0:02 here are three essential tips to learn
0:04 foreign languages faster and easier
0:06 before i get started i just want to
0:08 mention that all of these tips are also
0:09 available on my website ryan's
0:12 languagetips.com if you want even more
0:13 tips for how to study more efficiently
0:15 and faster then be sure to check out my
0:17 blog posts on my website so tip number one
0:18 one
0:21 is focus on phrases and sentences now i
0:23 think we can all agree that there's no
0:25 perfect way to learn a language and i
0:26 mean even here on youtube a lot of
0:28 people disagree on what the best method
0:30 might be in my opinion one of the
0:31 fastest ways that you can really
0:33 progress in a language is by focusing on
0:35 learning phrases and sentences let me
0:37 give you a little example of how i was
0:38 able to use this tip to really jump
0:41 start my chinese learning so about three
0:43 years ago before i even started studying
0:45 chinese i was playing a video game
0:46 called pubg
0:48 and i noticed that i had a lot of
0:50 chinese teammates and they would often
0:53 communicate usually in chinese now it
0:55 was a bit frustrating for me to not be
0:56 able to communicate with them so what i
0:58 ended up doing was i went online and i
1:00 looked up some really simple phrases in
1:03 chinese phrases like let's go
1:05 or follow me and at the time i had
1:07 absolutely zero understanding of how to
1:09 pronounce words in chinese or chinese
1:13 grammar or anything of that sort
1:19 now watch this as soon as i say
1:21 something in chinese they're all going
1:32 i simply just tried to copy exactly how
1:34 the phrases sounded to the best of my
1:36 ability and i would repeat them over and
1:38 over to my teammates saying things like
1:41 let's go now two things happened as a
1:43 result of this number one my chinese
1:45 teammates got really excited whenever i
1:47 would try and say phrases their
1:49 excitement gave me a lot of inspiration
1:50 to keep learning new phrases and keep
1:52 trying and testing different sentences
1:55 that i learned the second thing was some
1:56 of the teammates that i met in game
1:58 would later add me as a friend and we
1:59 would play multiple games and by playing
2:01 multiple games with someone i would
2:02 start to develop a friendship with them
2:04 and we would be able to help each other
2:06 in our different languages now keep in
2:08 mind this is day one of me learning
2:10 chinese now you're probably saying what
2:12 about grammar or tones those things are
2:14 extremely important you need to know
2:17 those well that's absolutely correct
2:19 but what i realized was after learning
2:21 sentences and phrases for a while i was
2:23 eventually able to pick apart certain
2:25 grammar points such as past tense and
2:27 things like that i think this method of
2:29 picking apart sentences and phrases that
2:31 you learn is a lot more interesting than
2:34 learning single words or single grammar
2:35 points at one time and based on my
2:38 example from playing pub g i was able to
2:39 use those phrases and sentences i
2:42 learned immediately if i just spent the
2:43 first day learning individual words i
2:45 don't think it would be very useful to
2:48 go on pub g and say to a chinese person
2:52 fiji
2:54 so in conclusion i think learning
2:56 phrases and sentences can be a great way
2:58 to start studying a language and you can
2:59 focus on learning grammar and
3:02 pronunciation kind of as you go filling
3:04 in the gaps so to speak because at the
3:06 end of the day you can't be perfect when
3:08 you're learning a language it doesn't
3:10 matter who you are everyone's going to
3:12 make mistakes and that's completely
3:13 normal the important thing is that
3:15 you're talking and practicing from day
3:19 one so tip number two repetition is
3:21 absolutely essential so repetition is a
3:23 pretty common theme for language
3:25 learners i know for myself personally i
3:27 cannot learn a phrase one time and then
3:29 remember it forever i need to see that
3:33 phrase 10 11 12 times i need to repeat
3:35 it back to myself and say it over and
3:36 over again so that way i really
3:43 and i think a lot of people who use
3:44 textbooks to study kind of fall into
3:46 this trap where they learn something
3:48 once and then they completely forget it
3:49 by the time they move on to the next
3:51 topic if you really want to remember
3:53 something you need to be practicing it a
3:55 lot and this applies to a lot of
3:57 different parts of learning a language
3:59 learning how to pronounce a word
4:01 learning a certain phrase learning just
4:03 a word in general all of these things
4:06 require a lot of repetition in order for
