0:01 Hey, this is Russell. Welcome back to
0:02 the vault. Today I'm going to show you
0:05 guys some insanely cool stuff from one
0:07 of the pioneers of this industry that
0:09 almost nobody has ever heard of before.
0:11 Uh yet he was one who inspired and
0:13 actually helped so many of the top
0:14 people. In fact, including Napoleon
0:16 Hill. I got a testimonial from Napoleon
0:18 Hill about the course right here that
0:20 we're going to be diving deep into. This
0:21 is uh the same course, three different
0:23 publications. The first one, this is the
0:25 first edition master's key system. I
0:29 spent exactly $1,324.95
0:31 on the first edition master key systems,
0:34 which is pretty cool. But then um before
0:36 the master key system was a book set, it
0:37 was a home study course. This is an
0:39 original copy of the home study course.
0:41 What they would do is every single month
0:42 they would uh ship it out. You'd go
0:43 through the lesson, you'd fill it out,
0:45 you send it back in, and uh and then you
0:47 get the next lesson. And so it's almost
0:49 impossible to find because nobody has
0:50 all the lessons. You would send you
0:51 would fill it out, send it in, and they
0:52 send you the next one. So you'd only
0:54 have the last lesson. So, I found two
0:56 complete sets. This one right here I was
0:57 able to buy from one of our members at
0:59 Secrets of Success. One of our members
1:01 had it. Spent $8,000 to buy this
1:03 edition. And then this is one other
1:04 edition I found, which is the most
1:06 pristine copy. It looks like it's brand
1:09 new, but is this was published in 1916.
1:12 And I spent $100,000 to acquire this
1:14 version of the entire uh home study
1:17 course. So, these are all of the master
1:19 key systems written by Charles Hannel,
1:20 who's one of my favorite authors from
1:22 the new thought movement. In a minute,
1:23 I'm going to show you guys my favorite
1:25 lesson I learned from the master key
1:26 system, which is one of the coolest
1:27 things ever. And I'm also going to show
1:30 you Napoleon Hill's actual testimonial
1:31 that he sent to Charles Handle, which is
1:32 inside of some of these books. But
1:34 before I do, I want to tell a little bit
1:35 of the story because you may have heard
1:36 this before. If you have heard of Master
1:37 Key system, there's some big controversy
1:39 behind it. Okay. So, Charles Handle
1:41 launched the the home study version of
1:44 the Master Key systems in 1912. And then
1:45 four years later, we came out with the
1:46 first edition book and it ran for a long
1:48 time. I said it changed so many people's
1:51 lives. from 1933 to 2003 for 70 years it
1:53 was out of print and it disappeared off
1:54 the face of the planet for the most part
1:56 other than old copies that people were
1:57 sharing and handing around but it wasn't
1:59 in print for that time and so because of
2:00 there all these big controversies in
2:01 fact if you Google you'll see there's
2:03 people that talked about how the church
2:04 banned this and that's why it
2:06 disappeared like the the churches not
2:07 did not want people finding out about
2:09 this there's other stories and folklore
2:11 that there were business entities who
2:12 did not want these the secrets of the
2:14 master key system falling into their
2:15 competitor's hands and there's all these
2:16 different things about it being banned
2:18 and literally taken offline line and we
2:20 have no idea which of those stories are
2:22 true or not true but we do know it was
2:25 off print for 70 years until 2003 is
2:27 when somebody found it found it in the
2:28 public domain and started reprinting it
2:29 and bringing it back forward and in the
2:31 last little while there's a lot of
2:32 really big celebrities like one good
2:34 example is Terry Cruz who literally
2:35 quotes that his success came from
2:37 Charles Handle in the master key system
2:39 so it's kind of a cool thing that was
2:40 disappeared for so long that now is back
2:42 in our world like we can read it we can
2:43 study it and it brings back some really
2:45 cool philosophies that I think have been
2:48 lost to lost to time oh and Um, I'm
2:49 going to show you actually the ads of
2:50 how Charles Har used to sell this in
2:52 some of these magazines like Nautles.
