0:10 hi I'm Noah hi I'm Courtney today we're
0:12 going to talk about art we are looking
0:14 at one of the most famous archaeological
0:16 sites in the world what do you see
0:18 thousands of soldiers why are they lined
0:20 up why are they standing in between
0:23 walls those are great questions these
0:25 soldiers were buried in underground pits
0:27 near the Tomb of the first emperor of
0:31 China he had a replica of his army made
0:34 to follow his Spirit into the Afterlife
0:36 the soldiers are lined up just like a
0:38 real army the walls make it look like
0:40 they are in trenches which are
0:42 underground pits that can protect an
0:45 army from enemies what are the soldiers
0:47 made of how big are they they're made of
0:50 terracotta which means baked Earth
0:52 originally all the soldiers were painted
0:55 too and they are life size how do they
0:57 make so many in such detail it looks
0:59 like they all have different faces it
1:02 sure does does but actually the Figures
1:04 were made from a set number of reusable
1:07 molds like molds we use in art class
1:10 with clay sculpting yes just like that
1:12 using molds sped up the process of
1:14 making these figures so that they could
1:17 produce over 8,000 of them to be buried
1:19 underground in pits near the first
1:22 Emperor's tomb different body parts like
1:25 the hands arms feet legs torsos and
1:28 heads were made from molds and then put
1:31 together to create a complete figure
1:34 details like mustaches and goatees were
1:36 then added to their faces to make it
1:38 look like they are different individuals
1:40 why did they add so much detail they
1:42 were just going to be buried under
1:45 ground and no one could see them that's
1:47 because these were made for the eyes of
1:50 the Dead Emperor and His Eyes Only The
1:52 Emperor wanted his Spirit to be
1:55 protected in the afterlife by an army as
1:57 realistic as his living one why do some
1:59 of them have their hands held out in
2:00 different positions
2:02 they were originally holding real
2:05 weapons like metal swords and crossbows
2:07 to make them appear even more realistic
2:09 I see terra cotta horses lined up in the
2:12 Tres too the horses were pulling real
2:14 chariots which were originally in the
2:17 empty spots behind the horses the
2:19 Chariots were made from wood but they
2:21 disappeared before these pits were
2:23 excavated by archaeologists in
2:26 1974 is that because wood decays over
2:29 time and it was dry those bits exactly
2:31 the ter kind of soldiers were buried
2:35 over 2,000 years ago in 221 BCE that's a
2:38 long time ago it sure is now it's time
2:41 for three fun facts Fact one this was a
2:43 very recent discovery these sculptures
2:46 were just found in 1974 Fact Two the
2:48 soldiers were life-sized and made to
2:51 look like real individuals fact three
2:53 over 8,000 soldiers have been excavated
2:55 so far there's probably more that have
2:58 yet to be discovered thanks for watching
