0:03 when we got married I took a box of
0:04 light bulbs to the hotel and made them
0:07 change all the light
0:09 bulbs hi I'm Brandon Shubert I'm an
0:11 interior designer and today I'm going to
0:13 show you how to design and execute a
0:14 lighting scheme for your [Music]
0:25 home I love designing lighting for
0:27 interiors first of all the room has to
0:29 work so you need function but more
0:31 importantly lighting gives the room its
0:33 energy and its atmosphere once the sun
0:35 has gone down we're here today at a
0:37 project in South London that I designed
0:39 to look at the lighting schemes how
0:42 we've designed them and how they work in
0:47 space let's look at lighting a sitting
0:49 room I always started lighting design
0:51 with a floor plan if you don't have a
0:53 professional floor plan like we do and
0:54 you can always sketch something out on
0:57 graph paper or with a scale rule if you
0:59 want someone told me once that the most
1:00 important rule of lighting design is to
1:04 light objects and surfaces not space
1:05 there's something about seeing a room
1:07 from above that allows you to sort of
1:09 visualize the object you're trying to
1:10 light rather than the space as you're
1:13 standing in it the other thing to think
1:14 about is lighting different levels of a
1:16 room so we have ceiling lights which are
1:18 above your head we might have wall
1:20 lights at eye level and we might have
1:22 table lamps at below eye level but it's
1:24 important to get lighting at all of
1:25 those levels so that a room feels
1:27 natural and sort of immersive when
1:30 you're standing in it at night these two
1:32 lights by the bookcase they're washing
1:34 the front of the bookcases down so that
1:36 you get a glow on the books themselves
1:43 ground the two decorative wall lights
1:44 either side are giving you a really
1:46 subtle glow and in fact I put a very low
1:48 wattage bulp in those and I also have
1:50 put a Goldline shade on them so that
1:52 they just give you a warm hint of light
1:54 but they're not doing anything really
1:56 they're just giving you ambient light
1:58 I've got a track running on the
2:00 horizontal side of this wall
2:03 all the way down one side so that those
2:07 lights can point at the wall
2:09 opposite so they're providing that
2:11 surface with a glow at
2:14 night I love table lamps you know I
2:16 could buy table lamps all day I spend my
2:18 days on eBay buying up vasas and turning
2:20 them into lamps it's one of the joys of
2:22 my my design career think about them as
2:24 a great accessory for making your
2:27 lighting scheme feel varied and feel
2:28 decorative because they have great
2:30 decorative value in addition to being a
2:33 source of light the floor lamp by the
2:35 chair is giving you the ability to sit
2:37 there and read a book in the evening and
2:38 it's also giving you height and what
2:41 would otherwise be a fairly empty Corner
2:43 I've also put a large floor lamp by this
2:46 easy chair in the corner because again
2:49 you want that height to sort of fill the [Music]
2:52 [Music]
2:53 space now we're going to look at
2:56 lighting a kitchen and dining
2:58 space it's very often the case that your
3:01 kitchen and a dining space are connected
3:03 so we think about lighting those two
3:05 elements together when you're lighting a
3:06 kitchen the first thing to think about
3:08 is Task lighting kitchens are all about
3:11 function in a kitchen I use down lights
3:13 to light a surface that we're going to
3:15 be using to work so if you think about a
3:17 kitchen island for example it is
3:19 important that that Island be lit
3:21 uniformly and it be lit from more than
3:23 one direction so you don't end up with
3:24 uncomfortable Shadows that get in your
3:26 way when you're trying to work because
3:28 this is quite a narrow room we can't
3:31 really have table lamps and other
3:33 decorative fittings on that side so
3:35 again I've settled For Recess down
3:38 lights shining on those walls just to
3:41 give them a glow and here as
3:44 well when you're buying a downlight you
3:45 often times have a choice of getting a
3:47 fix downlight or getting one that will
3:50 tilt and it's much better to wash a wall
3:52 with light than it is just to pour light
3:54 down onto the floor but what do you do
3:55 when you want to set the mood for a
3:57 dinner party or an evening where you're
3:59 having friends over and people are going
4:01 to be in the connected room looking at
4:03 the kitchen I've used under counter
4:07 lighting under the cupboards above if
4:09 possible I use LED strips and I like to
