0:07 4 reading the first 11 verses the
0:09 account of the temptation of our Lord Jesus
0:10 Jesus
0:14 Christ during these evening messages
0:15 we're looking at the
0:19 Milestones with the master his birth his
0:24 baptism and now his temptation the Lord
0:26 willing our next message will deal with the
0:27 the
0:30 Transfiguration why was Jesus
0:33 transfigured and what does it mean to us
0:38 today Matthew 4 notice the first word in
0:40 the chapter
0:43 then meaning immediately after this
0:46 tremendous experience of
0:49 baptism then was Jesus led up by the
0:52 spirit Into the Wilderness to be tested
0:54 or tempted by the
0:58 devil and when he had fasted 40 days and
1:00 40 nights he was afterward hung
1:03 hungry and when the tempter came to him
1:05 he said if thou be the Son of
1:10 God command that these Stones be made
1:12 bread but he answered and said it is
1:14 written man shall not live by bread
1:17 alone but by every word that proceedeth
1:19 out of the mouth of
1:22 God then the devil taketh him up into
1:26 the holy city and Seth him on a pinnacle
1:27 of the
1:29 temple and Seth to him if thou be the
1:33 Son of God cast thyself down for it is
1:36 written he shall give his angels charge
1:39 concerning thee and in their hands they
1:41 shall bear thee up lest at any time thou
1:45 Dash thy foot against a stone Jesus said
1:47 unto him it is written
1:50 again Thou shalt not put the Lord thy
1:54 God to the test Thou shalt not tempt the
1:55 Lord thy
1:58 God again the devil taketh him up into
2:00 an exceeding high mountain and showeth
2:02 him all the kingdoms of the world and
2:06 the glory of them and Seth unto him all
2:09 these things will I give
2:13 thee if thou will fall down and worship
2:17 me then sayth Jesus unto
2:19 him be gone
2:23 Satan for it is written Thou shalt
2:25 Worship the Lord thy God and him only
2:27 shalt thou
2:29 serve then the devil leaveth him and beh
2:31 old Angels
2:36 Came and ministered unto
2:39 him all of us are interested in victory over
2:41 over
2:43 Temptation perhaps someone is here just
2:47 now who looks back over the past
2:50 week with shame and disgust and
2:54 discouragement because you gave in to a
2:57 Temptation or if you had a week of
2:58 victory at least you know you were tempted
2:59 tempted
3:02 and none of us enjoys being tempted but
3:04 we know that temptation is a part of the
3:07 Christian Life for one thing Temptation builds
3:09 builds
3:11 character the only way to have spiritual
3:15 muscles is to exercise them and you
3:18 can't exercise your muscles
3:21 resting there cannot be victories without
3:22 without
3:24 battles and you're not going to have
3:26 battles without Temptations and so
3:30 Temptation builds character from God 's
3:33 point of view Temptation ought to bring
3:36 out the best in us that which he has put
3:39 into us from the devil's point of view
3:42 Temptation brings out the worst in us
3:44 that which belongs to our first birth
3:46 not our second birth of course
3:48 Temptation when we get victory over it brings
3:49 brings
3:52 reward blessed is he that endureth
3:53 Temptation for he shall receive the
3:57 Crown of Life and God has a reward for
3:59 those who endure Temptation and get
4:01 victory even our lord Jesus was
4:04 ministered to by the Angels when three
4:07 times he got victory over Satan of
4:10 course if we yield to Temptation it
4:13 means not reward but regret and remorse
4:16 and discipline from the hand of our loving
4:17 loving
4:19 father I think most of all enduring
4:22 Temptation and getting victory over
4:24 Temptation brings glory to God this is
4:26 the thing we want more than anything
4:29 else totally apart from any reward or
4:30 even the building of character which is
4:35 a wonderful thing we want to glorify God
4:37 and when we get victory over the tempter
4:40 it it advances the cause of Christ and
4:43 it brings glory to God now you may say
4:45 well my little life that I live can't
4:48 mean much to the cause of Christ oh yes it
4:49 it
4:51 can if you're saved and you're a part of
4:54 the body of Christ if one member becomes
4:57 weak and infected it affects all the
5:00 members and your victory
5:04 helps to advance the cause of Christ and
5:05 so all of us are interested in
5:07 Temptation now what is
5:12 Temptation well temptation is simply an
5:16 opportunity to satisfy a legitimate
5:19 need in a wrong
5:22 way for example it's not a sin to be
5:26 hungry hunger is a sinless infirmity of the
5:26 the
5:30 flesh but to satisfy that hunger outside
5:33 the will of God that's sin and so
5:36 temptation is an opportunity to meet a
5:41 legitimate need in an illegitimate way
5:42 there's nothing wrong with passing an
5:45 examination that's a legitimate thing
5:47 but to cheat to pass an examination
5:49 that's sin there's nothing wrong with
5:52 getting a promotion but to lie and
5:56 push and politic to get a promotion
6:00 that's wrong so temptation of it self is
6:04 not sinful it is not a sin to be tempted
6:06 our Lord was tempted and yet he was
6:08 sinless it is a sin to yield to
6:12 Temptation a temptation is simply an
