0:03 hi everyone mina-san konnichiwa would
0:06 you like to learn how to talk about the
0:10 environment in English the environment
0:12 is a very important topic that has been
0:15 in the news a lot lately and you can
0:17 hear things such as global warming
0:20 climate change and so on
0:24 welcome to Jen's jugo my name is Jen and
0:28 today I'm going to teach you some useful
0:30 vocabulary that you can use to talk
0:32 about the environment this is vocabulary
0:35 that you can hear on the news a lot
0:38 vocabulary that has been at the center
0:40 of some political platforms and
0:44 vocabulary that is usually on tests like
0:48 the IELTS test or TOEFL test so get
0:51 ready to learn about the environment
0:54 when we talk about the environment in
0:57 English what we are referring to is the
1:01 world the globe and how nature and
1:05 natural processes are being affected by
1:08 humans okay so when we talk about the
1:11 environment it specifically is talking
1:14 about how humans are interacting with
1:17 and changing the atmosphere and changing
1:20 the world around them so environment is
1:24 a noun and there are two adjectives that
1:28 we often use with the word environment
1:31 one of them is environmental
1:34 environmental is an adjective connected
1:37 to the environment we specifically use
1:41 this word with environmental issues
1:44 talking about the problems that exist
1:47 within the environment and this is where
1:50 you will hear the words such as global
1:52 warming or climate change or pollution
1:55 the other adjective that we make from
1:58 environment is environmentally
2:01 environmentally is also an adjective
2:04 from environment and we specifically use
2:06 this adjective when we talk about
2:09 something being environmentally friendly
2:12 right so recycling is
2:15 usually seen as environmentally friendly
2:18 something that is good for the
2:20 environment there's one other noun
2:23 connected to environment as well and
2:27 this is an environmentalist
2:30 environmentalist an environmentalist is
2:33 a person who really cares about the
2:35 environment and wants to do all that
2:37 they can to raise awareness of
2:41 environmental issues a very famous
2:43 environmentalist who's been in the news
2:47 lately is the sweetest girl Greta
2:49 Sundberg I'll talk to a little bit more
2:52 about her later in the lesson one of the
2:55 biggest environmental issues these days
2:58 is pollution pollution is what is
3:01 contributing to a lot of major
3:05 environmental issues pollution basically
3:08 means all of the waste the garbage the
3:11 rubbish that is being produced some
3:13 major things that are connected to
3:18 pollution are smog okay smog is similar
3:21 to fog but basically it is pollution
3:24 thick pollution that is in the air and
3:26 it makes it hard for you to breathe it
3:29 makes the air quality decrease another
3:32 environmental issue is deforestation
3:36 deforestation is cutting down many many
3:37 trees you might have heard the
3:40 expression clear-cutting which is when
3:42 forest companies wood companies go and
3:45 they just cut down huge areas of forest
3:47 which is very bad for the environment
3:50 because we need trees another issue is
3:54 acid rain all of the air pollution that
3:56 we are creating is getting sucked into
3:59 the water cycle so when it rains there
4:02 are chemicals such as carbon dioxide and
4:05 acid in the rain which is causing things
4:09 to break down to deteriorate which is
4:11 bad for the environment one of the other
4:13 really big environmental issues caused
4:17 from pollution is climate change
4:21 okay so climate change means that there
4:23 is so much pollution in the environment
4:27 that the weather all around the world is
4:30 changing temperatures are becoming much
4:34 colder or much hotter than usual usually
4:38 much hotter than the type of climate
4:40 change where the weather is becoming
4:43 hotter and hotter all the time is called
4:48 global warming global warming is all
4:50 across the world temperatures are rising
4:53 icebergs are melting sea levels are
4:55 rising and it's having a major impact on
4:59 humans and also animals natural habitats
5:01 are being destroyed and there are more
5:05 disasters occurring as a result habitats
5:09 means a place where someone lives so the
5:11 natural habitat of animals is being
5:13 destroyed by climate change global
5:16 warming and pollution scientifically
5:19 global warming is occurring as a result
5:23 of toxic toxic means poisonous toxic
5:26 gases being released into the
5:27 environment which is causing these
5:31 changes so some of these toxic gases we
5:34 often refer to them as greenhouse gases
5:37 and one of the biggest greenhouse gases
5:41 is caused by carbon dioxide carbon
5:45 dioxide is produced when fossil fuels
5:48 are being burned fossil fuels means a
