0:36 there's a link in the
0:38 description amongst the many literary
0:40 genres that georgea Martin has mixed
0:42 into A Song of Ice and Fire is the
0:45 classic who done it or murder mystery we
0:47 have the attempt on Bran's life and The
0:49 Saga of the cats pow dagger the
0:51 successful murder of John Aaron where
0:53 the reader is kept in the dark as to who
0:56 done it for a long time and so on on
0:58 both of those examples we think we now
1:00 have some kind of resolution but on the
1:03 attempted murder of Tyrion we don't
1:05 which doesn't stop us guessing of course
1:07 and indeed it doesn't stop Tyrion
1:09 himself from trying to work out who was
1:11 behind it but first let's quickly remind
1:14 ourselves of the scene stannis's Fleet
1:16 and forces are attacking King's Landing
1:19 and Tyrion who is leading the defense of
1:21 King's Landing has launched his cunning
1:23 plan with the wildfire and the chain
1:25 across the mouth of the river that
1:28 worked as planned but still stannis's
1:29 forces are taking the fight to the
1:32 Lannisters in fact at this stage it
1:34 looks like they might win the Defenders
1:36 of King's Landing are starting to panic
1:38 and flee in their hundreds turning on
1:41 their own commanders even the Hound has
1:43 quit the battle and now the wrecks of
1:45 several ships have Tangled together on
1:47 the Blackwater forming a bridge of sorts
1:49 over the river allowing even more of
1:51 stannis's forces to cross over and
1:54 attack the city in the last desperate
1:57 move Tyrion himself leads a
1:59 Counterattack finding himself on that
2:01 bridge of ships which is now breaking
2:05 apart he falls and sandon Moore the
2:06 member of the King's Guard who had been
2:08 by his side throughout the battle offers
2:11 his hand to help then with no warning
2:15 attacks Tyrion Tyrion Dodges but still
2:17 gets cut across the face that's how he
2:20 loses his nose and gets that scar pod
2:22 who is also there comes to the rescue
2:24 and sandon ends up sinking to the bottom
2:27 of the river weighed down by his armor
2:30 okay so that's what happened let's start
2:32 our investigation by considering the
2:36 simplest candidate of all sandon himself
2:38 is it likely that he just decided to use
2:40 the chaos of the battle to kill Tyrion
2:43 for his own reasons Tyrion doesn't think
2:45 so instantly deciding that he had never
2:48 done sandon any harm that might have
2:50 provoked that which is probably Fair
2:52 although he hadn't exactly been a friend
2:54 to him when Tyrion first arrived at
2:57 King's Landing as acting hand he had to
2:59 threaten sandon with Brun and shagger to
3:00 gain access access to the council
3:02 chamber and after that rioting King's
3:04 Landing earlier in the book he had tried
3:07 to shame sandon for leaving Sansa behind
3:10 although that came to nothing because as
3:12 Cersei pointed out he did so in order to
3:14 protect the King which was his duty as a
3:17 member of the King's Guard so on balance
3:20 Tyrion is probably right here he may not
3:22 have been a particular Ally for sandon
3:24 but he also hadn't done anything so bad
3:27 to him that might make sandon Risk
3:29 Everything to try to kill him might
3:31 there be some other motive we don't know
3:34 about we can't discount it his entire
3:36 character is set up as a bit of a
3:38 mystery Sansa thinks that he has a
3:41 curiously Dead face and jaim thought
3:43 that he was the most dangerous member of
3:45 the King's Guard save himself because
3:47 his face never gave a hint of his
3:50 intentions we don't know much about his
3:52 background he was brought to King's
3:54 Landing by John Aaron and appointed to
3:56 the King's Guard by Robert Baratheon but
3:59 neither particularly liked him he also
4:00 wasn't particular particularly close to
4:02 any of his brothers in the King's Guard
4:06 all in all a bit of a mystery so perhaps
4:07 at some point we'll learn more but for
4:10 now there is no actual reason to think
4:12 he did have any motive to kill Tyrion
4:14 hence Tyrion being convinced that
4:18 someone had hired him to do it but who
4:21 well the truth is that Tyrion made a lot
4:22 of enemies in King's Landing in his
4:24 short time there so the list of
4:27 potential suspects is quite long but his
4:29 first thought was Cersei and it's easy
4:32 to see why the two of them had been at
4:34 loggerheads all of tyrion's life she had
4:37 been a terror to him when he was a child
4:39 and now as adults things had got even
4:41 more serious for almost all of a Clash
