0:02 hey guys welcome to lingo marina today
0:04 is a very important class I'm gonna
0:06 teach you how to introduce yourself and
0:09 maybe you think well this is easy I just
0:12 say hi my name is marina I'm 29 years
0:15 old I am from Russia and then that's it
0:17 but actually no in my videos I like to
0:20 cover cultural aspects I like to cover
0:23 the context like if you're reaching out
0:25 to somebody on Instagram you wouldn't do
0:27 this you wouldn't feel like hi my name
0:29 is Mary and I'm 29 years old
0:32 you would adapt your introduction to
0:36 whatever is happening around you so in
0:37 this video I'm gonna teach you phrases
0:40 and I'm gonna teach you some cultural
0:42 things that you should consider when
0:44 you're meeting people abroad when you're
0:46 talking to native speakers when you're
0:48 reaching out to people and trying to
0:50 make new friends so if you're interested
1:09 my task for you right now is to take an
1:11 exercise book and when I'll be giving
1:14 you phrases I want you to create at
1:16 least four introductions of yourself
1:19 number one the introduction that you
1:22 would use for a party like if you're at
1:24 a party with native speakers how would
1:25 you introduce yourself the second one is
1:28 an introduction that is more formal for
1:32 example at work or at the university or
1:34 maybe you're just talking to colleagues
1:37 three introduction in your email if
1:39 you're writing for work and for
1:41 introduction for Instagram for example
1:43 if you're reaching out to me on
1:44 Instagram how you would introduce
1:48 yourself by the way rule number one for
1:50 all introductions you have to be
1:53 interesting for example you're at a
1:55 party everyone is having fun
1:57 music is loud people are eating they
2:00 want to you know dance communicate and
2:02 what you do you're like hi my name is
2:05 marina I'm from Russia I live in San
2:07 Francisco since 2016 I've run three
2:10 channels I have a company and the person
2:13 who's listening to you is already bored
2:17 he's like oh my god what is she doing so
2:20 always always think about the context
2:23 like if I'm at a party and I want to
2:25 approach somebody I would be like hey my
2:27 name is marina I'm a youtuber and I have
2:29 over a million followers and that's it
2:30 and the next thing I would do I would
2:32 ask that person something else because
2:34 the whole purpose of introducing
2:37 yourself is to start a conversation not
2:40 to make somebody super bored from the
2:42 start if we're talking about an email
2:45 you would not start your email like hey
2:47 my name is marina McGill Cole because
2:50 hello marina McGill Co is what your
2:53 email says already there is no need to
2:55 waste somebody's time and reintroduce
2:57 yourself on the other hand you can say
2:58 hey this
3:02 Maryna from this company this is marina
3:05 we met at a party yesterday like give
3:07 them some context no need to like
3:09 reintroduce herself again no need to
3:11 mention your first name and last name if
3:14 it's already in your email that's enough
3:16 so again now I'm gonna give you phrases
3:19 and you're gonna write them down to your
3:21 four different introductions but please
3:23 please make sure you're always in the
3:25 context you always know what's happening
3:27 and by the way if you learn those
3:29 introductions by heart it's gonna be
3:32 really easy for you I know sometimes at
3:34 school you have this big topic like
3:37 introducing yourself or like my life and
3:40 it's always this big no need to go that
3:42 way it should be small it should be
3:44 short and it should be interesting and
3:46 exciting so when you're meeting somebody
3:50 the first thing you say is hello super
3:52 formal right what is super formal hello
3:54 good evening good morning good afternoon
3:57 if you want to be more informal you can
3:59 say hey hi
4:03 or what's up this is all very informal
4:04 and then you're stating your name
4:07 normally what would say I am marina you
4:10 can also say my name is marina if it's
4:12 informally like hey I'm marina nice to
4:15 meet you if you are on the phone you can
4:18 say hey hello this is marina speaking I
4:20 would like to talk to John from
