0:02 the Bible says in Philippians 2:8 that
0:05 when Jesus came to be our savior he
0:09 humbled himself and became a man the
0:11 most powerful one in the universe coming
0:13 as the most helpless dependent one he
0:16 was not helpless in the sense that he
0:18 was God but in his Humanity he was
0:20 helpless I really believe it was
0:24 intended to show forth how we come to
0:27 God Jesus said as you heard me say
0:29 earlier that unless we become as little
0:30 children we cannot come into the kingdom
0:32 of God that doesn't mean we have to be
0:34 childish that means we have to become
0:37 like little children in our hearts
0:40 children have a wonderful humble way of
0:43 believing they know what faith is they
0:46 accept things without all of the stuff
0:49 that we often put into the equation the
0:52 humility Simplicity helplessness of a
0:55 child pictures how we come to God when
0:58 we are saved we say Lord God I need you
1:00 I can't get to heaven on my own I need
1:03 you to help me I need you to be my
1:06 savior a few years ago an international
1:09 research group set out to determine just
1:12 exactly what the average kid thought
1:14 about Christmas it should surprise
1:16 nobody to hear that their survey found
1:20 exactly 0% of kids hate
1:23 Christmas only 1% said they only enjoyed
1:26 a little and the other 99% really really
1:28 like the
1:30 holiday the survey found that the thing
1:32 the kids love the most about Christmas
1:34 isn't the
1:36 presents what they really like is not
1:42 school presents came in second followed
1:44 by spending time with the family
1:47 decorating the house and eating all that
1:49 candy I've been amazed uh over the years
1:53 to realize how focused on children
1:56 Christmas is for all of our families for
1:59 our churches Christmas is in many ways a
2:01 child's holiday and I have spent more
2:04 than a few moments just thinking about
2:07 it from the scripture Isaiah 9:6 says
2:11 For unto us a child is
2:13 born if you were
2:16 God would you have had as your purpose
2:18 to invade Humanity that
2:21 way I think I would have just inent
2:23 Christ as a full-grown mature adult who
2:25 could show up one day and become known
2:27 as the Son of God and get on with it but
2:30 the Bible says that our father Father in
2:32 Heaven chose to send the Lord of lords
2:34 and King of Kings into this world
2:37 through the birth canal of a woman God
2:41 sent his son to us as a child and when
2:42 you stop to think about it and you
2:45 sensitize your mind to that it shows up
2:47 everywhere in The Narrative of Christmas
2:49 you know Christmas is pretty much told
2:51 in three chapters of the Bible two in
2:54 the Book of Luke and one in Matthew
2:56 Matthew 1:18 now the birth of Jesus was
2:59 as follows after his mother Mary was
3:00 betro to Joseph before they came
3:04 together she was found with child of the
3:07 Holy Spirit Matthew 1:23 behold the
3:12 Virgin shall be with child Matthew 2:9
3:13 when the wise men heard the king they
3:15 departed and behold the star which they
3:17 had seen in the East went before them
3:19 till it came and stood over where the
3:23 young child was Matthew 2:1 and when the
3:25 wise men had come into the house they
3:28 saw the young child with Mary his mother
3:31 Matthew 23 13 an angel of the Lord
3:33 appeared to Joseph in a dream saying
3:35 arise take the young child and his
3:39 mother Matthew 2:14 when Joseph arose he
3:41 took the young child and his mother by
3:44 night and departed for Egypt now when
3:46 Herod was dead behold an angel of the
3:48 Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in
3:51 Egypt saying arise take the young child
3:53 and his mother and go to the land of
3:55 Israel for those who sought the young
3:57 child's life are dead and he arose and
3:59 took the young child and his mother and
4:01 came to the land of Israel the story of
4:04 Christmas is about a child and about a
4:07 young child interestingly enough one of
4:09 the reasons we know that the wise men
4:11 were not at the manger scene is because
4:13 when you see the word child at the
4:15 beginning of the story that's speaking
4:18 of Jesus as a baby but when you get to
4:20 the wise men part of the story it's not
4:21 child anymore it's young child they're
4:24 two different words the first word is a
4:26 word for a baby the second word is a