2:53 I'll show you that here at the end. I
2:54 think my favorite principle that came
2:56 from the whole master key systems. Okay,
2:58 the master key system is broken up into
3:00 24 lessons, right? So each week you get
3:02 a lesson, ship it back and all of them
3:03 like they compound and they build on
3:05 each other. But the very last lesson in
3:07 the series is my favorite. Uh the title
3:10 of it is that you are the architect of
3:12 your own destiny, right? And he talks
3:14 about here how so many people they they
3:16 look at the circumstances of life and
3:17 they think like this is this is what God
3:18 gave me. This is the life I have. This
3:19 is my family. This is where I was
3:20 growing up. Like like they think that
3:22 that is their life. What he's trying to
3:23 show everyone is like you're literally
3:25 the architect. You can design whatever
3:26 it is you want. Like you can design if
3:27 you want to be rich, you want to be
3:28 poor, you want to be an athlete, you
3:30 have the ability to architect it. And
3:32 the way you do that, it all comes back
3:34 to your thoughts. Like learning how to
3:35 control your thoughts and how to
3:36 structure things. He said that your
3:38 thoughts create your environment, right?
3:39 Right? A lot of times we think that the
3:41 environment we're in is the environment
3:43 we're stuck in. You see people who are
3:44 grown up in poverty and come and become
3:46 like these, you know, amazing
3:48 influencers or people like so it's not
3:49 the environment you're in. It's the
3:51 thoughts that create the environment
3:52 that you're locked in, you know? And so
3:53 what happens a lot of times people are
3:55 in a bad environment because that they
3:56 hear bad thoughts all the time. It's
3:57 going through their head. So they locks
3:59 themselves in this prison that's not
4:00 real, right? This prisons that they're
4:02 locking themselves are aren't actually
4:03 real. And when you learn that, you're
4:04 like realizing the environment I'm in is
4:06 all tied to my thoughts and what's
4:07 happening here. Then you can break away
4:08 and you say, "Okay, how do I want to
4:10 architect my life? What do I want to
4:12 believe? What do I need to do to be
4:13 successful? What are other people who
4:15 are successful? What are they doing? And
4:16 how do I tap into that?" And that's one
4:18 of my favorite lessons from the entire
4:20 master key system is understanding that
4:21 and really believing that you are the
4:22 architect of your life. If you are the
4:24 architect, you know, what does an
4:25 architect do? It has a vision for like
4:26 this is what the building's going to
4:28 look like. Okay, based on that, you
4:28 know, I'm going to design. I'm going to
4:30 map it out. You start kind of figuring
4:31 those things out. Like that's what you
4:32 can do as well is come back and say
4:34 what's the life that you want, right?
4:35 Who already has the thing that you
4:36 desire? like what does that look like?
4:38 And you can find people who've already
4:40 figured it out, right? People have
4:41 already built the house uh that you're
4:43 trying to build and you look at that and
4:44 from there you can reverse engineer
4:46 architect your life. Tony Robbins calls
4:47 this modeling. Like if you want to be
4:48 successful, all you got to do is find
4:50 somebody who's already successful and
4:51 model them, right? And that's what
4:53 architecting is all about is finding
4:55 those things, not defaulting to like
4:56 here's the environment that I'm born and
4:57 therefore I will be this way forever.
4:59 It's like no, no, my environment is
5:00 based on my thoughts. Let me change my
5:01 thoughts so I can change my environment.
5:03 I can change my life. The other really
5:04 interesting thing he talks about in the
5:06 master key system, he calls it the
5:08 universal mind. Napoleon Hill used to
5:09 call it infinite intelligence, right?
