0:02 okay so today in our continued study of
0:04 Jesus in the Old Testament where we're
0:06 approaching the issue of Melchizedek
0:09 this is a hotly debated guy the question
0:13 is how is Melchizedek a type of Christ
0:20 and is he actually Jesus because a lot
0:21 of people think he's actually Jesus
0:24 literally showing up a Christ often E in
0:26 the Old Testament and so I'll unpack all
0:28 these ideas but I think personally and I
0:30 could be wrong here is my opinion is
0:32 that Melchizedek gives us kind of like a
0:36 template for one of the ways in which we
0:38 will look for other types of Jesus in
0:39 the Old Testament because it's like
0:41 we're saying hey if this is how God
0:44 shows us about Jesus in the Old
0:45 Testament through Melchizedek then maybe
0:47 he does the same type of thing through
0:48 other people in the Old Testament so
0:50 that's that's kind of where we're gonna
0:52 be going so I'm gonna try to showcase
0:55 those those things for you to to look at
0:57 now Melchizedek it's difficult sometimes
0:59 for the brain to think about Melchizedek
1:01 but it's not difficult to get the
1:04 passages there are only four passages in
1:06 question dealing with Melchizedek the
1:08 the first time he shows up is in Genesis
1:11 14 this is where he shows up and he and
1:13 he meets Abraham so we read up in
1:15 Genesis 14 we read about the story of
1:18 how lot and his people lot and the
1:20 people he's living with they were taken
1:23 captive by some foreign King and Abraham
1:25 goes with and with his army and he
1:29 rescues lot so he saves a lot and brings
1:31 him back and he's coming on his way back
1:32 from this battle with all these multiple
1:34 kings that just fought and we pick up on
1:37 the story in verse 17 of Genesis 14 it
1:39 says after his return from the defeat of
1:42 chedorlaomer and the kings who were with
1:44 him the king of sodom went out to meet
1:47 him at the valley of shaveh that is the
1:51 king's valley and Melchizedek and that's
1:53 the first time he shows up in the Bible
1:55 Melchizedek king of Salem brought out
1:58 bread and wine he was a priest he was
2:02 priest excuse me of God Most High and he
2:05 blessed him and said blessed be Abram by
2:07 God Most High possessor of heaven and
2:09 earth and blessed be God Most High who
2:11 has delivered your enemies into your
2:13 hand and Abram gave him
2:16 tenth of everything and that's all we
2:18 get like that's all we have about
2:20 Melchizedek and you wouldn't think that
2:21 much about him you kind of be like who
2:23 was that guy like what was going but
2:25 there's more we get in Psalms and then
2:26 there's more in the book of Hebrews
2:28 where it directly tells us Melchizedek
2:31 is related to Jesus so let's unpack
2:33 here's what we know about him here's a
2:35 little we just got right we hear his
2:37 name which was Melchizedek all right we
2:39 all got that yeah I think you came in
2:40 here already knowing that information
2:44 but but his name is Melchizedek and he's
2:46 the king of a place called Salem now
2:49 this may well be Jerusalem and I'm
2:51 inclined to think it is Jerusalem there
2:53 are back then as there are today there
2:55 are multiple cities with the same name
2:58 so they're Jerusalem though its old name
3:00 was Salem that was just the name of the
3:01 of the place before it was called
3:04 Jerusalem Psalm 76 - supports this it
3:06 says about God his abode has been
3:09 established in Salem his dwelling place
3:12 in Zion so even years later it was still
3:14 sometimes referred to as Salem not just
3:17 Jerusalem to Zion and Jerusalem are the
3:21 same location basically so some people
3:23 think maybe this thing king of Salem is
3:24 actually a title here's one of the
3:26 debates the hotly debated issues on
3:28 Melchizedek he's the king of Salem but
3:30 that's just a title because we find out
3:32 later Salem means peace as many of you
3:34 already know right Salem means peace so
3:36 maybe he's the king of peace and it was
3:38 a title type thing I have a problem with
3:41 this because if you read Genesis 14 we
3:43 have lots of guys who it says they're
3:45 the king of king of king of and they're
3:48 always locations they're never titles so
3:51 amraphel king of shinar right arioch
3:54 king of ellasar tidal king of bera
3:57 king of sodom etc etc and it's even in
4:01 the same passage right in Genesis 14 17
4:03 Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with
4:06 him the king of Sodom went out to meet
4:09 him in the valley of shaveh so we have
4:10 the king of Sodom then we have
4:13 Melchizedek who is the king of Salem so
4:15 I think it's not a title I think the
4:17 context seems to indicate like an actual
4:20 place he's a king of an actual place you
4:21 know what does he do it
4:23 so he's Melchizedek he's the king of
4:26 Salem he brings out bread and wine and I
4:27 can't save this for
4:30 like how can you miss the implications
4:32 of him bringing out bread and wine like
4:34 how can you possibly miss the obvious
4:36 implications of this I mean Jesus comes
4:38 and he dies for us and then gives us a
4:40 symbolic representation of his sacrifice
4:44 in bread and wine using the Passover but
4:46 now when we read milk is that we
4:48 realized this picture this symbol goes
4:50 back before Passover that it was even
4:51 being used back then so he gives him
4:53 bread and wine that seems pretty obvious
4:56 and pretty neat to me he's also a priest
4:59 he's a priest so he's a king and he's a
5:01 priest and what kind of priest he's not
5:04 Levitical so in the timeline of Israel
5:08 Abraham's like around 2,000 BC right but
5:10 but the Levitical priesthood and the
5:12 Mosaic law and all that sort of
5:14 structure given to Israel didn't happen
5:16 until around 1400 BC at least by my
5:19 reckoning around 1400 so we're saying
5:21 the Levitical priests didn't exist in
5:25 fact we have no idea how this guy was
5:26 doing what he was doing
5:28 we just know he was a priest but it's
5:30 he's not Levitical but was he a pagan
5:33 priest no it says he's a priest of God
5:37 Most High this is often how the pagan
5:39 Kings might have referred to the God of
5:40 Israel because the Israelites were
5:42 claiming that their God was above all
5:43 their God was the one creator of all
5:46 things because they were monotheists so
5:48 when it says he was the priest of God
5:51 Most High that is to say the true God
5:56 so he's a non Jewish priest of the true
5:58 God who brings out bread and wine to
6:00 Abraham and all that stories getting
6:02 real interesting now you know like this
6:03 who is this guy
6:06 well we don't know the details but we
6:08 know priest King Melchizedek king of
6:10 Salem all that and then the last thing
6:12 is well two things really
6:14 Abraham tithes to him took the word
6:16 tithe just means 10% so Abraham gave him
6:19 10% of everything Abraham had he gives
6:22 it to Melchizedek and then Melchizedek
6:27 blesses Abraham so if anyone doubts who
6:29 Melchizedek is that he's priest of the
6:30 Most High God or the God Most High
6:33 listen to the blessing that he gives he
