0:03 why in the books is Jack and Hagar in
0:06 Old Town is he there to kill someone or
0:09 to learn something if so what or who
0:11 let's take a look
0:13 hi everyone this is Robert welcome to in
0:16 deep geek on this channel we dive deep
0:18 into A Song of Ice and Fire as well as
0:20 other great fantasy books and TV shows
0:21 like the Lord of the Rings and The Witcher
0:23 Witcher
0:26 this video is the next in my series on
0:28 the role of the Faceless Men In A Song
0:30 of Ice and Fire because they are a lot
0:33 more than just an Assassin's Guild you
0:35 can watch this as a standalone video but
0:37 it builds on a lot of what we covered
0:40 earlier in the series in this video and
0:42 the last one coming out soon will be
0:44 tying together a lot of threads we
0:46 unpicked earlier about what the Faceless
0:49 Men actually want so if you want to go
0:51 back and watch those videos first and
0:54 then come back here feel free
0:56 the starting point for this video is
0:58 that in the books although not in the
1:01 show in the prologue to A Feast for
1:03 Crows The Faceless man we know as Jack
1:06 and Hagar seems to have arrived in Old
1:08 Town the seat of the maesters for
1:10 reasons that are initially not entirely
1:13 clear as he's a Face Changer we
1:15 obviously can't be entirely sure that
1:17 this is the same person but George RR
1:18 Martin has dropped so many hints and
1:21 clues that it seems beyond Reasonable
1:23 Doubt scrolling back to the last time we
1:25 saw Jack and in roughly August of the
1:29 Year 299 AC he took his leave of Aya
1:30 after trying to persuade her to go to
1:33 braavos with him she decides not to at
1:35 that point wanting to go back to her
1:38 family so Jack and leaves without her
1:41 saying that he has duties to attend to
1:43 presumably not hugely time critical
1:45 duties as he was willing to take Aya to
1:47 braavos First and he changes his face
1:50 his Jack and face apparently no longer
1:52 useful to him we get a good description
1:56 though of his new face his cheeks grew
2:00 Fuller his eyes closer his nose hooked a
2:01 scar appeared on his right cheek where
2:03 no scar had been before and when he
2:06 shook his head his long straight hair
2:09 half red and half white dissolved away
2:13 to reveal a cap of tight black curls
2:16 is interesting not just because it's the
2:18 first time that Arya sees a faceless man
2:21 changing his face but because six months
2:23 later someone calling themselves The
2:25 Alchemist with that exact description
2:28 appears in Old Town in the prologue to A
2:30 Feast for Crows for the most part he
2:32 keeps to the shadows and doesn't reveal
2:34 his face but when he does it is
2:37 described like this
2:40 ordinary with full cheeks and the shadow
2:43 of a beard a scar showed faintly on his
2:45 right cheek he had a hooked nose and a
2:48 mat of dense black hair that curled
2:50 tightly around his ears
2:53 full cheeks a scar on his right cheek a
2:56 hooked nose and black curly hair cropped
2:58 short now this could just be a
3:00 coincidence of descriptions but what
3:03 happens next seems to suggest that it
3:05 isn't the prologue and therefore the
3:06 description we have are from the
3:09 perspective of Pate a dim and not very
3:12 talented novice in the Citadel he is
3:14 failing his exams and is obsessed with
3:17 taking the maiden head of Rosie a young
3:19 woman at a local Tavern but he can't
3:22 afford it he needs a gold coin
3:25 happily for him an alchemist suddenly
3:27 appears and offers to give him a gold
3:29 coin in exchange for use of a key to the
3:32 Citadel that he is uniquely in a
3:34 position to steal we'll come back to
3:37 what this key is in a moment Pate thinks
3:39 about it for a few days but then decides
3:40 to go for it
3:42 The Alchemist meets him in a darkened
3:45 alley and Pate asks to see his face and
3:47 asks who he is
3:50 The Alchemist replies that he is no one
3:53 as if we need more of a clue and gives
3:56 pay to the coin Pate bites it to check
3:58 it's genuine like he's seen others do
4:01 and he Keels over apparently poisoned
4:03 it's a mirror of the assassination we
4:06 saw Arya do for the Faceless Men biting
4:09 a poisoned Coin pate's Heart seems to
4:10 give out
4:13 so someone calling themselves no one who
4:15 looks exactly like jaquin's last
4:17 appearance and kills people using a
4:20 classic faceless man trick it's Jack and
4:22 or more accurately The Faceless man
4:25 formally disguised as Jack and who can
4:27 tell what his real name is
