0:01 these three interior designers have been
0:04 given a photograph of an empty Galley
0:06 kitchen they have free reign to design
0:09 it in any way they please my name is
0:11 Courtney McLoud and my design style is
0:14 elegant but with a wink and a smile I'm
0:17 Sasha boff and my design style would be
0:20 if Marie Antoinette was at Studio 54 my
0:22 name is Becky Carter and my designs are
0:25 fearless architectural and pallet Savvy
0:29 no clients no restrictions just Blank Space
0:31 Space
0:35 this is definitely a typical City
0:38 Kitchen it's small it's
0:41 sad what I don't love is that this
0:44 window just it's not getting celebrated
0:47 we are really limited on space we're
0:49 really going to have to rework this
0:58 fit I think in a kitchen one of the
1:00 coolest things that you can do is
1:03 especially in a small kitchen is to do
1:07 tile but tile everywhere I'm selecting a
1:11 really beautiful Rich sky blue for my
1:15 wall tile and this one in particular is
1:19 a fabulous hand glaze tile by fire clay
1:21 tile and it really just made me think of
1:24 Nature and the outdoors I've decided to
1:29 go with a small scale 1ex one Mosaic I
1:31 think that this kitchen wants to kind of
1:35 feel both retro and futuristic at the
1:39 same time and so I like the yellow
1:41 because it is a bit of a retro color I
1:43 think I want to keep this kitchen really
1:46 light and bright because it's a small
1:48 Galley kitchen I'm going to cover our
1:51 walls in a travertine it's a natural
1:54 stone it's going to add this like sense
1:56 of luxury into the space on our doorway
1:59 separating the adjacent space to the
2:02 kitchen I've decided to make this wall a
2:06 little bit of a wing here and I'm going
2:10 to be adding a market sort of a paret up
2:13 the side of this wall parquet and Market
2:16 Tre is something that's commonly seen in
2:18 more historical buildings and I just
2:20 think it would be really fun in my sort
2:26 kitchen for the ceiling I'm going to do
2:28 this stainless steel ceiling cuz I want
2:30 it to be reflective and I really like
2:33 how the travertine and stainless steel
2:35 kind of go together it's really
2:37 important that I keep this kitchen light
2:39 so that you can see when you cook on the
2:41 ceiling I'm going to be clading the
2:44 whole thing with a walnut the kitchen is
2:46 inherently going to be a space with a
2:49 lot of hard surfaces and I would like to
2:51 bring in some warmth and some natural
2:54 wood by putting wood on the ceiling so
2:57 the ceiling everyone forgets the fifth
3:00 wall but I love love love to put
3:02 interest on a ceiling and so in this
3:05 space I'm planning to introduce a
3:07 wonderful pattern from a company called
3:11 porter tiio and they do these amazing
3:15 handp painted wallpapers on Japanese tea [Music]
3:18 [Music]
3:21 paper so in this kitchen we have what
3:24 looks like an oak floor it's not a very
3:27 remarkable material I want to go with
3:29 something that's just a little bit more
3:31 flashy the flooring that we're going to
3:33 be working with here is very heavily
3:36 inspired by a designer named geop ponti
3:39 and what I'm doing is I'm creating a
3:42 geometric field of different colors and
3:45 Stones using all these different kind of
3:47 stone colors these could be marbles
3:49 granits quartz sites you name it I'm
3:52 going to use the same travertine stone
3:54 that I'm using on the walls on the floor
3:58 as well I want there to be a really nice
4:01 transition from the wall to the floors
4:03 so I really want to incorporate
4:05 additional pattern into the space and so
4:08 for me the ceiling and the floor are
4:10 going to Echo each other my best piece
4:13 of advice when you're trying to live on
4:16 the edge with pattern is to remember
4:19 scale so if you're working with two bold
4:21 patterns you want to have one that's
4:25 more loose larger more abstract and then
4:27 you want to pair that with a pattern
4:30 that is tighter more regimental
4:33 but in the same or a complimentary [Music]
4:36 [Music]
4:39 palette so the window has this very
4:41 heavy black frame the window frame that
4:45 I would like to do is Stone we're going