4:11 position them at the front edge of the
4:13 cupboards above so that they don't cast
4:15 a funny Shadow when they shine down on
4:18 the splashback behind the work toop and
4:20 running along the
4:24 top lighting up onto the
4:26 ceiling they can both be turned down on
4:28 a dimmer switch to just provide a soft
4:31 glow that just accentuates the room
4:33 without lighting it up brightly so in
4:34 the dining room again we're going to
4:36 start with the furniture plan as the
4:38 driver of where things go clearly the
4:40 dining table's in the center of the room
4:43 and we want a pendant over the dining
4:45 table what I like about this light is
4:46 not only does it have a lot of character
4:48 as an antique light fitting but these
4:51 Vaseline Glass Shades hide the bulbs a
4:53 bit and soften the light giving it a
4:55 little bit more moodiness a little bit
4:57 more diffused character dimmers are
4:59 especially important in a dining room
5:01 you always want to be able to turn that
5:03 Central light over the dining table down
5:05 to a very low level when you're having a
5:08 meal we then have space for furniture
5:10 all the way around the outside so we
5:12 have two pieces of furniture either side
5:15 of the chimney breast and a sideboard
5:17 running along this wall so I've taken
5:20 the opportunity to put table lamps on
5:25 furniture the other thing I think about
5:27 all the time with table lamps is the
5:29 size and shape that they are I try not
5:31 to put a very heavy table lamp on a very
5:33 small table because I think it's out of
5:35 proportion if you can get the balance
5:37 into the right place where the table
5:39 lamp sits comfortably on the thing that
5:42 it's on it will feel more
5:44 natural that's all the light fittings we
5:46 have in this room table lamps and the
5:48 central light over the dining room that
5:49 said that there's plenty of opportunity
5:51 to bring in candles and other kinds of
5:54 lights when the mood
5:57 requires let's talk about how to light a
5:59 bedroom I think anytime you enter a room
6:01 room you want a light switch that
6:02 operates at least one light in a room
6:05 and bedrooms are no
6:07 different so in this bedroom I've
6:08 started with a ceiling
6:11 light which I positioned in the center
6:13 of the room by the way an interesting
6:15 way to find the center of a room if
6:17 you're in doubt is to draw a line from
6:20 one corner to the other Corner in a
6:22 diagonal and then draw another diagonal
6:24 line from that corner to the other
6:26 Corner which ignores a chimney breast
6:27 and one of the things people often
6:29 mistake is they take the center line
6:31 from the chimney breast to the other
6:35 wall rather than doing it with an X so I
6:36 started with a central ceiling light in this
6:37 this
6:40 room I've also added a 5 amp circuit to
6:42 control the lamps in this room this is a
6:44 way that you can control table lamps by
6:47 a switch I'm making a small symbol which
6:50 is for a 5 amp socket showing how those
6:53 lamps will be switched and we put two
6:56 bedside lamps either side of the bed and
6:58 these are not operated on the 5 amp
7:02 circuit they're switched on the lamps
7:04 themselves the choice of light bulbs is
7:06 super important to the way a table lamp
7:08 or any light fitting works I personally
7:11 like most table lamps to be on a lower
7:12 wattage bulb so that they're just
7:15 providing a warm yellow
7:17 glow I also really pay attention to color
7:18 color
7:20 temperature I really try to avoid
7:23 anything above 2700 de Kelvin I stay
7:25 away from 3,000 and I definitely stay
7:27 away from 4,000 because they put out a
7:34 in this small bedroom which is a cozy
7:36 intimate space I wanted to make sure we
7:40 got a variety of different types of
7:42 Lights in this room in terms of circuits
7:44 I've broken the ceiling light and the
7:45 wall lights
7:48 up you can turn those wall lights on so
7:49 that they greet people as they come up
7:51 the stairs and it isn't just a dark room
7:54 but it equally isn't a fully lit
7:57 room I've also put a single bedside lamp
7:59 between the single beds which is not
8:02 Switched at the door but is instead
8:04 switched on the lamp
8:07 itself with a bedside lamp the height is
8:08 super important you don't want to be
8:10 distracted by the glare of a light bulb
8:11 as you're trying to read your book at
8:13 night so you size the table lamp
8:14 according to the height of the bed the
8:17 height of the bedside table and the
8:18 position of the person who's going to be reading
8:19 reading [Music]