6:35 blesses Abraham in the name of the God
6:37 who is the possessor of heaven and earth
6:40 that's a monotheistic claim
6:43 because because what the Hebrews the in
6:44 Hebrew they don't have a word for
6:46 universe when they want to refer to
6:48 everything in creation they go heaven
6:49 and earth or heavens and earth that's
6:52 what they say so when he says possessor
6:53 of heaven and earth that is really a
6:56 claim that this is the God of all things
6:58 and then he refers in verse 22 the God
7:00 who has delivered your enemies into your
7:02 hands and we know it was God Almighty
7:05 who blessed Abraham in that battle and
7:07 gave him the victory in Genesis 14 22
7:10 Abraham later on it says but Abraham
7:12 said to the king of Sodom I've lifted my
7:15 hand to the Lord God Most High possessor
7:16 of heaven and earth
7:19 so obviously the the textual clues are
7:20 there this may not seem important to you
7:21 guys but if you listen to the debates on
7:24 the visit ech some people will say it
7:26 was a pagan god that no kiss Nick was a
7:28 priest of but that's not what the text
7:31 says and sometimes scholars as much as
7:32 we love and appreciate scholars and
7:34 sometimes we don't love and appreciate
7:36 them very much actually sometimes they
7:39 get so caught up in reading extra
7:41 biblical texts that they forget to check
7:43 the biblical text and I think here the
7:46 real text makes it clear he's the priest
7:49 of God Most High the one and only God so
7:51 really interesting and definitely
7:54 incomplete and you noticed that there's
7:55 like a bunch of puzzles we just laid out
7:57 who is this mochas a dead guy how is he
8:00 a priest of God but not not Levitical
8:01 and not from Abraham why is he bring out
8:02 bread and wine why is every I'm tied to
8:04 him why does he bless Abraham like what
8:07 is going on here I think that the Old
8:09 Testament lays out lots of questions and
8:11 then Jesus comes out and gives us a
8:12 bunch of exclamation points right he
8:14 turns to questions straightens out those
8:16 little question marks into exclamation
8:18 points so that we go whoa
8:20 instead of huh and that happens over and
8:22 over again as I study the Old Testament
8:25 I get these whoa moments that before
8:27 seeing Jesus there were just like huh
8:29 what's going on so the next time he
8:31 shows up is in Psalm 110 so let's look
8:33 at Psalm 110 Genesis 14 is the first
8:36 time Psalm 110 is the second this is
8:39 Psalm 110 is clearly messianic it's a
8:40 fairly short Psalm it's just seven
8:41 verses we're gonna read through the
8:46 whole thing and it is actually quoted
8:48 more than any other Psalm in the New Testament
8:49 Testament
8:52 so Psalm 110 is is the most popular New
8:54 Testament Psalm to quote
8:55 and we actually have Jesus himself
9:01 quoting it when he decides to stump with
9:02 the Pharisees that's a good way to put
9:03 it yeah he said the stump of the
9:04 Pharisees with a question about this
9:08 verse so Psalm 110 verse 1 it says a
9:11 psalm of David the Lord says and that's
9:13 capital lort so les yeux way says to my
9:17 lord sit at my right hand until I make
9:19 your enemies your footstool now this is
9:22 the verse that Jesus quotes David writes
9:24 a psalm and according to Jesus that's
9:26 who is the author of this song so David
9:29 writes the psalm and David says Yahweh
9:32 says to my lord David's Lord whoever
9:34 that is and then Jesus uses this to
9:35 stump the Pharisee so if you would turn
9:37 to Matthew 22 but keep your place in
9:40 Psalm 110 and you might keep Genesis 14
9:43 open and be ready for Hebrews chapter 7
9:49 I'll be going there too huh Matthew 22
9:52 verse 41 so we know how the Pharisees
9:54 used to try to stump Jesus right what
9:55 they did was they would come up and ask
9:57 him a hard question there's a woman she
9:59 had a husband and the husband died and
10:00 she married another guy and he died and
10:01 married another guy and he died and
10:03 married 53 other guys and they all died
10:06 I'm exaggerating and then you know whose
10:07 wife will she be in heaven and Jesus
10:09 would answer like you don't know the
10:10 power of God you don't know the
10:12 scripture is like they don't marry in
10:15 heaven so he would which is which is
10:17 it's it's great how Jesus could answer
10:21 the skeptics questions even the trick
10:23 questions I think that's really
10:25 interesting but they couldn't answer his
10:29 so in Psalm excuse me in Matthew 22 41
10:31 we have where Jesus asks them a question
10:32 now while the Pharisees were gathered
10:34 together Jesus asked them a question
10:37 saying what do you think about the
10:38 Christ that is the Messiah
10:41 remember Messiah or Christ same word two
10:42 different languages right messiahs the
10:45 Hebrew Christ is the Greek and so that's
10:47 the same exact word and he was what do
10:49 you think about the Messiah whose son is
10:52 he and they said to him the son of David
10:53 it was well known that he had to be a
10:55 descendant of David the promises came
10:58 through David but Jesus wants him to
10:59 understand there's more to the Messiah
11:01 than just his lineage from David so
11:04 verse 43 he said to them how is it then
11:08 that David in the spirit calls him Lord
11:11 now think for a second Popeyes think for
11:13 a second about what Jesus is saying
11:16 about the Old Testament how David in the
11:20 spirit calls him Lord he's saying that
11:22 David was inspired by the Holy Spirit
11:23 while he was writing the scriptures
11:25 that's the interesting interesting thing
11:27 so how is it then that David in the
11:29 spirit calls him Lord saying the Lord
11:31 said to my lord sit at my right hand
11:33 until I put your enemies under your feet
11:36 question mark if then David calls him
11:42 Lord how is he his son and no one was
11:45 able to answer him a word nor from that
11:46 day did anyone dare to ask him any more
11:50 questions oh this happens on social
11:51 media right when someone tries to
11:53 challenge you as you're sharing your
11:54 faith and then they try to challenge you
11:56 with trick questions and if you're able
11:58 to have wisdom hopefully and grace but
11:59 but wisdom to get on target in the
12:00 answer and then they just stop asking
12:04 you how it's just after well and I mean
12:05 some people don't some people don't ever
12:06 get the clue and they just continue to
12:10 ask questions forever but they decide
12:12 not to ask Jesus anymore questions after
12:14 this now Jesus that he quotes this in
12:17 mark 12 36 in Luke 20 verse 42 and 3 I
12:20 mean in acts 2 verses 34 and 35 it's
12:23 courted by Peter in Hebrews 1:13 it's
12:25 also quoted this particular Psalm Psalm
12:28 110 verse 1 the Lord said to my lord sit
12:29 at my right hand until I make your
12:30 enemies your footstool that is quoted
12:32 over and over again and it's always
12:34 quoted for the same basic reason to
12:36 establish that the identity of Messiah
12:40 is greater than David or is Lord or is
12:42 better than angels or he it's showing
12:45 how high and lofty Messiah is so yes