4:47 to be using one of the stones from the
4:50 floor which will be this yellow I'm also
4:53 changing the design of the framing so
4:55 instead of having this more traditional
4:58 kind of four panel window system I'm
5:01 switching it out to design that feels a
5:03 little bit more like something you would
5:06 see in a more kind of European modernist
5:09 Department I designed a custom roller
5:13 shade that is made with brown leather
5:15 and perforated with holes so that you
5:19 get these little peekaboos of the scene
5:23 behind the window I am going to take off
5:27 the window frame and I think I'm going
5:31 to just create a more simple window
5:34 frame around this window so for the
5:38 window I wanted to do something that
5:41 will be a bit of a literal translation
5:46 of a piece from the artist Tomas sareno
5:49 his piece is a three-dimensional object
5:52 and so I thought it would be really cool
5:56 to flatten that design and to turn it
6:03 so the first thing I want to do is move
6:06 the sink underneath the window and the
6:09 idea behind this is that you can wash
6:12 your dishes you can clean your fruits
6:14 and you can really enjoy this view now
6:17 for me in a small kitchen like this the
6:19 best real estate is right next to the
6:23 window so I really don't want to ruin
6:26 that area with just a really big blocky
6:29 piece and so I want to actually flip
6:34 that and move that tall solid piece away
6:36 from the window so that I can open that
6:39 up and instead use that as a space that
6:42 will be a work prep area when I got the
6:44 heartbreaking news from ad that I could
6:46 not take down this wall I started to
6:50 really lean into a true Galley kitchen I
6:53 started doing research on luxury Yachts
6:56 trailers airstreams airplanes if you
6:58 have to have a real Galley let's look at
7:00 some real G I'm going to be making my
7:03 upper cabinets so that they are designed
7:06 to be angled and the angle is going to
7:08 be tighter at the bottom and wider at
7:11 the top something that I love about this
7:13 is it kind of feels like Marvin the
7:16 Martian it's giving this spaceship Vibe
7:19 I'm paneling the fridge and all of our
7:22 Cabinetry in stainless steel and the way
7:24 that the steel works with the travertine
7:27 it's almost like a natural material with
7:30 this kind of like reflective silvery
7:32 finish you're almost not going to see
7:35 any of the appliances in my kitchen for
7:37 the cabinets in my kitchen I am planning
7:42 to use a coraly pinky red I really
7:44 thought that it would help to reinforce
7:47 the nature or natural Vibe of the space
7:49 and be a perfect compliment to the sky
7:53 blue of the wall tile I've Incorporated
7:56 a bit of shine through a lacquer finish
7:58 so that will definitely add to making
8:01 the space feel brighter what I really
8:03 don't like you would walk into the space
8:05 and the first thing you would see would
8:08 kind of be this like big refrigerator I
8:10 always like to hide them so what I'm
8:12 going to do with the fridge is I'm going
8:14 to move it to the left side of the space
8:17 that way when you walk into the room you
8:20 are not going to you know see the fridge
8:23 first so on my upper cabinets I'm going
8:25 to be designing them with these port
8:27 hole windows that allow you to see ever
8:30 so slightly into the cabinets themselves
8:33 I like it because it does hearken back
8:36 to a little bit of a marine feel it
8:37 might be something you would see on a
8:40 boat or you might see it in a vintage
8:43 trailer I have Incorporated very tall
8:45 upper cabinets it's really to take
8:47 advantage of all the ceiling height to
8:50 get as much storage as I possibly can
8:54 I've also made sure to do a variety of
8:57 doors and drawers to really add a lot of
9:00 functionality and variety that is
9:02 perfect for a small kitchen so for the
9:05 lowers what we're doing is we're doing a
9:08 custom kitchen from a kitchen company
9:12 called aamus they make these cabinets
9:14 and they started out in creating Custom
9:17 Kitchens for Yachts so this is going to
9:20 be a beautiful brushed stainless it is
9:23 restaurant grade and aamus designed them
