0:04 earlier this year 2022 hi with two other
0:06 friends of mine you know we just wanted
0:08 House of community practice we were
0:11 tired of seven people like we wanted to
0:14 become our own bosses so we had the idea
0:17 we had inspiration so we had a
0:19 conviction it was time for us to start
0:21 our own Community Pharmacy in Nigeria
0:24 but personally as God would have it you
0:26 know God just changed my plans you know
0:28 the way God works now so I had a change
0:30 of plan along the line while my two
0:32 other friends eventually went ahead to
0:34 open their Community Practice this year
0:37 I wanna get closer
0:40 and guess what where I am presently
0:42 belongs to one of those two friends of
0:45 mine so today we are basically going to
0:47 be hearing from my friend how she was
0:51 able to resign from a 7 30 a.m to maybe
0:54 8 30 p.m job to start our own Community
0:57 Pharmacy and then all young pharmacists
0:58 out there can find this video very
1:01 useful or if they have the dream you
1:03 know to be their own bosses someday so
1:06 welcome with me pharmacist love she's
1:08 been a friend from way back so welcome
1:10 with me on the podium Pharmacy slow
1:13 you're welcome hi let's just dive
1:14 straight into the business of today
1:17 Found Love if I may ask you what
1:21 inspired you to resign from your job and
1:24 to start a community practice I would
1:26 say it's passion that prompted me to
1:29 open up my it has always been
1:31 um something I've wanted ever since I
1:33 entered pharmacy school so everything
1:35 I've been doing what working in a
1:36 community setting just like she has said
1:38 I've always been a community person all
1:40 my life like ever since I graduated from
1:43 pharmacy school so everything I've done
1:45 all these steps I've taken has always
1:48 been geared towards opening mind so when
1:51 it was set time like I've gathered a
1:53 little and I support was coming from
1:55 here and there I just said that's okay
1:58 this is the time boom I started wow wow
2:00 my friends Drive is quite different from
2:02 my drive because I when I wanted to
2:04 become My Own Boss what was driving me
2:07 was the fact that I was done with
2:08 Community Practice I was done working
2:11 for others I just wanted to be my own
2:14 boss and have control over my time and
2:16 the fact that you know sometimes when
2:19 you overstay when you overwork you spend
2:20 extra time at work you don't get
2:22 compensated in fact you don't even get
2:25 to thank you meanwhile if you are one
2:26 minute or two minutes or 10 minutes late
2:29 oftentimes you have to clock in and
2:30 clock out and if you are late at the end
2:32 of the month in deduct from your salary
2:34 I was just you know I was just on at
2:36 that moment and that was what was
2:38 driving me to want to hold my own
2:40 Community Pharmacy so for my friend I
2:42 guess it's different because she had
2:44 everything planned out being that her
2:47 dad is a pharmacist who is a pharmacist
2:51 in fact around 2014 2015 we had our IIT
2:52 at our uncle's place and that was where
2:54 we became very
2:56 um talking about strategic location
2:57 because oftentimes we hear young
2:59 pharmacists say they are looking for
3:02 strategic locations to staff their own
3:04 Pharmacy so what were the things you
3:06 considered when you were looking for a
3:08 place to rent what were these strategic
3:11 Imports now that you were particularly
3:12 about when you were looking for
3:16 somewhere to rent for the location from
3:18 what I gathered it should be somewhere
3:20 between commercial setting and also
3:22 residential setting so so that there
3:25 will be during the morning Duty we have
3:27 in our hands you have enough sales and
3:28 also in the evening as well so you
3:31 should not be fixed one side it should
3:32 be balanced if you can get somewhere
3:34 that is very very balanced so that
3:36 that's a huge plus then it should be
3:38 somewhere accessible like a junction
3:41 somewhere where you know not yeah I mean
3:42 you're not restricted to only people
3:45 living in a particular place or there's
3:47 only same faces you keep seeing all the
3:49 time so it should be somewhere where you
3:51 keep seeing new faces and people that
3:53 are just going I mean somewhere very
3:55 accessible where you get to meet
3:57 different people every day
4:00 so like she rightly said good road
4:03 Network and like somewhere easily
4:05 accessible and also it should be between
4:07 it shouldn't be densely residential
