experience to have
all of this. Actually, I didn't know it
had this many beds. I just saw washing
machine. So, we booked it. Very nice.
For the same price of a hotel room, you
can have a kitchen, multiple bedrooms, a
couch, even this cool little thing here.
It even comes with this borderline
useless helicopter ceiling fan. Anyway,
I bet you're all wondering what the view
looks like out the 25th floor. Sorry, I
forgot to film it, but believe me, it
was pretty nice. Good morning, friends,
from Leoning. It might look like we are
just in any old city, but actually,
we're right by the beach. You can tell
because even the public bathrooms have
[Music]
>> Oh my gosh, it's a chicken roller
coaster. But we're here at the wrong
time, so it's not going. And I'm so
disappointed. There's a couple over
there having like a breakup chat or
something, and it's like, I'm sorry to
interrupt, but I must film the chicken
roller coaster. Okay, that's enough city
life for now. Tonight, we're staying in
>> Today we are going to be experiencing a
rural homeay in a fishing village.
Unfortunately, you can't see the ocean
from here. There is kind of a road in
the way, but you can see all these boats
everywhere. So, I promise you it is legit.
>> Okay, here's our room.
Pretty nice. Well, the view leaves a bit
to be desired, but it's also like 90 remite.
remite.
Here is the resident cat. Love me a
friendly cat. Not one of those aloof,
hostile cats, you know. This cat sees
new people come through and it's like,
yeah, I want to meet you. Night has
fallen, so we are going for a little
stroll in the village to see what's
going on. Probably nothing, but that's
fine. Whether there is something or
Man, why don't they make boats this cute
anymore? Like, fine, if you're going to
modernize them, but look how cute this
is. Why don't we make boats like this anymore?
>> We at the dock cuz I wanted to look at
boats. And if you like boats, this is
the time to look at boats cuz they're
all here from May 1st to September 1st.
It is the no fishing season to let the
fish rest. Give the fish peace.
>> It is almost time for fishing season to
Two days left and then time's up, fish.
They're coming for you. The next
morning, we continued our journey
northward towards the coastal wetlands.
Got my second in-person spy accusation
right here in this grocery store. Come
on, Naomi. What is up with all the spy
accusations? We made it all the way
through Halong Dang and Dian without any
of this. And now here in Naing, it's
happened two times. We're crossing
through an area called Yingo. And this
place has more abandoned things than
everywhere else we've been combined.
This could have been something, but
alas, it is nothing. And the street is
full of student drivers. >> Hello.
>> Hello.
>> Hello. Because there's no one here, the
learners can go as slow as they want,
and no one will beep at them. Between
the abandoned buildings and the
aquaculture ponds that went on for
literally hours on end, we didn't really
get a chance to chat with anyone today.
So, unfortunately, my only encounter
with a local all day was being called us
>> like it has the layout of what could
have been a really big bustling city,
but it just doesn't have the people to
fill it in. A lot of the population of
the Northeast has moved to other
provinces or moved to the biggest cities
like Talian and Shenyang. So, this place
kind of got left in the dust. I'm not
saying there are no people here, but the
fact that the population could fit in a
space like 1/3 this size gives it a
slightly apocalyptic vibe. We bike north
for what felt like ages until we finally
reached the quote unquote normal part of
the city. Upon arrival, we were greeted
by the traffic accident board of shame,
which I suppose is here to remind you to
be a good driver, but I think it's a
little bit distracting to be honest. But
hey, whatever works, right? Okay, now
this place finally looks like a city.
And why are we never in a scenic place
when there's a good sunset? The next
morning, we traversed two more hours of
industrial parks and abandoned things.
And then we finally arrived at the
wetland park. We are here at the Red
Wetland Park. [Music]
[Music]
The scenery here feels like some alien
planet unlike anything else on Earth.
Just like autumn leaves, this plant also
changes color through the seasons. And
we're here at its peak time when its
vibrant red collides with the blue sky
and the white birds and the silly
looking mud skippers flopping around,
creating a beautiful and otherworldly panorama.
panorama. [Music]
I feel like wetlands are a highly
underrated ecosystem in this world.
Like, yeah, at a glance, there's not a
ton going on. It looks like it's just
grass and mud, but if you look up close,
there are so many little creatures in
there crawling around, and there are so
many birds. They create habitat. They
prevent erosion, and they're just
beautiful. What's not to love? The Red
Wetland Park is the finale to our
journey through the Leoning Peninsula.
After days of biking through cliffs,
fishing villages, beach towns,
semi-abandoned landscapes, boring
industrial parks, and even more boring
aquaculture ponds, we finally witnessed
this beautiful piece of art made by
Mother Nature herself. Yeah, I
encountered a few cranky people in ugly
places along the way, but there was also
so much beauty that came alongside it.
And these vlogs exist to show you the
full tapestry of life throughout all
sorts of random places in China. So,
thank you all for coming on this journey
with us through the good, the bad, and
the in between. Stay tuned, and I'll see
