this lecture is on safety
safety and
and
as usual i shall
here it is
and here's the week's modules
um there's a powerpoint on safety
heat illness regulation amendments
ag safety training
and i'm going to turn this off i'm not
going to have the summary paper here
so let's get started with the safety power
so we're talking about worker safety
industrial safety here
not food safety
which is
a different
but somewhat related issue so
so
why do we worry about safety
clearly that it is something that's
important to everybody
the individuals at work don't want to be
hurt they deserve to be able to work in
a protected environment they want to
continue to work and earn money
and not be laid up due to injury and not
able to
make an income where they can care for
their family enjoy their life whatever
being injured is no fun
and from an employer standpoint clearly
we want to
protect our employees we have training
and value invested in them and if we're
caring compassionate human beings we
don't want to see them hurt either
so just from an economic standpoint
there's huge benefit to keep your
regular trained workforce moving forward
and not
getting injured
but as a human being
in a position of an employer
you want to care for your employees but
also in a societal standpoint
what happens when we have injured
workers well they end up becoming
dependent upon
health care resources and other types of
resources and they're not contributing
to the
economic prosperity of the area they are um
not making money not making products not
making things
providing services that they otherwise would
would
and so it does have
a slight drain on an economy
and over
a number of individuals that drain can
be quite significant
we want people to be healthy
so you got to remember this
guaranteed you need to know if it is not
written down
it never happened period
and that's an important thing to remember
in the eyes of the law
you can't just say well i trained my
employees on that they shouldn't have
been hurt
oh what date did you have the training
show me your training records
up those are your training records
where's the signatures of all of the employees
they're checking on my car warranty no doubt
doubt anyway
anyway
um where are the signatures of all the
employees who attended that training
you need a written record of
everything you do in safety or in the
eyes of the law it never happened
it's not written down it never happened
so as a company you need to protect yourself
yourself
as an employee you need to insist on
proper records if you go to a training
and you see something
you should get
an agenda and you should sign that
agenda and if they are asking you to
sign something that they didn't do
well we didn't really get around to that
you know they got nine things on the
agenda and they only really did three of them
don't sign it
they have
nine things and they got to eight of
them don't sign it
you are telling
the legal system telling your company
just say fine give me another
copy of the agenda to sign because this
one we didn't do
you got to be careful as an employer
document everything as an employee
make sure you're paying attention when
you sign things so
so
you are responsible wherever you are
everybody is responsible for safety
whether you're the employer whether
you're a shift supervisor whether you're
one of the workers in a department
everything you do not just on a farm but
in a manufacturing facility even in
human resources and finance i why do i
have to worry about workers safety and
finance what do they do sit at a
computer all day
yeah and they need a workstation that is
comfortable and conducive to long-term
health you don't want bad chairs bad
computer workstations set up where
people get things like carpal tunnel
syndrome and other things that
liability you might think wow that's
just too expensive for one of those
ergonomic chairs a good office chair is
super expensive
i got this one already in the back this
wooden piece of junk that's free it's
sitting right here sit in it do your work
work
or you know a desk i'm gonna your
computer workstation is a desk without a uh
uh properly
properly
designed keyboard station you're not
supposed to work on a keyboard way the
hell up here
you're supposed to work on a keyboard
that is
what is it i think it's like four to
eight inches above your lap or something
i forget exactly what it is but it's
and the keyboard is supposed to be so
that your hands can't do that you can
see me here your hands are
are
gently curved or straight none of this
where you're on a keyboard
that's part of worker safety
everybody everywhere in every job
deserves a safe comfortable work
environment period
and i guarantee you the most expensive
reasonable chair
is way less expensive than a workers
comp claim so
so
worker safety the resources devoted to
the task
you can see this person here is uh
welding something underneath this truck
looks like next to the gas tank that
sounds good let's weld next to the gas
tank while it's propped up on two by fours
fours
so what amount of resources did
this particular individual apply to the
task well a couple of two by fours
a welder and
about four brain cells
you can't do things that are not safe
poor decisions can be made at any moment
absolutely freaking stupid
this is a
broken ankle or a broken pelvis just
you find better solutions
there are always better solutions than
than [Music]
[Music]
spraying sparks all over
highly explosive material
do employees stay safe on breaks and
bummer
why lizards should never bungee jump
a lot of uh
high-end employees or you know you hear