4:28 word for a toddler the Son of God came
4:31 into the world men and women as a child
4:33 to think that God in heaven would send
4:35 the Savior the world to be born as a
4:38 baby that our savior was sent to us as a
4:41 child and hyw writers have caught this
4:43 several of them one particularly that I
4:47 love is What Child Is This who laid to
4:50 rest on Mary's lap is sleeping whom
4:53 Angels greet with anthems sweet while
4:56 Shepherds watch are keeping this this is
4:59 Christ the King whom Shepherds guard and
5:02 Angels Sing haste haste to bring him L
5:06 the babe the son of Mary the hymnwriter
5:09 had this very same thought What Child Is
5:12 This this is Christ the King how do you
5:14 put those two together it's one of the
5:16 Mysteries of the Christmas
5:20 story so why did Jesus become a child
5:21 first of all I think he became a child
5:23 and he was sent here that way by his
5:27 father to identify with our Humanity the
5:30 author of Hebrews puts it this way
5:33 because God's children are human beings
5:37 made of Flesh and Blood the son also
5:40 became Flesh and
5:43 Blood Jesus came to us to be one of us
5:45 and he didn't show up as an adult he
5:48 came the way we came through birth to
5:52 identify with our Humanity Max Leo
5:54 imagines the moment that Jesus Took on
5:56 Flesh and Blood he writes he who was
5:58 larger than the universe became an
6:01 embryo and he who sustains the world
6:03 with a word chose to be dependent upon
6:07 the nourishment of a young girl God as a
6:11 fetus Holiness sleeping in a womb the
6:13 creator of life being
6:16 created God was given eyebrows and
6:19 elbows and two kidneys and a spleen he
6:21 stretched against the walls and floated
6:24 in the amniotic fluids of his mother he
6:27 came not as a flash of light or as an
6:29 unapproachable conqueror but one whose
6:32 first cries were heard by a peasant girl
6:36 and a sleepy Carpenter God coming as a
6:39 child to be one of us it's very
6:41 interesting to me that if you examine
6:43 what it was like to be a child when
6:46 Jesus was born it wasn't a very good
6:48 time for children children were not
6:51 welcome they were regarded as a burden
6:53 they were vexing they were Troublesome
6:56 Christ came to identify himself with the
6:58 children of that day and the children of
7:00 our day and it's not not an accident
7:02 that the vast majority of the people who
7:04 come to know Christ in our culture today
7:06 they come to know him when they're
7:09 children did you know that 75% of the
7:11 people who become Christians do so
7:14 before the age of 18 the message of the
7:16 Gospel is accepted and understood in the
7:18 heart of a child and as you follow the
7:20 lord Jesus through his Earthly Ministry
7:22 you will discover that children played A
7:25 Very Special Part in his Earthly journey
7:27 in Matthew 18 we read that Jesus called
7:30 a little child to him and set him in the
7:32 midst of them and he said assuredly I
7:35 say to you unless you are converted and
7:37 become as Little Children You Will by no
7:39 means enter the Kingdom of Heaven
7:42 therefore whoever humbles himself as
7:44 this little child is the greatest in the
7:46 Kingdom of Heaven whoever receives one
7:49 little child like this in my name receives
7:50 receives
7:53 me and Matthew 19 adds then little
7:55 children were brought to him that he
7:58 might put his hands on them and pray but
8:00 the disciples rebuked them and Jesus
8:03 said no let the little children come to
8:06 me and do not forbid them for of such is
8:10 the Kingdom of Heaven Jesus came as a
8:14 child into Humanity so that we would
8:16 understand there is no one who cannot
8:20 come to Jesus Children come to Jesus I
8:22 know children who got saved in the third
8:25 or fourth year on this Earth and went on
8:26 to live for Christ every day for the
8:28 rest of their life when you put Jesus in
8:31 your hard especially at the beginning of
8:33 your existence on this Earth you set
8:35 yourself on a journey that's high above
8:37 any other Journey you could choose
8:40 choose Jesus and make sure your children
8:42 know what it means to know Jesus he came
8:46 as a child so that every child would
8:49 know him and then he came not only to
8:51 identify with our Humanity he came to
8:54 illustrate humility if you've ever held
8:57 a newborn in your hands you know there's
