0:03 hi it's Annette and today I'm bringing
0:05 you a video all about my major at NYU
0:08 called media culture and communication
0:11 or MCC for short
0:14 so you may have heard about MCC or still
0:17 be confused about what it really is so I
0:19 thought I would make this video so that
0:21 you can have a better idea and
0:23 understanding about uh the unique area
0:25 of study that is MCC
0:28 to give a brief overview MCC at nyu's
0:30 undergrad level is a Bachelor of Science
0:33 in media culture and communication and
0:36 it's a pretty popular program at NYU and
0:38 it falls within NYU steinhardt School of
0:41 culture education and human development
0:44 and sometimes when I tell people my
0:46 major is MCC they often don't really
0:48 know what it really means but it's a
0:50 little bit difficult to explain just
0:53 because it's pretty Broad and covers a
0:55 very vast field of subjects
0:57 if you want to keep it simple it can be
0:58 compared to other colleges
1:02 Communications or media Majors however
1:04 it is still a bit different from that
1:07 on nyu's website it's defined as the
1:10 study of media and technology in their
1:12 cultural social and Global contexts so
1:15 these are all again very broad topics
1:18 but you can imagine it like this if you
1:20 have any interest in the Realms of media
1:23 culture or communication this major will
1:24 allow you to explore a very broad
1:27 spectrum of niches to help you figure
1:29 out what you want to do with your career
1:31 so this will make a lot more sense as I
1:33 dive more deeply into what classes are
1:36 offered within MCC but overall students
1:38 in MCC have a lot of control and
1:40 flexibility of what classes are
1:42 interesting to them and they're able to
1:45 map out their area of study accordingly
1:47 now going into what classes are required
1:50 for MCC students we can start with the
1:52 liberal arts requirements this
1:54 requirement list involves mandatory
1:56 writing foreign language science and
1:59 social science courses there's a very
2:00 broad selection of classes that you can
2:03 take Within These requirements so you
2:04 don't really need to be scared just in
2:07 case you're not a very stem person I
2:09 remember taking a Linguistics course to
2:12 fill up my science requirement and MCC
2:15 is very accommodating for taking AP or
2:18 IB credits from your high school so I
2:20 fulfilled most of my liberal arts
2:23 requirements from my AP exam credits
2:25 next There are 16 credits for the
2:28 liberal arts elective and 16 credits of
2:30 unrestructed electives so liberal arts
2:33 electives involve any classes from the
2:35 College of Arts and Science so here
2:37 you're going to have a super wide
2:39 selection so you can take any class that
2:42 sounds remotely interesting to you but
2:44 since you have to already take 16
2:46 credits within the College of Arts and
2:49 Science and 16 credits within NYU
2:52 overall I would honestly suggest that
2:54 you work towards a minor or a second
2:56 area of study if it works with your
2:58 graduation requirements
3:01 Cas has a lot of minors and it would be
3:03 really helpful to add on to your MCC
3:06 major in order to make your area of
3:09 study a little bit more specific for
3:11 example I added on a business minor and
3:13 a data science minor which both fall
3:17 within Cas on top of my MCC major so
3:19 while I'm working towards these minors
3:21 the same classes are also contributing
3:24 to my graduation requirements
3:27 next up are the MCC major specific
3:29 requirements this includes three classes
3:32 in the MCC core which are three very
3:34 theoretical intro classes to MCC
3:36 students often complete these three
3:38 courses within their freshman or
3:40 sophomore years something to note about
3:43 these classes are that they're very
3:45 reading and writing heavy and also
3:48 pretty Theory focused so they weren't
3:51 personally my favorite classes because I
3:53 prefer classes that are a little bit
3:55 more practical to the work I'll be doing
3:57 in my internships or career overall
4:00 however they were pretty much easy a so
4:02 I can't complain about that there are
4:05 also two other MCC requirements that our
4:07 new student seminar and inquiry seminar
4:10 so new student seminar is a pass fail
4:13 class that all new MCC students have to
4:15 take so it's basically just to help you
4:18 get adjusted to the curriculum and it
4:20 also can help you make friends within MCC
4:21 MCC
4:23 inquiry seminar is a research focused
4:25 class where students can learn about
4:28 specific research topics for example
4:31 psychoanalysis and there also is a class
4:34 called Netflix in Latin America so I
4:36 would recommend that you choose a topic
4:38 or class that you're pretty interested
4:40 in so that the class is more enjoyable
4:43 for you now I will go into the MCC focus
4:46 and framing courses which will paint a
