0:02 today we're talking about the loudest
0:03 aircraft of all time ladies and
0:19 [Music]
0:20 real quick before we get too far into
0:22 this this video is brought to you by my
0:23 favorite Sporting Goods store Shields
0:25 they have a bunch of amazing retail
0:26 locations all across the U.S but if you
0:28 don't live near any of those they have
0:29 an even better online store that I'm
0:31 going to have linked down below where
0:32 they have literally anything that has
0:33 anything to do with going outside
0:35 hunting gear fishing gear camping gear
0:37 they have it all and I would highly
0:38 recommend you go check out their site
0:40 again that is linked down below let's
0:41 get back to the video now this is
0:43 probably one of the most hated aircrafts
0:45 of all time both by the pilots and the
0:46 people that worked on it it was
0:48 unaffectionately given the nickname of
0:50 and I quote the mighty ear Banger which
0:52 is just it's
0:55 it we need to move on all right here's
0:57 the deal Once Upon a Time in the 1950s
0:58 the United States Navy decided that they
1:00 wanted a new type of carrier fighter
1:01 that would be able to take off from an
1:03 aircraft carrier without using the
1:04 Catapult you know that thing that eats
1:11 apparently reloading the Catapult was
1:13 taking too long and the Navy wanted to
1:14 be able to get more planes in the air
1:16 quicker to deliver on Health Care faster
1:18 not a terrible goal the only problem was
1:20 jet technology at this point in time
1:22 simply would not allow a jet to do this
1:24 which meant that this new fighter was
1:25 going to have to be a prop driven plane
1:27 like the Skyraider but the only problem
1:28 with that was is that the Navy demanded
1:30 that this new fighter had the same
1:32 ability as a jet okay if you're not
1:33 picking up what I'm putting down I'm
1:34 trying to tell you that the Navy is
1:36 about to try to make a supersonic prop
1:38 driven plane I'm going to say that again
1:40 but slower the United States Navy is
1:42 gonna try to get a plane with a
1:44 propeller to try to break the sound
1:46 barrier okay that's like a [ __ ] Amish
1:48 guy in a boogie breaking a land speed
1:50 record they're not supposed to do that
1:51 but they're gonna try it anyways because
1:54 America so they take an f-84 Thunder
1:56 streak they ripped the jet engine out of
1:57 the middle and then cram an enormous
2:00 Allison t40 engine inside of it and slap
2:02 a propeller on the front okay here's the
2:04 deal with this engine it is 5850
2:06 horsepower and it doesn't have a
2:07 throttle it just runs at a hundred
2:10 percent non-stop all the time so the
2:11 only way they were actually able to
2:12 control the speed of the airplane was to
2:14 change the pitch of the blades on the
2:15 propeller which you can kind of see here
2:17 there's those circles that changes the
2:19 angle makes the plane go faster or
2:21 slower without having to change the
2:22 speed of the engine the only problem
2:23 with that was is when the blades were
2:26 put to Max pitch to move the most air to
2:28 go the fastest it generated so much
2:30 torque that while the propeller was
2:32 going one way the engine wanted to spin
2:34 the entire plane the other way basically
2:36 forcing the plane to do a Non-Stop
2:40 barrel roll do a barrel roll do a barrel
2:42 roll no barrel roll
2:45 and here's the thing that wasn't even
2:47 really the problem the problem was the
2:49 Noise Okay bear with me while I try to
2:50 explain this I'm not a science teacher
2:52 but when you look at a propeller and you
2:53 see the blades the tips of the blades
2:55 are traveling faster than the base of
2:56 the blades because as it rotates it has
2:58 to cover a greater amount of distance in
3:00 the same amount of time does that make
3:01 sense to everybody good great okay
3:03 here's what was happening that engine is
3:05 turning this propeller at over 900 miles
3:07 an hour and because the tips are
3:09 traveling faster than the base of the
3:12 blades the last 12 inches of the tip of
3:14 each blade so you have three blades
