0:03 when it comes to mental health the
0:06 United States has a long way to go from
0:08 caring for those with mental illness to
0:10 changing public perception and often we
0:13 get it so wrong here are four myths
0:15 about mental health in the US myth
0:18 number one mental illness is rare
0:20 actually one in four adults experiences
0:23 mental illness every year that includes
0:24 everything from depression to eating
0:27 disorders OCD and schizophrenia even
0:30 tobs like John Ham Lena Dunham and Lady
0:31 Gaga have spoken out about the
0:33 importance of addressing mental health
0:36 issues of their own bipolar depression
0:38 really got my life off track but today
0:40 I'm proud to say I'm living proof that
0:43 someone can live love and be well with
0:45 bipolar disorder when they get the
0:47 education support and treatment they
0:49 need myth number two if the mentally ill
0:52 just wanted help they could get it well
0:54 getting treatment in the US is not so
0:57 easy 90 million Americans live in places
0:59 without easy access to mental health
1:02 assistance between 2009 and 2012 States
1:05 cut $5 billion for mental health
1:07 services in 1950 there was one
1:09 psychiatric bed for every 300 Americans
1:13 and in 2010 that number was 1 in
1:17 7100 how did it get so bad in the 1980s
1:18 President Ronald Reagan nationalized a
1:20 trend that started in his home state of
1:23 California moving people out of Hospital
1:25 psychiatric boards Federal mental health
1:28 spending went down by 30% many were left
1:30 without proper care off often becoming
1:34 homeless or imprisoned today up to 30%
1:35 of homeless people have a serious mental
1:38 illness that's five times the rate in
1:40 the general population and there are 10
1:42 times as many mentally ill people behind
1:45 bars as in state hospitals myth number
1:48 three mentally ill people are violent
1:49 when we do talk about mental health in
1:51 the US it's often on the heels of
1:53 tragedies like murder the co-pilot who
1:55 crashed flight 9525 into the Alps
1:58 killing 149 people and himself had a
2:01 mental illness CBS News has learned that
2:03 James Holmes had seen at least three
2:05 mental health professionals Lanza had
2:08 significant mental health issues but
2:10 only 3 to 5% of violent acts in the
2:12 United States are committed by people
2:14 with serious mental illness in fact
2:16 people with mental illness are 10 times
2:18 more likely to be victims of violent
2:21 crimes than the rest of society and of
2:23 the 38,000 people who commit suicide
2:25 each year it's estimated that 90% have
2:27 had a mental illness and people with
2:30 serious mental illness die up to 20 3
2:32 years sooner than other Americans myth
2:34 number four fixing the system is just
2:36 too expensive well taxpayers actually
2:39 end up paying more for the consequences
2:40 of mental illness than they would for
2:43 preventative treatment for every $2 to
2:45 $3,000 spent each year on treating the
2:48 mentally ill $50,000 is saved on
2:51 incarceration costs so after all this
2:53 maybe it's the system that's truly insane
2:54 insane [Music]