4:09 before now I thought it was firstly
4:11 residential area somewhere close to the
4:13 market and all that so it's not Market
4:15 possible that has commercial activities
4:17 going on and I remember working with one
4:20 boss that intentionally opened his
4:23 Pharmacy along the entrance of a major
4:26 estate in ibadan it was targeting only
4:28 the residents of the estate okay
4:32 meanwhile he did his disability studies
4:35 according to him and along the line I
4:36 just discovered that these patients were
4:37 not coming the residents were no
4:39 entering and one of them had to open up
4:40 to me that the reason why they are not
4:42 coming is because they believe that my
4:45 boss has come to like start them and
4:47 they would rather go out and buy their
4:49 items outside where they don't know
4:52 their status
4:54 and the funniest thing about this client
4:57 is oh if they now go outside and confirm
5:00 that your is that we okay the shame some
5:02 of them the shin will not make them to
5:04 come back and tell you that okay we are
5:07 sorry actually your prices are okay they
5:09 will just like bone off like okay and
5:11 I'll get it somewhere else like without
5:13 coming back to you so when you're
5:15 considering location be mindful don't
5:17 don't don't don't focus on just a
5:20 category of people population your
5:23 demography must be wise like you should
5:26 focus no income earners below average
5:29 average above average and the reach so
5:31 size your location somewhere where you
5:33 have all these categories of people not
5:39 for people that got it right during
5:41 covet period there are people who were
5:44 basically at home so this was the
5:45 residential people they were enjoying
5:46 that time because commercial activities
5:48 were not going on so now imagine someone
5:50 that cited this former senior a
5:53 commercial setting that's that's a big
5:56 problem a huge loss so just try to
6:02 and something similar to what you're
6:03 selling so that you won't have people
6:05 start comparing prices around and all
6:08 that yeah so uh one other thing that I
6:11 have heard is that if it is at around
6:13 the major bus stop then it's a plus to
6:15 you because when people take bikes they
6:17 can easily highlight and that bus stop
6:19 when people take cabs they can highlight
6:22 so if you have these sure people will be
6:25 more so if you have a um if you get a
6:27 shop around a major bus stop that's also
6:29 a plus you and then talking about
6:31 hospitals around or maybe Laboratories
6:35 around that's very good so it is
6:37 because some hospitals will stop their
6:39 medications by themselves they might not
6:42 patronize you well I don't I won't say
6:45 it actually it minus or it's where it of
6:46 course everything and its own advantage
6:48 and disadvantages but it's more of a
6:50 plus because what you just need to just
6:53 reach uh which you compromise okay if
6:54 you're getting from us you'll be getting
6:56 this particular discount or something
6:58 something like that so it's just
7:01 something and if they are more like not
7:03 just one so you have you can select from
7:05 a lot of them that are right so and also
7:07 laboratory somewhere you can refer then
7:09 you can refer back to you as well so
7:11 it's a prostitute thank you very much
7:13 now talking about finances now like you
7:16 started early this year or like mid this
7:19 year how much would you say it cost you
7:21 to start off this cute it's cute because
7:23 it has the basic things that a Community
7:26 Pharmacy should have it is cute and I
7:27 love it I've been this my third time
7:29 coming here the first time I was here
7:31 she was so busy I had to reschedule and
7:33 the next time I came I had issues with
7:35 my microphone and I had to come again
7:37 today and it's been busy you know we've
7:39 been going on and off like that so this
7:41 is a cute place like how much did you
7:42 start with talking about rent talking
7:45 about infrastructures putting all these
7:47 chefs in place and others how much did
7:50 you spend like in total okay
7:53 um while starting and I think I had like
7:56 oh I think three three him that's the
7:58 medium that was earlier this year too
8:00 sometimes goes on you know you'll get um
8:03 just by the grace of God so people will
8:05 come to support friends and family so I
8:07 can say what actually finished this um
8:10 set scene is like four million and
8:13 that's asaps yeah
8:20 or just have an idea so like and it also