12:46 he'd be the son of David but it also be
12:49 his Lord now that's a question mark
12:50 isn't it how is he the son of David and
12:52 his Lord Jesus answers that was a big
12:55 exclamation point because look at my
12:57 identity I'm the son of man and the son
13:00 of God that's how so then in back to
13:02 Psalm 110 back to Psalm 110 so now now
13:04 you see this my point of that little
13:06 detour with this this is a messianic
13:08 Psalm for sure
13:10 not only did the the Jews know it back
13:13 then this was messianic but it's quoted
13:15 throughout the New Testament as being so
13:17 so let's continue reading Psalm 110 now
13:18 we know it's got this like really
13:20 important messianic thrust verse 2 it says
13:21 says
13:24 Lord sins forth from Zion your mighty
13:27 scepter rule in the midst of your
13:29 enemies your people will offer
13:31 themselves freely on the day of your
13:33 power in holy garments from the womb of
13:35 the morning that do of your youthful
13:37 yours the general thrust of verse 2 is
13:39 that this person that David speaking of
13:42 will be king right ruling with a scepter
13:44 that's a king that's a royal kingship
13:46 that he has he's the son of David but
13:48 he's the Lord and he's also got it he's
13:50 a king let's keep reading verse 4 the
13:52 Lord has sworn and will not change his
13:53 mind and here's where milk is a debt
13:56 comes in you are a priest forever after
13:59 the order of Melchizedek so he's this
14:02 he's the son of David he's the Lord he's
14:04 gonna rule his king and yet he is a
14:07 priest and it's after the order of
14:09 Melchizedek not the Levites not the
14:12 ironic priests no Melchizedek verse 5
14:14 the Lord is at your right hand he will
14:15 shatter kings in the day of his wrath he
14:17 will execute judgment among the nation's
14:18 filling them with corpses he will
14:21 shatter Chiefs over the wide earth he
14:23 will drink from the brook by the way
14:26 therefore he will lift up his head so I
14:27 just want to finish reading it so we can
14:29 get it all in our minds but the basic
14:30 idea in Psalm 110 is we have a ruling
14:34 king who is also a priest a king and a
14:36 priest and we have one particular
14:38 example of that in Melchizedek who was a
14:39 king and a priest
14:44 interesting interesting one of the ways
14:46 they knew this was about Messiah is that
14:48 it was never fulfilled in David this is
14:52 pretty simple it highlights the the
14:53 usefulness of different prophecies and I
14:54 keep I keep pointing this out there's a
14:56 concept I want us to get because it's
15:00 really helpful all prophesy or
15:03 foreshadowings are not always evidence
15:06 for the Bible sometimes it's just
15:08 theology like you're just learning
15:10 theology some prophecies they prove God
15:13 spoke right so I read about like the
15:15 destruction of Tyre in Ezekiel I read
15:17 about Psalm 22 and how the Messiah will
15:19 will suffer describing crucifixion
15:22 before it was invented you know I
15:24 Jesus quoting it on the crowd like some
15:25 things are really like that's evidence
15:27 for God's inspiration of the Scriptures
15:29 but not all prophecies like this which
15:31 is why sometimes if you're studying
15:32 prophecy you're like how is this going
15:33 to help me prove to this skeptic that
15:35 the Bible is God's Word
15:37 and my answer is it's not like not every
15:40 prophecy is for that one purpose some is
15:41 and use those prophecies for that some
15:43 prophecies just give clarity on theology
15:46 and that's what Psalm 110 verse 1 was
15:48 about just clarifying who this Messiah
15:50 is so you get better theology that was
15:51 what that was about
15:54 and some are just there to encourage
15:56 exhort or strengthen people they're not
15:58 proving anything is just about
15:59 encouraging your heart God speaking
16:02 prophetically in these in these ways so
16:03 it's not like the only purpose of the
16:05 Bible is to prove that the Bible's from
16:07 God God actually has things to say once
16:08 you realize it's from him and so he has
16:10 other things to add the reason why I
16:12 labor on this is because sometimes and
16:13 maybe even now you know watching online
16:15 there's a skeptic who would look at
16:17 these things and go that doesn't prove
16:18 Jesus's but that doesn't prove he's no
16:20 but that doesn't prove but that's not
16:22 the point right that's the evidence for
16:24 the Bible series I did a whole twenty
16:26 part series on that that's that's the
16:28 point of that series this is theology
16:31 we're getting digging into so let's now
16:33 now we've got the two bolt system
16:36 process Genesis 14 and Psalm 110 and now
16:37 we're gonna go right to the new
16:38 testament to how it interprets these
16:41 things so turn to Hebrews chapter 5 it
16:43 comes up briefly in Hebrews 5 we're
16:49 gonna read a chunk of this and then the
16:51 next passage will be in Hebrews 7 so he
16:55 was 5 and Hebrews 7 so in Hebrews 5 it
16:57 just it just kind of I wasn't gonna read
16:59 Hebrews 5 but I decided we should just
17:01 go ahead and just read the whole thing
17:04 just to absorb it because it helps set
17:06 the stage for what he's talking about in
17:10 Hebrews 7 about Melchizedek so we
17:11 already know Melchizedek is a priest
17:13 he's a king and then the Messiah will be
17:16 a priest after the order of Melchizedek
17:18 whatever that means
17:20 let's find out Hebrews 5 1 for every
17:23 high priest chosen from among men is
17:25 appointed to act on behalf of men in
17:27 relation to God to offer gifts and
17:30 sacrifices for sins he can tell gently
17:31 with the ignorant and wayward since he
17:34 himself is beset with weakness because
17:36 of this he's obligated to offer
17:38 sacrifice for his own sins just as he
17:41 does for those of the people and no one
17:43 takes this honor for himself but only
17:45 when he's only when called by God just
17:48 as Aaron was so far this is all about
17:50 the Aaronic priesthood right the Levites
17:53 this is their priesthood but there's
17:55 principles to learn so also verse five
17:57 Christ did not exalt himself to be made
18:00 a high priest but was appointed by him
18:02 who said to him you are my son did they
18:04 have begotten you as he also says in
18:05 another place you are a priest forever
18:08 after the order of Melchizedek where's
18:11 that from Psalm 110 right so according
18:14 it again verse 7 in the days of his
18:17 flesh Jesus offered up prayers and
18:19 supplications with loud cries and tears
18:20 to him who was able to save him from
18:22 death and he was heard because of his
18:25 reverence although he was a son he
18:27 learned obedience through what he
18:30 suffered and being made perfect he
18:31 became the source of eternal salvation
18:34 to all who obey Him being designated by
18:37 God a high priest after the order of
18:40 melchizedek about this we have much to
18:42 say and it is hard to explain since you
18:47 have become dull of hearing yes the New
18:50 Testament is not always nice it's always
18:53 not always kind to you in a sense you've