5:11 But basically it's God. It's the
5:12 universe. It's this thing. And he talks
5:14 about he's like all of us are tapped
5:15 into that, right? I believe Charles
5:17 Han's beliefs. A lot of people from the
5:18 early thought movement, they talk about
5:19 we have our conscious mind and our
5:21 subconscious. And their subconscious
5:22 mind is what they believe is is attached
5:24 to infinite intelligence. What he calls
5:25 the universal mind, right? It's the mind
5:27 of of God across everything. And we're
5:28 all tapped into that. And so it's
5:30 interesting you think about for most of
5:32 us like if we want to consciously figure
5:33 something out. You've got your five
5:35 senses. You can see something, you can
5:37 smell something, you can taste
5:37 something, you can hear something, you
5:39 can feel something. Like those are our
5:40 five senses. We can get things from
5:42 those things, right? From the from the
5:43 five senses. I can go read a book, I can
5:44 watch a video, I can listen to
5:45 something. But if I can't get it from
5:47 those five senses, it's not in my brain.
5:48 So how does our brain get all the other
5:50 ideas and thoughts and everything? And
5:52 their belief and his belief specifically
5:54 is that there's this one universal mind,
5:55 our subconscious mind, that we're all
5:57 attached into the infinite. We're all
5:58 attached to God. And so when we
6:00 understand that, it's like, okay, I'm
6:02 one with God. Like if I will sit and I
6:03 will concentrate. He talks about
6:04 concentrated thought. Like you want to
6:06 have concentrated thought on something.
6:07 It's not you're like you're going to
6:08 read and find it. You're you're
6:09 concentrating your thought so your
6:11 subconscious mind so God can bring you
6:12 the answers and hand it to you on a
6:14 silver platter. And it's true because
6:15 think about how many of us in our life
6:17 when we're trying to consciously figure
6:18 out the problem to something, we can't
6:20 figure it out. We can't solve it. We're
6:20 studying. We're learning. We're checking
6:23 chat chat GBT. We can't figure it out.
6:24 And then you take a break and you go to
6:25 the bathroom or you jump in the shower
6:26 and you're showering and 5 seconds later
6:28 the answer pops into your mind. Like
6:29 what just happened? Like the answers
6:30 popped in my head. Like where'd that
6:32 come from? Okay. Well, it came from
6:34 again what he calls the universal mind.
6:35 It's your subconscious mind that's
6:37 attached to God. He's the one who can
6:38 give you these ideas that are external
6:40 from the things that we're getting from
6:42 our five senses. And Napoleon Hill
6:43 again, he calls it the sixth sense. Like
6:44 you're tapping into the six sense that
6:46 isn't the things that have been put into
6:48 your brain. These are things that are
6:49 delivered to you when you need them,
6:51 when you're willing to tap into it. I
6:52 know it's kind of woowoo for some of you
6:54 guys out there, but you can't deny that
6:55 these things happen to you where you get
6:56 an idea that that didn't come from
6:57 anywhere. That didn't come from me.
6:59 Sometimes I'm on stage speaking in a
7:01 seminar with 5,000 people and something
7:03 shows up. I start talking, it turns out
7:04 to be the thing that people need. I'm
7:06 like, I don't where did that come from?
7:07 This is not something I studied or I
7:09 read or I had notes on, it just
7:11 magically shows up. And the way that
7:13 Charles Han inside the master key
7:14 systems explains it is through the
7:17 universal mind. It's interesting as I've
7:18 been studying the new thought movement,
7:19 it's really fascinating. There's
7:21 different shades of it, right? And it
7:22 what I find most interesting is like
7:24 when people started so the new thought
7:25 movement happened between 1880 and like
7:27 1920, right? And there's all these
7:28 people who started realizing like I can
7:30 think and I can change my life. I can
7:31 think and grow rich. I can think and
7:33 change my circumstance. I can think and
7:34 change my environment, right? And
7:35 they're freaking out about this. And
7:37 then over here in America, you had this
7:38 uh you know the beginning of like
7:40 Christianity really coming and growing.