8:58 nothing that pictures the helplessness
9:01 and the dependence of life more than
9:03 that and the Bible says that this is the
9:07 way Jesus came he came as a baby to
9:09 illustrate that till we become like that
9:12 in our spiritual being we can't be saved
9:14 we have to Humble ourselves it's one of
9:15 the hardest things about becoming a
9:17 Christian for so many people because so
9:19 many people want to think if it has to
9:20 be it's up to me and they tell you about
9:22 all the things they've done and all the
9:23 things they've accomplished but Jesus
9:26 says no you have to come in the spirit
9:29 of humility as a child and a knowled your
9:30 your
9:33 helplessness unless someone outside of
9:35 yourself reaches down to take hold of
9:37 your life that's what God does when we
9:40 come and accept his son as our savior
9:43 the Bible says in Philippians 2:8 that
9:45 when Jesus came to be our savior he
9:50 humbled himself and became a man the
9:52 most powerful one in the universe coming
9:54 as the most helpless dependent one he
9:56 was not helpless in the sense that he
9:59 was God but in his Humanity he was
10:01 helpless I really believe it was
10:05 intended to show forth how we come to
10:08 God Jesus said as you heard me say
10:10 earlier that unless we become as little
10:11 children we cannot come into the kingdom
10:13 of God that doesn't mean we have to be
10:15 childish that means we have to become
10:18 like little children in our hearts
10:21 children have a wonderful humble way of
10:24 believing they know what faith is they
10:27 accept things without all of the stuff
10:30 that we often put into the equation the
10:33 humility Simplicity helplessness of a
10:36 child pictures how we come to God when
10:38 we are saved we say Lord God I need you
10:41 I can't get to heaven on my own I need
10:43 you to help me I need you to be my
10:46 savior the reason that he came was to
10:50 show us his humility and to help us
10:52 understand unless we humble ourselves we
10:55 cannot go to heaven I've had more than
10:57 one occasion when I have had to talk to
10:59 men especially about their faith and
11:01 often times when you talk to men about
11:02 their faith what they want to do is tell
11:05 you about their accomplishments we all
11:07 have to have our list of accomplishments
11:09 men kind of live on that and I'm all for
11:11 that I think we should accomplish things
11:13 in our lives but your accomplishments
11:15 can't get you to heaven you have to be
11:17 willing to put all that aside and say in
11:20 this realm in this spiritual realm I
11:24 need God and I can't help myself and
11:26 when you come that way God he grabs hold
11:27 of you like you wouldn't believe and
11:29 lifts you up to to the place where you
11:34 want to be so why did Jesus become a
11:36 child secondly what kind of child was
11:38 Jesus you know there's not a lot of
11:40 information in the Bible about Jesus
11:42 from the time of his birth to his
11:45 adulthood a couple of incidents here and
11:47 there but we can find out about what
11:49 kind of child he was by listening to a
11:51 prophet from the Old Testament who gave
11:53 us the prophecy concerning the Child
11:58 Jesus for unto us a child is born and
12:00 his name will be called wonderful
12:02 counselor Mighty God Everlasting father
12:05 and Prince of Peace let's just take
12:08 those words as words of description of
12:11 the Child Jesus first of all the Bible
12:14 says he was wonderful I love that
12:17 because in the original text the word
12:20 isn't wonderful the word is Wonder Jesus
12:24 was the Wonder Boy he was a Wonder Boy
12:26 the Bible says everything about him was
12:29 a wonder it means that he was absolutely
12:31 incomprehensible even as we have for
12:34 years and years tried to figure out ways
12:36 to explain it to make it easier to
12:39 comprehend when Paul wrote to Timothy he
12:41 said great is the mystery of godliness
12:44 God manifest In the Flesh he was
12:46 wonderful in his birth because there was
12:48 no other human being ever born like he
12:51 was God was his father he was conceived
12:53 of the Holy Spirit and he was the only
12:57 begotten Son of God a beautiful star led
12:59 the wise men to his crib Angels filled
13:01 the sky on the night when he was born
13:04 humble Shepherds and learned Scholars