6:17 opportunity to satisfy a legitimate need
6:19 in a wrong way outside the will of God
6:21 you see we were created with certain basic
6:23 basic
6:26 needs we have needs for food and eating
6:29 is a legitimate thing gluttony is sin
6:32 there is a a need for the satisfaction
6:35 of love people want to be needed and
6:38 loved there's a desire in our hearts to
6:41 succeed but all of these things are
6:43 opportunities for the
6:46 tempter to lead us to satisfy these
6:49 needs in the wrong
6:52 way now in this particular passage
6:56 Matthew chapter 4: 1-1 our Lord is facing
6:58 facing
7:00 Satan the devil the accuser the
7:03 slanderer the enemy the
7:05 adversary as you know you and I face
7:09 Temptation on three fronts the World the
7:11 Flesh and the
7:15 devil the world wants to entice us the
7:18 flesh wants to lead us
7:20 astray the devil of course wants to lead
7:22 us out of the will of God now I'm going
7:24 to make a statement that at first may
7:27 shock some of you but I believe it's
7:30 scripturally true want to a person first
7:34 becomes a Christian he fights tremendous
7:36 battles with the world and the
7:39 flesh then as he grows in the Lord and
7:42 learns to get victory over the world and
7:44 the flesh that's when the devil starts
7:47 to move in now the devil can use the
7:51 world and the devil can use the flesh
7:52 but may I say
7:56 this The Temptations that we Face from
8:00 Satan are on a different level
8:03 from The Temptations of the world and
8:05 the Flesh in fact there are some
8:08 Christians who have so yielded to the
8:09 world and the flesh the devil doesn't
8:11 have to pay much attention to them they
8:13 are tempting
8:17 themselves they are leading themselves
8:20 astray when Satan came to face the Lord
8:23 Jesus Christ there in the
8:26 wilderness he brought to the Lord Jesus
8:30 the kind of a battle
8:34 that I wonder if many of us have really
8:37 faced you see it doesn't take much for
8:40 us to sin Satan doesn't have to bring
8:43 all of his armies against most of
8:46 us uh we have a way of being so weak and
8:49 giving in our lord Jesus was not
8:51 attracted by the
8:54 world our lord Jesus was not infected In the
8:55 the
8:58 Flesh there was nothing in him that
9:00 could succumb to fleshly
9:03 appetites when Satan came to face the
9:05 Lord Jesus Christ he was working if you
9:09 excuse the term on a much higher level
9:12 this is why my friend as you grow in the
9:17 Lord you fight more difficult battles
9:19 you're not just fighting the appetites
9:22 of the flesh or the Ambitions of the
9:25 world you're fighting the attacks of the
9:27 devil and you come and say Pastor what
9:30 in the world is going on in my life I've
9:32 never faced this kind of thing before
9:35 and my first response is
9:37 congratulations it's wonderful that you
9:40 have graduated out of the
9:43 ABCs of Christian
9:46 conflict Satan realizes now that your
9:48 Christian life is so important and so
9:50 strategic he's got to fight you on a
9:53 higher level that's what he does here so
9:55 our thinking tonight is not going to be in
9:56 in
9:59 kindergarten I want you to ask the Holy
10:01 Spirit of God to Quicken my mind and
10:05 your mind so that we might Garner from these
10:06 these
10:08 verses the help that we
10:11 need now as I read this
10:15 passage I see that there are three Basic
10:22 Temptation essential number
10:28 one we must realize our position in
10:33 now someone may look at me at this point
10:34 and say what in the world are you
10:37 talking about my position in Jesus
10:39 Christ exactly
10:42 that you see when the Lord Jesus Christ
10:47 came into the Wilderness to face the
10:50 tempter and he fasted for 40 days and 40
10:54 nights and he had just come up from that
10:57 baptism experience with the holy spirit
11:00 of God coming upon him with the father
11:03 speaking to him and saying this is my
11:07 beloved Son in whom I'm well pleased
11:09 this is the setting in the background of
11:12 all of this now when the Lord Jesus
11:16 Christ came into the Wilderness he was
11:20 fulfilling three Old Testament
11:24 types that describ to us our position in
11:26 Jesus Christ let me say that again I
11:29 don't want you to miss it when our Lord
11:31 came Into the
11:36 Wilderness he was the last
11:39 Adam when our Lord came into the
11:43 Wilderness he was
11:45 Joshua when our Lord came into the
11:48 Wilderness he was
11:51 David you see these three men in the Old
11:57 Testament Adam Joshua David are all
11:59 identified with this experience let's
12:03 take them one by one Adam 1 Corinthians
12:08 15: 45 tells us that Jesus Christ is the
12:11 last Adam the first man
12:15 Adam was from the earth the last Adam
12:20 was from heaven now Adam was the head of
12:22 the old
12:25 creation and as such he was
12:29 tested Jesus Christ is the head of the
12:33 the new creation he's the last Adam the
12:37 head of a whole new
12:40 Humanity if you're saved tonight you are
12:44 in Jesus Christ and you are in a whole new
12:50 creation Now the picture here is one of
12:53 contrast the first Adam from the earth
12:57 the last Adam from Heaven the first Adam