5:52 type of energy natural energy such as
5:56 gas or oil that is being used so when
5:58 you're using things like gas or oil they
6:01 are called fossil fuel and when you use
6:04 them they are putting gas into the
6:07 atmosphere which is creating pollution I
6:09 mentioned that one of the biggest gases
6:11 that is part of these greenhouse gases
6:15 is carbon dioxide and this is where the
6:18 expression carbon footprint comes in
6:20 maybe you have heard the expression
6:23 carbon footprint in the news
6:26 so footprint is when you are walking
6:30 specifically on sand or mud you leave a
6:33 impression of your foot in the soil
6:36 right it's a footprint you're leaving
6:39 that footprint behind as you continue on
6:42 your way so this is where the idea of
6:45 carbon footprint comes from carbon
6:49 footprint means the amount of pollution
6:53 that you are personally responsible for
6:56 if the amount of fossil fuels gases and
6:58 other pollution that you are personally
7:01 creating is called your carbon footprint
7:04 because it is what you are leaving
7:08 behind the results of your actions are
7:11 being left behind for future generations
7:14 your actions affect the environment for
7:17 everyone so one way to reduce your
7:20 carbon footprint is by walking or riding
7:25 your bicycle instead of taking a car I
7:27 mentioned before the environmental
7:29 activists from Sweden the young 16 year
7:30 old girl
7:34 Greta Sundberg she refuses to fly in an
7:36 airplane because she wants to reduce her
7:39 carbon footprint right she's very
7:42 concerned about how much her actions are
7:44 impacting the environment through that
7:48 example of not taking an airplane and
7:51 using a boat instead not taking a car
7:53 but walking or riding your bike or
7:57 taking public transit instead these
8:00 actions help to reduce emissions to
8:04 reduce something needs to make it less
8:06 so specifically you are making the
8:10 amount of gas that you produce less the
8:12 amount of fossil fuels that you are
8:15 burning should be decreased many
8:18 companies should work harder to reduce
8:21 emissions another great way to reduce
8:25 emissions is by using renewable energy
8:28 renewable energy specifically refers to
8:31 types of energy that you are using that
8:33 are not depleted they're not
8:36 used up when you are using them so
8:39 renewable energy includes things such as
8:43 solar power and wind power a non
8:46 renewable sources include things such as
8:51 fossil fuels like coal or oil or gas so
8:53 why should we care about all these
8:55 environmental issues why should we
8:59 listen to environmentalists this is
9:02 because your actions today have an
9:05 impact impact means effect on right so
9:08 an impact or an effect on not just
9:12 people now but also future generations
9:14 the people who are continuing to live
9:18 after you in addition it also affects
9:22 and has an impact on wildlife animals
9:25 and plants many animals have become
9:28 endangered as a result of pollution
9:32 endangered means that they are in danger
9:36 of becoming extinct some species of
9:39 plants and animals have already become
9:43 completely extinct extinct means that
9:45 they no longer exist they are gone
9:48 forever if you don't want to see more
9:50 plants and animals becoming endangered
9:53 and extinct if you don't want the human
9:55 race to become extinct you need to care
9:59 about the environment in Canada we have
10:02 something called the 3 R's that are
10:05 taught to children in school and these 3 R's
10:05 R's
10:08 are what you should remember to try and
10:11 think about protecting the environment
10:18 the 3 R's are reduce reuse and recycle
10:23 so reduce use less of things single-use
10:27 plastics bad idea use a cloth bag
10:29 instead of a plastic bag when you go to
10:32 the grocery store reduce the second R is
10:35 reuse this means that when something is
10:38 finished don't just throw it away find
10:41 another use for it see how you can really
10:42 really
10:46 use that item and the third R is recycle
10:49 don't just put paper and plastic and
10:52 cardboard in the garbage in most places
10:55 there is a special recycling area for
10:59 those items so today you learned a lot
11:02 of different vocabulary all about the
11:05 environment hopefully this vocabulary
11:07 will help you to understand the news
11:09 more understand some political
11:11 discussions which may be happening
11:14 around you and if you're taking a test
11:17 like IELTS or TOEFL this vocabulary will
11:21 probably most definitely be on that test
11:24 so I recommend reviewing the vocabulary
11:27 from today's lesson and now it's time
11:31 for question of the day today's question
11:35 is what can you do to save and protect
11:38 the environment what can you do to
11:42 reduce your carbon footprint let me know
11:44 what actions you can take in the