13:06 worshiped him at his lowly manger he was
13:09 wonderful in his birth the manger of
13:12 Bethlehem is exalted in the thoughts and
13:14 affections of the world wherever the
13:17 story is told it remains just think of
13:21 the Wonder of it all Christmas is Jesus
13:24 enduring a human birth so that we could
13:27 have a spiritual birth Christmas is
13:30 Jesus occupying a stable so that one day
13:31 we could occupy a
13:34 mansion Christmas is Jesus having an
13:36 Earthly mother so that we might have a Heavenly
13:38 Heavenly
13:40 Father Christmas is Jesus becoming a
13:43 slave so that we could be set free and
13:46 Christmas is Jesus becoming poor so that
13:49 we might be rich yes what kind of a boy
13:51 was Jesus he was a Wonder Boy everything
13:53 about him was a wonder and then the
13:56 Bible says he was counselor and the word
13:59 counselor is a word which means to
14:01 advise or direct or to guide and there
14:04 is a special special story in the New
14:07 Testament that illustrates this one of
14:08 the stories that I've always loved about
14:10 Jesus is the story when he was taken to
14:13 the temple as a young child and then his
14:15 parents forgot him there I've always
14:17 loved that because I have done that to my
14:19 my
14:22 children on more than one
14:24 occasion and my parents did it to me
14:26 it's an emotional thing you might not
14:29 ever get over if it happens very often
14:31 but listen to me Jesus went to the
14:34 temple and 3 Days Later his parents
14:36 hadn't caught up with him yet and
14:38 finding the scripture says they went
14:40 back to find him and they looked all
14:41 around and couldn't find him and he
14:43 wasn't in the normal places where
14:45 children would be and so they went into
14:47 the temple proper and let me show you
14:49 the verses that describe what happened
14:52 this is right out of the Book of Luke
14:55 now so it was that after 3 days I love
14:57 that after 3 days they found him in the
14:59 temple sitting in the midst of the
15:02 teachers both listening to them and
15:04 asking them questions and all who heard
15:07 him were astonished at his understanding
15:08 and his
15:11 answers why you shouldn't be astonished
15:12 at that he's the wonderful counselor
15:15 that's what the Bible says he's the
15:18 counselor and then the Bible adds this
15:19 third one and this might be the most
15:21 overwhelming one to all of us the Bible
15:25 says Mighty God his name Shall be Called
15:28 wonderful counselor Mighty God imag
15:30 imagine giving name to your child and
15:32 then sending out the birth announcement
15:34 welcome baby Mighty
15:38 God at Christmas time we often speak of
15:40 Jesus as the sweet baby Jesus and that
15:43 he was we love that part of the story he
15:46 was that we share it widely when Christ
15:48 was born in Bethlehem the Jewish nation
15:52 was not interested in a sweet baby Jesus
15:53 they wanted a deliverer they wanted
15:55 someone to sit on the throne of David
15:57 and become their King and it is
15:58 interesting that one of the names that
16:01 Isaiah gave to Jesus before his birth
16:04 was El Gore the strong one the god of
16:07 strength the Mighty God now a lot of
16:09 those who try to say that Jesus was not
16:11 God struggle with this because this
16:14 tells us who Jesus was he was God Bible
16:15 according to Isaiah says he was the
16:18 Mighty God who was that Christ child
16:22 born in Bethlehem that was God in a body
16:24 it was God in the manger there is a line
16:27 in Mary did you know the great song that
16:29 was written not so long ago I love this
16:32 phrase every time I hear this song and
16:34 hear this particular phrase my heart
16:36 kind of jumps here's the phrase and when
16:39 you kiss your little baby you have
16:41 kissed the face of
16:43 God oh my
16:46 goodness friends if we don't understand
16:47 this and especially at this season of
16:49 the year if we don't nail this Doctrine
16:51 down Christmas is nothing more than a
16:53 wonderful pageant that brings people
16:55 together at the end of the year but if
16:58 it is true that the Mighty God is in the
17:01 manger then he would grow up to manhood
17:03 live a sinless life ultimately go to a
17:06 cross and hang there dying between two
17:09 thieves this is God on the cross paying
17:11 the penalty for the sin of the world
