0:03 the following presentation is on the
0:05 causes and results of the Spanish
0:08 American war so while you're viewing
0:10 this and listening to this presentation
0:12 you should have your document called
0:14 causes and results of the Spanish
0:17 American war open in a side by side pain
0:25 go the first cause of the Spanish
0:28 American war is the fact um that
0:30 Americans wanted to protect their
0:32 business interests in Cuba so make sure
0:34 you fill in that blank with the word
0:37 business and one of the main examples of
0:40 American business interests in Cuba is
0:43 the sugar industry okay so Americans are very
0:44 very
0:47 concerned um with Spain controlling Cuba
0:49 and the fact that their business might
0:53 suffer with the sugar
0:55 industry and take the time to look at
0:58 the pictures on each slide as we
1:01 go the next cause of the Spanish
1:04 American war is that Americans supported
1:07 Cuban Rebels against Spain so again fill
1:10 in the blank there with Rebels um
1:14 America you know threw off the power of
1:15 the British during the American
1:18 Revolution and at this point in history
1:22 they decide to also support Cuba's
1:25 decision to break free from Spain and
1:33 the next cause of the Spanish American
1:36 war is that the USS Maine which is a
1:39 ship sunk in Havana Harbor Havana is a
1:43 city in Cuba it's their Capital City
1:44 okay and as you can see from the images
1:48 below you see the USS main over here on
1:52 the left and then the battleship and
1:57 painting of it being blown up okay so
2:00 the US United States is very upset about
2:02 the USS main being sunk because it is
2:05 one of their ships and they choose to
2:07 blame the Spanish in this instance and
2:12 therefore go to war with Spain okay no
2:15 one really knows exactly how the USS me
2:18 sunk they don't know if it was a bomb or
2:21 an electrical fire or something totally
2:24 unrelated to either of those things but
2:27 the United States chose to blame Spain
2:29 in this incident and you can see from
2:31 this picture over here on this on the
2:32 right hand
2:37 side that the Mast from the main is
2:39 currently in Arlington Cemetery so you
2:42 can go right down to Washington DC and
2:44 see the Mast from the USS main they
2:52 cemetery and your fourth and final cause
2:54 of the Spanish American war is yellow
2:56 journalism this kind of factors in with
2:59 the main here the sinking of the USS
3:00 main okay
3:01 uh make sure you filling that blank with
3:04 yellow and then also type the definition
3:06 next to definition in your notes the
3:08 definition of yellow journalism is
3:10 dishonest and exaggeration in the
3:14 presentation of news for the purpose of
3:16 sensationalism okay so look at these
3:19 headlines over here to the right
3:21 destruction of the warship main was the
3:24 work of an enemy okay that headline is
3:29 designed to make you angry at this at Spain
3:30 Spain
3:32 okay so they really don't know how the
3:34 main was sunk but they jumped to the
3:36 conclusion that it was Spain and they
3:38 want to sensationalize this and make it
3:40 exciting for the
3:42 readers okay so here they also you also
3:46 see a reward posted $50,000 reward for
3:48 detection of the perpetrator of the main
3:51 outrage so if we find out who did it you
3:53 get $50,000 in a
3:56 reward okay and then at the bottom you
3:58 see where it says the naval officers
4:01 think that the was destroyed by a
4:03 Spanish mine okay so yellow journalism
4:04 is an
4:07 exaggeration it's a dishonest
4:10 presentation of what happened in order
4:13 to sensationalize it in the
4:17 news Okay pause this video at this point
4:20 and please complete the activity called
4:23 the Spanish American war events before
4:25 continuing with this presentation so we
4:28 just went walked through the causes
4:31 you're going to look through the events
4:34 of the Spanish amican war and then once
4:36 you're done completing the events
4:39 activity return to this video to
4:42 continue with the results of the war so
4:44 what happened
4:47 after all right results of the Spanish
4:49 American war continue to fill in the
4:52 blanks on your causes and results
4:56 document Cuban independence from Spain
4:59 okay so as a result of America's
5:01 supporting these Cuban Rebels Cuba
5:03 becomes an independent country and is no
5:05 longer under control of Spain and you
5:07 can see here in this map and you already
5:10 labeled it on your maps how close Cuba
5:14 is to Florida you can see why the United
5:16 States didn't want Spain to be that
5:18 close to them their influence to be
5:20 there okay and you can see another Cuban
5:28 right the United States gained territories
5:30 territories
5:32 overseas okay so after the war with
5:35 Spain which the United States won they
5:37 took control over some of the Spanish
5:41 territories one of those is Puerto Rico
5:43 one is Guam and one is the Philippines
5:46 and you can see them circled on the map
5:49 below so you have Guam Philippines and
5:52 Puerto Rico became US territories so
5:54 these lands are going to be under
5:57 control of the United States they're not
5:59 States they're territories so they're
6:00 under us
6:02 control so you have over here in the
6:04 Pacific you have the Philippines and you
6:07 have Guam and over here in the Caribbean
6:10 you have Puerto Rico okay Cuba does not
6:12 become a US Territory they become an independent
6:20 country the United States emerged as a
6:24 world power before this time the United
6:26 States focuses mostly on domestic
6:28 affairs those things that are taking
6:32 place within the borders of the US after
6:34 the Spanish American War the United
6:36 States is going to show its interest in
6:39 foreign affairs and that is the things
6:41 that are going on in other countries
6:43 around the world and because they won
6:45 this Spanish American War the United
6:47 States is going to show that it is a
6:51 world power it's a powerful country not
6:53 to be
6:56 overlooked so what what is important to
6:57 understand about this this corresponds
7:00 with the bottom of your document
7:02 the United States expanded its interest
7:04 in world affairs and acquired new
7:06 territories this is important because
7:08 again it shows how powerful the United
7:10 States has become and that the
7:12 traditionally more powerful European
7:15 countries need to take notice of the
7:18 United States and not discount it in
7:20 foreign and world
7:23 affairs this concludes the video on
7:25 causes and results of the Spanish
7:28 American war please see your teacher
7:30 with any further questions you may have