9:27 so that the burners of the range are
9:29 just set into the countertop the whole
9:31 thing is this monolithic piece of Steel
9:33 it's incredibly architectural it's
9:36 incredibly simple but at the same time
9:39 has this really bizarre fun warmth to it
9:42 it has these brass poles that I think
9:45 really warm it up and add that kind of
9:47 feeling of jewelry because we moved
9:51 around our kitchen appliances we have
9:54 created way more counter space this is
9:58 really great because you can now use
10:00 this space for prep but you can also
10:03 entertain more easily and you can have a
10:06 bunch of dishes or aures kind of on this
10:09 counter I think that the client for this
10:12 kitchen they might be City people who
10:13 moved out to the country and this is
10:16 their pieter so I thought to myself why
10:19 take up so much space and energy using a
10:21 full-size fridge when there are really
10:24 excellent drawer fridge products out
10:26 there one of the focal points for my
10:29 kitchen will be a beautiful Suite of
10:34 Barone appliances and for this kitchen
10:38 I'm using a white range which you know
10:40 is a little bit unusual but I think it's
10:43 perfect for this light and Airy space it
10:45 also has all of these wonderful brass
10:48 accents to it brass is something that I
10:50 want to bounce around the room so it's a
10:52 really like a piece of jewelry within
10:54 the space a functional piece of jewelry
10:57 but of course function we need to have
11:01 safety and so I've Incorporated a
11:04 complimentary vent hood that is a
11:07 perfect match I'm a big collector of
11:11 tabletop I love glasswear I love vases
11:15 and urns so I think the best part of a
11:17 kitchen is definitely having some open
11:19 shelving and this adds personality to
11:21 your home I think that not only is it
11:23 beautiful to display your objects but
11:25 it's so handy it's like grab and go you
11:28 don't have to open up a door to get to
11:31 what you need I am moving the sink
11:34 towards the opening of the kitchen I'm
11:36 sliding it down that wall right there
11:39 and I'm doing it purely to make room for
11:42 the curve so by putting the sink there
11:44 that's given us some more architecture
11:46 to be able to create that curved
11:48 countertop in the back I really wanted
11:50 to create kind of this eeden kitchen and
11:52 I love a breakfast du the Banette is
11:54 upholster and I'm going to do this
11:56 Clarence House fabric I really like this
12:00 fabric because it's neutral but it has a
12:03 really fun kind of wavy print to it the
12:05 table I'm going to use in this space is
12:08 vintage it's from the' 70s and it's also
12:12 made of travertine and it has a steel
12:15 element to it on the tabletop so it
12:23 kitchen you don't expect to see a
12:26 fabulous chandelier in a kitchen but I
12:29 think you should so here I want to to
12:32 lean into that nature Vibe and I'm
12:35 pulling a fixture from uh Rosie Lee my
12:38 favorite lighting designer I'm using her
12:41 Laurel Blossom fixture which is like
12:44 this but in more of a brass finish the
12:47 chandelier is Matthew Lenor and it is
12:50 from Carpenter workshop and I really was
12:51 attracted to this because it's like
12:55 these tubes of light it's super modern
12:57 it's fun and almost like these tubes of
13:00 light work really well well with the
13:02 Clarence House fabric makes almost like
13:05 this similar pattern in a way the light
13:08 over the sink is a vintage light from an
13:11 Italian designer named Vico mastr it is
13:15 a soft frosted glass Dome with a globe
13:17 inside of it and that's just going to
13:20 give a really soft diffuse light
13:23 throughout the entire space I love to
13:25 incorporate all different types of
13:27 lighting into a space so we have our
13:29 overhead light with our chandelier but
13:32 then we also have our counter lighting
13:35 with our LED strips and that's going to
13:37 like really give us this beautiful glow
13:40 in the space the last bit of lighting
13:43 was the Chrome picture light again like
13:46 very modern very simple instead of going
13:48 with a typical linear under cabinet
13:51 light what I've decided to do is pepper