13:01 tested in a beautiful
13:05 paradise the last Adam tested in a lonely
13:07 lonely
13:09 Wilderness the first Adam completely
13:13 surrounded by all the blessings of God
13:17 available to him the last Adam
13:25 failed he had everything going for him
13:29 and he failed the last Adam succeeded he
13:33 had everything going against him and he
13:37 succeeded the first Adam was a
13:40 thief and was cast out of
13:43 paradise the last Adam ultimately turned
13:47 to a thief and said today you'll be with
13:49 me in
13:52 Paradise now when Jesus Christ faced
13:55 Satan in the wilderness it was the last
13:59 Adam facing the old serpent who had
14:01 tempted the first
14:06 Adam but this time the news report was
14:11 Victory and when Jesus Christ won that
14:14 Victory he established himself as the
14:18 last Adam the head of a new creation
14:20 when he climaxed that Victory on the
14:23 cross and then took that Victory up to
14:27 heaven he established a whole new
14:30 Humanity the body of Christ
14:32 you've heard me say this many times when
14:34 you were born the first time you were
14:38 born in Adam a
14:41 loser when you were born the second time
14:45 you were born into Jesus Christ a
14:49 winner now if you face Satan's
14:51 Temptations on your
14:53 own you'll
14:56 fail there's nothing that the old Adam
15:00 gave you that'll ever help you succeed
15:02 oh the spirit is willing but the flesh is
15:03 is
15:07 weak it's only what we have in the new
15:10 creation and so you dare not face Satan
15:12 in your first
15:15 birth you've got to face Satan and
15:19 identify yourself with Jesus Christ in
15:22 the new creation that's why I say the
15:25 first essential for victory is to
15:28 realize your position in Christ and say
15:31 to Satan you are talking to one who is
15:35 in the new creation I am in Jesus Christ
15:37 he has ascended far above all
15:40 principalities and powers and every name
15:43 that is named and he has defeated
15:47 you this is what the theologians call
15:49 identification with
15:52 Christ when Pastor Smith and I were at
15:56 the nrb convention in Washington DC I
15:58 had ducked into my room to get some
16:01 material to duck out again and punched
16:03 on the television just to see what was
16:05 going on in
16:07 Congress and Hubert Humphrey was on the
16:10 screen I may have told you this and they
16:13 were interviewing some of the
16:16 appointments for the new Administration
16:17 and I was just there long enough to hear
16:20 Senator Humphrey make a profound
16:24 statement he said this to the
16:28 appointy where you sit referring to
16:32 Congress where you sit determines how you
16:34 you
16:36 stand and I was all alone in my room but
16:39 I said hooray Hubert
16:43 Humphrey I'll use that in a
16:47 sermon but it's true where you sit
16:48 determines how you stand if you're
16:50 sitting in death row you'll stand one
16:53 way if you're sitting behind that desk
16:56 in the Oval Office you'll stand another
17:01 way now we are in Jesus Christ seated in
17:04 Christ ascended in Christ that's the way
17:07 we Face the wicked one now the second
17:09 type was that of
17:13 Joshua remember now years and years
17:16 before the nation of Israel led by
17:19 Joshua had come into the Jordan River
17:22 come out of the Jordan River from the
17:25 Wilderness to enter into their
17:28 inheritance they had experienced death
17:31 bar and Resurrection to get into their
17:33 inheritance Jesus Christ had just gone
17:37 in to the Jordan River he had experience
17:39 death burial and Resurrection then he
17:42 goes into the Wilderness to do what to
17:43 claim The
17:46 Inheritance Israel led by Joshua came
17:49 out of the Wilderness to enter into
17:51 their inheritance and God gave it to
17:53 them Jesus Christ came into the
17:56 Wilderness to defeat Satan to claim his
17:59 inheritance in other words when Satan
18:03 tempts us we do not face him as those
18:07 who are losers we have entered into our
18:11 spiritual inheritance through our Joshua Jesus
18:13 Jesus
18:16 Christ now to some of you this means
18:18 nothing because you have no spiritual
18:21 concept of what it means to have an
18:23 inheritance in Christ then you ought to read
18:24 read
18:27 Ephesians just saturate yourself with
18:30 Ephesians 6th chapter read it and read
18:33 it and read it and realize that you have
18:34 been blessed with all spiritual
18:37 blessings in the Heavenly places in
18:40 Christ Jesus and Satan can't offer you
18:44 anything what's he going to offer
18:47 you in Jesus Christ you have died to the old
18:48 old
18:51 life the Wilderness is behind you in
18:54 Jesus Christ you've been raised to walk
18:56 in newness of life in Jesus Christ
18:58 you've entered into your inheritance
19:03 Jesus is our Joshua jehoshua Jehovah is
19:06 salvation he has led us through the
19:09 Jordan into our inheritance what can the
19:10 devil offer
19:13 you when you've got all spiritual
19:17 blessings in Christ and everything else
19:20 that you'll ever
19:23 need you see for Satan to come and tempt
19:27 a Believer is like a um Clark Street
19:29 Street
19:32 hobo going up to the president of the