8:23 depends on the location that you are a
8:24 rent size that you are looking for just
8:26 like she says this is like almost 30
8:28 square meters exactly exactly this place
8:30 is exactly
8:33 so if you are renting a bigger shop it
8:35 might be more expensive so depending on
8:37 the location and the size and The Taste
8:39 but with like for him you can still
8:41 start something but if you want to start
8:43 and assuming you want to start just now
8:44 you'll be spending like let's say maybe
8:47 five him or 6m because these prices are
8:50 not smiling now so playing forever since
8:53 I was there if you have like 3M 3.5 mm I
8:54 would encourage you to buy it please
8:57 just start looking for a strategic
8:59 location following the definition of
9:01 strategic that we have mentioned here
9:03 now let's talk about regrets you have
9:06 any regrets or any lesson that you have
9:08 learned so far and or you will discover
9:10 that have you discovered that you made a
9:12 mistake that you would like to you know
9:14 write the mistake and you would want to
9:16 advise any young pharmacist against
9:17 making such mistakes when they want to
9:20 open their own Pharmacy okay I would
9:22 rather put it to be what I've learned so
9:26 far because uh just like I said before
9:28 um I worked with in a Community Pharmacy
9:30 where I was coming from so I've learned
9:33 a lot from there because it's also in a
9:35 new premise I registered the place newly
9:39 so I've gathered a lot from well the
9:40 owners I mean the experiences I've
9:42 gathered has really helped me so I won't
9:43 call them regrets because I've already
9:46 seen this like foreseen how startup
9:49 looks like so what I would say is
9:51 Staffing I had issues with Staffing
9:54 because while I was starting or majority
9:55 of the staff that I got to a student
9:58 because as was on strike so there was
10:00 thinking that okay I've skipped through
10:02 this year like as it's not going to
10:04 follow the abstract and then all of a
10:06 sudden as a colleague so all my stuff
10:09 all of them since I was left alone it
10:13 was frustrating that I was diet I just
10:14 felt like closing the youth and they're
10:15 like I'm so tired I can't continue again
10:18 but I just keep at it and then yeah I'm
10:21 better now I'm better now so uh I would
10:23 say we should look for
10:25 for your Staffing it should be very that
10:26 one is very very important and you
10:28 should make their working condition and
10:30 condition for them to stay not like you
10:32 the Staffing every other month they are
10:35 about so Staffing is very important and
10:38 also a resource for your items whether
10:41 drugs or also the supermarket items so
10:42 you try to check to friends or
10:45 wholesalers now you don't stick to one I
10:47 just believe that someone is like that's
10:49 the best price person is giving you
10:52 because I I I I had issues with that I
10:54 thought there was no particular retailer
10:58 that uh I mean wholesaler that I uh I I
11:00 got small majority of my products from
11:02 so it was later I discovered that wow
11:04 the difference was so clear it was so
11:06 huge I remember we were complaining and
11:07 you know as the start for picker you
11:08 must be very careful with your pricing
11:10 so that people will not just park the
11:12 place as being expensive and they will
11:13 not even bother patronizing you again I
11:15 know word of months in Nigeria what the
11:17 man can kill you they don't even know
11:19 what is going on so I just had to like
11:21 in fact there were some times I had to
11:23 sell the same price just to bring it up
11:24 because when I was seeing the
11:27 differences I mean I comparing to others
11:29 a lot I was saying like 500 defense on
11:31 one item like it was so much sometimes I
11:34 just had to say like a loss of us using
11:36 other consultation field and others to
11:39 cover it up but then so that one opened
11:42 my mind like I don't trust anybody says
11:44 I don't get my attention from one
11:46 particular ocean so it was Ocilla so I
11:47 just tried to check through all of them
11:49 and see the price that is favorable to
11:52 me and uh so I'm sure when people come
11:54 and start you know clients now you start
11:55 saying oh are you sure this is your
11:57 prices somewhere I will go this place
11:58 and just you're free man I'll probably
12:00 slide it on it you can compare so in
12:03 terms of stocking yeah shop around um
12:08 don't be lazy because it's not easy