3:16 three tips are all breaking the sound
3:18 barrier but the bases of those blades
3:20 were not breaking the sound barrier so
3:22 each blade would create a sonic boom
3:24 back out and then create another Sonic
3:27 Boom almost immediately and this was
3:29 generating over 900 Sonic booms per
3:32 second which basically sounded like one
3:34 constant Sonic Boom to everybody
3:35 involved to give you an idea of how loud
3:37 this was it's believed that this created
3:39 over 200 decibels of noise the only
3:41 thing known to mankind louder than that
3:43 is the detonation of a major nuclear
3:45 warhead or a volcano okay this thing was
3:48 so loud that the shock waves sent one of
3:50 the engineers into a seizure it knocked
3:53 one of the mechanics unconscious and
3:56 gave everyone anywhere near it nausea
3:58 headaches and vomiting it was so loud
4:01 that people in the next town over 45
4:04 miles away were complaining at how loud
4:06 this thing was and here's the part where
4:07 I'm gonna upset you I don't have any
4:10 audio of it up close because it would
4:12 literally destroy any microphone that
4:13 got near it the best I can give you is
4:16 this which is a recording of it from the
4:18 ground as this thing is flying overhead
4:27 this plane is so [ __ ] loud it's
4:28 almost stealthy I mean are you gonna
4:30 hear it coming from 50 miles away sure
4:32 for a second then you're never gonna
4:34 [ __ ] hear anything ever again I mean
4:35 you can't hear the Americans coming if
4:37 you can't hear that's just science so
4:39 clearly this aircraft is extremely
4:40 dangerous to anybody that's even
4:43 remotely near it especially the pilot
4:45 who's literally sitting behind 900 Sonic
4:47 booms per second that are trying to make
4:49 him vomit lose Consciousness and [ __ ]
4:51 his pants all at the same time and if
4:53 that wasn't enough Winnie finally does
4:55 get that plane into the air it's gonna
4:57 try to torque him into a barrel roll the
5:00 entire time so obviously we're only
5:03 gonna test fly it like 12 times because
5:06 you know safety third get ready so they
5:07 find two test pilots to fly this
5:09 monstrosity the first test pilot takes
5:11 it up in the air brings it back down
5:14 lands it it's a successful test flight I
5:16 guess he gets out of the cockpit walks
5:18 up to the engineer of the entire project
5:20 and says and I quote you're not big
5:21 enough and there's not enough of you to
5:23 get me back in that plane okay and
5:25 that's kind coming from a test pilot
5:27 that dude's already [ __ ] nuts bear in
5:29 mind the U.S Air Force approached him
5:31 and was like hey would you like to drive
5:34 a propeller driven plane past the sound
5:37 barrier and he said yes and now you have
5:39 this guy backing out so clearly this
5:42 plane is [ __ ] ridiculous cue This Man
5:45 Hank beard he is the second test pilot
5:48 that did the other 11 test flights and
5:50 of the 11 test flights he had to crash
5:52 land at 10 [ __ ] times this dude is
5:54 literally just giving the Grim Reaper
5:56 blue balls as an occupation okay we
5:58 don't know this for sure but Legend has
5:59 it the only thing that kept that plane
6:01 from Barrel rolling non-stop was the
6:03 sheer weight of this man's nut sack and
6:05 when he was asked what he thought about
6:07 the subject after the test flights he
6:10 replied with and I quote what so after
6:11 12 test flights they decide to cancel
6:14 the entire project not because it's too
6:15 dangerous not because it required 10
6:18 crash Landings but because the Perpetual
6:20 Sonic booms are literally rattling the
6:22 airplane apart as well as completely
6:24 destroying all this sensitive
6:26 Electronics inside the air control tower
6:27 in conclusion at the end of all the
6:29 testing there was a verified speed of
6:32 520 miles an hour making the Thunder
6:34 Screech one of the fastest prop planes
6:35 of all time however there was an
6:39 unverified speed of 623 miles an hour
6:41 which would make it the fastest prop
6:44 plane ever and definitely the loudest
6:46 thank you for watching best way to