4:44 of Kings Tyrion had been undermining her
4:47 power base foiling her plots sending her
4:49 daughter to Dawn behind her back
4:51 threatening Joffrey and tommen and
4:53 countless other things and just before
4:56 the battle she had retaliated by taking
4:58 Alaya the sex worker she thought was
5:01 tyrion's mistress captive to keep Tyrion
5:03 from harming tommen Tyrion took this
5:06 very badly uttering a line that Cersei
5:09 will later remember vividly I have never
5:11 liked you Cersei but you were my own
5:14 sister so I never did you harm you've
5:17 ended that I will hurt you for this I
5:20 don't know how yet but give me time a
5:22 day will come when you think yourself
5:25 safe and happy and suddenly your joy
5:28 will turn to ashes in your mouth and
5:30 you'll know that the debt is
5:34 paid in tyrion's mind hiring sandon was
5:36 her moving to kill him before he could
5:38 go through with that threat Tyrion says
5:42 that he knows it was her in his gut she
5:44 is the first person he thinks to blame
5:46 and he never wavers from that view in
5:49 fact all this is actually rather unlike
5:51 Tyrion who is normally very Analytical
5:52 in his approach working through the
5:55 options he doesn't do that here he just
5:58 feels in his gut that it was her then
6:00 tries to find evidence to support that
6:02 it's a subtle insight into how although
6:04 Tyrion is very intellectual in his
6:07 approach to many things when it comes to
6:11 his family his emotions run High Cersei
6:13 definitely has motive and means to do it
6:15 and of course there's no question that
6:17 Cersei is capable of murder but there
6:19 are a couple of pretty strong arguments
6:21 against it the first of which Tyrion
6:24 himself has to acknowledge although
6:26 Cersei does have a lot of control over
6:28 the King's Guard and as queen regent
6:30 they would follow her orders sandan
6:33 Moore is an odd choice to give the task
6:36 to Marin Trant was loyal to her and
6:38 Boris Blount was when he was there and
6:41 Tyrion thinks Osmond kettleblack was too
6:43 but not mandon Moore he seemed to be
6:46 just loyal to the king second we have
6:48 the evidence that just after that point
6:50 in the battle Lancel Lannister reports
6:53 to Cersei that the battle was lost and
6:55 she responds by telling him to find
6:58 Tyrion and tell him not what you'd
7:00 expect her to say if she thought Tyrion
7:02 likely already dead and although we see
7:05 that from sansa's POV we do later of
7:07 course get 12 chapters of cersei's own
7:10 point of view it's not Beyond georgea
7:12 Martin to simply not have her think
7:14 about her attempt to murder Tyrion in
7:16 these chapters he famously kept a lot of
7:17 information back from us readers when we
7:20 had Ned's POV chapters in book one for
7:22 example but it is noticeable that she
7:25 never once thinks about this even when
7:27 you might think that she probably would
7:29 she has 10 chapters in The Feast for
7:31 crows and two more in Her Dance with
7:33 Dragons and in those chapters she spends
7:36 a lot of time worrying about Tyrion in
7:38 general putting a ransom on his head and
7:40 remembering the prophecy of the valon
7:43 car thinking Tyrion is trying to or
7:46 going to kill her if she had once tried
7:48 to kill him and failed wouldn't she
7:52 think about it then it seems likely so
7:54 although there isn't any evidence to say
7:57 that Cersei definitely wasn't involved
7:58 there also isn't much evidence to
8:01 suggest that she was tyrion's knee-jerk
8:03 accusation of her seems much more to do
8:05 with his feelings than with his
8:08 analytical mind so who else might it
8:11 have been step forward Joffrey Tyrion of
8:13 course has never really gotten along
8:16 with Joffrey nor vice versa while Cersei
8:19 Robert jimie and nly the entire court
8:21 enabled or turned a blind eye to
8:23 Joffrey's worst behaviors Tyrion was
8:26 nearly alone in standing up to him
8:28 Tyrion has slapped Joffrey twice both
8:30 times in front of others meaning the
8:32 stinged his pride must have hurt even
8:35 more the second time was after the riot
8:37 in King's Landing which saw Tyrion
8:39 blamed Joffrey for inciting the crowd
8:41 which he almost certainly was indeed
8:44 guilty of Tyrion called Joffrey stupid
8:46 and slapped him several times not just
8:49 once Joffrey was incensed and there are
8:51 other times where Tyrion made Joffrey
8:54 look stupid or small even in that very
8:55 Battle of the Blackwater where Tyrion
8:58 reaches up to snap Joffrey's visor shut
9:00 basically telling him off for keeping on