12:10 serious don't say you want to buy all
12:11 your products
12:15 exactly like yourself
12:17 because people will compare that when
12:18 it's natural
12:21 and so you must be on your head games at
12:22 least if they're going to compare there
12:25 shouldn't be that UI or World difference
12:27 okay you mentioned you talked about
12:29 stuffing and in one of my videos here I
12:31 talked about how pharmacists can make
12:34 life easy for one another in the sense
12:37 that one thing that I dislike I detest
12:39 so much about Community Practice is the
12:42 weekend course particularly imagine me
12:43 working eight hours Monday through
12:45 Fridays on a weekend I'm working on
12:48 Godly 14 hours on a Saturday so what do
12:49 you think what do you want to do
12:51 differently because I am sure we've
12:52 discussed it what do you want to do
12:54 differently now that you are an employer
12:56 you are your boss and you are because
12:58 you're just starting you're managing
12:59 this place for yourself by yourself you
13:01 are your superintendent pharmacist but
13:03 when time is coming when you'll be so
13:05 big that you won't be able to sit here
13:08 you need to employ it what do you intend
13:10 to do to make life easy for your staff
13:12 because she talked about making life
13:13 easy for
13:16 um to our domestic staff like the sales
13:18 process so that you won't have frequent
13:20 turnovers so what you want to do
13:22 differently because in my video I talked
13:24 about working like 12 hours three to
13:25 four days in a week and having the rest
13:27 of the week to rest everywhere where
13:29 I've worked before opening my I only
13:31 work eight hours so I've never had even
13:33 weekends so I've never had experience of
13:36 working at a stretch or working 12 hours
13:39 so there about so and I don't want to I
13:40 don't think I can practice that because
13:42 I never experienced this apart from the
13:44 fact that okay now I'm the boss so I
13:46 have to be here almost 24 7. in as much
13:50 as this place is open but for a time
13:52 goes on that we need to employ someone a
13:55 pharmacist of us because I believe in
13:57 productivity not just the length of
13:59 hours that you're working so I did and
14:01 the number of hours that will be
14:02 productive that's what I need so I don't
14:05 need you to just be there as figure it I
14:07 need this to be working and I know we
14:09 are human so it's ours is eight hours
14:12 for me so we are not matches and then
14:14 Mondays through Fridays and eight hours weekends
14:20 in fact I wish that our employers would
14:22 be giving us call allowance for weekends
14:25 you make where you make a wages for
14:27 salaries for weekends
14:32 that would really make more sense so
14:34 um what would you advise people to stuck
14:37 with their pharmaceutical products from
14:39 would you advise them to buy from
14:41 representatives from new reps medical
14:43 sales reps or to go and buy from
14:45 wholesalers from experience which one
14:47 seems to be cheaper to you I know the
14:49 method of payment for reps is quite the
14:51 flexible in the sense that you can buy
14:53 and not pay anything you can even do
14:55 sales or return which you are you might
14:56 not be able to do with wholesalers or in
14:58 terms of pricing what have you
15:01 discovered to me yeah so far all the
15:04 rest I've dealt with their prices are
15:06 almost the same as the wholesalers so
15:08 but the issue I had when I opened was
15:11 the ground has been spoiled so then
15:12 ocelands were not ready to just release
15:14 their goals for you without you paying
15:16 like 90 of
15:18 just carry the one that you know you can
15:21 pay for at the moment so until you be a
15:23 big trust with them like after
15:24 purchasing for like five months or
15:26 something consistently that's when they
15:28 can now release their goods to you and
15:29 then you pay back before you order
15:32 another one so for me I I have to follow
15:35 them oh sellers verbs every point is
15:37 because I needed help at that moment
15:39 because while our the experiences I
15:41 gathered from my boss my previous boss
15:43 was just because we won the wholesalers
15:45 and since I have a senior colleagues
15:47 that can vouch for me that can stand in
15:50 for me but when the whole thing started
15:51 I got that I found out that the game has
15:54 changed entirely you just have to pay
15:56 everything that you want to get they
15:57 know they are not ready to allow