18:54 become dull of hearing and the next
18:56 whole chapter chapter 6 he talks about
18:58 how dull they are and how he's like what
19:00 there's really no point in me starting
19:01 over with salvation with you guys look
19:03 like you either receive it or don't now
19:05 I'm moving on to talk about Melchizedek
19:07 this is next-level Christianity stuff
19:09 but if I have to rebuild the first floor
19:11 with you there's no point I mean it's a
19:13 really scary passage Hebrews 6 which I'm
19:19 thankfully not teaching tonight yes save
19:19 that for later
19:21 there's we all have questions about
19:27 Hebrews 6 so there's a lot here but just
19:29 to mention here's a little bit of what
19:30 we get so far in Hebrews 5 about
19:32 Melchizedek right priests help people in
19:34 their relationship with God especially
19:36 dealing with sin okay Jesus fulfills
19:38 that they are sympathy because they have
19:40 weaknesses too in fact their weakness is
19:42 often stem from their own sinful natures
19:44 Jesus is separated from them a little
19:46 bit there he had weak physical weakness
19:49 but no sin and so he he understands the
19:50 frailty of humankind but but wasn't
19:52 sinful so there's a difference there and
19:55 Jesus is a high priest but he's unlike
19:57 the ironic priests he's a Melchizedek
20:00 Ian priest he's a priest after the order
20:01 of Melchizedek
20:05 and he saves quote all who obey Him so I
20:07 just gotta mention really quick because
20:10 in the Mormon Church they believe they
20:12 have an active priesthood called the
20:16 Melchizedek II and priesthood and the
20:17 young men in the Mormon Church will be
20:20 ordained as priests after the order of
20:24 Melchizedek that's a total twisting of
20:26 the scripture there's only one person
20:28 who is a priest after the order of
20:29 Melchizedek his name is Jesus
20:31 but what because this is a confusing
20:34 passage because it's a hard passage this
20:36 is what often time cult groups do is
20:39 they take hard passages build really
20:42 detailed theology systems based off of a
20:44 confusing passage and then they make you
20:46 try to accept it because they quote a
20:47 verse you don't understand and it's
20:50 really kind of a weird tactic they have
20:52 never let someone cause you to embrace
20:54 all this theology because you don't
20:57 understand a verse like just just go I
20:58 don't understand that but I don't think
21:00 it says all that like that's fair enough
21:03 to say and it will protect you so yeah
21:04 there's just one guy who's a priest
21:06 after Melchizedek and his name is Jesus
21:09 so Hebrews six verse 20 the last verse
21:10 in Hebrews 6 we come to our final
21:12 passage about my own kiss attack and
21:13 then I'm gonna try to answer a bunch of
21:15 questions we've laid out a bunch of
21:17 those things so far and we'll try to get
21:20 to the answers verse 20 of Hebrews 6 it
21:21 says where Jesus has gone as a
21:23 forerunner on our behalf
21:24 speaking of like that Tabernacle in
21:27 heaven he washed us clean having become
21:30 a high priest forever after the order of
21:33 Melchizedek and now here's the inspired
21:35 commentary you don't need me to tell you
21:36 what Melchizedek is about because God
21:40 tells us right here in Hebrews 7 for
21:42 this Melchizedek king of Salem priest of
21:45 the Most High God met Abraham returning
21:46 from the slaughter of the Kings and
21:48 blessed him remember how he blessed him
21:52 and to Abraham important to him Abraham
21:54 apportioned a tenth part of everything
21:57 he ties he is first by translation of
21:59 his name king of righteousness and then
22:02 he is also king of Salem that is king of
22:04 peace so far this is really easy
22:06 no because they okay this I got this
22:08 this is easy peasy stuff right points of
22:11 comparison the name Melchizedek means
22:13 king of righteousness malik means king
22:15 Tzedek means
22:17 he's righteous king that's who he is
22:21 that's what his name means so we have by
22:23 the way there's a debate on this as well
22:24 did it really mean king of righteousness
22:27 or did it mean my king is righteous or
22:30 did it mean that his name meant Malik
22:36 King is is said ech which is the name of
22:38 this pagan deity is my King Zedeck is my king
22:39 king
22:43 okay pause the inspired commentary he
22:46 says Melchizedek which means king of
22:47 righteousness so it helps us and
22:48 translates this for us there's a big
22:50 debate on this I'm not going to get into
22:52 it but they've even found a text in
22:55 Egypt that showed Melchizedek as simply
22:56 a name that meant king of righteousness
22:59 so we we have like ancient verification
23:01 for this I share that because I never
23:02 know who might watch these this
23:04 commentary these videos and maybe they
23:06 needed to hear that yes they actually
23:10 found evidence to support that so easy
23:11 peasy right Jesus is the king of
23:13 righteousness he is the righteous King
23:16 right first John 2:1 it says my little
23:17 children I'm writing these things to you
23:19 so that you may not sin but if anyone
23:21 does sin we have an advocate with the
23:24 father Jesus Christ the righteous
23:27 he is righteous the only one who's
23:29 righteous he is the remember when Jesus
23:31 says why do you call me good no one is
23:33 good but God and then first John 2:1
23:35 goes yeah Jesus the righteous like yes
23:38 that's him he is the righteous one but
23:40 he's also the king of peace see a
23:42 righteous King implies he's gonna bring
23:43 down a righteous judgment on sinners but
23:45 he's the king of peace bringing and
23:46 restoring our relationship with a God
23:50 king of Salem shown Romans 5:1 it says
23:52 therefore since we've been justified by
23:56 faith we have peace with God through our
23:58 Lord Jesus Christ he is ultimately the
24:00 Prince of Peace he's our king of peace
24:02 so there's a contrast here
24:06 I love the the intensity of the cross
24:07 when you really think about it
24:10 conceptually about how the wrath of God
24:12 and the love of God come together on the
24:14 cross about how the righteousness of God
24:18 and the peace of God come to come
24:20 together on the cross Psalm 85 10 is one
24:22 of my favorite verses that capsule
24:24 eights that it says steadfast love and
24:26 faithfulness meet righteousness and peace
24:27 peace
24:30 kiss each other and I just picture the
24:32 cross like righteousness which would
24:34 require judgment and peace kiss each
24:35 other they meet and through the cross
24:37 were reconciled she's our king of
24:40 righteousness and he's our king of peace
24:44 this to me is more confirmation that God
24:48 from the moment when Melchizedek is
24:49 doing this stuff with Abraham God is
24:51 planning out how this will come out in
24:53 the text of Scripture so that you could
24:55 study it later and see Jesus that this
24:59 was all an agenda on God's mind and this
25:01 means something else
25:04 names can have typological significance
25:07 I mean if Melchizedek named and though
25:09 he's king of Salem he's just the king
