0:01 project management explained in less
0:04 than 10 minutes let's get into it this
0:05 video is for those who are either
0:07 looking to break into project management
0:09 or for those who literally have no idea
0:11 what project management is but are
0:13 interested to learn more so let's start
0:15 with what is project management so in
0:17 one sentence project management is the
0:21 process of planning organizing and
0:24 managing resources to accomplish a goal
0:26 so why is project management important
0:28 well per chat GPT project management is
0:30 important because it helps helps
0:32 organizations achieve their goals by
0:34 ensuring projects are completed on time
0:37 within budget and to the required
0:39 quality standards it also helps to
0:41 manage risks and ensure that projects
0:43 are aligned with the organization's
0:46 strategic objectives wow that was a
0:48 mouthful so that was a lot of
0:50 information here's how I would explain
0:52 it basically you know when you work on a
0:55 team and you when you work for a company
0:58 you're likely hired for a certain role a
1:01 certain task right and likely you are
1:04 very good at doing your one thing that
1:07 you were hired for so for example when
1:11 it comes to a company that builds houses
1:12 often times you'll have someone who just
1:14 paints walls you'll have someone who
1:16 specializes in doing the roofing you
1:18 have someone that specializes in doing the
1:18 the
1:20 plumbing you have all these people that
1:24 are doing various types of jobs but the
1:26 project manager's role is to make sure
1:29 that all of these people that are really
1:31 good at doing their job they're doing it
1:33 in the right order and that they're
1:35 communicating with each other in order
1:36 to get the project done in the most
1:39 efficient way is a project manager 100%
1:42 necessary for a company you know in some
1:44 scenarios maybe not but in other
1:46 scenarios it's critical by my definition
1:50 a project manager is someone who
1:53 understands the business goal who
1:55 understands what needs to happen in
1:58 order for the goal to be achieved who
1:59 understands the right people and the
2:02 right order of operations to get the job
2:05 done so naturally you may ask okay well
2:08 why is a project manager necessary then
2:11 right let me give you an example where
2:12 you can really see the value ad that a
2:14 project manager
2:17 provides so let's think about maybe a
2:19 sub shop right name your favorite Jimmy John's
2:21 John's
2:25 Subway anyone out there in order to
2:28 create a sub sandwich you need to have
2:32 someone that creates the bread someone
2:36 that gives you the meat someone that
2:38 gets you all the vegetables all the
2:42 seasonings all the dressings you need
2:44 someone to give you the equipment in
2:46 order to toast the bread if that's what
2:49 your calling is and you need someone to
2:52 assemble all at the end so that's a lot
2:54 of different moving parts right so what
2:57 happens if you know the baker bakes the
3:00 bread and you know the the sub shop
3:02 hasn't opened yet well the baker loses
3:05 money because the sub shop isn't able to
3:07 purchase their bread to sell it what
3:10 happens if there's a shortage on you
3:13 know vegetables on the dressings well
3:14 the sub shop probably can't be
3:16 successful the customer really wants
3:18 that dressing at that spot and I know
3:20 I'm kind of going on tangent here but
3:22 stay with me where a project manager
3:26 comes into play is it's their job to
3:29 finding the most efficient way to get
3:31 all these different teams to get all
3:34 these moving Parts assembled and aligned
3:36 to make sure it's a Well oiled machine
3:38 so that you get to your end
3:41 goal so one example of this is you're a
3:44 project manager you'll make sure that
3:47 you align the bakery you'll align the
3:48 sub shop you'll align all of your
3:51 vendors and Distributors to make sure
3:53 that they are engaged at the right
3:55 points in time so that once the sub shop
3:58 opens you'll have all the materials and
3:59 all the goods your customer customers
4:01 will be loving it again probably a
4:03 pretty weird example to use here but I
4:05 like to use these visual examples
4:07 because they honestly help me with
4:09 understanding and interpreting you know
4:11 such an ambiguous role out there so in
4:13 conclusion project management is useful
4:15 because there's a lot of Chaos in this
4:18 world and project managers are skilled
4:21 in building processes in making the
4:23 chaos more understandable so that
4:25 companies and that teams can be more
4:27 efficient as a result of that efficiency
4:29 companies can often times generate more
4:31 Vue which is a direct value add to the
4:33 company so now that we've gone over what
4:36 is a project manager and you know why
4:37 should you care about project management
4:39 let's go over some of the key
4:42 fundamentals that every project manager
4:45 should know so in general there are five