19:33 bank and saying I got something I want
19:37 to give you what could he ever give him
19:40 and so we realize our position in Christ
19:41 we're in the new
19:44 creation we are in our
19:48 inheritance now David was also
19:51 there David is a type of our Lord Jesus
19:53 Christ they were both born in Bethlehem
19:56 both were rejected by their
19:59 Brethren both were uh
20:02 David was chased he was not slain but
20:05 they would like to have killed him Jesus
20:07 was but the interesting thing about
20:09 David is one day he stepped out into the
20:11 Wilderness and there was a
20:14 giant and for 40
20:17 days that big mouth giant had been
20:19 challenging the army of
20:23 Israel and so David which means Beloved
20:26 the good old Hebrew name Beloved this is
20:29 my beloved Son
20:33 David steps up he gets five
20:37 Stones he chooses one of them and he
20:40 slings it at that giant he stuns him
20:43 down he falls and then David takes the
20:46 Giant's sword and cuts off his head
20:49 David met the Giant in the wilderness
20:51 and defeated
20:54 him now our Lord Jesus Christ
20:57 beloved steps into the Wilderness and
21:01 Meets the Giant of GI sence Satan he too
21:02 has five
21:06 Stones Genesis Exodus Leviticus Numbers and
21:07 and
21:09 Deuteronomy you know where he got
21:12 them Hebrews chapter
21:17 10 I Delight to do thy will oh God thy
21:22 law is within my heart our Lord didn't
21:24 carry a strong concordance with him in the
21:25 the
21:27 wilderness he didn't have a little
21:30 scripture Memory package
21:32 when he came into this
21:35 world sacrifice and offering wouldest
21:38 thou not a body hast thou prepared me I
21:41 Delight to do thy will oh my God thy law
21:43 is within my heart he had five smooth
21:46 Stones Genesis Exodus Leviticus Numbers
21:50 Deuteronomy he chose one of them
21:53 Deuteronomy and let the enemy have it in
21:56 other words we are in the New Creation
22:00 that's Adam we are in in our
22:04 inheritance that's Joshua we are in the
22:07 place of Victory we are in his kingdom
22:11 God used David to establish the kingdom
22:13 now my Christian friend when you face
22:17 the devil don't let him fool you into
22:19 thinking you're working from a position
22:22 of defeat we are working from a position
22:24 of Victory we're in the new creation we
22:27 are in The Inheritance we are in the Kingdom
22:30 Kingdom
22:32 you know Paul got a hold of this I'm
22:34 thankful Paul did I've been reading over
22:36 in Colossians I want to do a series of
22:38 sermons on Colossians sometime it's one
22:40 of the most dangerous books in the New
22:42 Testament people don't really believe it
22:43 Colossians chapter
22:48 1 verse 12 giving thanks unto the father
22:51 who has made us fit to be partakers of
22:55 the inheritance of the Saints in light
22:57 who has delivered us from the power of
23:00 darkness and has has translated us into
23:04 the kingdom of his dear son there it is
23:07 over in Chapter 2 of Colossians and
23:10 verse 15 and having spoiled
23:13 principalities and Powers he made a show
23:17 of them openly triumphing over them in
23:20 it in the cross that's what David did
23:23 David made a show of Goliath publicly he
23:26 made a fool out of
23:30 him so when Satan comes to tempt you you
23:32 must realize your position in Christ you
23:35 are in the New Creation don't send the
23:38 old Adam to answer the door send the
23:40 last Adam to answer the
23:43 door you're in the inheritance say Satan
23:46 what can you give me anything you've got
23:48 I've got
23:51 better we are already in the Kingdom not
23:54 the millennial Kingdom obviously we are
23:57 in his spiritual Kingdom and he has
23:59 delivered us from the power of Darkness
24:01 he's translated us into the kingdom of
24:04 his dear son the reason we fail is we
24:06 don't really believe what our position
24:07 is in
24:10 Christ now there's a second
24:13 essential not only must we realize our
24:18 position in Christ but we must recognize Satan's
24:19 Satan's
24:22 tactics and once again oil the Machinery
24:24 of your soul
24:27 because what I'm going to feed into the
24:30 computer will take some time
24:33 for understanding and
24:36 meditation we must recognize Satan's
24:39 tactics now what are his tactics number
24:42 one he wants to
24:46 break your fellowship with the
24:48 father now just look at this situation
24:50 in Matthew chapter
24:54 4 our lord Jesus had been
24:57 baptized he entered into the waters when
24:59 he came came up out of the waters the
25:03 Holy Spirit came down like a dove and
25:06 the father spoke and said this is my
25:10 beloved Son in whom I'm well
25:13 pleased now in that
25:17 baptism three crises
25:21 occurred think with me now number one
25:24 Jesus said to John the Baptist baptized
25:26 me John the Baptist said oh I have need
25:29 to be baptized of you and Jesus said
25:32 permit it to be so now for in this
25:36 manner death burial and Resurrection we
25:38 God the Father God the son God the Holy
25:39 Spirit we are going to fulfill all
25:42 righteousness the baptism of Jesus
25:46 Christ was an Evidence a picture an