25:10 but it means king of peace and I can go
25:12 oh that relates to Jesus then this means
25:15 that in my little toolbox I can go I can
25:17 look up the meaning of a name and see if
25:19 that maybe has some significance as a
25:20 type of Christ as I'm studying the Old
25:23 Testament which is just kind of fun so
25:24 now you can do this now I have no agenda
25:26 here I don't know what names I'm gonna
25:29 apply this to exactly except to say I
25:30 think that God tends to do things
25:32 consistently and if he does it with
25:34 Melchizedek he may do it with somebody
25:36 else and somewhere else in the scripture
25:38 and I think I can't think of places
25:39 where I think he does this and we'll get
25:41 into that stuff in future weeks so does
25:43 this mean every name is a type of Christ
25:47 Adam and Eve no no not necessarily
25:50 but it means that it could be there and
25:52 that's that's fun for me I can look at
25:55 these New Testament examples of types to
25:58 give me a tool a tool set to go to the
26:01 Old Testament on my own I remember we
26:03 had a class called hermeneutics when I
26:05 was in the school ministry and in this
26:07 book hermeneutics it was fantastic book
26:08 they talked about principles for Bible
26:10 study but when he came to types they had
26:12 a few principles and the last they had
26:14 like five principles on identifying
26:16 types of Jesus in the Old Testament the
26:17 last principle I think was the fifth one
26:21 I totally disagree with and the last
26:23 principle was it's only a type if it's
26:25 clearly identified in the New Testament
26:29 as a type of Christ and I was like well
26:30 why do you even need the other four
26:32 principles if that's one of your
26:33 principle I don't even need to think
26:35 about types I just make a list of the
26:37 New Testament examples and that's all we
26:39 get but yet
26:42 that's not all we get that's really not
26:44 all we get there's no reason why I mean
26:45 Jesus on the road to emmaus we did this
26:47 in the first week on this Jesus in the
26:49 Old Testament thing the road to miss
26:51 Jesus opened and beginning at Moses and
26:53 to all the prophets right all the
26:54 Scriptures he shows them the things that
26:57 pertain to him there's more there's more
26:59 and I think it's one of the noblest
27:02 things you can do to soberly look for
27:04 types of Jesus throughout the Old
27:07 Testament so verse 3 let's continue
27:10 verse 3 in Hebrews 7 he's without father
27:12 or mother or genealogy having neither
27:14 beginning of days nor end of life but
27:16 resembling the Son of God he continues a
27:18 priest forever here's the debate now
27:20 that's that's the verse right there that
27:22 one verse gives us most of the debate
27:24 we're gonna look at so he doesn't have
27:27 father and mother so I mean he's eternal
27:29 he's unborn he's undying no father no
27:31 mother no genealogy he doesn't have a
27:32 beginning of days and he doesn't have an
27:35 end of life he resembles the son of God
27:37 and he continues as a priest forever now
27:40 depending on how you take this you may
27:42 think that Melchizedek isn't a type of
27:45 Christ he's actually Jesus he just
27:47 continues as a priest forever and he's
27:50 okay who's who's uncreated Jesus right
27:51 like that would that would fit that
27:54 would fit so on the pro side for people
27:55 who think that Jesus this is a Christ
27:57 often an actual appearance of Christ
27:59 um he's eternal unborn undying that
28:03 would imply it Hebrews 7 8 might imply a
28:05 Christ a phony as well because verse 8
28:07 it says in the one case tides are
28:09 received by mortal men speaking of the
28:11 Levites but in the other case by one of
28:15 whom it is testified that he lives well
28:17 he lives like just Melchizedek still
28:20 live today then is that the point but I
28:22 have some things that make me think it's
28:23 not a Christ often II so let me share
28:25 that with you because that's my personal
28:27 opinion we can feel we can disagree on
28:29 this issue I certainly disagree with
28:31 plenty of people on it but here's the
28:34 reasons the Old Testament if you took it
28:35 by itself you would never have thought
28:40 Melchizedek was eternal right like if
28:41 you just read the Old Testament in
28:43 isolation as a new you never would have
28:44 thought he was eternal it just wouldn't
28:45 you just he's a guy he's the king of
28:48 Salem he's a priest of the Most High God
28:50 like but but eternal unborn undying like
28:53 those things no I don't think so
28:57 um in verse 3 it says resembling the Son
28:58 of God
29:01 it doesn't say as the son of God if it
29:03 was a Christ often II I wouldn't think
29:05 he would be said to be resembling the
29:07 Son of God I would think he would just
29:10 be said to be the son of God right if it
29:11 was Jesus I would have thought having me
29:12 the beginning of days nor end of life
29:16 but as the son of God he continues you
29:17 know as a priest forever but instead
29:19 he's resembling the son of God in verse
29:21 20 of chapter 6
29:22 Hebrews 6:20 and quoting the Old
29:25 Testament well it says you are a priest
29:29 forever after the order of Melchizedek
29:31 it doesn't say you are Melchizedek a
29:34 priest forever that would be the
29:35 implication if Melchizedek and Jesus are
29:36 the same person
29:38 but instead of Jesus is similar to
29:41 Melchizedek we have that so that would
29:44 uh that would also cause some problems
29:46 because Melchizedek was king of Salem so
29:47 we're not talking okay every Christ
29:49 often II I've read so far Jesus shows up
29:52 and then leaves but if Melchizedek is a
29:54 Christ often II he was literally ruling
29:58 and reigning in Salem long term and
29:59 functioning as a priest there for those
30:03 people and that to me seems a little bit
30:05 unlikely I'm not saying it couldn't
30:07 possibly happen but it would almost
30:08 imply that Jesus came and lived an
30:11 actual full life before he came with the
30:13 Incarnation and that's confusing to me
30:16 so you see why at first glance you go
30:17 that's a cry that's Christ off on you
30:18 but when you start to look at the other
30:20 puzzle pieces you go that's kind of
30:22 creating some problems for us if we have
30:25 that perspective I think in verse 4 it
30:28 says see how great this man was speaking
30:31 of Melchizedek um I just want to know it
30:32 doesn't say see how great he is
30:35 it's just weird to refer to him in the
30:37 past tense in that sense and in verse 21
30:40 of chapter 7 it says he was made a
30:43 priest by an oath and we'll get to there
30:44 we'll get there in a minute
30:47 he was made a priest by an oath and that
30:49 took place either like a milk in okay
30:52 Psalm 110 occurs hundreds and hundreds
30:54 of years after Abraham and it says you
30:57 are a priest forever well Hebrews sevens
30:59 commentary on Psalm 110 says he became a
31:02 priest by an oath meaning the person
31:04 Psalm 110 is talking about was not
31:06 already a priest
31:08 was already a priest so if he became a
31:09 priest by now that either happened at
