over 10 years ago I made the biggest
mistake of my entire competitive career
it was my third year playing competitive
Pokémon and I was feeling hot coming off
a second place at the last year's World
Championships using my favorite Pokemon
exeggutor I was convinced that this year
was going to be the year that I won it
all and I plan to do it with a team so
out there so creative that nobody would
have anything to stop it so I rolled up
to the 2013 Pokémon World Championships
with this
Abomination by far the worst team I've
ever built and arguably one of the worst
teams any player has ever brought to a
World Championships I somehow managed to
squeak out three wins to go with my
three losses but despite the shockingly
decent result of 25th in the world I
would go on to regret using this awful
collection of Pokémon for the rest of my
life now the team I brought might not
look that bad if you're used to single
battles but Pokemon like glore hipon and
regist steel were never used in
competitive Pokémon for the simple
reason that they can't do any damage I
had effectively tried to build a stall
team in a format where stall was
basically impossible to pull off and of
course there is one Pokemon on my
monster piece that is almost never used
regardless of the format Magmar not
Magmortar Magmar what on Earth was I
thinking bringing a Pokémon like Magmar
to the World Championships well there
was a method to my mad
Magmar is able to hold the eite item
making it exceptionally tanky it has the
ability flame body meaning anytime it's
hit with a contact move it has a pretty
decent chance to burn and it can use
helping hand to boost its teammates
damage output but none of this is enough
to justify using Magmar over the
plethora of better Pokémon that exist
however there is one more move that
Magmar learned back in 2013 that allowed
it to do something that few other
Pokémon could do in the spin-off game
Pokémon XD certain Pokemon could learn
specific moves that they otherwise would
have no way of accessing Magmar was one
such case and the special move it
learned was follow me follow me is one
of the single strongest moves in the
entire game allowing a Pokemon to force
both opponents to Target it instead of
its partner so it's a way to let a super
offensive Pokemon actually stick around
without worrying so much about its bulk
on a tanky Pokemon that can burn you
just for attacking it this is absurd
follow me is such a strong move that
almost no Pokemon could learn it at the
time only five Pokemon lines got it with
only one or two of those having even
decent stats good thing they continued
showing restraint with this super broken move
move
right in the end Magmar actually wasn't
the problem on my team it was that
protecting your partners and boosting
their damage is a lot less valuable when
they aren't doing any damage in the
first place and funnily enough Magmar
would actually make it all the way to
fifth place used by South Korea's sjun
Park sjun understood how strong follow
me was way before the rest of the world
and would go on to win the World
Championships the following year with
his famous follow me pisu but my showing
with Magmar was much more pitiful and
shortly after worlds concluded Pokémon X
and Y were released and with a brand new
typing and the exciting new Mega
Evolution came a change to competitive
Pokemon's rules you were no longer
allowed to use Pokemon that had special
moves from other games most likely
Magmar wasn't the reason for this change
it was probably Heatran who could only
learn the incredibly strong move
eruption by completing a special event
in the spin-off game Pokemon Ranger
these event only Pokemon weren't good
for accessibility so Pokemon decided to
ban them outright but no matter the
reason the result was the same Magmar
could no longer learn follow me and that
meant I wouldn't get a chance to redeem
myself from my awful performance back in
2013 and that's the way things would be
for the next 10 years with Magmar
remaining in Exile a mere memory of the
Pokémon that had actually had a chance
to win the World Championships and
that's how I assumed it would be for the
rest of time but I was wrong Magmar
wasn't initially in scarlet and violet
but it made its reappearance in the
final DLC content the Indigo disc and
imagine my shock as looking through the
returning Pokémon I saw a curious
addition to magmar's egg move list
follow me I knew immediately what I had
to do this was my chance to redeem
myself to prove that I'd learned
something from my awful worlds team back
in 2013 and that I could do Magmar
justice so I signed up for an online
tournament with over 150 entrance and
built a team to maximize magmar's impact
here's what I came up with starting with
Magmar follow me helping hand protect
and flamethrower these are the the best
moves for magar to have if it wants to
contribute to the battle follow me to
keep its teammate safe helping hand to
boost their damage protect to keep
itself safe and flamethrower for
consistent damage teror grass allows
magar to not only completely wall ogre
pond water but it also means magar can
keep its entire team safe from amongus
Spore it's really hard to redirect Spore
because grass type Pokémon are immune to
the redirection move rage powder but
follow me can't be ignored by anything
except a stapler now now I need Pokémon
that magar can support I want Pokemon