25:48 illustration of what he came to do he
25:51 came to experience death burial and
25:53 Resurrection to bring about
25:56 righteousness in other words his baptism
25:58 was a declaration of his call I have
26:00 come I've been sent by the father we are
26:04 going together to bring about
26:07 righteousness crisis number two the Holy
26:09 Spirit came down and from that point on
26:12 the holy spirit of God is going to guide
26:14 and Empower our Lord Jesus Christ now he
26:17 was conceived of the Holy Spirit he was
26:20 filled with the Holy Spirit this was not
26:22 the first occasion for the Holy Spirit
26:26 to uh have contact with the Lord Jesus
26:28 obviously for he was the perfect son of
26:30 of God but he was beginning now his
26:32 public Ministry and it's as though the
26:34 spirit of God is saying all right let's
26:37 remember now together we are going to do
26:39 this crisis number three the father
26:42 spoke and assured him of his love now
26:44 here are three important factors the
26:47 work that he had to do the spirit who
26:50 was going to guide him in this work the
26:52 will of God the work of God the will of
26:54 God and in the Assurance of the love of
26:57 God this is my beloved Son do you know
26:59 my friend that
27:03 nowhere in the four gospels does God
27:06 call anybody else
27:08 beloved but when you get to the Book of
27:11 Romans and the church Epistles he starts
27:14 calling the Saints
27:16 beloved accepted in the Beloved you see
27:18 when you're in Christ you're in the
27:20 Beloved and so you're
27:22 beloved now what was Satan trying to do
27:25 he wanted to break the Lord Jesus
27:27 relationship with the father think with
27:29 me now
27:32 the father had said this is my beloved
27:35 Son what did Satan say he loves
27:39 you I heard 40 days ago from Heaven that
27:42 he loves you how come you're
27:45 hungry has the devil ever said that to
27:48 you how do you know God loves
27:51 you you know God loves you because the
27:54 word of God tells you how did Jesus know
27:56 God loved him by
27:58 circumstances the circum cumstances were
28:03 against him by feeling he was
28:05 hungry how did Jesus know that his
28:09 father loved him the father said so in
28:12 the word how do you know God loves you
28:13 all you say things are going so great
28:14 just wait till
28:21 Tuesday this is where the devil trips up the
28:23 the
28:26 Saints oh God loves me I can feel it in
28:27 my heart then you have one of those
28:29 black days when you feel like you
28:31 haven't even got a
28:34 heart oh I know God loves me things are
28:37 going so well and then the rug is pulled
28:38 out from under you and you start to
28:40 topple and
28:44 fall that's where Saints get bitter they
28:45 say I'm through with the Lord and I'm
28:47 through with the church I'm through with
28:49 God's people I'm
28:52 through Satan says I got another
28:55 one you see he wants you to believe God
28:56 doesn't love you and he'll use
28:59 circumstances to do it how did Jesus
29:02 know God loved him the word of God told
29:04 him how do you know God loves you the
29:12 you now the devil wants us to break our
29:16 relationship with the father and each of
29:19 these temptations that he brought had
29:20 something to do with our Lord's
29:23 relationship to the
29:26 father um oh the spirit of God is
29:28 guiding you
29:30 why don't you jump off and see what God will
29:31 will
29:34 do see don't don't live by faith live by
29:37 chance oh so you're going to bring
29:39 righteousness in ah but if you do that
29:41 you have to go to a cross why don't you
29:44 just fall down and worship me that'll
29:45 take care of
29:48 it by the way the Greek verb there means
29:50 just to do it once just worship me once
29:52 not all the rest of your life just just
29:54 do it once how many times people have
29:58 heard Satan say that just do it once
30:00 he wants to break your relationship with
30:04 the father and so he attacks the word of
30:06 God now some of you think I'm a fanatic
30:08 and in this respect I am if you mean by
30:11 a fanatic an Enthusiast I'm a fanatic
30:13 I'm a fanatic for the word of
30:15 God quite frankly I get a little bit
30:18 disturbed when I find the saints of God
30:19 having time for everything but the word
30:22 of God what are Satan's tactics number
30:25 one he wants to break your relationship
30:26 with a father he doesn't love you he
30:28 won't guide you he won't take care of
30:30 you he's asking you to do a hard thing
30:32 go to the Cross I've got an easier
30:41 word Satan loves to attack the word
30:44 because this is your only connection
30:46 with the father well you say I have the
30:48 Holy Spirit yes we'll talk about that
30:50 and the Lord's up in heaven that's right
30:52 but this is what gives you your
30:55 connection Jesus said the words that I
30:57 speak they are spirit and they are light
30:59 and so if I neglect the word of
31:07 me now Satan knows how to use
31:10 circumstances he's no
31:13 dumbbell our lord Jesus had just
31:16 experienced a tremendous Mountaintop
31:19 experience Heaven had opened God the
31:22 father had spoken the Spirit came down a