31:11 the time of David when the oath was
31:14 given or it was you are and it was
31:16 declaration about Jesus and when he came
31:18 he became the priest melk it you know
31:19 priest in the order of Melchizedek
31:21 there's another reason to think it's not
31:24 a christophany um so Jesus was a priest
31:26 made a priest long after Melchizedek had
31:28 already been a priest so then those are
31:30 two different people and in verse 15 of
31:33 Hebrews 7 it says quote another priest
31:36 arises in the likeness of Melchizedek
31:39 okay so it's not the same guy that's the
31:43 context I see there some people say no
31:44 no no Mike you're wrong it's not a
31:46 christophany it's not a human who
31:48 represents Jesus it's an angel who
31:50 represents Jesus so Mike is the next
31:51 different than Jesus but it's an angelic
31:53 being that's why it can be said to be
31:56 without father or mother except it also
31:57 says he's without beginning of days or
32:00 end of life and angels do have a
32:01 beginning of days so I feel like that
32:03 doesn't really apply to angels if we
32:06 take that literally so how do I explain
32:09 the the statements without beginning
32:11 adays how do I explain that if it's not
32:12 if that's a human how's it human without
32:14 beginning of days here's what I think
32:16 and I hope I can express this well see I
32:18 think I get it right but getting it out
32:19 of my mouth to someone else that's the
32:20 challenge that's the real challenge of
32:24 teaching so um I think that Melchizedek
32:26 had a beginning of days and an end of
32:28 life in a genealogy I think the point is
32:30 it's not written in the text
32:33 I think Hebrews is saying God included
32:36 the story written this way so it would
32:39 be a picture of Christ which to me is
32:40 kind of exciting when you think about
32:43 the implications so there was a there
32:45 was more to the story of Melchizedek but
32:47 the the particular details written and
32:50 the ones left out were written in and
32:52 left out so it would be a better picture
32:56 of Jesus does that make sense I hope I
32:58 hope this makes sense it means that as
33:00 I'm looking at the Old Testament I not
33:03 only look at the people and events but I
33:05 look at how it was written
33:08 why was this detail just that there was
33:09 there was more to that guy's life but it
33:11 was left out because God wanted to draw
33:12 a better picture of Christ through the
33:15 Old Testament Melchizedek had a
33:18 genealogy in my opinion I could be wrong but
33:19 but
33:21 my opinion yet our genealogy but how is
33:24 he without genealogy in the story in
33:27 Genesis 14 there's no genealogy in
33:29 Genesis 14 he doesn't start his life he
33:31 doesn't end his life he just shows up
33:33 does his thing and he's gone and we
33:35 don't know any more details about him I
33:37 think in that sense he's a picture of
33:41 Jesus Christ in the text and that's the
33:43 point it means that the text was more
33:46 the goal than the actual guy himself
33:49 this means that the Bible is more
33:51 profound and more important than maybe
33:53 we've realized and so to me that that
33:56 here's here's how I view it call me
33:58 because it it could cry Stephanie you
33:59 have to answer those other questions
34:00 that I have real hard time answering I
34:03 don't know how to answer those issues if
34:06 you call Melchizedek a picture of Christ
34:08 I feel as though I can answer the
34:10 genealogy issue the without beginning of
34:12 days an end of life I feel like I can
34:14 answer all those issues and the other
34:16 issues and it all makes sense so that's
34:20 my personal view yeah there's other guys
34:22 too or you read about them Jephthah
34:23 we'll get there I don't know why but
34:24 Jeff's that's one of my favorite
34:28 pictures of Christ interesting but but
34:30 you read his story and you realize in
34:31 these few verses in the beginning of a
34:34 story it's so a picture of Christ in my
34:36 opinion and if they had added more
34:37 details more and more details about his
34:38 life it would have broke the picture
34:42 down that's the point you see Joseph the
34:44 story of Joseph we read we have a lot of
34:46 him right but we if we read more and
34:48 more and more about him it would
34:49 eventually start to just look less and
34:51 less like Jesus but we have less
34:53 information in order to keep it looking
34:55 more like Jesus that's the idea so
34:58 that's my perspective my view on that
34:59 for what it's worth and you may disagree
35:03 but you're wrong alright so hebrews
35:05 hebrews so we'll continue Hebrews 7
35:08 verse 4 it says see how great this man
35:10 was to whom Abraham the patriarch gave a
35:12 tenth of the Spoils and now he's talking
35:14 about the greatness of Melchizedek
35:15 because it's relates to the greatness of
35:17 Jesus Melchizedek is a picture of Jesus
35:19 and those descendants of Levi who
35:20 receive this is now this is a
35:23 challenging part but stick with me here
35:25 the descendants of Levi who received the
35:26 priestly office have a commandment in
35:29 the law to take tithes from the people
35:31 that is from their brothers is realized
35:33 tithe to the Levites
35:36 tithe too though these are also are
35:39 descended from Abraham but this man who
35:41 does not have his descent from them
35:43 receives ties from Abraham and blessed
35:45 him who had the promises those are the
35:47 two points he's gonna highlight spoiler
35:49 right here they tithe
35:51 Abraham tithe and Melchizedek blessed
35:53 him and he's gonna say these two things
35:55 make Melchizedek better than Abraham
35:58 because you tie this someone better than
36:01 you spiritually in some sense at least
36:04 in this context and then the one who
36:06 blesses is greater than the one who gets
36:09 the blessing so he's gonna he's trying
36:11 to show how great Melchizedek is to show
36:14 how great Jesus is so verse 7 it's
36:16 beyond dispute that the inferior is
36:19 blessed by the superior Abraham then
36:23 would be inferior to Melchizedek in the
36:25 one case tie this back to the tithe
36:27 issue are received by mortal men but in
36:28 the other case by one of whom it has
36:31 testified that he lives one might even
36:33 say that Levi himself who receives tithes
36:34 tithes
36:36 paid tithes through Abraham for he was
36:38 still in the loins of his ancestor when
36:49 verse 9 one might even say that you
36:50 could actually translate that phrase
36:53 like in a sense so Paul's again he's
36:55 drawing analogies to Jesus he's not
36:58 saying that Levi was literally in the
37:01 loins of Abraham he's going to know in
37:02 the story
37:05 Levi's from Abraham so in a sense Levi's
37:07 tithing - so what's the point milk is it
37:09 x better than Levi and the milk is a
37:11 dekyon priesthood that Jesus has is
37:13 better than the Levitical priesthood
37:15 which now you zoom out and go that's
37:17 what Hebrews is about right Jesus is
37:19 better Jesus is the fulfillment and the
37:20 better fulfillment of all those Old
37:22 Testament realities and what blows me
