0:08 biodiversity is a term that represents
0:12 the total variety of all life on Earth
0:14 that's a big thing
0:17 to sum up thousands of different world
0:20 habitats millions of different species
0:23 billions of different individuals and
0:25 the trillions of different
0:31 characteristics they all have the total
0:34 biodiversity of our planet is immense
0:38 which is a good thing because the more
0:41 biodiversity the more secure all life on
0:46 Earth is including ourselves only when
0:49 life is at its most varied vigorous
0:54 biodiverse can we hope to thrive we may
0:58 not know it but we need towering forests
1:01 across one-third of the land surface to
1:03 block away carbon and keep the climate
1:07 stable we need millions of pollinators
1:09 and billions of soil organisms and
1:12 megatons of plankton to keep the food we
1:18 eat in supply we need strange plants
1:20 deep in jungles to create our medicines
1:24 and coral reefs and mangrove swamps to
1:26 protect the coasts we depend upon our
1:30 planets biodiversity provides all the
1:33 things we need for free but it will only
1:36 do so if there's lots of it and at the
1:41 moment it's under attack in the last 50
1:43 years our activities have dramatically
1:47 reduced biodiversity across the globe
1:50 we've snuffed out habitats reduced
1:53 populations of wild animals by 60% and
1:58 even driven whole species extinct
2:00 the number of lions in Africa has
2:04 dropped by 65 percent the number of
2:06 individual flying insects in Europe has
2:10 dropped by 75% the number of bluefin
2:14 tuna in the Pacific has dropped by 95
2:17 percent biodiversity is dropping
2:21 everywhere and fast this is catastrophic
2:25 for nature and therefore ourselves we
2:27 talk about climate change a lot but
2:30 biodiversity loss is as important an
2:33 issue how do we stop this loss of life
2:37 how do we ensure the biodiversity our
2:39 planet's vital statistic begins to
2:43 increase again in fact we already know
