0:02 lighting has the power to make or break
0:03 a space unfortunately
0:05 unfortunately
0:07 it is often an afterthought and what
0:09 otherwise may have been a well-designed
0:11 room can be quickly ruined by poor
0:13 lighting choices
0:15 in this video i'll go through the three
0:17 common lighting mistakes and four useful
0:20 tips that you can easily follow
0:21 mistake one
0:24 incorrect color temperatures
0:25 one of the biggest sliding mistakes that
0:27 often come across is using an incorrect
0:30 lighting temperature
0:32 color temperature is a spectrum measured
0:35 in kelvin ranging from 1000 to 10 000
0:38 kelvin going from warm to cool
0:40 the four main categories of light colors
0:42 are warm white
0:43 soft white
0:44 bright white
0:46 and daylight
0:50 warm white bulbs are 2700 to 3000 kelvin
0:53 and a mid or warm golden yellow light
0:54 it is a typical color emitted by an
0:56 incandescent bulb
0:58 warm white globes are most suited to bedrooms
0:59 bedrooms
1:02 living rooms and dining rooms as they
1:04 create a cozy inviting and calm atmosphere
1:06 atmosphere
1:10 soft white bulbs are 3000 to 4000 kelvin
1:11 and are slightly cooler than warm white bulbs
1:12 bulbs
1:15 they emit a yellowish white light
1:17 these bulbs are most appropriate to be
1:19 used in the bathrooms or kitchens as
1:21 they create a friendly and bright atmosphere
1:22 atmosphere
1:24 bright white bulbs are four thousand to
1:27 five thousand kelvin these lights emit a
1:30 color that is between white and blue
1:32 in terms of home applications
1:34 these flights are most suited to being
1:36 used in the home office or garage
1:39 the final category daylight is actually
1:41 quite deceptive
1:42 many of us think that daylight
1:44 corresponds with the globe that will
1:45 create a bright
1:47 light and airy space
1:50 however it actually creates the opposite
1:52 effect in fact
1:54 daylight bulbs create a sterile and cold
1:58 atmosphere as they emit blue tone light
2:00 these bulbs are usually used in hospital
2:03 commercial or office spaces as they
2:05 maximize color contrast which makes us
2:08 more alert and improves concentration
2:10 they create the opposite of a warm and
2:12 cozy atmosphere that you typically want
2:13 in a home
2:14 so it is best to avoid them where possible
2:16 possible luckily
2:17 luckily
2:19 these days you can get smart led bulbs
2:20 where not only the brightness of the
2:22 lights can be altered
2:24 but also the temperature
2:26 all through an app on your phone
2:28 a remote or another smart device like
2:33 if you have smart bulbs in your home but
2:35 set at the wrong temperature
2:38 this becomes very easy fix personally
2:39 personally
2:41 i like to use phillips heel bulbs as
2:43 they are very stable
2:45 produce nice color
2:48 and are intuitive to use
2:51 however these swoops can be quite pricey
2:53 so a budget alternative is the ikea trot
2:56 free system or the lifx system that
2:58 falls somewhere in between
2:59 i have this bulbs linked down below in
3:01 the description box so you can check
3:02 them out
3:04 mistake 2
3:06 mixing color temperatures
3:08 closely related to choosing the wrong
3:10 color temperature
3:12 another common mistake is having
3:13 inconsistent temperature in a single space
3:14 space
3:16 while you should use a warm white bulb
3:18 in a bedroom and a soft white bulb in a
3:21 bathroom you shouldn't mix this to color
3:23 temperatures in a singular room
3:24 this is because when two lights of
3:27 different colors are in close proximity
3:29 the differences in temperature became
3:30 very apparent
3:33 which is startling and creates an uneasy
3:35 disjointed feel in the room
3:37 it makes furniture and room decor as
3:40 well as skin tones look off
3:41 you may be wondering
3:43 what to do in the open plan space where
3:45 the living and kitchen areas are in the
3:47 same space
3:48 the general rule is that a kitchen
3:50 should have a cooler tone light than a
3:52 living area however
3:53 however
3:55 in this instance a compromise can be
3:57 made by using a color temperature in
4:00 between warm white and soft white so
4:02 that we have a consistent temperature
4:06 mistake three not layering lighting
4:08 the third mistake is not using enough
4:10 types of lighting throughout a space
4:12 this is one of the biggest mistake that
4:15 i've personally made in the past
4:16 there are four types of lighting used in homes
4:17 homes
4:19 overhead lighting
4:21 ambient lighting
4:24 task lighting and accent lighting
4:26 it is important to use at least two if
4:27 not all of these lighting types in a
4:30 room at various places and heights so
4:32 the light is evenly dispersed
4:34 this process is known as layering lighting
4:36 lighting
4:38 overhead lighting most commonly comes in
4:40 the form of ceiling lights
4:42 pretty much every room in the house has
4:43 overhead lighting
4:45 and many people make the mistake of
4:47 slowly relying on it as their light source
4:48 source
4:50 as the light source is from above this
4:52 type of lighting often creates a very
4:54 unflattering shadow onto people and objects
4:55 objects
4:57 especially if it isn't used with other
4:59 types of lighting
5:02 next there is ambient lighting
5:04 this type of lighting has a soft natural feeling
5:05 feeling
5:08 an example would be a lamp or pendant
5:10 with a fabric shade or an opaque glass
5:14 shade as they create a soft warm glow ultimately
5:15 ultimately
5:16 you should aim to have a few of these
5:18 spread out across the room to evenly
5:24 tusk lighting also known as directional lighting
5:26 lighting
5:28 this is used in areas where a specific
5:30 task is completed
5:31 such as reading
5:34 writing or preparing food
5:36 in contrast to ambient lighting that
5:38 serves both an aesthetic and functional purpose