4:08 you to actually really get it cemented
4:09 in your brain
4:11 call me crazy but i often walk around my
4:13 house repeating phrases to myself that i
4:15 had just learned in a foreign language i
4:16 try and repeat them with correct
4:18 pronunciation and repeat them in a
4:20 natural manner and by doing this i'm
4:22 able to actually use that phrase when i
4:24 need to in conversation with someone and
4:30 [Applause]
4:32 and just going back to my last example
4:33 for a second this actually really helps
4:35 when learning phrases too if you're
4:37 repeating a phrase often and practicing
4:38 it with people often you're gonna
4:40 remember it but if you just read it once
4:42 from a book and expect to remember it
4:44 that's probably not gonna happen anyways
4:46 key point of the second tip repetition
4:48 is key and practice repetition whenever
4:50 you can practice phrases around your
4:52 house practice pronunciation when you're
4:54 out walking practice new words you
4:57 learned when you're in the bathroom
4:59 the third and final tip and i've kind of
5:00 already mentioned this already is
5:02 practice what you've actually learned
5:04 what is the point of learning a language
5:06 if you're not actually going to use what
5:08 you've learned in a real world situation
5:10 and with the internet today there are so
5:11 many good ways to be able to practice
5:13 with people it's crazy let's say you
5:14 learn some new phrases and you really
5:16 want to practice them well like i've
5:17 already mentioned you have video games
5:19 as an option two of my favorite video
5:22 games to practice are pub g and vr chat
5:24 in addition to video games you also have
5:27 language exchange apps so two ones that
5:28 i've heard that are pretty good are
5:30 hellotalk and tandem and the best part
5:31 of these apps is that you're meeting
5:32 people that share the interest of
5:34 language learning with you so it's far
5:36 more likely that they'll be very patient
5:38 with you and very understanding when
5:40 you're practicing it also means you can
5:42 get direct feedback on what you say and
5:44 again this direct feedback will help you
5:46 build so much confidence in your
5:47 language learning journey if you want to
5:50 step it up a notch you can use apps like
5:51 omegle or ometv
5:53 i will say you do have to be careful on
5:55 these apps there are certainly people on
5:56 there that do not want to practice
5:58 languages and i will leave it there but
6:00 it's really hard to beat because you're
6:02 connecting directly with native speakers
6:04 of certain languages this gives you the
6:05 opportunity to practice with native
6:07 speakers from the comfort of your own
6:09 home not to mention you're basically
6:10 having a real life conversation with
6:12 someone so it'll help you become more
6:13 comfortable when you actually are
6:15 talking to people in real life as well
6:18 the last option is you can go laoshu or
6:20 xiaoma style and just go out in public
6:21 and start talking to people now don't
6:23 get me wrong this can be very awkward
6:25 and embarrassing for people but it can
6:27 also lead to so many awesome outcomes as
6:29 well oddly enough when i was in china in
6:32 2019 i was out by myself walking through
6:34 a night market in a local part of town i
6:36 was probably the only foreigner in the
6:38 entire area but i said you know what i'm
6:39 going to speak some chinese to people
6:42 and at the time my chinese was not good
6:44 but regardless i went up to the food
6:45 stall with dumplings and i said to the man
6:46 man nihal
6:52 and the guy working the food stall got
6:54 so excited and so interested and he
6:56 started asking me all these questions
6:57 there was also a family to my right that
6:59 overheard it too and they were very
7:00 surprised and so then they began asking
7:03 me questions and in broken chinese i was
7:04 talking to them and trying my best to
7:06 communicate what ended up happening was
7:08 the family actually invited me to their
7:10 store for dinner so we headed on over to
7:12 their store and i got to have some great
7:14 food and enjoy some drinks as well and
7:16 of course the guy introduced me to his
7:17 whole family and he made me take a
7:29 and then after we were finished eating
7:31 he showed me around that entire part of
7:33 town and keep in mind all this happened
7:35 simply because i tried to speak a few
7:37 words of chinese now i'm not saying
7:38 that's going to happen for everybody but
7:40 some awesome things really can happen
7:42 when you immerse yourself in a foreign
7:44 language anyways i hope you enjoyed
7:45 these three tips and be sure to check
7:47 out my website ryan's language tips for