that are relatively fast and can also do
massive amounts of damage while I could
use something like ersu it doesn't
excite me so I decided to give another
Pokemon that received a major buff in
the DLC a shot glamora lamora is a rock
and poison type with a really cool
ability every time it gets hit with a
physical attack it sets up a layer of
toxic spikes poisoning any Pokémon that
switches in my world's 2013 team had
three Pokémon with the move toxic and
once I realized the connection I knew I
had to use glamora it was the way to
make the concept actually work glamora
isn't just here for sentimental value
though in the DLC it was given the move
meteor beam an incredibly powerful move
that gives glamora a special attack
boost before launching this move would
be completely broken if not for the fact
that it takes two turns to work just
like solar beam but with the power herb
item we can ignore that drawback one
time glamora pairs so well with Magmar
because after meteor beam special attack
boost it will KO nearly every Pokemon in
the game in one or two hits there's
almost no Pokemon who can resist the
combination of rock poison and ground
moves making glamora almost impossible
to ignore with helping hand glamora can
even KO Pokemon like amongus in a single
meteor beam which is just absurd I
trained glamora to be as fast as
possible to get the jump on slow ogre
pawns and non Max Speed U and gave it a
terot type of grass to resist the water
and ground moves it's weak to and to
give myself another immunity to amongus
but now I have a problem both Pokémon on
my team are weak to ground attacks I
started thinking about flying type
Pokémon but I quickly ran into a problem
almost all the flying type Pokémon need
to talize to get access to a reliable
flying type attack Gyarados landeras
Thundurus these are good Pokémon but
they don't learn a flying type move then
there's Pokémon like Zapdos and Tornadus
who do learn flying moves but they're
inaccurate and I hate missing moves on
my recent Charlotte regionals winning
team I didn't have a single move that
could miss I mean I guess I could use
roaring Moon because it has acrobatics
but it doesn't resist ground also would
weak to inor what should I do you should
subscribe I was talking with my friend
Dylan about my problem when he made a
suggestion Zapdos galar I've never used
it before because well it's not commonly
thought to be very good but I realized
that it was exactly what I was looking
for here and the Epiphany that Zapdos
could actually work here wasn't the only
thing I realized I remembered that Dylan
had been one of the people I had worked
the closest with on my 2013 worlds team
that I was trying so hard to redeem
we've been friends for over a decade and
in a crazy full circle moment we were
working together to build a team around
Magmar once more 11 years later Magmar
is also a great partner for Zapdos galar
unlike its original counterpart zap
galar is a physical attacker and it has
access to the move Brave Bird unlike
roaring Moon its defiant ability means
intimidate makes it stronger eat your
heart out incinerar with a choice scarf
zapto speeds any non- boosted Pokemon
and even some boosted ones and with Tera
flying Brave Bird it can do enormous
damage plus with helping hand support it
can even KO super tanky Pokemon like
ogre Pon Well Spring through a tera
water I rounded up the move set with
close combat U-turn and knockoff and
locked it in with two fast Pokémon and
Magmar I realized that the team had a
glaring weakness trick room this field
condition that causes slow Pokemon to
move before fast ones was going to be a
problem for my fast and frail attackers
I don't really want to use trick room
myself so I instead need some Pokemon
that will make my opponent think twice
before twisting the dimension the first
Pokemon I came up with is new to
generation 9 King Gambit I really
haven't used it very much but I was
confident it would work here with an
assault vest it's incredibly tanky just
like Garian Zapdos it has the defiant
ability and Tera Dragon allows it to
comfortably handle the two most popular
ogre ponds King Gambit will be my main
answer to URS saluna blood moon a rising
star who can output huge damage with low
kick and helping hand King Gambit can KO
or nearly KO most URS saluna and with
Magmar using follow me URS saluna can't
hit King Gambit with earth power and
King Gambit survives one anyway thanks
to the assault vest even against teams
without trick room King Gambit's bulk
paired with follow me and helping hand
make it a good bring most of the time
and it can help to lock down end games
with its priority move Sucker Punch I
still want more for trick room though
and I also want a grass type Pokemon so
I can have an immunity to Spore and a
resistance to dondoo after some thought
I add a standard amonga set it would
help with everything I was weak to and
Porygon 2 which was giving me some
trouble in practice it's also another
redirector to help my offensive Pokémon
pop off with just one slot remaining I
want to use a Pokémon that's relatively
fast that can hit really hard and that I
can lead with Magmar I settle on the
number one most used Pokémon in the game
flutter man give it a booster energy and
Tera fairy to boost its special attack
and call it a day if you want to get
access to all of my tournament teams
immediately after the tournament