7:42 And a lot of times the Christians
7:43 believe that this stuff was evil and
7:45 vice versa. And uh but there was this
7:47 time where in between these two like the
7:48 Christian community and new thought
7:50 movement kind of bumped into each other
7:51 and it's fascinating because you read a
7:53 lot of the authors during this time who
7:54 were trying to reconcile these two
7:55 things like wait a minute uh I believe
7:56 in God and Christ but these things are
7:57 happening like how does this work and
7:59 like is this coming from God is it not
8:00 coming from God and there's this
8:02 crossover that happens in the middle and
8:03 so for me like I I really enjoy the
8:05 crossover where it's like the personal
8:07 development stuff where you're focusing
8:09 on thinking in you know your mindset but
8:10 I believe it's coming from God and I'm
8:12 obviously a Christian so I believe in
8:13 that it's coming from Christ and those
8:15 things and But then inside there there's
8:16 there's this whole other section which
8:18 is more of the metaphysical which then
8:20 transitions more to you know what we
8:21 would affectionately call more woowoo
8:23 stuff. Um I like studying those things
8:25 but like sometimes it goes deeper than
8:27 I'm willing to believe. And I think
8:29 everyone for all of us it's it's our
8:30 shot to figure out like what are we
8:31 actually going to believe or not believe
8:32 because it goes deep into like
8:35 telekinesis and like all sort like all
8:37 sorts of different levels here inside of
8:38 people's beliefs and thoughts. For me, I
8:40 default a lot more towards, you know,
8:41 understanding the the conscious and
8:44 subconscious mind, using thoughts to uh
8:46 rewire our subconscious mind. And I
8:47 believe God is definitely tied into and
8:48 part of the whole thing, but I don't
8:51 tend to go all the way to the the purely
8:53 metaphysical side. I think for me, as I
8:54 get closer to those things, I get more
8:55 and more uncomfortable. I'd rather stay
8:57 closer um on the spiritual side. So,
8:58 that's kind of me personally where where
9:00 things fall as I'm studying a lot of the
9:02 things from the new thought movement.
9:03 Okay. So, what's cool about Charles
9:05 Hanel is uh he was out there, he wrote
9:07 this and he wanted to promote it like
9:08 crazy. And they said that um I think
9:10 over the first three or four years he
9:12 sold 200,000 copies of the actual Master
9:13 Key systems book set. Like think about
9:15 that. Most people don't sell like 20
9:16 copies of their book and they got
9:18 Facebook, Instagram, you all the
9:19 different tools, right? He's selling
9:20 this back way back in the day. So, like
9:21 how in the world did he sell 200,000
9:23 copies of this? Now, in the thought
9:24 movement, there are a lot of different
9:25 magazines that kind of popped up, but
9:27 there's one specifically, and we'll
9:29 probably go deep into this woman and her
9:30 writings in the future. But name is
9:31 Elizabeth Town, and she had a magazine
9:34 called The Nautilus. And this this
9:35 became like literally like the
9:37 distribution channel of all of this kind
9:39 of work, these books, these magazine,
9:40 all these kind of things back in the
9:43 day. The Nautilus magazine was I mean,
9:44 her subscribership was huge. And so, um,
9:46 I've been collecting as many editions of
9:48 this all the way back to the late 1800s,
9:50 all the way through like 1950, 1960,
9:52 this magazine's out there. And what's
9:53 interesting is you read these uh you see
9:55 that this was the the core way that
9:57 people got their message out back then.
9:58 And so they would come and so Charles
10:00 Hann would come to Elizabeth Town and
10:02 say, "Hey, I want to write a free
10:03 article for your magazine." So he'd
10:04 write a free article talking about
10:05 Master Key system. Then he's like, "I
10:07 want to buy an ad in here talking about
10:08 Master Key system." Okay? You see
10:10 Napoleon Hill, same thing. Napole Hill
10:11 would write articles about Thinking and
10:13 Growing Rich and then he would link in
10:15 the in the bio back to buy Think and
10:16 Grow Rich. And then he would pay for ads
10:18 about Think and Grow Rich inside of
10:19 here. So this magazine was the
10:21 distribution channel. This was what TV
10:22 was in the 80s. How to get your message
10:24 out, right? This is what the internet is
10:25 today to get your message out was
10:26 Nautilus magazine if you were in the new
10:28 thought movement. And so inside of here,
10:29 um, I literally just grabbed one off the
10:31 shelf. I'm like, I'm pretty sure Charles
10:32 Handle promoted in here. I grabbed the
10:35 one. This one is from December 1924.