17:14 this is not just a man if God is Not In
17:16 Christ then his death on the cross is no
17:18 more meaningful than if I were to die on
17:20 the cross for you you see if someone
17:21 were to come to me and say hey your
17:24 friend committed a terrible crime he's
17:26 going to die for the crime but you have
17:28 the right to die in his place if I died
17:29 in his place you know what my Dying Days
17:32 Are Over I can't die for anybody else
17:35 but Jesus died for the whole world Jesus
17:37 was God and because he was God he was
17:40 infinite and his death was infinite
17:42 enough so that it covered the death of
17:44 all who would put their trust in him
17:47 including you and me the Bible says the
17:49 wages of sin are death but that
17:52 payment's been made almighty God made
17:53 that payment in the person of his son
17:55 Jesus Christ and that's what's so
17:58 wonderful about knowing Jesus it's the
18:00 whole wonderful truth of our forgiveness
18:02 because God loves us so much he sent his
18:05 own son to pay the penalty that we
18:07 deserve how can it be said that the one
18:09 who was born in the manger and hung on
18:11 the cross could pay the penalty for the
18:13 sin of the world the only way that can
18:15 be true is if the one who was born in
18:19 the manger was El Gabor the Mighty God
18:22 and he was that's why we Rejoice at
18:23 Christmas if we know what we're
18:27 rejoicing about the child was God did
18:29 those two things seem hard to put
18:31 together they always have been but never
18:33 forget it the child was God would you
18:36 say that with me out loud the child was
18:38 God that's the most important thing you
18:40 can remember about
18:42 Christmas and then the Bible says Everlasting
18:43 Everlasting
18:46 father he is wonderful he's the
18:49 counselor this is who the child was
18:50 Everlasting father now this is
18:52 stretching your mind I know a great deal
18:54 but here we have the child being the
18:57 father how does that work well it was a
18:59 Troublesome thing all all through Jesus
19:01 life on one occasion he got into an
19:02 argument with some
19:04 theologians he said to one of those who
19:07 were interrogating him one day most
19:09 assuredly I say to you before Abraham
19:13 was I am in other words before Abraham
19:17 ever lived I was living he was the child
19:18 but the Bible says he was the father of
19:21 Eternity which means he wasn't the
19:23 father in the sense of being God he was
19:27 the ultimate source of Eternity almighty
19:29 God through Jesus Christ created us for
19:32 eternity and the father of Eternity is
19:35 Jesus Christ that means when you trust
19:37 Jesus Christ as your savior eternity is
19:39 a part of the package you get to live
19:43 forever with him in heaven please don't
19:45 be misguided in the Christmas season
19:47 that Jesus Christ began at
19:49 Bethlehem he did not begin at Bethlehem
19:52 he came into the flesh at Bethlehem
19:54 there's never been a time when Jesus was
19:56 not and there never will be a time when
19:59 he ceases to be he he is the Eternal Son
20:02 of God he has lived forever and will
20:05 live forever but for a moment of time he
20:08 entered this world to become one of us
20:10 to identify with us so that he could be
20:13 our representative on the cross and pay
20:16 the penalty which we deserve we rejoice
20:18 in this day that the Christ who was born
20:22 in Bethlehem is elabore the Everlasting
20:24 father and then here's the one we love
20:28 the most the fifth name given by Isaiah
20:32 for the child he is the Prince of Peace
20:35 oh how I love that our world has known
20:36 so little peace in fact I have some
20:39 diagrams in my study showing how many
20:41 years there have been where there has
20:43 been no war and it's almost none even
20:46 now as We Gather here war is breaking
20:48 out in different places some of it we
20:51 see some of it we don't the Hebrew word
20:53 for peace here is a word we all know
20:55 it's probably the only Hebrew word most
20:57 of us know it's the word
20:59 shalom if you were a Hebrew growing up
21:02 in Jewish culture that was the word high
21:03 you'd see somebody in the street you'd
21:07 say shalom peace all the peace they long
21:09 for in the Old Testament never happened
21:11 all the peace they long for in the New
21:13 Testament before Christ it didn't happen