4:29 jumping forward another few months at
4:32 the very end of a feast of crows Pate
4:35 reappears in a Sam chapter which should
4:36 immediately arouse our suspicions
4:39 because Pate seemed to die at the end of
4:42 the prologue all characters with POV
4:43 chapters in A Song of Ice and Fire
4:46 prologues or epilogues die it's a George
4:49 RR Martin thing so presumably jaqen has
4:52 now stolen pate's face anyway Sam has
4:54 just arrived in Old Town and he doesn't
4:56 know any of this background and is
4:58 ushered into the presence of archmaster
5:00 marwin a curious character who has
5:02 clearly attained a high status in the
5:04 Citadel but feels very differently to
5:08 them he cares about magic and glass
5:11 candles and prophecy and Dragons unlike
5:14 them in fact he's outright opposed to
5:16 them and disparaging of them he briefly
5:19 questioned Sam hearing that maester
5:21 Eamon wanted to go to see Dany and
5:22 advise her of the prophecy surrounding
5:25 her and then head straight off to the
5:27 docks to try to get a ship to meet Dany
5:30 for him self as Eamonn is now dead and
5:32 he wants to take his place there are
5:34 several interesting characters in
5:37 marwin's group Leo Tyrell alanas but
5:39 right at the end the reader's attention
5:43 is drawn to Pate who is also there him
5:46 introducing himself to Sam I'm Pate like
5:48 the pig boy is actually in the last
5:51 sentence of the entire book like Pate
5:53 had the first chapter of the entire book
5:55 was supposed to make the connection and
5:58 if we were in any doubt Paige seems
6:00 different to how he came across in that
6:02 prologue not in appearance but in character
6:03 character
6:06 he seems cleverer interjecting with
6:08 explanations and proactively tells Sam
6:11 that he is called Pate like the pig boy
6:14 Pate the pig boy is a well-known comedic
6:16 character from westerosey folklore a
6:18 comparison that we know from the
6:20 prologue that the real Pate hated and
6:22 yet now he is proactively embracing it
6:25 there are other Clues too whether he
6:27 calls Dragon Glass Dragon glass or
6:30 obsidian and so on the clear conclusion
6:33 from all of this is that The Alchemist
6:34 in the prologue was jackan
6:37 self-identifying as no one he killed
6:39 Pate using the faceless men's poisoned
6:41 coin technique that we've seen Arya use
6:44 took the key that Pate had and assumed
6:47 his appearance so the page that we see
6:49 at the end of A Feast for Crows is
6:52 jacken in Disguise and he's been in Old
6:54 Town for six months
6:58 so why take pate's appearance and why
7:01 does he want that key well the key is a
7:04 master key to the Citadel they are
7:06 seemingly held by Arch Masters only and
7:09 allow access to all areas of the Citadel
7:12 Pate is novice to archmaester woolgrave
7:15 who was old very old and seemingly
7:17 suffering from something like dementia
7:19 he perhaps alone among the archmasters
7:22 wouldn't notice it to go missing and
7:25 Pate clearly is bribable to steal it
7:28 taking on pate's appearance also allows
7:30 Jack and a reason to be in the more
7:32 secret parts of the Citadel if cornered
7:34 he can always claim to be on a task for
7:37 his master if all we'd had was that one
7:39 prologue then we would probably assume
7:41 that jaqen was there for an
7:49 several months later and discovered that
7:53 jacken is still there and is still
7:56 disguised as pate is he still casing The
7:58 Joint preparing for an assassination
8:00 even for the Faceless Men that seems
8:03 like a very long build up so presumably
8:06 he either completed his mission and has
8:08 found some reason to stay like he hung
8:10 around for a while earlier in the story
8:12 when he saw Aya's potential or he was
8:15 there for some other reason either way
8:18 it seems intentional for him to be in
8:20 marwin's company because if he were
8:22 trying to stay low profile he would have
8:24 just stuck to archmaster wolgrave's
8:27 rooms so who is marwin and why might
8:29 Jack and want to ingratiate himself with him
8:30 him
8:34 Merwin known as marwin the Mage is a bit
8:36 of a rogue maester and the people who
8:39 talk highly of him aren't necessarily
8:41 the people you would want to earlier in
8:44 the series long before we met marwin
8:46 qyburn said that he was the only person
8:48 in the Citadel to take his work
8:51 seriously even earlier than that Miri
8:54 mazdur said that she studied under him
8:56 we hear that he spent some time in a shy
8:58 which is quite a Sinister place and he