10:38 You open it up and page number one, you
10:40 got the Nautilus news and then boom,
10:42 right there is master key systems. And
10:44 so right here, Charles Hanel is uh
10:45 promoting Master Key systems. He says,
10:47 "The master key is the key with which
10:48 thousands and tens of thousands are
10:50 converting loss into gain, fear into
10:52 courage, despair into joy, hope into
10:53 fruition. It is a concise, definite
10:55 statement of the mighty law that
10:56 underlies and controls every living
10:58 thing. It is the open sesame to the
11:00 treasure house of nature. By it you may
11:02 compel conditions by controlling and
11:04 causing by which the conditions are
11:06 produced." And it goes on and calls out
11:08 like inventors, mechanics, economists,
11:10 psychotherapists, chemists, electrician
11:13 uh get a copy of it says send for your
11:15 free bookman. So basically you send out
11:17 for free copy and it says send for a
11:18 master keys booklet which will be sent
11:20 without cost or obligation of any kind
11:21 and has an address. So you would watch
11:23 that and then you would send out send me
11:24 a copy and then they would ship you out
11:26 a copy of the book set and you send it
11:27 back money afterwards. And so that's how
11:29 it worked and literally you see ads for
11:31 the master key systems in front of
11:33 almost every magazine that was published
11:34 during this time. So, inside of Napoleon
11:36 Hills, Hill Golden Rule magazine, boom,
11:38 Charles uh Handle is promoting in it.
11:40 Inside of Yeah, basically all the
11:42 publications back there almost 100% of
11:43 the time when you open it, you'll see
11:45 Charles Handle promoting the Master Key
11:47 system. So, kind of exciting. Just the
11:48 first magazine I grabbed today,
11:49 literally had it right there on page
11:51 number one. And now I want to take you
11:54 guys to the testimonial. So, Napoleon
11:56 Hill, I'm not sure if he got the home
11:58 study version. Can you imagine if this
11:59 was Napoleon Hill's copy of it? That
12:01 would be insane. Maybe it is. I don't
12:03 know. uh Napoleon Hill uh read it or he
12:05 read the the book but somewhere as he
12:06 was growing and developing he found this
12:08 book set he found these lessons he
12:10 studied them and this is the actual
12:11 testimonial he sent back to Charles
12:14 Hanel April 21st 1919 uh it says Mr.
12:17 Charles F Hanel St. Louis Missouri dear
12:18 Mr. panel. You probably know from the
12:20 editorial in the January issue of Hills
12:22 golden rule copy in which my secretary
12:24 sent to you that I began 22 years ago as
12:26 a coal miner at a dollar a day. I had
12:28 just been retained by a $10 million
12:30 corporation at a salary of $105,200 a
12:33 year for a portion of my time only. It
12:34 having been agreed that I shall continue
12:36 as the editor of Hills golden rule. I
12:38 believe in giving credit where credit is
12:39 due. Therefore, I believe I ought to
12:41 inform you that my present success and
12:42 the success which has followed my work
12:44 as president of the Napoleon Hill
12:45 Institute is due largely to the
12:47 principles laid down in the master key
12:49 systems. You are doing a good work by
12:50 helping people to realize that nothing
12:52 is impossible of accomplishment which a
12:53 man can create in his imagination.
12:55 Surely my own experience proves this. I
12:56 shall cooperate with you in getting your
12:58 course into the hands of the many who
13:00 are so greatly needed this message.