4:49 better picture to you on what MCC can do
4:52 for you so mcc's courses aside from the
4:54 core classes I previously mentioned are
4:57 divided into five categories so you can
5:00 see here how students can explore and
5:02 choose which concentration that they're
5:05 most interested in so you have to take
5:07 two framing courses which are more
5:09 General and four Focus courses which are
5:12 more specific and From Within These
5:15 courses students can explore what they
5:17 like dislike and map out a class
5:20 selection that works best for them and
5:22 the careers they're interested in
5:24 the last list of requirements are called
5:27 professional electives and here you need
5:29 12 credits from classes that work to
5:31 help you get skills you may need in your
5:33 career and you can choose from a variety
5:35 of different fields for example politics
5:38 or journalism and this means you can
5:40 choose any class that falls within that
5:43 program for example you can pick any
5:45 class that falls within the econ program
5:47 and you can select your classes because
5:50 every econ class is going to begin with
5:53 the econ class code for example the econ
5:55 courses are going to begin with econ
5:58 Dash UA and the marketing classes are
5:59 going to begin with
6:03 mktg-ub so personally I'm pursuing a
6:05 career in marketing so my professional
6:07 electives largely fell within the
6:08 marketing program
6:10 and that's all you need to know for the
6:13 MCC curriculum and now I will move on to
6:15 the recommendations I have for MCC
6:18 students or prospective MCC students
6:20 firstly MCC is not too packed with
6:22 requirements so it's honestly quite easy
6:25 to graduate a semester early or even a
6:27 year early if you have previous AP
6:30 credits to apply or take a summer or
6:32 January term I know a lot of people who
6:35 graduate early at NYU and it honestly
6:37 makes sense especially financially since
6:39 NYU is quite an expensive School my
6:42 second recommendation is since MCC is
6:44 pretty broad I also recommend adding on
6:47 a second aerial study by either double
6:49 majoring or adding on a minor or double
6:52 minor so if you have some kind of idea
6:54 ahead of time on what classes you want
6:57 to take at MCC it's very likely that you
6:58 will easily be able to add on that
7:01 second area of study because you have
7:03 plenty of time and flexibility within
7:05 your requirements usually to add on
7:07 those extra classes so you can get those
7:09 minor requirements or double major
7:11 requirements out of the way so for
7:14 example I never took a January term or
7:16 summer term extra on top of my regular
7:18 course load however I'm still on track
7:21 to graduate on time with my major and
7:23 added two minors so what kind of jobs
7:26 can you even get with MCC and the short
7:29 answer is honestly any job unless you're
7:32 trying to be a doctor or something some
7:34 people look at mcc's Broad nature and
7:36 think that it's a con but actually
7:37 depending on who you are the broad
7:40 nature of MCC can really help you out
7:42 for example it's a great thing because
7:44 you won't feel trapped in a specific
7:47 area of study that you chose fresh out
7:49 of high school when you were 18 because
7:51 there's a lot of room for exploration
7:54 within MCC so you won't feel like you're
7:57 stuck in something that you don't feel
7:59 passionate in also you can go in just so
8:02 many different directions within MCC I
8:04 know people within this program of study
8:05 that are going to Sports Marketing
8:08 journalism producing finance and it's
8:11 all all very possible within the way the
8:14 curriculum is built and the curriculum
8:16 of course has some broad courses that
8:18 may not be as relevant to you or what
8:20 you want to do in the future but the
8:22 same goes for pretty much any other
8:24 degree program
8:27 and I think MCC really gives you the
8:30 room to of course build the fundamental
8:32 skills but also explore what you're
8:35 passionate about so personally I was
8:37 able to really hone in on the specific
8:39 areas that I was passionate about and
8:42 I've gotten opportunities in all kinds
8:43 of different Industries like Tech
8:48 Finance Consulting ad agencies so there
8:50 really is no limit to what you can do
8:53 so overall MCC does have its pros and
8:55 its cons and it's definitely not for
8:58 everyone however studying MCC definitely
9:01 pushed me to explore who I am at NYU and
9:03 it really taught me to take risks and
9:06 challenge myself to figure out what I
9:08 like and what I want to do and it did
9:11 contribute to help me get my dream job so
9:13 so
9:16 um I I would honestly say that it was a
9:18 good decision on my part to choose to
9:21 study MCC and that's all for today so
9:23 leave any questions in the comments down
9:24 below and I hope you have a great one bye