31:31 then right after that the battle begins
31:34 I've noticed in my Bible that many
31:36 times after the
31:39 Mountaintop comes the valley somebody
31:43 here tonight is floating on cloud n
31:45 spiritually oh you're saying I've
31:48 arrived now boy this is wonderful watch
31:51 out because Satan is just waiting now
31:53 our Lord didn't make that mistake he was
31:55 ready for the devil when he
31:58 came essential number one we must
32:01 realize our position in Christ essential
32:04 number two we must recognize Satan's
32:06 tactics he wants to break your
32:09 fellowship with the father he does this
32:11 by using the
32:15 word he attacks the word of God oh if
32:17 God loves you why are you hungry he
32:20 takes away from the word of God when he
32:24 quoted Psalm 91 he left out some of it
32:26 then he substitutes his own lie oh he
32:28 says Fall Down and Worship me you see
32:31 God the father had promised all the
32:33 kingdoms of the world to God the son
32:35 read Psalm
32:37 2 read Psalm
32:40 22 God the father had said to God the
32:43 son because of your death on the cross
32:46 your Resurrection you will one day bring
32:48 righteousness to the world and I will
32:51 give you the kingdoms of this world
32:53 Satan said oh I got a better offer for
32:55 you now here's the way he attacks the
32:58 word first he questions the word oh oh
33:01 God loves you you're hungry then he
33:04 denies the word jump off and see if God
33:06 will keep his promise and then he
33:08 substitutes his own
33:11 lie Fall Down and Worship me by the way
33:12 there's nothing new about that he did
33:15 the same thing to
33:17 Eve when he came to Eve first he
33:21 questioned the word ye hath God said
33:24 then he denied the word you shall not
33:26 surely die and then he substituted his
33:29 own lie the day that you eat you'll be
33:32 as God have you ever fallen for
33:36 that I
33:38 have when he's caught me at that moment
33:41 when I really wasn't recognizing what he's
33:42 he's
33:45 doing and I've paid for it I wouldn't
33:47 tell you that except you've done the same
33:48 same
33:52 thing there's a third
33:55 essential we must realize the resources
33:58 that God gives to us and utilize
34:01 them now there are three of
34:03 them there are three tremendous
34:06 spiritual resources that you can use
34:08 when you fight the devil you know what
34:09 they are they're right here in the
34:11 passage number
34:14 one the spirit of
34:17 God the indwelling spirit of God then
34:21 was Jesus led up by the spirit Into the
34:23 Wilderness I was reading one of the
34:25 commentaries on this passage and the
34:27 commentator made a long to-do about the
34:28 fact that when Jesus went into the
34:31 Wilderness he was alone he wasn't alone
34:33 he wasn't oh there were no humans there
34:36 with him but he wasn't alone the spirit
34:37 was with
34:40 him the Blessed third person of the
34:42 Trinity was there and God gave the
34:45 spirit to Jesus Christ without
34:48 measure filled with the Holy Spirit now
34:55 devil as you read through the gospels
34:57 you discover that it was in the power of
34:59 the Holy spirit that Jesus Christ fought
35:02 the devil you're in Matthew CH 4 just
35:05 turn a few pages to Matthew
35:08 12 our Lord cast a demon out and they
35:15 Satan and the Lord answered them in
35:19 verse 26 of Matthew 12 if Satan cast out
35:22 Satan he's divided against himself how
35:24 then shall his kingdom stand Satan's got
35:28 a kingdom and if I by beel above that's
35:30 one of the names for Satan cast out
35:33 demons by whom do your sons cast them
35:35 out therefore they shall be your judges
35:39 but if I cast out demons by the spirit of
35:40 of
35:45 God then the kingdom of God is come unto
35:47 you what's he
35:50 saying oh this is so important the first
35:53 word Jesus spoke to the devil was not
35:56 God it was
35:59 man if if thou be the Son of God since
36:01 you are the Son of God turn these stones
36:04 into bread use your divine power to
36:07 satisfy your own needs and Jesus
36:08 answered and said
36:13 man not God man now hear this the Lord
36:17 Jesus Christ defeated Satan using the
36:19 same spiritual resources any man or
36:22 woman can use I've had people say to me
36:25 now Pastor don't tell me about Matthew 4
36:28 that was God I mean he was the sinless
36:30 Son of God he was perfect you can't
36:33 expect me to defeat Satan when I'm not
36:35 sinless and perfect but Jesus didn't say
36:38 hey satan I'm coming to you as God he said
36:40 said
36:42 man you you like to use that as an
36:45 excuse don't you I do too well Lord you
36:47 can't expect me to do any better I'm
36:49 just a
36:51 man God says I know that I know things
36:53 you don't even
36:58 know but Jesus didn't face Satan as God
37:01 he used the same Divine resources that
37:04 you and I can use and the first one was
37:07 the indwelling spirit of God it was
37:09 through the power of the holy spirit
37:12 because he used secondly the inspired
37:15 word of God and the word of God is the
37:18 sword of the spirit when the holy spirit
37:22 of God fills us then the spirit of God