13:54 the backsplash with Marine step lights
13:56 what you're seeing here is really cool
13:58 it's a little step light that normally
14:02 would would be mounted maybe 2 ft above
14:05 the floor maybe a foot along a pathway
14:07 or up and down steps to help light your
14:09 path these ones specifically are
14:16 boat the piece of artwork that I chose
14:19 is an iconic black and white image of
14:22 Bianca Jagger coming into Studio 54 on a
14:24 white horse I wanted something that was
14:27 kind of like iconic New York that went
14:29 with the view and went with our steel
14:31 and our metal and our traveler teen and
14:34 also this like wavy kind of groovy
14:37 fabric I like to hang art in my kitchens
14:40 this is a painting of the ocean and it
14:43 sort of feels like a little window
14:46 looking out to the sea I like that it's
14:49 a sort of tongue and cheek nod at our
14:52 fantasy ship that we've created here my
14:54 favorite element of this room is my
14:57 little herb garden which is these Wall
14:59 Planters that I found that have this
15:02 kind of like futuristic Space Age feel
15:04 to them they're made of fiberglass and
15:06 they go directly onto the wall and in
15:10 them is basil and rosemary and parsley
15:12 bringing nature into the space I have
15:15 styled the countertop with an elmond
15:18 belf freed tea set they have a very bow
15:21 housian quality to them they're super
15:24 geometric and they feel very simplified
15:28 but also a little bit out of this world [Music]
15:31 [Music]
15:33 I really love my kitchen it feels
15:36 personal and that's what I always try to
15:40 do in my designs to think of someone who
15:43 is not afraid to express themselves in
15:45 their home I think a lot of people kind
15:47 of like steer away from stainless steel
15:49 kitchens cuz they maybe feel like it's
15:51 too industrial but I think this is a
15:54 great example of how Chic and cool they
15:56 could look this is somebody who may not
15:59 be cooking elaborate meals but when they
16:02 have cereal or they get their Chinese
16:06 takeout they're doing it with [Music]
16:14 style oo wow
16:16 wow
16:20 wow that like SE is
16:22 amazing you and I went for that
16:23 stainless steel
16:28 too I love it okay I've got to know what
16:30 was the inspir ation for for the seating
16:34 this is a Clarence House fabric I wanted
16:36 like this really clean metal kitchen
16:37 with the
16:40 travertine so I was kind of just trying
16:43 to think about what fabric would Funk it
16:46 up a little bit but stay in this like
16:50 kind of neutral base I love a wave so it
16:52 kind of like brought everything to that
16:55 like disco fun like 7s yeah it's such a
16:58 great balance with like the Stark
17:00 architecture the that you kep everything
17:02 so CLE and linear and then the fabric
17:04 just like flies in the face of that but
17:06 in this way that just like perfectly
17:08 dials in my favorite detail is my little
17:11 herb garden there this is for a cook so
17:14 if you need some fresh Basilico you can
17:18 just you know chop it off your wall
17:21 over this is such a Vibe it's a whole
17:23 vibe my thought was if I have to go
17:25 Galley kitchen I'm going like real
17:27 Galley kitchen so I started looking at
17:30 the Kitchens on yacht on airplanes in
17:32 trailers and so there's a bit of
17:35 inspiration coming from like vintage
17:37 airstreams and that kind of feel that's
17:38 where you're seeing some of these Port
17:41 holes and the stainless steel and then I
17:43 was also trying to hearken in a little
17:47 bit of like a Milano 60s Milan Vibes and
17:50 I love the blue tile jxap POS with that
17:53 kind of like rose blush colored lacquer
17:55 Cabinetry you know I was kind of
17:58 thinking like this is a typical small a
18:01 little cramped and dark New York City
18:02 Kitchen and so I wanted to really bring
18:05 in something light and Airy then I
18:06 brought in a little bit more of a
18:09 literal with the rosy Lee chandelier
18:11 which I'm like obessed stain glass on
18:13 the window yeah oh you know I just
18:17 realized I'm kind of matching my oh you
18:19 are I always say always match your interior
18:21 interior [Music]
