0:05 welcome I wanted to show these three
0:11 maps today one is from 1595 this one
0:17 here is from 1606 let's see this one is
0:23 the 1595 and this one is also 1606 so I
0:29 want to focus on a few different points
0:33 first of all an interesting point here
0:39 is we have Greenland with no ice and
0:41 that's pretty interesting to have
0:45 charted mountains and rivers and even
0:48 right here we can see some towns one
0:51 town two towns that's how they mark
0:54 their towns as you can see in Iceland
0:57 here which is spelled Island at the time
1:02 many towns and totally ice-free and
1:05 again this would be
1:12 1606 and yeah you you get an idea of
1:14 what the towns look like what the
1:19 forests looked like and what I wanted to
1:21 focus on was this little island here
1:24 called it appears as if it's called
1:27 Freeland here but at times it's called Friesland
1:30 Friesland
1:34 like Friesland maybe and you can see how
1:36 many towns actually there are in
1:39 Friesland i mean if this is not some
1:42 imaginary town
1:47 now if we jump over here we also see Friesland
1:56 with many towns Iceland still many towns
2:01 Greenland free of eyes and if we jump
2:17 we can see it here Friesland and here it
2:21 has the s and this map shows up really
2:24 crisp so here we have Greenland
2:31 Greenland Iceland again spelled with a s land
2:39 [Music]
2:44 and here it is again now if we jump over
2:48 to this map for modern-day map
2:52 which of course is a little exaggerated
2:57 but there is no sign whatsoever a
3:01 Friesland I mean like none not even
3:05 close and I'm just gonna focus on three
3:10 Maps today but hundreds and verify this [Music]
3:13 [Music]
3:17 now the next thing I wanted to focus on
3:24 was these towns in Asia or what we call
3:30 Asia in modern times now Asia would be
3:34 up here and over here we would have Europe
3:35 Europe [Music]
3:37 [Music]
3:40 Sweden and Finland right here we have
3:43 Russia and in in these times Russia was
3:49 called ruse and this is shortly after
3:54 the name was Tartarian so already we see
4:00 Tarte area replaced with ruse but what I
4:04 was going to focus on was these parts of
4:10 Asia which we would now call Mongolia
4:14 and just to have a reference let's see
4:18 what it looks like on this man
4:22 smarter so yeah we're gonna be talking
4:30 no not Mongolia I was totally wrong
4:34 sorry so yeah this is just Siberia and
4:37 very remote I mean you know Moscow is
4:40 over here by Europe and most of the
4:42 towns are in this lower area and I mean
4:44 when you're talking this is like
4:48 equivalent to you know our Alaska but
4:52 much bigger and much more and so yeah
4:54 let's have a look on the old map now of
4:58 this region and we see many towns
5:04 amongst these mountains here and here a
5:06 bigger one well that appears to be a
5:12 castle smaller but still substantial and
5:15 even something here I'm not sure what
5:16 that is it's coming in a little grainy
5:21 for me and here we have tarter wild
5:25 these are in the tartar cities now let's
5:32 jump over to the very same same maker by
5:35 the way this is marcador again this map
5:40 of mercado is very very similar also of
5:51 1595 but what we can see sorry I was
5:54 having an issue now what we can see is
5:58 in this northern part of Asia we have 1
6:03 & 2 towns in this region where we had
6:06 about a half a dozen before and we still
6:08 see this strange thing I don't know if
6:11 it's a figure of a man or a statue and
6:15 now he has no color and yeah much less
6:23 activity much less activity as we saw in
6:44 you see Friesland ricotta always felt it
6:47 was important to put Friesland in his
6:51 maps I mean you know you you're pretty
6:56 limited here he has his for sports and
6:59 Friesland is zoomed in whereas typically
7:04 it is here you can see it's a very it's
7:07 not even very small it's it it's a fair
7:10 sized island it's about half of Iceland
7:12 so yeah again here it is now in this
7:17 later version of a 1595 map and really
7:20 again this is all about an 11 year
7:31 change from 1595 to 1606 and here we now
7:36 see nothing we see ghosts ghostly shells
7:42 of towns but not significant not like we
7:46 see in these maps when we look at
7:52 Friesland or in this one very
7:55 significant very significant town
7:59 activity it's it's very clear and he
8:01 puts this in the corner of his map and
8:08 then we see this and there may be one
8:11 here or maybe but really they've become
8:17 ghosts and so next i want to focus on
8:21 this very most obvious part of this map
8:27 of 1595 which is this i mean this is
8:31 absolutely amazing this north polar
8:36 region and again ricotta Mikoto gave us
8:40 this map I mean maybe not this exact
8:43 version but when we started using this
8:46 map this is McCotter who gave us this
8:50 and he's a very respected map maker and
8:53 we can't assume that
8:58 he was a fool and and put this island
9:06 here with great detail and here in the
9:11 center is Rufus is what he calls
9:16 it and this is the North Pole this is a
9:19 magnetic Black Rock as it's been
9:23 described in the text that we do have I
9:25 mean there's a lot of a lot written
9:27 about this and obviously there's map
9:32 making and we can see this in hundreds
9:34 if not thousands of maps even in this
9:38 map we see it we see it in this version
9:43 and this map makers name was Paulus
9:50 marula and this island appears to be
9:52 gone now just a little tip shows up on
9:56 maps these days or Google Earth is Nova
10:00 Simla just a little piece of it and it
10:04 even has that name still but definitely
10:09 this North Pole is gone and yet up to a
10:12 certain date we always had this and here
10:13 if you look to the left we have
10:16 Greenland and Greenland almost connects
10:22 in most maps and then we would have