4:22 marketing department or you can just say
4:25 hey marina speaking can I please talk to
4:28 John by the way if you feel that you
4:30 need more practice if you feel that you
4:31 need a boost to your English language
4:34 skills I'm very happy to say that lingo
4:36 des is supporting this video and has
4:38 been supporting this channel for a while
4:41 and they're launching another sprint in
4:42 English they used to call it marathon
4:44 but they have decided to start calling
4:47 it sprint because you know it's very
4:50 intensive it's it lasts for three months
4:52 but if you follow the schedule you get
4:55 up to 100 percent refund I've already
4:56 shared information about these marathons
4:59 in my previous videos and I'm getting a
5:00 lot of comments from you guys
5:02 thanking me for giving you this
5:05 opportunity to practice your English and
5:07 any of you practicing it for free the
5:10 Sprint starts on January 7th 2020 and
5:14 lasts until April 5th 2020 you have to
5:16 participate in an agreed number of group

5:20 30 classes for super sprint and 15
5:23 classes for Sprint you can take only one
5:25 class per day every day and by the way
5:27 you can join the sprint in English
5:30 German Spanish French and business
5:31 English it doesn't matter what level
5:33 you're at right now there are courses
5:35 for every single level beginner
5:37 intermediate advanced you need to sign
5:40 up for the sprint before December 19th
5:42 which sounds like a great new year's
5:45 resolution there is a 49 your deposit to
5:47 secure your spot and it will be taken
5:50 off your first month of payment and by
5:51 the way if you successfully complete the
5:54 sprint this forty nine your deposit will
5:57 be returned to you over twenty thousand
5:59 students have already participated so
6:01 this is your chance to improve your
6:03 English language skills and by the way
6:04 because you're watching this video
6:07 please use my promo code sprint 19 to
6:09 get ten years off of your initial
6:12 payment of that 49 euro
6:13 deposit if you want to hear more stories
6:16 of other students about the sprint check
6:19 on gotas Instagram now let's continue to
6:21 the class so remember at the beginning
6:23 of this video I told you that you should
6:25 be interesting and you should be within
6:27 the context so if you're at a party
6:29 mention your hobby
6:31 so after mentioning your name maybe
6:33 mention your hobby or what you do if you
6:36 are in a formal situation then mention
6:39 what you're doing for a living I work
6:42 for a company acts I've been working for
6:45 them for five years or if you're in the
6:48 NACA demmick environment I am doing my
6:51 MBA right now I am in my fourth year of
6:54 bachelors program I am just about to
6:57 graduate from a university so all of
7:00 those phrases will help you get into
7:01 context and will help other people learn
7:03 more about you something that is
7:06 relevant to the situation then if you
7:08 feel that you're an international
7:10 environment where people come from
7:12 different backgrounds you can also
7:14 mention where you're from I am
7:16 originally from Russia but I've been
7:19 living in San Francisco since 2016 or
7:22 you can say I was born and raised in
7:25 Italy but I moved to the United States
7:27 two years ago or I can just say I grew
7:31 up in France the next thing I know it's
7:33 cool they teach us to mention our age
7:35 and sometimes you have this topics like
7:38 a lot of information about you and
7:41 somewhere at the beginning you're say
7:43 I'm 20 years old I'm 25 years old in
7:45 Western cultures we don't really talk
7:49 about age like that only if you're asked
7:51 and you normally ask that a doctor's
7:53 appointment or somewhere we need to fill
7:55 in a questionnaire because there are a
7:57 lot of discrimination laws like
8:00 discriminating by age and stuff which is
8:03 prohibited so people don't really talk
8:05 about their age at all only if you're
8:08 asked so don't do that don't do like hey
8:10 my name is Marie and I'm 29 years old
8:12 because it sounds a little weird it
8:14 sounds a little off people don't really
8:15 mention their age but again if you're
8:18 asked the standard phrase I'm 29 years old
8:19 old