4:49 phases that a project manager follows
4:52 from start to finish for a project phase
4:55 one is the initiation phase phase two is
4:57 the planning phase phase three is the
5:00 executing phase phase four is the
5:02 monitoring and controlling phase and
5:05 then phase five is the closing phase so
5:07 initiation phase that basically means
5:10 you know very start of a project it's
5:12 understanding who your teams are
5:14 understanding what the goals of the
5:17 project are understanding what resources
5:20 what limitations you have and to just
5:22 understand in general what needs to be
5:25 accomplished phase two planning phase
5:27 this is where the project manager
5:30 creates a master plan to figure out you
5:32 know how are we going to accomplish this
5:34 the master plan consists of many other
5:37 smaller plans you can think about like
5:41 cost plan resource plan vendor plans
5:44 scheduling plans all these different
5:46 plans that project manager should think
5:48 about in order to successfully reach the
5:51 end goal during the planning phase the
5:53 project manager is thinking about what
5:55 things need to be in place in order for
5:59 the project to be successful and how to
6:01 carry the project out very thoughtfully
6:03 phase three the executing phase this is
6:05 where all that preparation in the
6:08 planning phase is being put to the test
6:11 so you taking action on the plans that
6:13 you've put into place you're fully
6:15 mobilizing your teams and getting them
6:17 to work on the project and you're
6:18 tracking you're making sure things are
6:20 going smoothly phase four monitoring
6:23 controlling so the Project's now you
6:24 know actively being worked on you're
6:27 making progress hopefully monitoring
6:29 controlling phase is for the project
6:31 manager to keep an eye on the project to
6:34 make sure that things are progressing in
6:37 the right direction and within the right
6:39 time so if there are any roadblocks if
6:41 there are any issues the project
6:43 manager's responsibility is to figure
6:46 out the best way to resolve those issues
6:47 to free up their teams and to allow
6:49 their teams to focus on how to move
6:51 forward and then we reached phase five
6:53 the closing phase and this is honestly
6:55 one of the most exciting parts of a
6:57 project because all that hard work that
7:00 your teams have put in all the effort
7:01 throughout those months or potentially
7:04 years of you guys working on the project
7:06 finally comes to a close and you get to
7:10 deliver the final product or project to
7:11 you know whoever you've been working
7:13 with closing phase is exciting because
7:15 if things have gone well your client
7:18 will be super ecstatic and it'll be a
7:20 time of Celebration can be super
7:22 nerve-wracking if things do not go well
7:24 and there a lot of revisions there are a
7:26 lot of things to be made then but in
7:28 general those are the five phases that a
7:29 project manager
7:33 follows it's a process that helps to
7:35 organize how a project will be carried
7:37 out regardless of what industry you work
7:40 in Okay so we've gone over what is a
7:42 project manager why does it matter why
7:44 do you care and what are the phases of
7:46 project management I'll leave you guys
7:48 with one last piece before we get to the
7:50 conclusion and that is you know what do
7:52 I find most enjoyable about project
7:55 management personally I would say it's
7:58 the process Improvement part A lot of
8:00 times when you work at a company
8:02 um often times there are inefficiencies
8:04 especially as a company grows and scales
8:07 a lot of times things just aren't being
8:09 done in a very strategic or efficient
8:12 manner being able to provide order to a
8:15 world full of chaos is super exciting
8:17 you get to ultimately see the benefits
8:20 that manifest from that so helping teams
8:22 put process together to make things just
8:25 better seeing my teammates faces when
8:27 you know some of the Pains of their work
8:28 have been alleviated I think that's one
8:31 of the most exciting parts of being a
8:32 project manager to add on to that as
8:36 well I would say being able to just work
8:39 on new things as a project manager you
8:42 get assigned new projects and ultimately
8:44 the exciting part is there is a start
8:46 and there is a finish once a project is
8:49 complete you get the satisfaction of
8:51 delivering you know something to your
8:53 client getting to see their reactions
8:55 and if you done a good job you've
8:57 created you know a new business partner
8:59 and things never get boring when it
9:02 comes to projects every project is
9:04 completely different even on paper if
9:06 it's the exact same it's still not
9:07 because you're working with different
9:09 stakeholders you're working with
9:10 different types of people being
9:12 successful at those projects is
9:13 something that continues to move me
9:15 forward I hope you found this video
9:17 informative and helpful you know for