10:25 Iceland right here and in this map we
10:31 cannot see Friesland and it would be off
10:41 right about here so this North Pole here
10:43 we see we have pygmies a region
10:46 inhabited by pygmies now this I think is
10:56 written in Latin and these rivers and as
10:58 it's been written and again I don't have
11:00 the writings here but I've heard there's
11:03 a lot of a lot of information and these
11:05 rivers were said to flow
11:08 word I think one maybe one or two float
11:10 outward and one float inward but it was
11:14 as if it was a drain and sailors would
11:16 get pulled in and it was very difficult
11:22 to get out and really fascinating and
11:29 only 11 years later we now see a portion
11:35 of this pygmy portion missing it's
11:38 missing it's been faded out and these
11:41 islands have changed right here which
11:44 pretty much you know you might be able
11:49 to know regardless here's the Nova's
11:54 imlah that I was talking about and yeah
11:56 these islands have completely changed
12:06 some things are just gone some some
12:09 parts of it are completely gone and so
12:12 the next thing that I wanted to focus on
12:15 was something on this map actually and
12:18 I'd like to do another video more on on
12:25 the Americas North America but I found
12:27 this really fascinating how right by
12:31 where Chicago might be we have shylaja
12:35 and we have a town again we see a town
12:38 on the river and in all maps this is
12:41 this region here is always she laga and
12:43 to me it always seemed like it was very
12:47 much like Chicago but here again you can
12:51 see the North Pole in this map as well
12:57 and Iceland is called island and we can
13:02 see it here Iceland and Greenland and
13:06 here I believe we can see Friesland so
13:09 Friesland is still here and even another Island
13:11 Island
13:16 close to the east coast of Canada and
13:18 you know I encourage you to pull these
13:21 videos up and study them for yourselves
13:24 I mean they're really really fascinating
13:26 and especially these areas work you know
13:30 if you look on Google now you know I
13:31 mean what are you gonna get when you
13:33 look at green wonder here's what you're
13:37 gonna get and I don't really think I
13:39 don't really think this we're seeing
13:41 what we're seeing I think this is just
13:46 kind of imposed over I mean this doesn't
13:48 look and I've played around with
13:51 Antarctica and you'll see pure ice and
13:54 then if you zoom in and allow it to load
13:56 a little bit and it's doing it a little
13:58 bit here things will load and I've
14:00 actually pulled up lakes and Green
14:04 Mountains in Antarctica and I've done
14:06 the same thing with the deserts in
14:10 Nevada where it looks like just a bleak
14:13 white kind of tan desert and then you
14:16 zoom in and there's all sorts of amazing
14:18 things but yeah I find it fascinating
14:21 that you know these older maps
14:25 completely show all the rivers and we
14:27 get a better picture of what's really
14:29 going on from these older maps than we
14:33 do from from these Google images that's
14:36 for sure I mean here we can see Iceland [Music]
14:38 [Music]
14:44 now let's note on this map how this
14:48 little town right here called Saxa mixed
14:52 to skull Bouldin beautiful castle of
14:55 skull Bouldin has three would look like towers
14:57 towers
15:04 three skyscrapers and if we jump over to
15:11 this version down here we can't see
15:16 these three skyscrapers to mid-size and
15:18 one larger than the others and this
15:22 skull Holden Castle now I find it really
15:28 interesting that if we look at where the
15:32 ice is it appears to me as if the ice is
15:40 sitting right on top of this area and
15:45 once again let's have a look right where
15:48 that would be bone [Music]
16:00 but again giant chunks of missing I mean
16:02 when we looked at those older maps there
16:05 were towns all over Iceland and it was
16:08 completely ice-free and that's not what
16:11 we see now and we certainly don't see
16:15 our little island of Friesland which was
16:19 half the size of Iceland in thousands of
16:23 maps going back as far back as map
16:26 making goes and I find it really
16:30 fascinating and of course our north
16:35 polar region is completely missing and
16:38 and I don't know I mean I think what are
16:40 we really looking at here I mean what
16:45 has what has Google given us but I find
16:47 it interesting that there is no imagery
16:56 here but yet if you go over here there's
16:59 a little trick that I've seen I saw it
17:02 on YouTube and you can go to this little
17:04 island here pretty much in between [Music]
17:06 [Music]
17:12 Alaska and that Siberian region you to
17:15 zoom in to this little island here and
17:17 all of a sudden it's like I don't know
17:20 if someone was leaving this this is a
17:25 little clue but this thing goes on and
17:28 on and I think it goes right to the
17:30 North Pole and I followed it and I don't
17:32 know I don't know if I'll do too much of
17:34 it right now and you can go back and do
17:37 this yourself but it appears you know I
17:41 mean this looks this line looks more realistic
17:43 realistic
17:48 then this blue now it turns into two
17:51 lines and yeah I don't know if that's an
17:55 error or if it was a little gift but yes
17:59 I mean I think that you know and I don't
18:01 know how much we could we can really
18:06 zoom in but yeah there's activity here
18:10 there's action as there has been shown
18:13 in all of these older maps so it's
18:14 pretty fun actually I'd encourage you to
18:16 go take a little trip down this line
18:20 here and it's very much full of full of
18:22 more truth and I think what we see here
18:25 so that's it for today
18:29 thanks so much for watching please like
