1:10 what bird was mostly known for was his
1:13 expedition he explored places no one
1:15 wanted to go you see bird always wanted
1:17 to be the first in everything it was
1:19 like an obsession for him which could be
1:20 why he had so many first awards tagged
1:23 to him like being the first and youngest
1:25 Admiral at just the age of 41 his
1:27 obsession with being the first is why he
1:29 had no problem leading the expedition to Antarctica
1:35 from the early 1900s to the early 2000s
1:37 he led five different trips to the
1:39 Antarctic the last three of these trips
1:42 were paid for by the US government while
1:43 the first two were from his pocket and
1:46 some Believers Bird's first trip to the
1:49 Antarctic took place in 1928 with two
1:52 ships and three airplanes throughout the
1:54 summer trips were made to take pictures
1:57 and study the rocks and radio contact
1:58 with the outside world was kept at all
2:02 times then during the summer of 1933 and
2:05 1934 bird went on his second trip and
2:07 worked alone for 5 months at what was
2:09 known as an advanced base which was a
2:11 meteorological station it was during
2:13 this Expedition that he almost died from
2:15 carbon monoxide poisoning from a stove
2:17 that didn't have enough air flow while
2:18 all these were great and useful
2:20 Expeditions those were not the
2:22 Expeditions that people talked about the
2:24 first two were free of any sort of
2:26 controversies but the third one wasn't
2:28 and weirdly enough this was when the
2:29 government started getting involved with
2:34 Bird's Expedition from 1946 to 1947 bird
2:36 LED an expedition called operation high
2:38 jump which set up a research base on the
2:42 Ross ice shelf called Little America for
2:43 for
2:46 Antarctica a composite portrait of a
2:48 continent which has challenged man since
2:50 first he could sail beyond the limits of his

2:55 Horizon the Antarctic World War II had
2:57 shown that us ships and aircraft were
2:59 not up to cold weather ships that were

3:22 distance operation high jump would be
3:24 created to test and find answers to
3:27 these questions a naval task force would
3:29 go to Antarctica as part of a drill to
3:31 see how well the equipment stood out