16:00 anything to stand for that situation
16:03 then you should patronize reps more so
16:05 then yes that was I said I all of them
16:07 came through for me so I had to call my
16:10 friends that were reps and I refer to
16:12 peoples that I've known before in what
16:13 week can you help me out I need these
16:16 things so for them I mean God just helps
16:17 me they were so compassionate enough
16:19 they didn't give me any exorbitant price
16:22 they gave me the correct price so and
16:25 gave me time to pay uh to pay off so if
16:27 you're a young pharmacist you need to
16:29 develop good relationship with everybody
16:31 especially people yeah I would
16:34 eventually work you need their help if
16:35 you plan to open your Community Pharmacy
16:38 you might see it's a lot that you must
16:40 still meet at some point in life so you
16:41 have to build good relationships with
16:43 people and that leads to the question
16:46 why because I found out that Community
16:48 pharmacists maybe in ibadan they don't
16:51 like to pay Representatives they do
16:53 community pharmacists prefer to all reps
16:55 that are similarly doing them favor by
16:59 giving them items drugs on credits why
17:02 did they prefer to all reps and at the
17:04 same time they will carry their Cash and
17:06 Go to wholesalers go and purchase and do
17:09 cash and carry now that you are on the
17:16 because okay I can say both everywhere
17:19 I've walked they don't go rest so I
17:20 don't think I've ever experienced that
17:21 so for the me to understand the reason
17:29 videos please seriously I don't know
17:32 because I can't I can't relate why will
17:33 you do that first like someone trying to
17:35 help because I know how all of them
17:37 stood for me and they gave me good they
17:40 gave me drugs free not like free like to
17:43 pay later companies price so why will I
17:46 I don't know why will I pay them back in
17:48 a bad way like not paying them I guess
17:50 we will supply Goods that are about to
17:53 expire like maybe spiders and they will
17:55 slash the price and these people will
17:58 find it difficult to pay they would have
17:59 finished selling all these drugs so see
18:06 finally what advice do you have for
18:07 young pharmacists out there that are
18:09 probably still doing the internship or
18:12 serving or still Gathering experience
18:13 what advice do you have for them
18:14 especially those that are business
18:17 oriented and want to open their
18:20 Community Pharmacy in the future okay
18:22 um I wish myself as a case study I
18:24 already knew that um I'll be starting up
18:25 my Community Pharmacy
18:28 so what I did is I was so strategic I
18:30 wasn't really particularly about the PO
18:32 first the pay is also part of it like
18:34 okay let me give you an example I've
18:36 always worked with a big pharmaceutical
18:37 when I know it was time for me to now
18:39 start up something I needed experience
18:41 on how to start up and what I need to do
18:43 what I need to put in place because okay
18:45 I try asking all those big big
18:46 pharmacists but they know their
18:48 experiences are faded like they can't
18:50 remember how they started again and I
18:52 could not relate they'll be like ah I
18:53 started in a very small place and at
18:56 that time square meter was not um fixed
18:58 so it's anywhere you get you can start
19:00 off so I cannot relate I needed someone
19:03 I can relate to someone that just
19:06 started there I mean not quite long so
19:08 what I did was to look out for a new
19:10 premise I wanted to end this pharmacist
19:13 and I opted him for him to work it so
19:14 while I was there I didn't look for it I
19:16 didn't lose focus I was asking relevance
19:17 questions before the person will forget
19:19 because it's normal I was asking okay
19:20 how much you're saying is how did it go
19:34 if it is community I would advise that
19:36 you start you you go to where or you
19:37 work with someone that is just starting
19:39 maybe two or three years that can
19:41 explain how things at you because it's
19:44 not as rosy as you think you get
19:46 hands-on experience and person will be
19:49 really you will be ready to help to also
19:53 um I mean um we'll be able to reward you
19:55 from the person's experience then refer
19:57 you to possible people that can help you
20:00 out when you're ready to go so thank you
20:02 so much for your time I don't want to
20:04 bother us about PC and Revelations
20:07 because of course you can always read it