9:01 wrote a book called The Book of Lost Books
9:02 Books
9:05 in the book of Lost Books he claims that
9:07 he found something of the prophecy of
9:09 Denise the dreamer that led to the
9:12 targaryens abandoning old valyria before
9:14 the doom and perhaps even the precursor
9:16 of aegon the conqueror's prophecy that
9:17 we learn about in House of the dragon
9:20 and got to George RR Martin's Thumbs Up
9:23 The Song of Ice and Fire
9:26 marwin has also apparently got a glass
9:28 candle to work a magical communication
9:30 and observation device that had been
9:33 long thought to no longer work through
9:35 that he has been tracking Sam and
9:37 maester Eamonn heading south which
9:39 brings us to that last chapter of A
9:42 Feast for Crows maester Eamon was also a
9:44 student of Prophecy and was convinced
9:46 that Dany was the prince that was
9:50 promised now Eamonn is dead marwin takes
9:52 his place and heads off to tell Dany
9:54 about her prophetic role before he goes
9:57 though he finds a moment to advise Sam
10:04 you should stay and Forge your chain if
10:07 I were you I would do it quickly a time
10:09 will come when you'll be needed on the wall
10:10 wall
10:12 it seems like quite a throwaway phrase
10:15 but it shows what he thinks is important
10:18 Danny is important but so is the wall
10:22 Danny's job in his mind seems to be to
10:24 embrace her prophetic role and defeat
10:26 the others or something like that which
10:28 brings us back to jacken given what
10:32 marwin is about why is jackan getting
10:33 involved in that
10:36 well let's assume that jaqen wasn't
10:38 there for an assassination or perhaps he
10:40 was but then decided to stay because of
10:42 what he discovered there it's a
10:44 reasonable assumption jaqen has been
10:46 there for at least half a year and
10:48 perhaps as long as a whole year it's a
10:50 long time
10:52 so he's there on a mission for The
10:55 Faceless Men And as he has ended up
10:57 getting close to marwin it must be
11:00 connected in some way with what marwin
11:02 is up to telling Danny that she's the
11:04 prince that was promised and ultimately
11:06 defeating the others is there any way
11:08 the Faceless Men would be interested in
11:13 that well yes there is every way if you
11:14 think back to the start of this series
11:17 we looked at how The Faceless Men aren't
11:20 just the cool Assassin's Guild they are
11:23 a religion committed to the god of death
11:26 valley mugulis isn't just a cool phrase
11:30 it's a statement of faith all men must die
11:31 die
11:34 what if that religious order discovered
11:37 a threat to the whole world that spat in
11:39 the face of their core belief that all
11:41 men must die
11:45 by making zombies humans no longer die
11:48 they get raised again as whites
11:51 The Faceless Men will be absolutely and
11:55 fundamentally 100 opposed to the others
11:57 on theological grounds as well as the
12:00 obvious practical ones but perhaps Jack
12:01 and only discovered about all this while
12:03 in the Citadel his quarters with
12:06 wolgrave are right next to marwin's and
12:08 Pate seems to hang around socially with
12:12 wolgrave's novices so perhaps or perhaps
12:13 he was sent to Old Town in the first
12:16 place in order to learn more about this
12:18 threat that they've heard about getting
12:21 the key from Pate could just as easily
12:23 be about getting access to ancient
12:26 Scrolls of wisdom as it is about getting
12:29 access to an assassination Target if
12:31 anywhere has knowledge about how the
12:32 others were defeated the first time
12:35 around or how they could this time it's
12:37 Old Town just to pick a few random
12:40 examples of what we know or suspect is
12:42 there there's blood and fire the classic
12:45 text about dragons and unnatural history
12:48 septum baths seminal work on the same
12:51 subject tomes about the Stark Kings of
12:54 winter histories of valyria banned and
12:59 lost texts prophecies and much more that
13:01 is why jaqen is an Old Town or has
13:03 stayed in Old Town not for an
13:06 assassination but for knowledge there is
13:08 an existential threat looming for
13:11 Westeros and essos and a heresy in the
13:13 eyes of the priests of the many-faced
13:17 god of death all men must die and the
13:19 others threaten that natural Order of Things
13:21 Things
13:24 in the final video in this series I will
13:27 set out how all of this fits together in
13:30 the whole Faceless Men master plan
13:33 but what do you think why do you think
13:36 jaqen is an old town let me know in the