tournament in order to make it into the
final 16 players only to win six of my
eight rounds I boot up my switch and sit
down to start the tournament only to see
that somehow impossibly my round one
opponent also has Magmar it is for ogre
Pond this makes a lot of sense in my opinion

um the question is do I want to just go
for the one shot or do I want to try and
do something else yeah I'm going to go
for helping meteor beam here cuz like
this gives me the opportunity to just
win the win the game turn one if they if
they don't follow me and if Michael MO
is faster than the ogre Pawn oh I lost I
guess I could have tear it
there you know that was not my brightest
idea to be completely honest now I'm
basically out of offense for the rest of
the game which is very bad okay trick
room goes up
okay okay do I and I also can't Spore
stuff now huh I think I go into King
Gambit here to be honest um that was
that went just basically as bad as
possible uh it's ter fire fph which is
interesting but this is pretty
bad oh they switched okay into HST or
saluna okay they're going to get
poisoned which is good yeah it makes
sense to me they want to get maximum
value out of their um they want to get
right okay follow me comes out good move
from them I
go that's under half okay that's really
bad I'm I mean I have to make a play
here I'm going to lose right oh they
teed very bad oh they can get around
rage powder with that I didn't even
think about that oh my god oh shoot okay
that's really bad yeah I don't think
amongus plus Magmar can do this on their
own I could have teed King Gambit here
maybe it was better to do that are they
going to follow me
hey this is very bad uh they're probably
Min speed on the blood moon a yeah great
play honestly they're playing so well
but kingame does survive this however um
yeah things are still looking kind of
bad and I do low kick here does very
little damage so so I mean in this
position how do I win this if King gam
goes down I think I'm just like done for
for real right I actually think my best
play is to go for pollen puff and switch
to Magmar and take the hyper voice
because if kingma goes down I lose right
and they have no reason not to just
follow me and uh hyper voice I guess
actually follow me okay Luna I'm going
to take a ko. finally yeah losing
glamora turn one was really
bad hyper voice is okay here it's
probably like oh man wait that was a
crit magma is so good okay yeah fer comes
comes
in last turn of trick room which is
actually kind of bad for me in all
honesty this might be a mistake but yeah
because the basically what I'm banking
on here is the last Pokemon being
anamoros and then King Gambit being able
to win the game that way we want to see
um URS Luna protect here I could have
just killed it shoot this is probably
right oh all right well that's that's
that's game that is extremely game I
can't believe that I could have just
killed them that's crazy okay psychic oh
yeah I lose all my mons all right
well dang I got rolled good thing is
it's it's a two out of three uh so
that's at least something it was a good
play from them honestly it actually
wasn't that ridiculous of a prediction
because um yeah because uh they they
were also psyching there I was worried
about like something else basically this
yeah I lose this for sure but I think
it's only game one so it's actually not
so over
yet cuz I want to know what the last
Pokemon is I didn't Terra here either
like I could have made a different play
turn one and ter it with glora but I was
worried about eating double hyper
voice I do feel like King Gambit is kind
of the key here um but the thing is that
that blood moon or Salona is actually
quite problematic I also need to get rid
right okay I have a couple ideas about
how I can approach this I'm just shocked
that they're so okay it is an amoris
that's good to know I'm shocked that
they're so fast to be honest that's like
the most surprising thing to me with
Pawn this is going to make stalling a
trick room a lot harder okay so they do
lead what I expected they're probably
bringing the exact same for Pokemon
again oh they just they just went for it
okay that's not ideal to be honest uh
that's really
bad actually I might not get the kill
here which is we we really would if
they're going for trick roomm we prefer
to not get the kill here cuz it Wast a
turn of trick roomm good play from them
like they just kind of they kind of like
just grit their cheat and and and called
it how toow this KO ah it's actually
that's a really bad crit I don't think
it was going to kill cuz we didn't want
to give them a free switch and is the
thing oh they they hard
redit oh my God what a wild play oh my
God okay well I'm probably just going to
lose now cuz they can take a cow toow
surely right yeah they can definitely
take a cow
toow I've gotten every turn wrong unless
this is fire giraffe uh yeah with with
glamora in the back I can't win this if
power not enough oh they blood mooned oh
that's very interesting quick room okay
okay hang on this isn't over they
switched oh if I get a kill here wait if
I get a kill here I'm pogging that oh
they thought I was going to Spore oh nope
nope
no okay three turns of trick room left
the thing is if I can just I'm so close
I'm so so close I swear I'm so close I'm
so close it should have been Sucker
Punch it should have been Sucker Punch
for sure oh if I side pollen puffed I
would have been fine then again they
can't like they can't kill both right it
does a lot if I sucker punched okay so
this is obviously not ideal however they
are we are running out of turn to trick
room and my amongus is actually in
pretty good shape here a if I Sucker
Punch this game would be over I think I
can win this though I actually do
I think this is
winnable the the the worst case scenario
here is that they actually predict this
and go for a moonblast and get like a
crit or something but they're fairy
feather so it shouldn't get the Koo and
Nam has protected itself oh is it is it
protecting with both yeah was both good
play so this obviously isn't super ideal
but it's also not so bad how much is
glamora taking from an amoris terrass versus
anamoros okay they need a crit to kill me
alternatively I could just protect this turn