37:25 can take the word of God which is the
37:27 sword of the spirit and we can fight
37:28 fight the
37:31 devil let me tell you one way you can
37:33 know when you're filled with the Holy
37:37 Spirit you find scripture coming to your
37:40 heart and mind in a remarkable computerized
37:42 computerized
37:45 way when you find yourself in a
37:47 situation and you've yielded to the Holy
37:50 Spirit the Holy Spirit brings the word
37:53 that's his job he's the great reminder
37:56 he shall teach you all things he shall
37:58 bring to your reme what I've taught you
38:01 he won't remind you what you haven't
38:03 learned don't expect the devil to teach
38:05 you something you've never studied the
38:07 the Holy Spirit to teach you something
38:09 you've never studied to defeat the Devil
38:12 no the holy spirit of God reminds us and
38:14 when you're filled with the spirit one
38:17 of the evidences among others is your
38:19 mind and heart become like a spiritual
38:21 computer and the word of God just comes
38:24 to you that's what happened to the Lord
38:27 Jesus in Ephesians 6 Paul said says now
38:29 you want to defeat the Devil here's how
38:31 to do it put on the armor and then take
38:33 the sword of the spirit which is the
38:35 word of God now Jesus chose to use
38:38 Deuteronomy I must confess to you I've
38:39 not memorized too many verses out of
38:42 Deuteronomy Deuteronomy was was Jesus
38:45 favorite book he quoted from Deuteronomy
38:48 more than any other Old Testament book
38:50 and yet I must confess to you I have
38:53 never really used Deuteronomy to fight
38:57 the devil but Jesus did I should too
39:00 and Satan said to him turn these stones
39:02 into bread and Jesus quoted from
39:04 Deuteronomy and said man shall not live
39:06 by bread
39:09 alone but by every word that proceeds
39:10 from the mouth of God in other words
39:12 Satan was saying hey separate the
39:14 spiritual from the physical I mean live
39:16 your physical life and separate it from
39:18 your spiritual life Jesus said oh no I'd
39:21 rather be hungry in the will of God then
39:24 fall out of the will of God but a man's
39:26 got to live who said whoever said a man
39:29 had to live
39:30 course it say in the Bible that a person
39:31 has to
39:34 live we're better off dying in the will
39:36 of God than living out of the will of
39:39 God and so Jesus just took the sword of
39:42 the spirit and used it on Satan now the
39:44 devil says okay two can play at that
39:46 game so he quotes scripture you notice
39:48 that he says it is
39:51 written don't ever pit your Bible memory
39:55 work against his it is written he shall
39:58 give his angels charge concerning thee
39:59 and in their hands they shall bear thee
40:02 up lest at any time thou Dash thy foot
40:03 against a stone of course the devil's
40:06 such a shrewd one he he
40:08 misquoted Psalm 91 says he shall give
40:10 his angels charge over thee to keep thee
40:12 in all thy
40:14 ways when the child of God is in the
40:17 will of God he has the protection of God
40:19 but don't you tempt
40:22 God you know what Jesus did the most
40:25 important word in verse 7 is
40:27 again Jesus said to him it is written written
40:28 written
40:30 again you see our Lord had said up here
40:33 man shall live by every word you know if
40:35 you just take verses out of their
40:37 setting you can prove anything every one
40:40 of the false Cults is based on
40:42 scripture many of the messes that
40:44 Christians have gotten into they can
40:46 find bible verses to back it up you know
40:49 why they don't see all of the scripture
40:52 and my Lord says again it is written
40:54 you've got to balance scripture with
40:57 scripture that's what separates the men
40:58 from the
41:01 boys an infant Christian doesn't know
41:03 how to balance scripture with
41:06 scripture and so our Lord uses the sword
41:09 once again then Satan says well let's go
41:11 up and I'll show you all the kingdoms
41:13 and he shows them all the kingdoms did
41:16 you ever notice that geography is
41:19 no guarantee of
41:21 victory in the wilderness turn stones
41:24 into Bread on top of the temple jump off
41:26 on a high mountain getting closer to
41:28 Heaven here's all the
41:30 kingdoms geography has nothing to do
41:33 with it I have faced some of the worst
41:36 Temptations from Satan I've ever faced
41:39 while sitting in my study praying over
41:42 and studying the word of
41:44 God and I've had some of the greatest
41:46 victories in my life in areas where
41:49 you'd think Satan was really in
41:51 control geography has nothing to do with
41:53 it it's the
41:55 heart Satan says here are all the
41:57 kingdoms and once again the sword comes
42:00 out he quotes from Deuteronomy 6:13 Thou
42:02 shalt Worship the Lord thy God and him
42:04 only shalt thou serve and Satan said I
42:06 didn't say anything about service I just
42:08 asked for worship and Jesus said
42:11 whatever you worship you
42:13 serve you worship money you'll serve
42:15 money you worship the devil you'll serve
42:18 the devil the indwelling spirit of God
42:22 the inspired word of God now there's a