about it in sports but even
individuals high up in a company might
have clauses in their contracts that say
no no no no you're not going to be a
skydiver you're not going to be
a motorcycle racer you're not going to
do any of these things because you're
too valuable to the company and
and that's
that's
only special cases when you see those
kinds of contracts because they
tend to be
controversial unless it clearly is somebody
somebody who
who
the sports team or the company
totally depends on
and can't really be replaced in a
reasonable fashion and
and still
still
when your employees go home do you want
them to be thinking about safety too do
you want this mindset
employees who think about safety even
when they're not being forced to be safe
are more likely to be safe and thinking
about safety on the job
and that doesn't mean that somebody who
races motocross or climbs
half dome the face of half dome on their
vacations doesn't
but there's a difference in how certain
people approach it you want them to be
so what does it feel like if you are in
charge of safety
so there you see an uh white jacket
there in the middle
the safety manager
and all of the obstacles in the way
there's so many things to think about there's
there's
the ergonomic safety like i talked about
or lifting properly in the warehouse
there's chemical safety
pesticide safety there's safety around
heavy machinery there's electrical
safety there's safety when pedestrians
are near forklifts and on and on and on
there are so many different things that
you have to think about so many things
you have to deal with trainings and postings
postings and
and
repairs and maintenance that need to be
made for safety purposes
purchasing of equipment
and keeping that within your budget and
it can be a nightmare to be in charge of safety
safety
and i've been in a position where
i wasn't completely in charge of all
safety but i had to document it and
create what's called the risk management plan
plan
and the
emergency response plan for a company
and each one of those
was a pair of four-inch binders filled
so we're talking
uh 16 inches on the shelf of
things that i had to compile and
write and
map and whatever
and that's just to document a piece
a big piece mind you but a piece of
the safety requirements at that company
i wasn't involved in the day-to-day
trainings of the the workers in the
field for
proper safety when they're out there
harvesting strawberries or
transplanting or driving the tractor
so
federal safety laws farm operators and
family members are exempt from coverage
under most federal safety laws
regulations relating to agriculture
does that mean there are no laws for
safety oh hell no again like i've said
in the past and i'll say again when it
comes to agriculture
you read the laws
and it'll always say except for
agriculture and then you have to look
what is
what is the
different rule for agriculture
now it also applies to family
owned operations and their immediate
family members so if i have my own farm
and my own kids
the rules get a little bit murky what
can i and can't i do but most federal
laws don't apply
we're doing our own stuff on our own
farm we're responsible for our own
safety for the most part
now there are things you can't do you can't
can't
use pesticides in an unsafe manner just
because it's your farm or it's your kids
uh so there are things that apply but they
they
are a little different
in how they are applied so you got to be
the
fair labor standards act
the fair labor standards act does a
number of things it restricts child labor
labor
it restricts the type of work for young
workers that they can do which
in a lot of areas of agriculture it
feels like they can't do anything
because it's all restricted which isn't
completely true but in the eyes of a lot
of companies
that's the way they view it i'm not
going to deal with young workers because
i can't have them do damn near anything
and if they accidentally decide on their own
own
to do this well i finish this task i i
should do that i know it needs to be
done they might
step into an area where they're not
supposed to be or do something they're
and how child labor works how
job titles that are acceptable for child
labor works
is different when you're talking about agriculture
in general most agricultural occupations
are considered
now
where do you draw the line
it usually gets really dicey under the
age of 16
and so unless it's a direct family
member working on the farm of the family
i haven't known of somebody working
under 16
in a long time
it's been many years
uh outside of maybe some
high school internship in the front
office or something like that but
but
under 16 is
pretty rough so there's this narrow window
window
16-18 where we're usually talking about
these young workers
16 is often considered old enough to be
starting the in the workforce and in
many cases it is
but too young to be an adult and
therefore you've got these
challenging situations what can i have a
16 or 17 year old do
and because of insurance liability
issues a lot of companies just say screw
it we're not going to do it period
and for some jobs they might even have
different limits so if you're driving a vehicle
vehicle
it's often 25 that is the
maturity age that
has been arbitrarily determined by
insurance companies that
that
you want somebody working
in a capacity where they're driving one
of your cars
we're going to charge you for it
and we're going to charge you a lot for
it and so to keep insurance premiums
down that is often the policy used by
so let's take a quick break just a