37:26 away is this means that the priesthood
37:29 that was to supersede the Levites came
37:31 long before the Levites and Abraham
37:34 himself tithed to that guy that's pretty
37:36 significant isn't it now if I was Jewish
37:38 I'd be like good because I want to know
37:40 there's a solid grounding in the Old
37:42 Testament for who Jesus is and what he
37:45 does so he's greater than Abraham for
37:46 two reasons right Abraham ties two
37:48 cos avec and two he blessed Abraham and
37:50 the inferiors blessed by the superior
37:52 you have examples of this in the
37:53 scripture and other places you know the
37:55 father is going to bless the sons before
38:00 he passes away that sort of thing to
38:02 highlight this to draw our attention
38:04 this verse six of Hebrews 7 it says he
38:06 blessed him who had the promises
38:08 remembering how great Abraham was in you
38:10 all the nations of the world will be
38:12 blessed and he comes and he blesses
38:15 Abraham Abraham that's a kind of a big
38:20 deal so how does this relate then to the
38:22 melt to the to the Levites in the
38:24 Melchizedek ian's thing going on here is
38:27 again a part of Hebrews saying that even
38:29 the system of the law
38:32 that was coming through the Levites that
38:36 it was it was its forerunner or not for
38:38 honor but it was preceded by this guy
38:40 Melchizedek who interceded for Abraham
38:43 to draw him to God by being the priest
38:46 between Abraham and God and then yet
38:48 he's a picture of Christ and then Psalm
38:50 110 prophetically speaks about this
38:53 future priest king who will come in the
38:54 order of Melchizedek cites I think it's
38:56 just absolutely amazing
38:58 it shows us the purpose of the whole
39:00 like literally Melchizedek speaks to
39:02 something about the purpose of the
39:04 Levitical law in general it's a pretty
39:06 profound thing but we got to move on so
39:09 verse 11 now if perfection have been
39:10 attainable through the Levitical
39:12 priesthood for under it that people
39:14 receive the law what further need would
39:16 there have been for another priest to
39:17 arise after the order of Melchizedek
39:19 rather than one named after the order of
39:21 Aaron just highlighting what why bother
39:22 having a priest after the order of
39:24 Melchizedek if if the ironic priesthood
39:27 is enough if the Levites are enough for
39:28 when there was a change in the
39:31 priesthood there is necessarily a change
39:34 in the law as well for the one of whom
39:35 these things are spoken belongs to
39:38 another tribe from which no one has ever
39:41 served at the altar so Jesus this is
39:42 speaking of Jesus he comes from a
39:44 different tribe that's not the Levites
39:46 he comes from the tribe of Judah the
39:48 kingly tribe so how could he be a priest
39:51 you're not part of the Levites because
39:52 you're a priest after the order of
39:54 Melchizedek do you see how the the
39:55 question marks are answered with the
39:58 exclamation point of Jesus price really
40:00 neat stuff I wish I could like
40:02 pause and just teach for 15 minutes on
40:04 that one concept alright verse 14 for it
40:06 is evident that our Lord was descended
40:08 from Judah and in connection with what
40:10 with that tribe Moses said nothing about
40:12 priests this becomes even more evident
40:13 when another priest arises in the
40:15 likeness of Melchizedek who has become a
40:18 priest become a priest as an he wasn't
40:20 already a priest not on the basis of a
40:22 legal requirement concerning bodily
40:23 descent but by the power of an
40:25 indestructible life for it is witnessed
40:28 of him you were a priest forever after
40:31 the order of Melchizedek highlighting
40:33 the foreverness of that priesthood every
40:35 one of the high priests would die it was
40:37 kind of planned out right in fact the
40:38 whole City of Refuge thing happens when
40:39 the high priest dies not like this is
40:42 kind of expected but Jesus when he comes
40:44 as a priest he's a priest how long
40:46 forever so there was an eternal
40:48 priesthood promised and the Levitical
40:51 thing was a temporary thing to be a
40:53 schoolmaster lead us to Christ is the
40:58 idea so this solves a problem with Jesus
41:00 Jesus he can be the king of Israel
41:01 because he's of the tribe of Judah so
41:03 he's in the proper line of descent but
41:04 how could he be a priest how could he
41:06 intercede on our behalf how can he ever
41:08 live to intercede for me because he's a
41:09 priest after the order of Melchizedek
41:12 and this is an Old Testament promise an
41:14 Old Testament truth and it's only
41:16 answered in Jesus and it predates the
41:19 Levitical priesthood and one of the
41:21 messages that we get as we're doing
41:22 Jesus in the Old Testament is this is
41:24 not about us reading Jesus into the Old
41:26 Testament it really is kind of like
41:29 saying guys the Old Testament doesn't
41:33 make sense without Jesus it just doesn't
41:36 make sense without him you have lots of
41:37 passages where I don't even know what
41:39 you're supposed to do with Melchizedek
41:42 or the promise in some 110 without Jesus
41:46 how do you answer this without him you
41:49 don't alright verse 18 we're continuing
41:52 Hebrew sevens a long chapter four on the
41:54 one hand a former commandment is set
41:56 aside because of its weakness and
41:57 uselessness for the law made nothing
41:59 perfect it was good the law was good it
42:00 just couldn't fix you it just pointed
42:02 out your error but on the other hand a
42:05 better hope is introduced through which
42:07 we draw near to God and it was not
42:09 without an oath for those who formerly
42:11 became priests were made such with an
42:13 oath the Levites the air the ironic
42:15 as well which is like a subdivision
42:18 within the Levites verse 21 but this one
42:19 was made a priest with an oath by the
42:22 one who said to him the Lord is sworn
42:24 and will not change his mind you are a
42:28 priest forever now I'm so pause for a
42:31 second please don't underestimate the
42:33 incredible importance of seeing Jesus
42:36 throughout the Old Testament you can't
42:40 do this with Mohammed and I like when
42:43 people try you can't do this with Joseph
42:45 Smith remember what happened with Joseph
42:46 Smith looked to find prophecies about
42:48 himself in the Old Testament he added
42:50 extra verses at the end of Genesis in
42:52 order to make something there because it
42:55 doesn't exist the the the passages
42:56 because I Mike
42:57 people can find anything they want in
43:00 the Old Testament I'm like go ahead you
43:02 find your proof text for whatever guy
43:03 you want on song-song or some other
43:07 weird thing going on and I'll get my
43:08 proof text for Jesus and let's compare
43:10 the quality of those texts how's that sound
43:11 sound
43:13 you can't do this with anyone else in
43:15 fact if Jesus isn't the Messiah then the
43:17 truth is the Old Testament is just
43:20 failed if he's not the Messiah the
43:22 Messiah didn't come at all and it's over
43:25 and the hope of mankind is is just gone
