every team experiences challenges from
time to time these challenges might come
in the form of different communication
Styles personalities opinions or priorities
priorities
but they don't need to sync your project
many of us don't realize that
communication lies at the heart of these
challenges so if we improve our
communication we can improve the
situation in this video we'll share how
to use strong communication skills for
handling five of the most common
challenges the first and perhaps most
common workplace challenge is different
communication styles in other words two
people may share receive and process
information differently that can lead to
misunderstandings conflict and even mistakes
mistakes
if it feels like you and a boss or
co-worker are speaking a different
language try changing your communication
style to meet theirs do they focus on
action items and goal setting do they
like to know the facts are they people
oriented is it important that they
understand the big picture
don't let differences in communication
Styles become a pain point in
collaboration identify the other party's
communication style and mirror it your
message can stay the same just change
how you package it
the next workplace challenge is
collaborating with difficult co-workers
a lazy competitive or manipulative
co-worker can hinder your success
especially if you're working on a
project together
be direct and make yourself clear when
working with a difficult co-worker
establish boundaries communicate
expectations clearly and discuss
challenges with your co-worker directly
when needed you can use I statements to
describe your interpretation of an event
or problem
you might also ask for your co-workers
input and help in solving it for example
you might say I notice that you change
the project plan but I don't remember
receiving an update about it did I miss
it I'd love your help getting up to
speed and making sure that we're both
moving in the same direction
you can't always control your co-workers
bad behavior but you can control how you
respond to it don't let a difficult
co-worker bring you down lead by example
and remain professional in your
interactions with them
next is getting along with the difficult boss
boss
while your boss might suffer from a case
of micromanagement unrealistic expectations
expectations
disorganization or hyper criticism
remember that there's always something
you can learn from her
your boss didn't attain her position by
sheer luck help your boss focus on her
strengths by offering your support in
her areas of weakness
if your biggest complaint is your boss's
disorganization offer to take a project
plan or schedule offer plate
don't hesitate to communicate your needs
to your boss directly ask for what you
need or would like changed but also
explain why it would help you better
deliver on your boss's goals
as a general rule of thumb Focus your
efforts on improving your relationship
with your boss rather than retaliating
or complaining about her
fourth is navigating disagreements it's
okay for people to have different
perspectives the challenge is not the
disagreement the real challenge is how
to navigate disagreements constructively
and reach a level of consensus that
allows a project to move forward
to navigate disagreements more
effectively try turning doubts or
disagreements into questions you might
say I like the idea but I'm wondering
what resources would be involved in
executing it
you might also ask others to expand on
an idea share their reasoning or provide clarification