21:16 either and then one day to a group of
21:19 shepherds peace was announced listen to
21:21 this and suddenly there was with the
21:23 angel a multitude of the Heavenly hosts
21:25 praising God and saying glory to God in
21:30 the highest and on Earth peace Good Will
21:34 toward men peace was born at Bethlehem
21:36 in the person of Jesus Christ peace was
21:39 wrapped up in that child because he was
21:42 human and divine because he was God and
21:44 man he could reach up one hand and take
21:46 hold of the father reach down another
21:48 hand and take hold of us and bring us
21:50 together at the Nexus of the Cross and
21:53 create peace between us who were at
21:55 enmity with one another we were
21:57 violating his standards and there was no
21:59 way we could make make peace with that
22:02 one of the antonyms of Peace today that
22:06 is so much felt Among Us is
22:09 anxiety peace is the opposite of anxiety
22:11 anxiety is running wild in our world
22:14 because of inflation because of War
22:16 because of covid because of all the
22:18 thing anxiety is pretty much at the top
22:20 of the list for counselors but did you
22:22 know the Bible says that when you take
22:24 Jesus Christ into your life you take
22:26 into your life the prince of peace and
22:29 he can give you peace peace that will
22:32 overcome the anxiety of your life when
22:36 you know all is well with God and he is
22:38 in heaven and Heaven
22:41 rules you can walk each day in the midst
22:43 of the craziness in which we live today
22:46 and be at peace with yourself and be at
22:49 peace with God once again Isaiah the
22:52 prophet said it this way he was wounded
22:55 for our transgressions he was bruised
22:57 for our iniquities and the chastisement
22:59 for for our
23:03 peace was on him Jesus is the Prince of
23:07 Peace this week I watched a video of
23:09 Walter kronite reading one of the most
23:12 remarkable Christmas stories you see
23:14 this story is about something that
23:18 happened during a time of War World War
23:20 I ravaged the continent leaving
23:23 destruction and debris in its wake but
23:24 from the midst of the dark conflict
23:27 comes the story of the Christmas Truce
23:28 of 19
23:31 194 the Western Front only a few months
23:34 into the war was a deplorable scene of
23:37 Devastation almost as to give the comant
23:39 one day to Breathe Again a truth was
23:42 called from Christmas Eve through
23:45 Christmas day no fighting no war from
23:48 Christmas Eve through Christmas day as
23:49 Darkness settled over the front like a
23:52 blanket the sound of exploding shells
23:54 and gunfire
23:57 faded faint carols in French or English
23:59 voes voices on one side and in German
24:02 voices on the other Rose to fill the
24:05 Silence of the night can you imagine by
24:07 morning soldiers at first hesitantly
24:10 began filing out of the maze of trenches
24:13 into the dreaded and part soil of No
24:17 Man's Land there was more singing gifts
24:20 were exchanged between the soldiers they
24:22 were shooting at a few moments ago and
24:25 we're now shaking hands with and
24:28 conversing with for one brief but
24:31 entirely remarkable day there was peace
24:33 on Earth events like the Christmas
24:36 truths are worth celebrating and
24:40 Christmas itself can do that for a war
24:42 but celebrating Christmas can't do for
24:46 you what you need you have to celebrate
24:48 the Christ of Christmas you have to get
24:51 past the celebration to the person you
24:54 have to take Christ into your life and
24:56 accept him as your lord and savior you
24:58 have to believe the story that God so
25:00 loved the world that he gave his only
25:02 begotten son that whosoever that
25:04 includes all of us will put our trust in
25:07 him we won't perish but have everlasting
25:09 life have you done that have you
25:11 actually asked Jesus Christ to be your
25:13 savior are you willing to do that are
25:15 you willing to look over your life and
25:19 realize someone is missing that someone
25:21 is the Lord if you're not a Christian if
25:23 you've never invited Christ into your
25:26 life you can't know this peace that he
25:30 came to bring he wants to be your wonder
25:33 your counselor your Mighty God your
25:35 Everlasting father most of all he wants
25:39 to be your Prince of Peace he comes when
25:42 you invite him into your [Music]