43:29 but he is so verse 22 this makes Jesus
43:33 the guarantor of a better covenant the
43:34 one who guarantees it
43:36 the former priests were many in number
43:38 because they were prevented by death
43:39 from continuing in office which is
43:41 something that prevents a lot of us from
43:43 continuing but he holds his priesthood
43:45 permanently because he continues forever
43:48 consequently he's able to save to the
43:50 uttermost those who draw near to God
43:52 through him since he always lives to
43:54 make intercession for them now sometimes
43:55 we read this person we think Jesus is
43:57 praying for me he's interceding for me
43:59 it's a different kind of thing it's not
44:00 that he's praying for you
44:03 it's kind of better than that it's that
44:05 his constant life his living life after
44:08 sacrificing for you is constantly making
44:11 you close to God it's like the blood of
44:14 the intercession of blood how can you
44:17 draw near to God I'm living to intercede
44:19 am i enough to bring you to God yes and
44:21 Here I am always here always alive
44:22 always interceding for you that's a
44:24 powerful verse to remember for those who
44:26 struggle with feeling condemned
44:27 feeling beat up with feeling like you're
44:30 how could I be forgiven I'm like in
44:32 Jesus how could you not be forgiven
44:34 really how on earth can you not be
44:36 forgiven in Christ I don't see how it's
44:39 possible verse 26 for it was indeed
44:41 fitting that we should have such a high
44:44 priest wholly innocent unstained
44:46 separated from sinners and exalted above
44:48 the heavens he has no need like those
44:51 high priests to offer sacrifices daily
44:52 first for his own sins and then for
44:54 those of the people since he did this
44:57 once and for all when he offered up
44:59 himself for the law appoints men in
45:01 their weaknesses or their weakness as
45:03 high priests but the word of the oath
45:07 which came later than the law appoints a
45:09 son who's been made perfect forever and
45:10 this is where we could easily miss I
45:12 think some of the points we should catch
45:15 the word of the oath is that verse in
45:17 Psalm 110 for right you're a priest
45:18 forever according to the order of
45:20 Melchizedek that's the oath I have sworn
45:22 and will not relent you're a priest that
45:26 oath came after the law meaning after
45:28 the Levitical laws already in place God
45:29 promises some future priests
45:32 why bother promising a future priest if
45:35 the priests we have are enough do you
45:38 see the insufficiency of the law is
45:40 written into it so that we would know it
45:43 was temporary and that's the point there
45:45 really means stuff man one of these days
45:47 I'd love to actually do a full on
45:48 teaching through the book of Hebrews
45:50 like taking our time going through it on
45:51 like Sunday nights or something like
45:53 that and and maybe by then I'll figure
45:56 out what to do with Hebrews six I hope
45:58 I'll just get a guest teacher for that
46:03 day I did last time so so the
46:05 Melchizedek priesthoods better because
46:07 it's eternal it's got better sacrifice
46:09 it's got a better effect it's one time
46:10 with a constant effect that lasts
46:11 forever instead of a bunch of guys
46:13 rising up and dying and insufficient for
46:15 actually perfecting you and all that
46:16 sort of thing
46:20 so in conclusion after I feel like I've
46:21 just been going a mile a minute like
46:23 remember those micro machine commercials
46:25 that micro machine guy that would talk
46:26 like super fast I feel like that's I've
46:29 been doing it so I just knew how much I
46:34 had to get through so our tools we got
46:36 two things right one we have Melchizedek
46:37 and all the incredible richness of
46:39 theology the clarity on the-- Allah
46:42 who Jesus is and what he did for us when
46:44 we see Melchizedek in Genesis 14 Psalm
46:46 110 and the explanation in Hebrews six
46:49 and five and seven on the other side we
46:52 get tools so that we can get better and
46:54 better at finding Jesus in the Old
46:55 Testament in the passages the New
46:57 Testament doesn't specifically identify
46:58 and that's what we're doing
47:00 so here's what we're adding to our tool
47:02 set in particular one thing that's
47:05 really neat is names alone can be
47:07 significant in finding types of Christ
47:09 in the Old Testament I don't know how
47:10 you can argue with that point after
47:13 finding out about Melchizedek his title
47:15 even he's king of Salem like the town
47:17 he's the king of ends up with having
47:20 meaning as far as how it pictures Christ
47:22 I think that's neat we also see
47:25 something else it's not just Melchizedek
47:28 king of Salem look at how many points
47:31 where Melchizedek connects to Jesus he
47:32 shows up he just he doesn't have a
47:35 genealogy whether that's literal or if
47:37 it's because the story has no genealogy
47:38 so it's a picture of Christ whichever
47:40 side you take on that so there's one
47:45 point no genealogy no mom or dad right
47:47 no beginning event or end of days he's a
47:49 priest and he's a king his name means
47:51 king of righteousness he's the king of
47:55 peace Abraham tithes to him he brings
48:00 Abraham bread and wine and there's a
48:03 promise that this priesthood will so
48:04 like there's something hanging in the
48:06 text that that leaves you with a
48:07 question going how will this be
48:09 fulfilled this Melchizedek Ian promised
48:12 is priest forever so there's like 10
48:15 points of correspondence to Jesus in
48:17 this story so the two tools I want to
48:21 focus on is names matter not that they
48:23 always matter but they matter and to
48:25 multiple points of Correspondence if you
48:27 want to say this is a type of Christ
48:28 it's probably going to need to
48:30 correspond to Jesus in more than one way
48:33 because God is able to do that so yeah
48:34 so that's what I have for you guys today
48:37 and I don't even know what we're gonna
48:38 do next time because I haven't had time
48:41 to think about that because I'm gonna be
48:42 coming to Florida and they won't be
48:44 doing this again for two weeks or three
48:46 weeks well if the Jesus in the Old
48:48 Testament what we'll do the Q&A thing
48:51 coming up soon so let's pray
48:55 father God we're excited yeah we dipped
48:58 our toes maybe even our whole legs into
48:59 this topic of hook is a deck there's
49:01 obviously more much more there in the
49:03 theology of it and all that but it's
49:07 exciting God to think that in Genesis
49:11 with Abraham you have this priest show
49:14 up who's a picture of Christ that ends
49:16 up superseding the Levitical priesthood
49:18 yet it's all Old Testament that's so
49:22 exciting to us lord help us to see how
49:25 you have have embedded in the Old
49:27 Testament more and more about Jesus and
49:28 about who he is and what he would do
49:30 help unveil our eyes so that in our
49:32 reading of the Scriptures the Old
49:33 Testament we see what you always
49:36 intended for us to find in Jesus name Amen
49:37 Amen [Music]