9:03 opening it so Joffrey had reason to
9:05 dislike his uncle and he also has form
9:07 in hiring someone to murder for him he's
9:10 the prime suspect in hiring the cator
9:12 Assassin to attack bran that was before
9:15 he was King but now he is King he
9:17 doesn't actually have to hire anyone
9:19 anymore he can just tell a member of the
9:21 King's Guard to do it he frequently used
9:23 the King's Guard to beat and humiliate
9:26 Sansa who he was betrothed to so is it
9:27 really a stretch of the imagination to
9:30 think he would tell man Moore to kill
9:32 his uncle Tyrion Mand Moore has shown
9:35 that he was loyal to Joffrey so it makes
9:36 sense that he would choose him and
9:40 sandon would obey without question like
9:43 his mother Joffrey thus has motive means
9:45 and proven willingness to murder through
9:49 others but also no actual evidence
9:51 against him we should probably note at
9:53 this point that the TV show heavily
9:56 hinted that it was Joffrey Tyrion and
9:58 Cersei basically have a conversation
10:01 about it all and she says it wasn't her
10:03 and the only other person with authority
10:04 to order the King's Guard to do
10:08 something like that was Joffrey so well
10:10 that obviously worked for the TV show
10:11 but it doesn't necessarily mean that
10:13 it's the case in the books so let's look
10:17 at our third candidate little finger
10:19 whether Peter Bish is capable of murder
10:21 is of course not a question at all he
10:24 quite clearly is just look at John Aaron
10:26 and his motivation to kill Tyrion is
10:28 also fairly straightforward little
10:30 finger framed Tyrion for the attack on
10:33 bran with that dagger and Tyrion
10:35 basically tells him to his face that he
10:38 knows Tyrion then also outmaneuvered him
10:40 in court politics when lying to him
10:42 about potential marriages for tommen and
10:44 Mella and perhaps most importantly of
10:46 all to little finger Tyrion was in line
10:49 to be marrying Sansa and by this point
10:51 Littlefinger had already developed an
10:54 unhealthy obsession with her yes at this
10:56 point Sansa was still engaged to Joffrey
10:58 but little finger was the one who would
11:00 just NE negotiated to bring the tyrells
11:02 into an alliance with the Lannisters
11:04 with margerie marrying Joffrey he was
11:06 clever enough to realize that tywin's
11:09 next play would be to marry Sansa to
11:11 Tyrion instead to forge A Lannister
11:13 claim to Winterfell simply put Tyrion
11:16 was an obstacle to littlefinger's goals
11:18 several of them Tyrion dying would
11:21 create that bit more chaos and
11:24 Littlefinger loved chaos there is
11:26 another angle here too sandon Moore's
11:28 rise to the King's Guard has always been
11:30 a bit of a history as we've noted he
11:32 came to King's Landing with John Aaron
11:35 but John didn't really like him and was
11:37 appointed to the King's Guard by Robert
11:39 Baratheon even though Robert didn't
11:41 really like him either it's hard to rise
11:43 that far in King's Landing without an
11:47 influential supporter so who was it
11:50 Littlefinger another Veil man is the
11:52 most obvious choice and if Littlefinger
11:55 was sandon's sponsor then it makes sense
11:57 that he could tell sandon to kill Tyrion
12:01 if he so wished incidentally I know some
12:02 have said that it couldn't be
12:03 Littlefinger because he was away from
12:05 King's Landing in the build up to this
12:07 moment but I don't think that's really
12:09 an issue here he managed to help
12:11 orchestrate Joffrey's murder and sansa's
12:13 escape a few months later while also
12:15 apparently being absent from King's
12:18 Landing he can be quite resourceful can
12:20 Littlefinger anyway if I had to guess at
12:23 this stage I would guess that it was
12:25 little finger who told sandon to kill
12:27 Tyrion sandon himself doesn't seem to
12:30 have much of a motive circumstantial
12:32 evidence seems to weigh against Cersei
12:33 and although it's the kind of thing
12:36 Joffrey would do surely even he wouldn't
12:38 order the death of the person in charge
12:40 of Defending King's Landing while King's
12:43 Landing was actually under attack little
12:47 finger however would ultimately Georg AR
12:50 Martin hasn't told us yet Perhaps all
12:52 will be revealed in a future book but
12:55 for now we will have to rely on educated
12:58 guesswork so who do you think ordered
12:59 tyrion's death
13:01 do you agree that little finger seems
13:03 most likely or do you have someone else
13:05 in mind let me know in the comments