questionable end game I still haven't

I'm kind of feeling like singing a
different tune here so I can Brave Bird
into the URS saluna so here's the thing
obviously this looks a situation where
if they get a double protect they win if
they don't they lose right however what
I can do here is because I gave my
Garian zapus knockoff what I can do is
go for uh knockoff and sludge bomb both
into fig knockoff will remove the Citrus
Berry and do super effective damage and
this way oh they called
it survived okay but that's okay because
basically the only way that I lose this
is if they get like super crit hyper
voice which I'm not even sure if that KO
like obviously hyper voice will KO um
will KO glamora but the question is will
it KO Zapdos so it comes down to this
here here's hyper voice no critical hit
even a critical hit wouldn't have done
it glamora goes down but somehow Garian
Zapdos clutches it out in in a
particularly difficult uh end game but
Garian Zapdos actually ends up being the
perfect Pokemon here and so uh yeah
because of the choice scarf it's so fast
fast the Gamora knockup comes out and
we're going to game three we are still in

Magmar Ferra okay so I did bit them into
bringing Magmar which is really really
good uh for us because now I get to do
glamora plus uh what am I saying I do
need to watch out for this fph cuz it
can do a lot of damage if not careful so
amongus is coming in
here follow me comes out okay so I feel
like if they're going for trick roomm
here I probably made the right play met
beam comes out this can miss it is worth
noting magmar's flame body I need to
check cuz it can also get vital Spirit
there's the power herb lamora launches
connects this should take out the Magmar
though it's so bulky that I'm not even
positive okay it does take out the mag
so I do give them four turns in trick
room or yeah four turns in trick room um
assuming they don't go for psychic here

of the MVP of the set it did KO three of their

yeah this was not a great match up for
Magmar but I was still happy to have it
on the
team okay we'll make Magmar look better
in the next one it's just hard tricker
is like kind of a difficult match up for
mags oh so scary unfortunately my
opponent for round two was having
technical issues with their switch and
they weren't able to get them fixed in
time for us to play so I was given the
win but round three had a Pokemon that I
hadn't prepared for at all Ting l so in
terms of teras I to be really
careful gaging fire
and vessel ruin activates okay let's see
here I'm risking it all if they just
burning bu work I'm going to lose the
game turn one for
sure okay we just don't want to we want
to see the best thing to see here would
be tinglu 's protect that's what I would
love to see

man Magmar was so good I I can't believe
I lost this my worst play ever
um how do I what am I supposed to do
here is the thing cuz the like the G I
got like the early turns correct and I
still lost that's the thing and actually
with tinglu yeah I don't actually have a
good way through tinglu at all I think I
need to use amongus right man I can't
believe I lost after those early [Music]
turns yeah this is a bad play actually
yeah everything about this play is is
really bad at the very least yeah if
they just crash me I'm just into my
glora I'm just burning bull work oh man

it was a safe play from them and I could

option I kill the ogre Pawn which is
good um the bad thing is that I'm about
to lose glamora the good thing is I am
going to get the poison out of this

good if they don't have a moong guas if
they do have a moong guas and then
things are a lot worse yeah burning my
Tera here is really bad cuz I

because I'm still threatening a k. with Brave

difficult Garian zapus was good too I
just like never was able to kind of get
the calls correct yeah it's flutter man
this is actually really close to
winnable as the messed up thing I
definitely like didn't know how much my
moves were doing either I thought Sucker
Punch would probably KO there which
affected how I played I don't even think
G I think gouging fire is kind of hard
for my team I don't think it's like that
bad cuz magar is really good into it but
the combination of Ting L and gouging
fire was pretty pretty difficult corn Ur
okay cool cornado Ur is the lead I'm
lead Magmar and flutter
man so I can switch to amongus here with
flutter man or with Magmar AED oh I
didn't expect that oh wait that's
actually really
bad I mean okay it's bad but it's not so
ah it's really bad yeah the thing is
that I've got the ter out now which is
good and I'm actually in this position
it's really good that I brought a moon
back CU otherwise I could have some
actual major issues I could have tear it
here but I don't think it was worth it
let's see if they go for bleak wind or
if they go for Tailwind Tailwind okay
that's pretty good for me so the thing
is that surging strikes hits three times
three count them so the question is will
flame body burn it some point oh I only
get two Magmar Magmar come on flame
body you're not going to burn Okay yipp

got the burn magar went down but hey
magar did great
honestly I didn't kill either a i Terra