8:21 please remember the rule that you don't
8:24 have to say too much sometimes I did
8:27 team's DMS is a direct message on
8:29 Instagram and I get them like that hey
8:33 my name is Paula I'm from Lithuania I
8:35 have been studying mathematics since
8:38 2016 I'm doing this this and that
8:42 I'm originally from Croatia but I moved
8:44 to the city and I'm like wow what is
8:47 this person for me and there's some
8:49 somewhere in between there's like a
8:51 question but because there's so much
8:53 information I just don't have time to
8:55 read it all same goes for emails if
8:56 you're writing an email
8:58 please be short and be concise in one of
9:00 your templates it's like your email or a
9:03 DM direct message on Instagram keep it
9:05 short you don't need to reintroduce
9:08 yourself if your tag is already saying
9:10 your name you can say hey I've been
9:12 following you for a couple of years want
9:14 to ask a question do you do this this
9:16 enough that's it really easy to read and
9:19 it's a really nice way to introduce
9:21 yourself through a DM
9:23 the modern email hey this is marina from
9:26 linguae trip I was wondering if you do
9:28 this this is it thank you now let's go
9:30 back to remembering why we're doing all
9:32 of this we're doing all of this to build
9:35 a relationship so when you've done
9:37 introducing yourself
9:39 I would ask something that it would
9:42 provoke another person to reply like hey
9:43 my name is Reena I'm a youtuber
9:46 do you watch anyone on YouTube do you
9:48 like YouTube this is a conversation
9:50 starter and the person be like oh yeah
9:53 my god I love kasenyi you like you start
9:54 this conversation or if you're in an
9:56 academic environment you're like I'm
9:59 graduating from my bachelor's program
10:01 and I was writing about global warming
10:03 by the way do you know that I don't know
10:06 in 20 years have San Francisco be
10:07 underwater I'm not sure I'm just
10:09 mentioning that hope you would be like
10:10 what oh my god really
10:12 and then you started conversate you know
10:13 they wouldn't be so happy about it
10:15 probably but this is the way you start a
10:17 conversation so always think about a
10:20 follow-up question make a person
10:22 interested have a person talk about
10:24 themselves you can ask them on what do
10:27 you do we'll brought you to this event I
10:29 will brought you to San Francisco so do
10:32 that start this conversation body
10:35 language is also very important thing to remember
10:35 remember
10:38 invest in cultures we shake hands even
10:40 if you're two women even if you're a man
10:42 grid and a woman you would shake her
10:45 hand please don't do like hand kissing
10:48 or kissing on the cheek this is not
10:50 really common what is common though is
10:52 hugging people and I'm surprised
10:55 sometimes my friends introduced me to
10:56 their friends and I'm seeing this
10:58 people's the first time and they're like
11:00 oh hey marina nice to meet you and they
11:03 hug me like wow that's super cool or
11:05 you've been talking to a person for five
11:07 minutes and you finish conversation by
11:09 hugging each other this is a really
11:11 Western I know maybe this is very San
11:13 Francisco California people are so
11:14 friendly here but yeah
11:18 Smyly maintaining eye contact shaking
11:20 hands hugging people if it's informal
11:23 this is totally okay to do and yeah
11:24 always remember about the cultural
11:27 context it's impolite to ask about
11:30 politics religion age marital status
11:32 it seems a little weird since a little
11:35 off sometimes so make sure you know
11:37 what's happening in a culture that
11:40 you're interacting in that was it for me
11:42 guys thank you so much for watching this
11:43 video up to the very end if you enjoyed
11:46 it please like it I hope you did your
11:48 homework or at least you're gonna do it
11:50 now and create your own introductions
11:52 that you can alert my heart because it's
11:55 gonna make your conversation skills a
11:58 lot better and it will help you the next
11:59 time you meet a native speaker instead
12:02 of being nervous you'd be like oh I know
12:04 this I know how to introduce myself and
12:06 thank you so much and I will see you in