42:24 third resource that we have and I must
42:30 Jesus didn't have this resource that we
42:34 have he was making it possible the
42:39 interceding Son of God do you know why
42:42 Jesus was tempted among other things
42:44 that he might know exactly what you're going
42:45 going
42:47 through he knows what we're going
42:50 through when you're discouraged and
42:53 Satan comes and says hey pull some kind
42:53 of a
42:57 trick why don't you take a shortcut why
42:59 should you be
43:02 crucified you can come to him and say
43:05 Lord do you ever feel like this he says
43:08 yes I felt like that don't get the idea
43:10 that Satan finished all the Temptations
43:12 at that point and our Lord was never
43:15 tempted again these three Temptations
43:18 cover each area of testing but our Lord
43:21 faced Temptations all during his Earthly
43:22 life he said to his disciples you are
43:25 those who have been with me in my
43:27 Temptations we better look quickly at a
43:29 couple of verses in Hebrews just to
43:32 encourage us as we go our way Hebrews chap
43:34 chap
43:38 2 verses 16 through
43:41 18 for verily he took not on him the
43:43 nature of angels but he took on him the
43:46 Seed of Abraham he came as a Jew
43:48 wherefore in all things it behooved him
43:51 to be made like his Brethren why that he
43:55 might be a merciful and faithful high
43:59 priest in things paining to God to make
44:02 reconciliation or propitiation for the
44:04 sins of the people now look at Verse 18
44:07 for in that he himself hath suffered
44:12 being tempted he is able to help those
44:14 that are tempted and you turn the page
44:17 over to Hebrews chapter 4 how many times
44:20 we've had to look at verses 15 and 16
44:22 for we have not an high priest who
44:25 cannot be touched with the feeling of
44:27 our infirmities but was in all All
44:30 Points tempted like as we are yet
44:34 without sin Let Us therefore come boldly
44:37 not timidly under the throne of grace
44:40 that we may obtain mercy and find Grace
44:42 to help in the time of need that little
44:45 greek Construction in the time of need
44:47 is um an idiomatic expression in the
44:51 nick of time to find Grace to help in
44:52 the nick of
44:55 time you see you want to store up your
44:57 grace for next Thursday oh boy next
44:58 Thursday I'm going through something
45:01 don't store it up it won't be there God
45:04 gives you the grace when you need it and
45:06 so when we're tempted we can come to the
45:09 interceding Son of God and we can say oh
45:11 thou blessed Lord Jesus you know what
45:13 I'm going through you've been through
45:15 this furnace you've been through this
45:17 battle and he says I know just how you
45:19 feel and I know how much you can take
45:21 and I'm going to give you the grace and
45:29 these then I think are the essentials
45:33 for victory over the devil victory over
45:35 the Flesh and the world that's something
45:38 else but when the Devil comes and even
45:42 uses the Bible to try to lead you
45:46 astray here's how we face him we realize
45:49 our position in Christ in the New
45:53 Creation in The Inheritance in the
45:56 Kingdom we recognize his tactics he
45:58 wants to break our fellowship with the
46:00 father and he does it through the word
46:02 God doesn't love you God won't care for
46:06 you God's asking too much of
46:09 you and we must utilize the resources
46:12 God gives to us the indwelling spirit of
46:15 God the inspired word of
46:18 God the interceding Son of
46:21 God in other words if we fail it's not God's
46:23 God's
46:26 fault if we fail it's our own fault we choose
46:28 choose
46:31 not to lay hold of all that God has for
46:34 us which leads me to conclude with this
46:37 brief but important word you don't get
46:39 ready to fight the devil when he jumps at
46:40 at
46:43 you always be
46:46 prepared we don't have time when that
46:49 Temptation comes to pause for 3 hours of
46:52 prayer we don't have time to get out our
46:54 concordance and find a
46:58 verse every hour of the day we are
47:00 preparing for that time when he assaults
47:03 us he's waiting for that time he's
47:06 watching for that time when we think
47:07 we're the
47:11 strongest and then that battle comes
47:13 which means be
47:15 prepared know the word of
47:18 God put it in your
47:20 heart Thy word have I hid in my heart
47:23 that I might not sin against thee be
47:26 yielded to the Holy Spirit and keep
47:28 contact with your intercessor your
47:30 wonderful high priest in heaven than
47:34 when Satan comes with all of his diabolical
47:37 diabolical
47:39 subtleties you won't be
47:47 victory gracious father we're thankful
47:51 that in Jesus Christ we already have
47:55 Victory forgive us when we have desired defeat
47:57 defeat
47:59 forgive us when we have disgraced your
48:02 name and denied you of
48:04 Glory help us father to grow in our
48:08 discernment to know when the old serpent
48:09 is about to
48:12 attack may we so know our Bibles and be
48:15 so filled with the spirit and so prayed
48:18 up that we'll recognize when he's
48:21 working oh father I pray that you'll
48:23 help those of us who are part of this