13:02 Cordially and sincerely, Napoleon Hill
13:03 editor. And one thing that's kind of
13:05 crazy later in his life after Charles
13:06 Hamill passed away when Napoleon Hill
13:08 was in later years, he actually also
13:10 wrote a book called The Master Key
13:11 Systems. In fact, I think I have it on
13:13 the shelf. Do you want to see it? If I
13:15 can find it real quick. So, you may
13:16 wonder where did Paul Hill get the idea
13:17 for this title, The Master Key to
13:20 Riches? Uh, I'm assuming it came from uh
13:22 Mr. Charles Hanel. And check this out.
13:26 This was a signed copy September 1948 to
13:28 Mary from Napoleon Hill with Love. So,
13:30 there's a signed copy of Napoleon Hill's
13:32 version of Master Key to Riches. So
13:34 there you go. Definitely inspired him
13:36 and Charles Handle is the man. If you
13:37 haven't heard of him yet, I highly
13:38 recommend reading the Master Key
13:41 systems. Obviously, it's a rare book out
13:42 there. I did go through the entire book
13:44 and I got my notes. So, if you want to
13:45 see my best notes, things I learned the
13:47 best, my favorite things from the master
13:48 key systems down in the description,
13:50 click that link, go to the notes page,
13:51 and you can download my notes from the
13:53 book and get the highlights of the best
13:54 things from the master key system. So,
13:55 you can take those ideas, plug them into
13:56 your head, and start applying them
13:58 instantly inside of your life. It's
13:59 interesting when when I look at these
14:02 authors, the authors who seem to still
14:03 be around and still relevant today are
14:05 the ones who first off they were great
14:06 marketers and advertisers. They got
14:08 their message out to a lot of people.
14:10 When they die, who is the person that
14:11 takes over their estate afterwards? Like
14:12 one of the most brilliant things that
14:14 Napoleon Hill did is before he passed
14:15 away, he set the Napoleon Hill
14:16 Foundation. He set up for president, a
14:18 CEO, all sorts of stuff. So there was
14:20 like a secession plans when he passed
14:21 away. With Charles Handel, I don't know
14:23 the story exactly, but after he died, it
14:25 stopped. Right? There's 70 years where
14:26 this book was no longer published. there
14:29 wasn't like a predecessor or a kid or a
14:30 foundation that was taking this and
14:32 continuing the message to go out there.
14:33 It just kind of ended. Whereas these
14:35 other people, the ones who more people
14:36 are familiar with are the ones where
14:38 they're able to figure out how to extend
14:40 their legacy past their life. And
14:42 unfortunately, it's true so many authors
14:44 where they spend their life creating and
14:45 figuring out and writing these books and
14:46 then they go out there and they publish
14:48 them and and within a generation, within
14:50 years, then 10 years, like people forgot
14:52 about them. And so I think for any of us
14:54 who are impact driven entrepreneurs who
14:55 are trying to figure out the impact
14:57 which is for me it's like someone once
14:58 asked me at one of my inner circle
14:59 meetings like why are you buying all
15:01 these old books and I said uh the reason
15:02 why I'm buying these and republishing
15:04 and sharing the stories is because the
15:05 vehicle that I will have to create to
15:07 extend the lives of these authors are
15:09 the same vehicle that I will be able to
15:10 use to extend my life for me like I want
15:13 my message to continue to go beyond my
15:15 generation when I die. I mean another
15:16 good example is Maxwell Maltz, one of
15:18 the greatest books of all time,
15:19 psychocybernetics, right? And most
15:21 people never heard of it. They've been
15:22 influenced by it, I guarantee, because
15:23 most of the teachers of today have used
15:26 his ideas to to teach and to frame, but
15:28 because he's his me and I think he sold
15:30 like 40 million copies of the book in
15:32 the 60s and no one's heard of him
15:33 anymore, right? I think it's because
15:35 after he passed, the family didn't know
15:36 what to do with it and it just it
15:39 disappeared. So, um, if you are legacy
15:40 driven like me, make sure you're
15:42 thinking about like how do you how do
15:43 you make sure that when you end the