5:39 purpose
5:41 task lighting is the most functional
5:43 layer of light
5:45 it is much brighter and has a narrow
5:46 beam rather than ambient lighting that
5:50 is dimmer and has an even glow
5:51 some examples of task lights are table
5:55 lamps bathroom vanity lights track
6:02 finally
6:04 accent lighting
6:06 this is the least functional and most
6:08 aesthetic form of lighting used to bring
6:10 attention to certain areas or objects
6:12 such as an artwork
6:16 furnishing or architectural details
6:17 it is often used to make the space more
6:19 dramatic and stylish by increasing contrast
6:21 contrast
6:23 accent lighting is generally brighter
6:24 than ambient lighting
6:27 so it should only be used sparingly
6:30 a few examples may be recessed led light
6:33 strips under vanities or behind mirrors
6:34 recessed spot ceiling lights or track
6:36 lights that are angled to accentuate a
6:40 certain object or feature in a room
6:42 if you own your own home there are
6:44 unlimited options for layering lighting
6:47 such as pendant lights chandeliers wall
6:51 sconces and track lighting to name a few
6:53 if you're renting
6:54 some rental friendly solutions include
6:56 table lamps
6:59 floor lamps overhead lamps and light
7:01 strips as they don't require drilling or
7:02 routing cables
7:05 if simple drilling is allowed a scone or
7:07 wall lamp can be a great addition
7:09 just make sure to hide the wire using
7:11 cable routers
7:13 combining the sliding types at varying
7:15 heights and locations throughout a room
7:17 can really elevate the space
7:19 it creates a dynamic environment as
7:22 colors textures and other design
7:25 elements are enhanced
7:26 tip 1
7:28 match lighting fixtures to other
7:30 elements in the room while we have
7:32 mainly been focused on how to enhance
7:33 the feel of a room
7:35 it is equally important to consider the look
7:36 look
7:38 when choosing lighting fixtures
7:40 you want to match them to other elements
7:43 in your home for continuity
7:45 this can be done through color texture
7:46 texture
7:48 or material so that the space feels
7:51 cohesive and not siloed
7:53 one of the simplest way to do this is by
7:55 matching your lighting fixtures to your hardware
7:56 hardware
7:59 as an example in your kitchen you may
8:01 have matte black hardware such as tabs
8:03 or cupboard handles
8:04 you will want to match these features
8:06 with lighting fixtures that is also
8:10 matte black so the space is cohesive similarly
8:11 similarly
8:12 if you have matte black elements in your
8:14 living room
8:15 a matte black floor lamp could complete
8:17 the look
8:19 this tends to be more profound in the
8:21 bathroom where you have a lot of metals
8:22 going on
8:24 you'll often see designers using similar
8:26 material or color for the sconces or
8:29 lamps as found in the hardware to create
8:31 a cohesive look
8:33 the same concept also applies outside of metals
8:34 metals
8:36 such as matching textures like the tan
8:38 or using similar fabrics that speak to
8:41 each other
8:42 tip 2
8:45 diffuse your light sources
8:46 another tip is to diffuse your light
8:50 sources as it reduces harsh shadows
8:52 diffusing light sources has a similar
8:53 effect to a cloud going in front of the sun
8:55 sun
8:57 when it's cloudy you can see more
8:59 clearly than when you're in direct sunlight
9:00 sunlight
9:02 this concept is also used in photography
9:05 and filmmaking as the subject under a
9:07 diffuse light looks much more flattering
9:09 than a direct light
9:11 incorporating lime shades or opal glass
9:13 shades will help soften and break up the
9:16 light to make the space more flattering
9:17 for both the people and objects around it
9:19 it
9:21 while sometimes you may want an exposed
9:23 light for visual interest
9:25 consider also having a source of diffuse
9:27 light to evenly lit the room [Music]
9:29 [Music]
9:30 tip 3
9:32 use dimmers
9:33 on a similar note
9:35 it is important to be able to adjust the
9:37 brightness of lights depending on the
9:38 time of day and task you want to accomplish
9:40 accomplish
9:41 you don't want to have a super bright
9:44 light before going to bed or dim light
9:45 when reading
9:47 dimming lights give you the ability to
9:50 alter the atmosphere of your space as an example
9:51 example
9:53 you may want to turn down the lights in
9:54 your dining room when entertaining to
9:58 create a more intimate atmosphere traditionally
9:59 traditionally
10:00 lights could only be dimmed through
10:03 hardware on the light switch
10:05 however nowadays it can be done
10:07 digitally through smart bulbs
10:09 as i mentioned before i like to use
10:11 philips hue bulbs that can be dimmed
10:13 through an app or remote but there are
10:15 also budget alternatives such as the
10:20 smart loops are a great option for
10:22 renters however
10:24 if you're thinking of renovating or if
10:26 you're in the process of building your
10:27 own home
10:29 integrating traditional dimmers or smart
10:31 switches works well and isn't too expensive
10:35 tip 4
10:38 light your outdoor spaces
10:40 the final lighting tip that is often
10:42 considered as an afterthought is sliding
10:44 outdoor spaces including your balconies
10:47 and backyards at night time a pitch
10:49 black window encloses an interior and
10:51 makes it feel small by adding lights
10:54 outside such as outdoor sconces
10:56 spotlights in a pot plant
10:58 or by lighting up a tree with very
11:00 lights you can make your room feel
11:02 larger as it encourages you to look
11:04 outside which creates the illusion of a
11:06 larger space
11:07 while it does take some time and
11:09 patience to perfect lighting in a room
11:11 it is well worth the effort so you can
11:13 enjoy a properly lit room no matter the
11:16 time of day or task
